As Tinkler's financial position deteriorated over the past two years, Harvey had advanced loans to his Thoroughbred business of some A$40 million with security over what racing stock Tinkler had left, the bloodstock and various properties. Harvey called in his security in August and it was announced that Magic Millions would conduct a complete dispersal and the sale company launched a complex operation to transport the bloodstock to the Gold Coast, as well as taking into account mares foaling at the time of the sale. These mares were sold with video on them on the sale screens while other mares walked into the sale ring with their recent foals. The sale complex was very well attended by a wide collection of industry breeders and agents, with Harvey commenting that the reason they were there was 'pretty simple,' with the failed Patinack venture offering the industry the opportunity to pick over the operation. Also in attendance was Tinkler himself, flanked by media personality Richard Freeman, as he watched his former operation disappear into the massed ranks of the industry. A total of 197 horses were sold for A$22,487,000, at an average of A$117,733 and a median of A$40,000. Cont. p13 Aidan O’Brien with Ol’ Man River Racing Post Lady Eli A Coglianese

52ND PREIS VON EUROPA-G1 result cont. Never a factor when last of the seven runnerscontesting the June 29 G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud,Empoli fared little better when again bringing up therear when fifth in the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville at theend of last month. Finding a perfect spot on the railearly in fourth, he traveled strongly in the slipstream ofEarl of Tinsdal and was still full of run as that rivalbegan to turn the screw at the top of the straight. In anincident reminiscent of last year, he was denied a runup the inner as the long-time leader lugged backtowards the fence at the quarter pole, and he hadvaluable momentum to regain as he was angled outsoon after. Driven to close the two-length gap on hisold adversary, he knuckled down to wear down thegallant pacesetter and assert for an overdue first black-type win in the final 50 yards.

Marjorie Dye and Alex Venneri=s Bright Thought hadbeen winless since capping a four-race win streak witha world-record setting victory in the GII San Luis ReyS., when he covered 1 1/2 miles of the Santa Anita turfcourse in 2:22.72 last March. He was most recentlythird while making his first start for trainer Phil D=Amatoin the Aug. 23 GII Del Mar H. Bright Thought attendedthe pace of Big Kick (Tiznow) through three quarters in1:10.30 as that pair opened a clear advantage over therest of the field. He put away Big Kick turning for homeand determinedly held off Finnegans Wake down thelane. AThis is the second race I=ve had him,@ D=Amato, whoalso saddled late-running third-place finisher Big John B.AI=ve probably had him for two months. He=s just aclassy horse. Last time, I don=t think I used his bestasset, his speed, to full advantage. This time I wantedto sharpen him up and use that speed, and Tyler [Baze]used it perfectly today.@ Of beaten favorite Big John B.,D=Amato said, AThis will set him up for that mile and ahalf [GI Breeders= Cup Turf] as well. Mike Smith jumpedoff and said, >Mile and a half.= The horse came with arun and he ran well. I always thought a mile and quarterwas probably as short as I=d go with Big John. A mileand a half, a mile and three-eighths is right in his wheelhouse. We=re probably looking for the same [BC Turf]for Bright Thought. We=ll see how he comes out of it,but he loves this turf course. PILGRIM S.-GIII result cont. Imperia missed by just a neck when second behindFace the Music (Stormy Atlantic) in his 1 1/16-miledebut over the Saratoga lawn Aug. 23. Adding Lasixfor this second start, the dark bay colt was unhurriedout of the gate and let the pacesetters go as he settledinto midpack along the hedge. Longshot Vision Perfectset the pace through fractions of :25.06 and :48.98.Imperia was angled out to the center of the course atthe top of the lane and inhaled the pacesetter in thefinal 50 yards to break his maiden going away. Winningtrainer Kiaran McLaughlin admitted it had been a whilesince he had saddled amaiden for a gradedstakes. AWe=ve only [run amaiden in a graded stakes]one other time that I canremember in the last 10years, and it was Soldat.@Soldat broke his maiden inhis third start in the 2010GIII With Anticipation S.before running second inthat year=s GIII Pilgrim S.and GII Breeders= CupJuvenile Turf. He returned the following year to win theGII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. He had bled alittle in his first start, so we signed him up for Lasix,@McLaughlin said of Imperia.

