AWhat a great sale--it was great from beginning to end on both days,@ Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sales director Paget Bennett said at the close of business Tuesday. AWe had people here from beginning to end and had money here all day.@ Through two sessions, 255 juveniles grossed $22,659,000. The average was $88,859--up 49.1% from a year ago when 329 horses sold for $19,601,000 and an average of $59,578. The median was up 45.2% to $45,000. AWe knew we were going to have a great sale, but to hit the million-dollar horse and to have the strength in numbers that we had with the prices and the buyers and the new buyers who have never purchased here before is huge,@ Bennett continued. AIt was not just the same people, the usuals, but to have plenty of new names on the summary is great.@ Tuesday=s session was topped by a filly by First Samurai ( hip 366). Consigned by Eisaman Equine, the juvenile sold for $475,000 to Texan Tom Durant. The filly was one of four to sell for over $400,000 on the day. A total of 13 horses brought $200,000 or more Tuesday and there were 31 over that mark for the entire sale. Sixteen reached that level a year ago. The depth of the Midlantic buying bench impressed consignor Justin Casse. AI think this sale demands a lot of respect,@ Casse said. AThere are people here to buy horses from the $30,000 level all the way to $1 million. It=s very similar to what we witnessed at OBS April. Obviously there is a smaller catalogue here, but there is just as much variety. The buyer base is here to support that. I=d say that one of the most refreshing things about this sale when you look at the top 20 horses, you=ll see so many names you haven=t seen this year. And that=s nice, because this is like the traveling circus, we all run into the same people. So it=s nice to see new money and new faces popping up and spending on the highest end and on the middle and lower end.@ Cont. p3 SHAMARDAL If you look at Progeny PP Counts for the last 90 days on the TDN website ( click here), you=ll see that the top 10 North American and European sires during this period each had 30 or more >unique progeny= register 36 or more total listings. RECORDS FALL AT MIDLANTIC SALE (cont.) The 2015 Midlantic catalogue cover was graced byrecent graduates and Grade I winners Bayern (OffleeWild), Dortmund (Big Brown) and Materiality (AfleetAlex). Bennett is already hoping for an equally strongcover in 2016. AThe sale has continued to grow with every year andI think the 2015 edition will show everyone that youcan bring any kind of horse here and expect to berewarded,@ she concluded.

First Samurai Filly to Durant Trainer Randy Morse, bidding on behalf of TomDurant, went to $475,000 acquire a filly by FirstSamurai during Tuesday=s session of the Midlantic sale.Hip 366, out of multiple stakes winner and multiple

graded stakes-placedSuperduper Miss (RobynDancer), was consigned byEisaman Equine. Sheworked a furlong last weekin :10 1/5. AI liked everything abouther--hopefully she can runas good as she looks,@Morse commented. AI likedthe way she breezed andher conformation--I thinkshe is a really nice filly.@

Durant, who owns car dealerships in Texas, hasabout 12 horses in training and has campaigned gradedstakes winners Sing Baby Sing, Most Feared, AwesomeHumor and Lunar Bounty. Morse, who said he was underbidder on a couple ofjuveniles during Monday=s first session of the sale, wasprepared to bid higher for the First Samurai filly. AI thought we would have to pay more actually,@ hesaid. AIt=s been very competitive--everybody knowswhat a good horse looks like.@ Stud El Aguila purchased the filly for $20,000 at lastyear=s Keeneland September sale. AA friend of ours bought her at Keeneland,@commented Barry Eisaman. AShe came to us fromKeeneland. She=s grown, she was always a pretty nicefilly, but she=s grown. I guess the biggest thing is thatshe developed into a classy, talented athlete.@ Eisaman added the juvenile=s popularity was nosurprise. AShe is a very, very nice filly,@ he said. AShe has somany qualities that everyone is looking for in a primeracing prospect; great mind, great soundness, great vetwork, tremendous speed and class.@

Of the final price, he added, AOur reserve was muchlower than that, but we knew she was extremelypopular and we let the market tell us what she wasworth.@

