Since 2010, the syndicate has purchased a small group of horses each year--three yearlings and three 2-year-olds-- and it is already fielding a contender for the Grade I Donn H. at Gulfstream Park this Sunday in Bourbon Courage (Lion Heart), and a potential Kentucky Derby Contender in the 3-year-old Bourbonize (Tiz Wonderful). McMahon and Hill are partners in the McMahon and Hill Bloodstock LLC, which has purchased 69 stakes horses, including 21 graded stakes horses. Rising to the Challenge (cont. from p1) Charlie Appleby=s charge, Artigiano (Distorted Humor)made his first start off an imposed 14-month layoff inthe Jan. 14 Listed Singspiel S., finishing a respectablethird. Although he has won just once, the 4-year-oldhas been prominent at the finish in the majority of hiseight outings, including runner-up efforts in the G2 Vintage S. and G2 Royal Lodge S. as a juvenile.Pearl Bloodstock=s globe-trotting Group 1 winnerDunaden (Fr) (Nicobar {GB}) makes a rare switch to theall-weather here. The 8-year-old ran eight times in sixcountries last year, and his most recent performances--fifth, beaten 1 1/2-lengths, in the G1 Japan Cup Nov. 24 and third, beaten 3/4 of alength in the G1 Longines Hong Kong Vase Dec. 8--suggest he hasn=t gained much rust. HeavyMetal (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}), winner of last year=s G1 Durban July, South Africa=s richest race, finished anon-threatening seventh in the Jan. 23 G2 Al FahidiFort here in his first outing since that career high. He islikely to have gained plenty of fitness with that run, andtries the all-weather for the first time. Zahee (NZ)(Dylan Thomas {Ire}) is a progressive type who wonfirst up for Mike de Kock here last week, and Surfer(Distorted Humor), second here last year, shouldappreciate the conditions, but is drawn wide.

Bourbon Trail Goes Through Florida (cont. from p1)

In 2010, however, the partners decided to grow thestable into what has become Bourbon Lane. BourbonCourage, who was a bargain $15,000 FTKJUL yearlingin 2010, was among the initial group of yearlings thesyndicate purchased to launch the stable. AWe=ve always been diligent about culling out thehorses that aren=t that good, which has kept ourpartners happy,@ McMahon said. AWe=ve been able torun in multiple Grade Is and lots of graded stakes, andwith a small stable that=s not easy to do.@ This Sunday=s Donn H. has the potential to be thestable=s biggest victory to date. In preparation for therace, Bourbon Courage worked a bullet Tuesdaymorning, breezing through four furlongs in :47.55 atPalm Meadows Training Center. It was the 5-year-oldsthird bullet the in a row.

AWe=re very happy with where Bourbon Courage isright now. We=ve always told [trainer Kellyn Gorder] wedidn=t want to get dragged into a race because wemade a plan three months ago, but he=s looked great. We=re really looking forward to this Sunday,@ McMahonsaid. Hill added of Tuesday=s work, AHe did it all on hisown, too. The jockey had no idea he was going as fastas he was. Good horses work fast, so his workoutshave been encouraging.@ Bourbon Courage iscoming off a third-placefinish in the Harlan=sHoliday S. at GulfstreamPark. He has beenassigned 115 poundsfor the Donn, giving himan eight-poundadvantage over favoriteWill Take Charge(Unbridled=s Song). BothMcMahon and Hill said they believe the conditions inSunday=s Donn H. will be more favorable to BourbonCourage=s running style. AWe think the longer stretch is really going to helphim,@ McMahon explained. AHe closes a ton of groundin the stretch and the Harlan=s Holiday had a shortstretch. We feel like the weight and the longer stretchare going to help us.@ cont. p5