Javier Castellano, substituting for the injured RajivMaragh, added, AI got lucky today with the wayeverything unfolded. I didn't have a horse in the race, and Kiaran asked me to ride him this morning. I had abeautiful trip. He broke well, much better than lasttime. He put me in good position early, and I got tosave all the ground. I had the best horse in the race, Ijust had to go around the horses and he took off; I likethe way he did it at the top of the stretch. For a younghorse, he has a very mature mind.@ Imperia is a son of Godolphin=s multiple Grade Iwinner Cocoa Beach (Chi) (Doneraile Court), whocaptured the 2008 GI Beldame S. and GI Matriarch S.and was second behind Zenyatta in that year=s GIBreeders= Cup Ladies= Classic. NoEvidence Needed won six races, including the G2 Let's Elope S.She walked into the ring with abay colt foal by All Too Hard, and was picked up by Harvey forA$720,000. Harvey lateroutlasted Magnier to secure Lot410, the Classic winner SeriousSpeed in foal to All Too Hard, forA$720,000, and a short timelater he added lot 447, theGroup 1 winner Allez Wonder(Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus})in foal to that same young sire, for A$750,000. Another regular on the Australian scene getting in themix was John Singleton=s Strawberry Hills Stud, whichpicked up lot 492, Dreams and Wishes (Aus) (Galileo{Ire}), for A$700,000. Dreams and Wishes, who iscarrying her second foal, by All Too Hard, is out ofProcrastinate (Aus) (Jade Hunter), and is therefore ahalf to Group 1 winner Laisserfaire (Aus) (Danehill),multiple Group 3 winner A Time For Julia (Aus)(Redoute=s Choice {Aus}), and Group 1-placed winnersand sires Time Thief (Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus})and Foreplay (Aus) (Danehill).

The racemares section of the catalogue commencedproceedings, and it was apparent that the chosen lotsof favor would attract strong bidding. Segenhoe Studwent to A$610,000 for lot 390, the stakes winnerPeron (Aus). The Husson (Arg) mare out of the FlyingSpur (Aus) mare Faster Pussycat (Aus) had won sixtimes, including the Ispwich TC Gai WaterhouseClassic, and she is Group 2 placed. The young sire All Too Hard, plucked out of thePatinack business before he had finished racing lastyear by Harvey's Vinery Stud syndicate, continued tobe in demand with mares either in foal to him or withfoals on the ground. The sale continued a strong demand for broodmaresfrom established and new industry entrants "In the last five months, Magic Millions has soldabout A$92.5 million worth of breeding stock," saidVin Cox, Magic Millions managing director. SUPER SATURDAY WINNERS LOOK FORWARD Connections of the winners on Belmont Park=s SuperSaturday card were looking ahead to the Breeders= CupChampionships at Santa Anita Sunday morning.J “TDN Rising Star” J Tonalist (Tapit), who addedthe GI Jockey Club GoldCup to his GI Belmont S.title, exited the race in fineshape. AHe came out of therace in good order,@reported trainer ChristopheClement. AWe=re all thrilledand excited about it.@ Of astart in the Nov. 1 GIBreeders= Cup Classic,Clement added, AOf coursewe=ll keep him eligible tothe Breeders= Cup. I=ll talkto [owner] Mr. [Robert] Evans later this week. The ideawould be to train to the race, but we have plenty oftime to talk about it.@ Also expected to move on to the Breeders= Cup is GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic winner Main Sequence(Aldebaran). A[His wins] never seem to be easy,@ trainerGraham Motion said of Main Sequence=s gritty late-running victory Saturday. AI would like to have put himin cotton balls and just not run him again before the [GI] Breeders= Cup [Turf], but the timing for [the JoeHirsch] was so good, and this is a very prestigious raceon its own account. It=s a great race to win.@ Trainer Rudy Rodriguez enjoyed a career day atBelmont Saturday, saddling GI Beldame S. winner BelleGallantey (After Market) and GII Kelso H. winner Vyjack(Into Mischief), as well as GI Vosburgh S. runner-upDads Caps (Discreet Cat). AShe looks like she came back pretty good,@Rodriguez said of Belle Gallantey. AShe ate up good lastnight and had a lot of energy this morning. She lookedthe same to us. We=re going to wait a couple days andsee how she is and take it from there. Right now, wedon=t have any plans for her. We=re going to watch andsee how she is and then see what we want to do.@ Of Vyjack, Rodriguez added, AHe=s one of our favoritehorses. To see him run the way he did, it was amazing. All along, we=ve thought he had some talent and he cancompete with those horses. The horse is not easy totrain, and thank God he came back good, too. The planwas to run him in the [Nov. 29 GI] Cigar Mile, that=swhy we put him in the mile race. I have to talk to theowner and figure out what he wants to do.@