Unbridled=s Song Colt for Summit Thoroughbreds The New York-based partnership group SummitThoroughbreds, co-founded by trainer John Kimmel, acquired a colt by Unbridled=s Song for $450,000 latein Tuesday=s session fo the Midlantic Sale. Hip 439,consigned by Eddie Woods, is the first foal out of 2010GII Davona Dale S. winner Amen Hallelujah(Montbrook). AWe=re getting to the end of the Unbridled=s Songs,@Kimmel said of the late sire. A[The juvenile] is a horsethat, to me, had a lot of physical presence and he wasa good mover on the racetrack. He checked all theboxes.@ Bred by SF Bloodstock, the colt was a $280,000Keeneland September yearling. Amen Hallelujah, in foalto Distorted Humor, sold for $950,000 at the 2013Keeneland November sale. The colt will be freshened now, but Kimmel is lookingforward to him joining his shedrow this summer. AWe=re not thinking of him as an early summer horse, but he is going to go back to Eddie Woods--he had alittle sensitivity in a shin,@ Kimmel explained. AWe=ll lookto have him back in late Saratoga meet. He=s a niceprospect, there is a lot of action in the family. To me helooks a lot like his daddy and for that kind of money, Ithink we have a horse who has a lot of potential to be anice 3-year-old.@

AWe were thinking around $50-60,000,@ she said.AWe knew we had something special, but being bySilver Train we weren=t sure what would happen.@ Asked if this was the couple=s biggest success,Crystal Ryan said, ABy far. This is all of the rest of themput together.@ Crystal Ryan is a Michigan native who had beenriding reining horses before transitioning toThoroughbreds. Marcus Ryan is a transplanted Irishmanwho had been involved in steeplechasing. AThe morning we bought our first horse is the day wegot engaged,@ Marcus Ryan recalled. AA friend of ours told me, you know it=s serious whenyou buy a yearling together, the ring is definitelycoming,@ Crystal Ryan laughed. AThat just seals it.Marcus proposed to me here in Timonium.@

Bluegrass Cat Colt Shines in Timonium Hip 400 was led out unsold at $160,000 at theFasig-Tipton Florida sale at Gulfstream Park in March, but the Bluegrass Cat colt had flourished in the interimand sold in Timonium Tuesday for $450,000. TaylorMade=s Jacob West, sitting alongside pedigreeconsultant Eddie Rosen, made the winning bid onbehalf of an undisclosed client. Todd Pletcher, whoconditioned the juvenile=s Grade I-winning sire, will trainthe colt. A[Taylor Made] actually sold him as a yearling and it=swell documented in our system that we loved him,@commented West. AWe just had to give a little bit morefor him now.@ Out of Unbridled Melody (Unbridled=s Song), the coltis a full-brother to stakes winner Michael With Us and ahalf to Grade I-placed Tourist (Tiznow). After working afurlong in :10 1/5 at Gulfstream in March, he worked aco-bullet in :10 flat in Timonium last week. AI think in Florida, he was a victim of being around alot of horses that were stallion prospects,@ West said.AAnd everybody was looking for the athlete and thepedigree. But here, you=ve got to get the athlete. It=s atestament to this sale--and there is no knock on thestallions--but it=s a testament to the sale when the topthree horses over the past two years that have comeout of this sale have been by Offlee Wild, Afleet Alexand Big Brown. You=ve got to buy the athlete at thispoint in time.@ Bidding for the same clients earlier in Tuesday=ssession, West signed the ticket at $360,000 for hip342, a filly by Tale of the Cat. AThose were our two stars of the sale and we landedthe final punches and got them home,@ West said.

The Bluegrass Cat colt was consigned by RaulReyes=s Kings Equine, which purchased him for$90,000 at last year=s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Octobersale. AWe expected him to sell well and he sold well,@Reyes commented. AHe looked better here. He wasn=tdoing as well in Florida--his coat didn=t look that good. But he shined here.@

Bill Oppneheim cont. The 3-year-old Shamardal fiily Lucida was second toLegatissimo (Danehill Dancer) in the G1 English 1000Guineas at Newmarket, and will be among the favoritesto go one better in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas thisweekend; and his 3-year-old colts also include Zawraq, second favorite for the June 6 G1 Epsom Derby off animpressive win in Leopardstown=s 2000 Guineas Trial(Listed) at a mile last month. The three aforementioned3-year-olds are all trained in Ireland for Maktouminterests: Toscanini istrained by Mick Halford, and Lucida by Jim Bolger, for Godolphin; Zawraq istrained by Dermot Weld forSheikh Hamdan. Then, of course, there=sAble Friend, a 5-year-oldAustralian-bred gelding byShamardal, also based inHong Kong, who has wonsix in a row sinceNovember, including fourGroup 1=s, and is pointingfor the G1 Queen Anne S., the opening race at RoyalAscot. When you also factor in that he already also hasa successful sire son in Lope de Vega, the top EuropeanFreshman Sire of 2014, there=s every likelihood thatShamardal=s stature and influence haven=t peaked yet.To read Andrew Caulfield=s column on Able Friend andShamardal from last December (since which time AbleFriend has won three more Group 1=s), click here.