Bourbon Trail Runs Through Florida cont. While the partners are confident in BourbonCourage=s chances, they know that with the quality ofthe field, nothing is guaranteed. AIt feels like a mini Breeders= Cup to me,@ McMahoncontinued. AWinning Grade Is is never easy.@ Aside from Bourbon Courage, the stable boasts apromising 3-year-old in Bourbonize, a $40,000 FTKJULyearling who won his debut at Churchill last November, and annexed a one-mile Oaklawn allowance January 10in his sophomore debut. AHe=s one of those horses where everyone who goton him said he=s got an amazing stride and a great feelto him,@ Hill said. AHe had some hiccups early, but wemanaged to get through them.@ Bourbonize suffered two fractures early in his trainingand proved to be hard to handle. After he was gelded, however, he began to improve steadily. AIt was a big deal to get him where he is now,@ Hillsaid. ABut he=s matured mentally and he=s still maturing

physically. That=s the kindof horse we like to takeinto the spring, one who=sgoing forward and notbackwards.@ Bourbonize=s next testwill be the GIII SouthwestS. at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 17, where he willcompete against two otherpromising 3-year-olds in GI Hopeful S. winner

Strong Mandate (Tiznow) and GII Kentucky Jockey ClubS. Winner Tapiture (Tapit). The partners hope that astrong showing there will put Bourbonize in contentionfor a spot in the Kentucky Derby. ALike everybody, we have Derby dreams,@ Hill said.AThe Southwest is going to have a strong field, so wearen=t looking past it; there are no easy graded stakesanywhere. But if he keeps moving forward, we=ll keepmoving forward with our Derby fever.@ Both Bourbon Courage and Bourbonize are beingconditioned by trainer Kellyn Gorder, whom McMahonand Hill credit for much of the stable=s success. AWe=ve used a lot of other trainers--some really goodtrainers--but we=re growing and Kellyn is growing andhe is a great fit for us,@ McMahon said. AHe got both ofthose horses started from day one, so this wouldn=thappen without him.@ McMahon and Hill are looking to use the Bourbon Lanename to expand their reach beyond racing as well. OnMar. 1, the partners are releasing a bourbon calledPinhook that will feature horses from Bourbon LaneStable. Bourbon Courage will be featured on the firstbatch. AWe=re definitely trying to reach a mainstreamaudience, and the bourbon and Kentucky theme is a no-brainer,@ McMahon said. AWe=re trying to bring as much attention to racing aspossible,@ Hill added. AHopefully in the future aspartners, but at least as fans.@ Click here to share thisstory.

Bachelor Party (cont. from p1)

The flashy bay was tabbed a J “TDN Rising Star” J after a dazzling debut performance going a mile overthe Del Mar lawn Aug. 8. He burned up the turf in aspeedy wire-to-wire victory next time over that courseand distance in the Oak Tree Juvenile S. Sept. 4 andhad a near miss in the Zuma Beach S. on the SantaAnita sod Oct. 6. Kin Hui=s Diamond 100 Racing Club LLC purchasedDiamond Bachelor for $570,000at last year=s Barrett=s March 2-year-olds in training sale. He wasthe third highest priced juvenile atthe sale, following subsequentgrades stakes winners Corfu(Malibu Moon) and Havana(Dunkirk). After his blazingperformance in the Oak TreeJuvenile, Susan Magnier andWalmac Farm Director RobertTrussell bought into the colt whowas quickly making a name forhimself on the turf. AHe looked like a great prospectfor the Breeders= Cup grass ordirt,@ Trussell said as to why he was interested in thecolt. AWe think he is a great prospect and a real stallionprospect eventually. Patrick [Biancone] is my trainer andgood friend. He recommended to me that I go in on thedeal.@