Reflecting on his super Saturday, Rodriguez said, AItwas a great day. The horses were all training verygood. For them to perform the way they did wasunbelievable.@ Trainer Chad Brown sent out a bevy of runnersSaturday at Belmont. Stephanie=s Kitten (Kitten=s Joy)gave him his best result with her victory in the GI Flower Bowl S. AShe came out of the race in great shape so far,@Brown said. AAs long as she=s sound and doing well [theGI Breeders= Cup F/M Turf] is the plan. Her last threeraces have been terrific; I certainly wouldn=t tradehorses with anyone. I was really happy she adapted tothe slow pace because I wasn=t sure how she=d reactlaying that close.@ Big Blue Kitten (Kitten=s Joy), fourth in the JoeHirsch, could also be heading to the Breeders= Cup. AI=d like to go [to the Breeders= Cup Turf with Big BlueKitten],@ said Brown. AI would have liked to have seen astronger pace, and he had a little trouble turning forhome, but not terrible. I was a little disappointed hedidn=t kick that last eighth and catch up to the topthree, but all in all he wasn=t beaten too far. If he=ssound and well, I would like to take a shot with him outat Santa Anita and hope for a stronger pace.@ Brown said that Real Solution (Kitten=s Joy), sixth inthe Joe Hirsch, had likely run his last race. AReal Solution just didn=t have it [in the Joe Hirsch],@Brown said. AIt was likely his last race, but I have toconfirm that with Mr. [Ken] Ramsey. He=s scheduled toenter stud at [the Ramsey's] farm.@ Brown also may have a representative in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic after Zivo (True Direction)=srunner-up effort in the Gold Cup. AZivo came back great,@ Brown said. AHe ran terrific. In my eyes, it was another career best race for him. Hehad some trouble, as did a handful of other horseswhen [Maragh] went down, but regained his composureand restarted his race at that point. He was secondbest yesterday, but a good second.@

SURGERY FOR MARAGH Rajiv Maragh, who was thrown from Wicked Strong(Hard Spun) during Saturday=s GI Jockey Club GoldCup, underwent surgery Sunday to repair a broken rightarm. AThey put in a couple of plates and some screwsand he seems to be fine,@ said Maragh's agent, TonyMicallef. AWe don=t know yet how long he will be out.@In the race prior to the Gold Cup, Maragh captured theGI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational aboard MainSequence (Aldebaran). The accident occured aboutmidway through the Gold Cup when Wicked Strongclipped heels with Moreno (Ghostzapper). Moreno wenton to finish fourth in the race before being disqualifiedand placed last.