“The Fasig Maryland 2-Year-Old Sale ended too late for us to make this edition with it, so we will cover it next week, but it was looking well up. Before Maryland, 20% more 2-year-olds had been sold this year than last (partially the expansion of numbers at OBS March), for a 24% gain in gross revenues, and a 3% rise in average. For all NA/EU sales we cover to date, gross and average have been up single digits this year, but the gross is up by 68% since 2010, with steady improvement in the clearance rates from the catalogues, too.”

Bill Oppenheim cont. Divining Rod is a homebred for Roy and GretchenJackson=s Lael Stables and trained by Arnaud Delacour.Team Delacour, Arnaud and wife Leigh, are based atFair Hill; Arnaud arrived via fellow FrenchmanChristophe Clement, Leigh via Graham Motion. The Laelteam had won The Very One S., two races before thePreakness, for the second year running, with the6-year-old mare Ageless (Successful Appeal), butthere=s nothing for getting yourself known by havingnot just a Preakness runner, but the Preakness third. The Jacksons= confidence in them, and their ability todeliver a Preakness-placed horse for them, is helpingput the Delacours on the map. Tale of Verve, meanwhile, is the third Graded StakesHorse this year (including also the Grade II-winning fillyEkati=s Phaeton) from the first crop by Tale of Ekati, aseriously well-bred son of Tale of the Cat out of aSunday Silence half-sister to Sky Beauty, herself out ofDayjur=s half-sister by Nijinsky, Maplejinsky (so his thirddam is champion sprinter Gold Beauty). Bred andowned by Charles Fipke, Tale of Ekati won the 2008 GI Wood Memorial and GI Cigar Mile (bydisqualification, having been beaten a nose by HarlemRocker, who impeded him), and stands at Darby DanFarm. Tale of Verve=s Preakness second moves Tale ofEkati into fifth spot on the TDN Year-to-DateSecond-Crop Sire List (click here). So what did we learn for the GI Belmont; whatstands in the way of American Pharaoh and TripleCrown glory? Well, on paper,at least, it=s no cakewalk. On the other hand, he=s beaten almost all of them.Kentucky Derby fourth Frosted (Tapit), winner of the GIWood Memorial; sixth Materiality (Afleet Alex), winnerof the GI Florida Derby; seventh Keen Ice (Curlin);eighth Mubtaahij (Dubawi), winner of the G2 UAEDerby; 10th Carpe Diem (Giant=s Causeway), winner ofthe GI Blue Grass; 11th Frammento (first crop byMidshipman); and 16th-placed War Story (NorthernAfleet), all skipped the Preakness and could re-oppose.Materiality and Carpe Diem are trained by ToddPletcher, who could also send out Madefromlucky (firstcrop by Lookin At Lucky), who won the GII Peter Pan,but had previously been beaten twice by AmericanPharoah in Arkansas. Preakness second Tale of Verve isalso a likely runner, as is Peter Pan second ConquestCurlinate. American Pharoah is the clear form choice; ifhe gets the trip and is still moving forward, he=ll betough to beat. Frosted was the horse who came out ofthe pack against a slow pace in the Derby, andMateriality ran with credit having had a bad start; theyare the two you could make the best case for to springthe upset. People say this is a rich person=s game, and I guessone of the ways we know that is when you see horsesbought back for a lot of money at the sales. AmericanPharoah, as is commonly known, was bought back for$300,000 at Saratoga as a yearling, though he wassigned for by Ingordo Bloodstock.