It was this group of owners who made the finaldecision try the bay on the dirt in the Breeders= CupJuvenile as opposed to the GIBreeders= Cup Juvenile Turf, wherehe was likely to be one of thefavorites. AWe thought the upside was a lotmore [in the Juvenile],@ Trussellcommented. AIf he won it he wouldhave been Champion 2-year-old in alllikelihood, whereas you don=t havethat kind of upside winning the turf. Also, we thought the Juvenile Turfwas coming up tough and the dirtwas coming up kind of weak. Itlooked like it was an easier spot withmore upside. If he handled the dirtwe could have been sitting in a reallygood spot.@ Diamond Bachelor was given about two months offfollowing the Breeders= Cup and Biancone believes thatrest did him a world of good. AHe matured,@ Biancone remarked. AHe changedphysically. When you have a nice 2-year-old, you hopehe will do well at three. The break we gave him did hima lot of good. He put on a lot of weight and he isgrowing both physically and mentally.@ The bay returned to the worktab on New Year=s Eveand Biancone has slowly built up his works since then.

Bachelor Party cont. Breezing over the main track every six days like clockwork since his return to training, the distance of theworks has gradually increased from four furlongs toseven in his most recent work Jan. 30, which hecompleted in 1:26 3/5. AHe really is not a very difficult horse to train,@Biancone commented. AHe really loves to train and

loves to breeze. He isgradually improvingeach time. We thinkwe have him fit andready for Saturday.@ Biancone typicallysends DiamondBachelor out to breezetwo or three days priorto each race, but thatwill not be the casethis time. AHe will not work

anymore before the race,@ the trainer said. AHe haschanged with time and he is starting to understandmore of what we want. He is more manageable. He is ahigh-energy horse and we try before each race to take alittle bit of edge off him, but we do not have to do thatnow.@ Biancone is very happy with the way the horse iscoming into this test and believes the main questionwill be how he handles the dirt.

AEverybody knows he is talented,@ Biancone said.AThe question is if he is able to reproduce his talent onthe dirt and the answer will be Saturday. What wedon=t want is to force him to do something. Most of theWar Fronts are better on the turf anyway. He would bea little bit of an exception if he can really be as good onthe dirt as he is on the turf, but we will take a shot.@ If Diamond Bachelor shows that dirt is not for him inSaturday=s test, he will be returned to the turf. AThere is no question he is a great horse on the turf, but we are going to see how he runs Saturday,@Biancone said. AIf he gives us a big display, we will goon the Derby trail. If he does not, we will immediatelychange the road back to the turf. He deserves anotherchance.@ Biancone added, ALet me put it this way, if the racewas on the turf, I would tell you he would not bebeaten. Everybody thinks he is extremely good. Now,we have to let the horse do the talking. Let's hope helikes it and if he likes it, he is going to give us a verygood display.@ Click here to share this story.

HORSEPLAYERS HITTING ITS STRIDEBy J.M. Severni Tuesday=s episode of Horseplayers was the best ofthe three episodes that have aired so far. ABelmontBullet@ focused on a two-day handicapping contest atBelmont where all of the characters, aside fromChristian Hellmers, were vying for a spot in the topthree which would qualify them for a trip to theNational Handicapping Contest. Meanwhile, Hellmersspent his Breeders= Cup winnings on a trip to RoyalAscot. The show=s final character--Kevin Cox--wasintroduced. It looks as though the cocksure formermounted NYPD officer--known as the ABrooklynCowboy@--is going to play the bad cop throughout theseries. AI=m the best you=ve ever seen. Even if I lose, I=mstill the best,@ Cox boasted in his introduction. At one point, Peter Rotondo, Jr. and Matt Berniervisited Johnny Velazquez in the jocks room, which wasthe highlight of the episode as well as of the series sofar. Not only is Johnny V one of the most well-liked andrecognizable faces in the sport, but his insight intoriding dirt races versus grass races and handicappingpace was interesting to seasoned fans and racingbeginners alike. Aside from Cox, who won the contest, the rest of the crew didn=t fare well, which wassomewhat refreshing.

In the previous episodes most of the characters hadcashed big tickets, which can almost become tedious towatch. Instead of focusing strictly on the wagers, theepisode showed the ups and downs of a day at thetrack, which was both more realistic and entertaining towatch. Click here to view ABelmont Bullet.@