ON TO CUP FOR SHARED BELIEF Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}), who remainedunbeaten in seven starts with his determined win inSaturday=s GI Awesome Again S., is on target for theNov. 1 GI Breeders= CupClassic. AHe came out of itreal nice,@ trainer JerryHollendorfer said.AEverything=s good.@ Jockey Mike Smith, aboard last year=s juvenilechampion, was still talkingSunday about his trip inthe Awesome Again, particularly VictorEspinoza=s ride aboard theBob Baffert-trained Sky Kingdom (Empire Maker). Thatlongshot drifted out and carried Shared Belief wide onthe first turn as the Baffert-trained Fed Biz (Giant=sCauseway) set the pace. AI don=t know exactly what Victor was doing,@ Smithsaid Sunday morning. AMy horse overcame it andshowed a lot of fight. He finished the race strong andhe had to work for it after being taken out. But he cameout of the race good. I just went to see him. He ate up,he=s happy, so all=s good. Sometimes a good race likethat will put more in him.@ The Santa Anita stewards Sunday announced theyhad suspended Espinoza for seven days because of theinterference. Of the incident, Hollendorfer said, AWe=re big boysout here racing and as long as we won, we overcame alot, so I=m grateful to get the win.@

CIGAR STREET POSSIBLE FOR CLASSIC Jake Ballis and Rashard Lewis=s J “TDN RisingStar” J Cigar Street (Street Sense) remains a possiblecontender for the Nov. 1 GI Breeders=Cup Classic, according to trainer BillMott. In his second start of the year, the5-year-old won Saturday=s HomecomingS. at Churchill Downs. AWe certainly hadthe Breeders= Cup Classic on our mind,@Mott said. ABut Saturday wasn=t a >Winand You=re In= race. So we=ll sit down andtalk to the connections and see what ournext move will be, but I wouldn=t rule theClassic out at this point.@ Of his charge=s effort in theHomecoming, Mott added, AHe ran agreat race. That was his second startback and we obviously didn=t think hewas ready to go to the GI Jockey ClubGold Cup, so we really weren=t sure whathe would do going into Saturday. But wewere impressed with his performance and I think he=smoving forward like we had hoped.@

BEST LITTLE HORSE TRACK IN KENTUCKYBy Lucas Marquardt On Sept. 22, 1826, a young politician named SamHouston crossed from Tennessee into Kentucky, stoodin a field as the sun rose over the nearby town ofFranklin, and fatally shot Gen. William White in a duelthat, at that point, was still legal in the state. Almost exactly 115 years later, the Thoroughbredracetrack built on the former dueling grounds would belooking down the barrel of a gun, at least figuratively. In 2011, Kentucky Downs was facing almost certainclosure. The track was struggling to stay in the black ascasino competition in neighboring states ate away at itsmarket share. But there was a possible lifeline. Kentucky Downsinvested $3 million in a Historical Horse Racing parlor, similar to the one put in at Oaklawn Park. HistoricalHorse Racing, sometimes called Instant Racing, wasdeveloped by AmTote and Oaklawn, and allowedpatrons to wager into pari-mutuel pools through a videogaming device resembling a slot machine.Cont. p18