Preakness second Tale of Verve was bred by CharlesFipke, and races for Charles Fipke, yet went throughtwo sales: his current trainer, Dallas Stewart, signed forhim for $150,000 at the same Saratoga sale asAmerican Pharoah, then he was signed for atKeeneland=s April 2-year-old sale, for $440,000, by SixFriends Syndicate. The same with the new favorite forthe June 6 G1 Epsom Derby, Anthony Oppenheimer=s(sadly, no relation) Golden Horn (Cape Cross), winner ofthe G2 Dante S. last week at York; he was a declaredbuy-back, at 190,000 guineas, in Tattersalls=s 2013October 1 Yearling Sale. Yet all these sales companiescan quite correctly say these horses all >went throughthe ring=, and, in several cases, >sold=. I don=t propose todo anything about it, but it=s interesting these breederswere all correct about those future Classic prospects.

After they bought himback, the Oppenheimers(sadly, no relation; did Imention that?) sent theCape Cross colt to JohnGosden to train. He wonhis only start at two, atthe >back-end= ofOctober over 8 1/2furlongs, but was readyearly and won the9-furlong Fielden S. at

the Newmarket Craven meeting in April. cont. p10

Frankie Dettori has been riding a lot for Gosden thisyear--and what a combination that is--since Gosden=sformer stable jockey, William Buick, went to Godolphin, along with James Doyle, at the beginning of the year.Frankie chose to ride Jack Hobbs (Halling), who hadwon a Sandown handicap by 12 lengths, in the Dante,so Buick, who was free, rode Golden Horn. It was aGosden one-two but in the >wrong= order, as GoldenHorn surged clear of Jack Hobbs, with last year=s G1Racing Post Trophy winner Elm Park, by the obscurePhoenix Reach, a good third. Golden Horn is now theDerby favorite, as short as 2-1 on Betfair, with theaformentioned Zawraq and the aforementioned ElmPark, at around 6-1 and 8-1 respectively, the currentsecond and third choices. The Ballydoyle camp of AidanO=Brien has supplied the last three DerbywinnersBCamelot, Ruler of the World, and Australia. The Coolmore triumvirate has won the last four, AndreFabre having trained the 2011 winner, Pour Moi, for>the lads=. At this writing it seems Coolmore=s bestchance to extend their string to five in a row lies withGiovanni Canaletto, named after an 18th-centuryVenetian painter and printmaker. A full-brother to Rulerof the World and half-brother to Duke of Marmalade,Giovanni Canaletto won his second and final start attwo impressively, missed a run at Chester last weekwith a bad scope, but is likely for this weekend=s G3Gallinule S. at the Curragh as his Epsom trial. Word thathe would run this weekend resulted in him becomingthe new fourth favorite, at around 11-1 on Betfairyesterday. The featured races at The Curragh this comingweekend will be the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas on Saturdayand the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas on Sunday. Unless theground is soft (which it has been a lot this month), G1English 2000 Guineas winner Gleneagles (Galileo) willgo for the double, in which one of his main opponentswill be the English Guineas third, Ivawood (from thefirst crop by Zebedee). The Irish 1000 on Sunday looksa very hot contest, with Lucida (Shamardal), theCoolmore legions, and the Big Bad Bob filly, BoccaBaciata, who will be attempting to do aLegatissimoBbacking up from a 10-furlong Listed win toa mile Classic.

DIVERSY HARBOR EUTHANIZED Glen Hill Farm=s >TDN Rising Star= Diversy Harbor(Curlin--Motokiks, by Storm Cat) was euthanizedTuesday due to complications from surgery to repair apair of broken sesamoids. The 4-year-old incurred theinjury during the GIII Santa Barbara H. at Santa Anita Apr. 18, in which she was pulled up by Hall of Famepilot Gary Stevens rounding the second turn. The bay underwent surgery at Alamo Pintado EquineMedical Center in Santa Barbara, California, two dayslater with hopes of a future as a broodmare, and wasgiven a good prognosis immediately following surgery. However, she got an infection three weeks later andbegan to show signs of rotation in her good leg, andhad to be put down.

AHeavy hearted to say Diversy Harbor didn=t make it,@Glen Hill Farm President Craig Bernick said via TwitterTuesday. AShe was a very good filly and a great patient. Her good foot rotatedtoo much and shewould have sufferedif she had beenaround any longer.@ Earning her TDNRising Star after animpressive last to firstdebut victory on theArcadia turf lastJanuary, DiversyHabor followed suitwith a victory in thatvenue=s China Doll S.The bay continued to live up to her early promise withplacings in the GI American Oaks, GII Honeymoon S.,GIII Autumn Miss S., GIII Robert J. Frankel S. and GIII Providencia S. The Tom Proctor trainee gained that seeminglyelusive first graded stakes victory this season in SantaAnita=s GII Buena Vista S. Feb. 16. She ended hercareer with a record of 12-3-4-1 and earnings of$377,690. Diversy Harbor was a half-sister to MGSW and GISPmillionaire Keertana (Johar), and MGSW and GISPSnow Top Mountain (Najran). Her dam Motokiks is ahalf to Italian Highweight Knifebox (Diesis {GB}) andMGSW Parochial (Mehmet). Motokiks produced a coltby Lemon Drop Kid last year and a filly by Candy Ride(Arg) this term.

GORESBRIDGE PUNCHES ABOVE ITS WEIGHTby Daithi Harvey For a relatively recent entrant into the internationalbreeze up market, Goresbridge Bloodstock Sales hasmade quite a splash both in the sales ring and on thetrack. This year sees the County Kilkenny-based salescompany host the 10th edition of its breeze-up saleMay 22. The inaugural sale back in 2006 featured 72lots with a top price of just i40,000. Among theselots, however, was the subsequent Italian Group 3winner Shot Bless (Ire) (Daggers Drawn) and a long listof individual winners, which provided enough impetusfor the intrepid boss of Goresbridge, Martin Donohoe,to commit to taking on the established Europeanauction houses with his family run business. cont. p11

Fast forward 10 years, and the sale has grown tobecome the largest in Europe and the only breeze-upsale in Ireland. In those 10 years two subsequent Group1 winners have been sold--Music Show (Ire) (Noverre)

and Fiesolana (Ire) (AussieRules)--for a combined total ofjust over i50,000. Numerousother group winners such asHitchens (Ire) (Acclamation {GB})and Dutch Masterpiece (GB)(Dutch Art {GB}) have also flownthe flag for the sales company, which has welcomed anincreased number of buyers fromall over the world year-on-year. This year sees 236 horsescatalogued, but it has taken a lotof hard graft and the proverbial>blood, sweat and tears= to get tothe situation to where thecompany can now proudlypromote the sale as a genuinesource of Group 1 horses.

The 52-year-old Martin Donohoe has been at thehelm of the company since 1995, and at that stageGoresbridge was focused on selling show jumpers, eventers and even antique furniture. They beganholding mixed sales of Thoroughbreds in the late 90suntil Donohoe spotted a gap in the market that hethought he could fill. ASo many Irish breeze-up horses were going toEngland to be sold and I thought surely we could keepsome of them here to do the same job,@ explainedDonohoe. AI approached a few of the major vendors andthey said they would support a new Irish sale and westarted the first year with 72 horses. We were thrilledwith how the first sale went and it gave us theconfidence to move forward. Each year since it hasgrown in both quality and quantity and we are veryhappy with where we are at the moment.@ From a logistical point of view the sale also workswell. Horses breeze at nearby Gowran Park Racecoursethe day before the sale and are then vanned three milesto the Goresbridge sales complex to be auctioned thefollowing day. AGowran Park is a wonderful facility and we are verylucky to have it nearby,@ said Donohoe. AIt=s a greattrack for breezing 2-year-olds; they always produce anice strip of well railed fresh ground and it=s very fair onhorses with just a gentle incline up the home straight.@ Donohoe also believes the timing of the sale is a bigfactor in its success.

AI think the fact that we sell towards the end of Maygives juveniles more time to develop naturally andconsignors aren=t under as much time pressure to workthem harder and younger. This is also borne out in theresults we have had on the track. Our horses may needa little more time but their longevity is well proven.Fiesolana, who ran in the Breeders= Cup last year, wona Group 1 at five years of age.@ An innovative feature Donohoe launched three yearsago was to host footage on the Goresbridge website ofall lots being hand-walked two weeks before the sale. AWe commissioned Sam Sangster of Sirecam to visitall the consignors and take footage of each lot at awalk,@ he explained. AWe get very positive feedbackfrom prospective buyers about this facility. It=sparticularly useful for overseas clients to get a look athorses before they travel, as it helps reduce theirworkload when they arrive at the sale.@ It would seem the customer is very much to the foreat Goresbridge. The hospitality is generous andDonohoe appears to treat all buyers with the samerespect, whether they intend to spend i5,000 or 20times that amount. Last year at Goresbridge saw the first 2-year-oldsbought specifically to go to America when bloodstockagent Brendan Heeney signed for two fillies byExcellent Art (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) and Approve (Ire)