(Best Little Horse Track in Kentucky cont.) Three years later, how has that $3 million bet workedout for Kentucky Downs? By all accounts, Instant Racing appears to be a hugesuccess. If there were any doubts, the track=soutstanding 2014 season might well have obliteratedthem. In its abbreviated 5-day meet (held Sept. 6, 10,13, 17 and 24), the track achieved a record all-sourceshandle of $15,880,756--up 110% from just two yearsago, when $7,570,731 was bet on Kentucky Downsraces. On-track growth has been less dramatic, but stillimpressive. The 2014 on-track handle was $744,543,up 35% from the 20012 figure of $550,757. It would be easy to peg Kentucky Downs= successsolely to the influx of gaming-infused purses. After all, maiden specials went for a Saratoga-esque $90,000this season. Purses for first-level allowance races were$100,000. That, in turn, ensured full fields, generallynever a problem at Kentucky Downs, which, with itsall-turf racing, had always proven popular with regionalhorsemen looking to get on the lawn. And while Kentucky Downs= turnaround wouldn=thave been possible without Historical Horse Racing, itwould be a mistake to overlook what track officialshave done to build on the momentum. Primarily, that=smeant fostering a customer-friendly environment. AWhen we bought Kentucky Downs, our goal was tobe a catalyst for positive change in the horse racingindustry,@ said track president Corey Johnsen, whowith Ray Reid purchased a majority interest in KentuckyDowns in 2007. For Johnsen, that meant being on the side of thehorseplayer when possible...starting with takeout rates. The takeout for win, place and show bets is currently16%, while all exotic takeout rates stands at 19%,excepting the Pick 5 (14%) and exacta wagers. At18.25%, the exacta takeout is one of the lowest rates,if not the lowest, in North America. AWe want to be known as the >horseplayer'sracetrack,' so we made a decision to lower our takeoutto the lowest level in Kentucky,@ said Johnsen. AWhenwe lowered our exacta takeout to 18.25%, forinstance, we wanted to send a message. I alwaysthought the exacta is a staple of the everydayhorseplayer, they guy who's just grinding it out.@ Horseplayers have noticed. Earlier this year, KentuckyDowns was the #2-ranked track by the HorseplayersAssociation of North America, just behind Keeneland. Handicappers are finding more and more to like aboutKentucky Downs other than the takeout rates, saidJohnsen. AOur jockey colony is second to none,@ he explained.ARosie Napravnik and Julien Leparoux tied for leadingjockey, and we=ve had a >who's who= riding here inrecent years. We=re seeing some of the top barns in thenation send horses here--including from California--andour stakes races are really developing a following.@ That was underscored on closing day, when anoversubscribed Ladies Marathon S. was split into twodivisions.

AWe=re also seeing a lot of horses who broke theirmaidens here, or maybe won a one-other-than, go on tobe Grade I winners,@ said Johnsen. AA lot of peopledon=t realize [GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner] FortLarned won a NW2X here. This year, we had RoomService and Personal Diary both win Grade I=s. We=reactually going to start a Kentucky Downs Wall of Fameto highlight those horses who started at KentuckyDowns and went on to win Grade I races.@ Perhaps the biggest draw for horseplayers areKentucky Downs= robust field sizes. AWe have fullfields, averaging just under 10.2 starters per race,@ saidJohnsen. AHorseplayers appreciate an intellectualchallenge, and in some of our races, we're just notgiving it to them. We, as a sport, have short fields witha dominant favorite, and that's just not interesting.@ Importantly, management at Kentucky Downs hasaimed to ensure that the focus remains on racing, rather than on the Historical Horse Racing machinesinside. Capital improvements for 2014 were substantial. A Duralock rail was installed before the meet. Turfrenovations, including an improved drainage system, were overseen by the newly hired track superintendentRon Moore, a respected veteran. The test barn wasrevamped to give state vets more room to operate. AIn addition to the improvements we made, we alsoheld a lot of great promotions that focused on horseracing,@ Johnsen added. AWe=re really proud of that, andwe think it's critically important to introduce people toour sport. We held a >College Day,= and gave away alaptop after each race, for example.@ In some instances, Johnsen=s experience withHistorical Horse Racing has helped changed the waythe track does business, particularly in regards tosecurity. AI=ve learned a tremendous amount about the powerof surveillance in handling security and integrity issueswith our historical horse racing gaming center,@ he said.AWe have added 32 surveillance cameras to the stablearea, and I believe Thoroughbred racing needs to addsurveillance to its overall racing integrity system.Today, we have better testing, stronger penalties, andgood investigative abilities. What we don=t have is surveillance.@ At the end of the day, Johnsen views KentuckyDowns as a sort of successful experiment that, hopefully, can prove useful to other tracks around thecountry. AOne of the best things we may have done for horseracing is to take a big step with Historical HorseRacing,@ he said. ARight now, it=s going strong in bothIdaho and Wyoming. Both those states will havedramatically improved purse structures, and more liverace opportunities in 2015. I=m hopeful you=ll find otherstates come along. The Texas Racing Commission. passed rules and regulations to allow for HistoricalHorse Racing. We needed to show the racing worldthat this alternative form or pari-mutuel racing canwork, and I think we did that. It=s a good product, it=sour product, and we need to expand it.@