(Oasis Dream{GB}). Thoughneither has wonyet it looks only amatter of timebefore theExcellent Art filly, now called StormyAlexis (Ire) makesher breakthrough. In four starts shehas made theframe each time, most recently atGulfstream Park

Feb. 15 when third in a maiden special weight fortrainer George Weaver, and Heeney sees more thanenough potential in Stormy Alexis to warrant a returntrip to Goresbridge this week. AI really believe she=s a stakes filly; she has been quiteunlucky in her races so far and if she gets a clear run inher work and some luck in running I think she=ll soonshow her real ability,@ Heeney said. AI=m definitely goingback to Goresbridge as I think it offers something thatis hard to find over here. I don=t go there looking for asprinting type; if you=re in the market for a horse to gomaybe seven to nine furlongs on the turf, then youhave some real nice options there.@ cont. p12

Heeney is also a big fan of the walking in-handfeature on the website and commented, AI think it=s agreat idea, I wish more sales companies would do it. Ifind it really useful to get a certain amount of the workdone before I even leave home. Time is of a premiumfor me as the sales calendar is pretty packed so it helpsto be able to see some lots beforehand, even if they areonly walking.@ So what does the future hold for this thriving salethat arose from humble origins? Above all else, MartinDonohoe hopes to continue to strengthen the quality ofhorse on offer but is also keen to add a select Horse-In-Training section, possibly as soon as 2016. AI am convinced a quality selection of horses withform will work and I=m keen to develop it as part of thesale,@ he explained. AI have mentioned it to a fewtrainers already and I would be very hopeful that I canget support for such a venture next year. We all knowthe international demand for horses with quality form isstrong, whether it=s for a potential Royal Ascot 2-year-old or a progressive 3-year-old staying type forAustralia; it=s something that I definitely think willwork.@ This year=s sale would appear to hold something forall tastes. Stock by Big Brown, Drosselmeyer, LemonDrop Kid, Candy Ride (Arg), Haynesfield and Birdstonewill help make U.S. visitors feel at home, but it=s horsesby the likes of Lope De Vega (Ire), New Approach (Ire),Raven=s Pass, Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire), Peintre Celebre,Teofilo (Ire), Iffraaj (GB), Holy Roman Emperor (Ire) andZebedee (GB) that offer prospective U.S. buyerssomething different. Some potential box office lots could include lot 178,a Raven=s Pass (Elusive Quality) colt from the family ofGroup 1 winners Youmzain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}),Creachadoir (Ire) (Kings Best), and Pilsudski (Ire) (PolishPrecedent). Mayfield Stables consign lot 79, a RodericO=Connor (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) half brother to Group 3-winning sprinter Sir Maximilian (Ire) (Royal Applause{GB}), while lot 35, from Powerstown Stud, is an Iffraaj(GB) (Zafonic) filly out of a half sister to GII Breeders=Cup Juvenile winner Pounced (Rahy). Lot 137, a coltfrom Kilminfoyle House Stud, is also a likely one onpedigree, being by promising sophomore sire Paco Boy(Ire) (Desert Style {Ire}) out of a half-sister to multipleGroup 1 winner Notnowcato (GB) (Inchinor {GB}).

ELM PARK IN DERBY HUNT David Redvers is convinced Elm Park (GB) (PhoenixReach {Ire}) will be in the G1 Investec Derby shake-upafter finishing third in his comeback run in York=s G2 Dante S. last week.Andrew Balding's G1Racing Post Trophywinner raced prominentlybefore the JohnGosden-trained duo ofGolden Horn (GB) (CapeCross {Ire}) and JackHobbs (GB) (Halling)quickened away insidethe final furlong. ButRedvers, racing managerto Sheikh Fahad AlThani's Qatar Racing, believes Elm Park was the horseto take out of the race. "I think, as Andrew would describe it, it was theperfect prep run,@ Redvers told At The Races. AHe wasa bit burly and getting a bit lazy, as we could see fromthat piece of work at Newbury, and it will have blownthe cobwebs away. AOf all the horses to take out of the race, obviouslythe winner was impressive but he'd had the benefit of arun, our fella will come on an awful lot for it. I thinkgoing further will definitely help him but the only worrywould be if it was rattling fast, how he would comedown the hill?@ Continued Redvers, AEpsom is the ultimate test of aracehorse. You cannot be certain how they'll handle ituntil they come round Tattenham Corner. I've neverseen a more obvious case of a horse training on justlooking at him, last year he was a shell of a horse buthe's really filled out."

"It's a shame, but Estidhkaar's scope was not greatand you need to be 100% if you are going to be aplayer in a Classic," the Wiltshire handler posted on hiswebsite. "We'll give him time to recover and look forsomething else. Ivawood worked well [Tuesdaymorning] and he is in really good form. We are alsotaking Lexington Times. The owners [Middleham ParkRacing] are keen to have a crack, and the colt seems tohave thrived for a little break." Sixteen colts are still in the Classic, with impressiveNewmarket winner Gleneagles topping the list. His trainer Aidan O'Brien has also left in Cape ClearIsland (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Highland Reel (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}), Sir Isaac Newton (GB) (Galileo {Ire}),Smuggler's Cove (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), TheWarrior (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) and War Envoy(War Front). Roger Varian is hoping for some ease in the ground toallow Belardo (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) to show his truecolors. The Lope De Vega colt looked every inch aClassic contender after rounding off a fine juvenilecampaign with a Group 1 success in the G1 DewhurstS. at Newmarket. But he was never a factor on his firststart as a 3-year-old when he finished down the field inlast month's G3 Greenham S. at Newbury. "He doesn't want it too quick,@ Varian told At TheRaces. AI think good ground and anything easier thangood is favorable. He did some very nice work onSunday morning, the plan is to run him on Saturday andwe just hope it doesn't dry out too much. He didn'thave a hard race, he's a fresh horse. We'd be veryconfident that, provided the ground isn't too quick,we've a very good horse on our hands still." The Ger Lyons-trained Cappella Sansevero (GB)(Showcasing {GB}), Convergence (Ire) (Cape Cross{Ire}) and Endless Drama (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) stillremain in the hunt, while Carbon Dating (Ire) (TheCarbon Unit), Tombelaine (First Defence) and Mohaayed(GB) (Intikhab) complete the list.

DEVONSHIRE ADDED TO IRISH 1000 GUINEAS Trainer Willie McCreery feels Devonshire (Ire) (FastCompany {Ire}) deserves her place in the line up aftershe was supplemented by Godolphin for Sunday's G1

Tattersalls Irish 1000Guineas at The Curragh. The Fast Company fillyhas been second on bothher outings in Group 3company this season andin an open yearconnections felt it wasworth taking the plunge.Having chased homeDermot Weld's Stormfly(Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire})

over seven furlongs in the G3 Leopardstown 1000Guineas Trial S. April 12, she turned that form aroundbut was beaten by Kissed By Angels (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})a month later in the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000Guineas Trial S. May 10.

"The owners have been very sporting," saidMcCreery. "She seems in good form and the conditionswon't bother her. I don't particularly think she needssoft ground to be seen at her best, but she seems tohandle it a lot better than others. It could be very tackyby the weekend and we know she goes through it. Shewas staying on strongly the other day, though, andlater in the season she might get a bit further than that. We'll see how she gets on this weekend and then takeit from there." David Wachman's Legatissimo (Ire) (Danehill Dancer{Ire}) and Jim Bolger's Lucida (Ire) (Shamardal), firstand second in the G1 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, were among the fillies taken out at the forfeit stage. A total of 21 fillies are still in contention, includingAidan O'Brien's Kissed By Angels. O'Brien could alsorun Found (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Outstanding (Ire) (Galileo{Ire}), Qualify (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and WeddingVow (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Jessica Harrington has two strong candidates in JackNaylor (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) and Bocca Baciata(Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) while Jim Bolger has left inPleascach (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), Mainicin (Ire) (Teofilo{Ire}) and Steip Amach (Ire) (Vocalised). Mick Channon's Malabar (GB) (Raven=s Pass) ran wellto finish fourth at Newmarket while Mick Halford'sRaydara (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}) was one of thebest juveniles last season. Dermot Weld has a couple of interesting contendersin Joailliere (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Stormfly. James Given's pair of Pastoral Girl (GB) (PastoralPursuits {GB}) and Russian Punch (GB) (Archipenko)and the Clive Brittain-trained Teosroyal (Ire) (Teofilo{Ire}) are others still engaged.

TOORMORE CAMP MULLS OPTIONS Connections of Toormore (Ire) (Arakan) areconsidering a wealth of options following the colt's

narrow second in theG1 Al Shaqab LockingeS. at Newbury lastSaturday. Thehighweighted juvenile inEurope in 2013, was aleading candidate forClassic glory last termbut failed to hit theexpected heights beforeeventually bouncingback to something like

his best when third in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. on his final start. He has hitthe ground running for trainer Richard Hannon andowners Middleham Park Racing this season though, going down by just a neck to stablemate Night ofThunder (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the Newbury Group 1.cont. p14

Middleham Park's Tim Palin commented, "It wasgreat to see him back. He did it in almost perfectmatter, but the winner was better on the day and wasprobably a fitter horse. We'll now spend hours andhours working out what to do next.@ ADo we drop him in class for a confidence boost or dowe go for broke for the [G1] Queen Anne [S. at RoyalAscot June 16], which is probably going to be the raceof the year?@ continued Palin. AThe other option is tostep him up in trip. Kieren Fallon said after the QEII thathe would get a mile and a quarter, so do we go the[G1] Eclipse [S. at Sandown July 4] route?"

AROD EYES QUEEN ANNE The G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot is a possiblenext port of call for Arod (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) followinghis tremendous effort when third in the G1 Al ShaqabLockinge S. at Newbury last weekend. Trainer PeterChapple-Hyam has never made any secret of the regardin which he holds the Teofilo colt and after winning aWindsor maiden last April, he went on to fill therunner-up spot in the G2 Dante S. at York before

finishing fourth in the G1Epsom Derby. After apleasing return inNewmarket's G3 Earl ofSefton S., Arod droppedback further in trip forSaturday's Group 1 featureand turned in arguably acareer-best effort to finishthird behind the RichardHannon-trained pair of Night

of Thunder (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Toormore (Ire)(Arakan). Chapple-Hyam is keen to stick to a mile forthe foreseeable future and believes his stable star willbe an even more potent force on a faster surface. "He hasn't always taken his races that well in thepast as he's a horse who always gives everything, buthe's come out of Saturday really well and he's veryfresh,@ said Chapple-Hyam."We were obviouslydelighted with how he ran and he's getting quicker ashe gets older, which is why we decided to drop himback to the mile. I think we'll probably stick to that tripfor now and I suppose we will look at that [G1 QueenAnne S. at Royal Ascot June 16], which will probablybe even tougher, but we think we can find a bit ofimprovement. He's growing up now and I think evenfaster ground than last weekend will suit him--the fasterthe better, really."

KARAKONTIE OUT OF ISPAHAN The Niarchos Family=s Karakontie (Jpn) (Bernstein), awinner of the GI Breeders= Cup Mile last fall, will missthis weekend's G1 Prix d'Ispahan and is unlikely tomake the trip to Royal Ascot as he continues to recoverfrom a foot injury. The Jonathan Pease-trained colt alsowon the G1 French 2000 Guineas during a tremendous3-year-old campaign and connections had hoped to see

him make his seasonalreappearance in lastweekend's G1 Al ShaqabLockinge S. at Newbury. However, he was ruled outof the Newbury Group 1after suffering a setback andmay not return until the G1Prix Jacques le Marois atDeauville Aug. 16.

Alan Cooper, racing manager for the Niarchos Family, said, "He won't be going in the d'Ispahan. His entrywas just a back-up for the Lockinge, whichunfortunately he had to miss after a setback with a footissue. He is very well and in good form, but we are justbiding our time with him to make sure he fully recoversfrom the foot problem. I would say Royal Ascot isprobably a long shot. It's unlikely he'll run there. I thinkit is more likely he'll be given plenty of time ahead of asummer objective, possibly the Prix Jacques le Marois, but we'll wait and see."

GROUND TO DECIDE RACE FOR >SOLE= Sabena Power=s Sole Power (GB) (Kyllachy {GB})'sdestination this weekend depends entirely on whetherthe ground is quicker at Haydock or The Curragh. EddieLynam's star sprinter is in the G2 Betfred Temple S. atHaydock, a race he won in 2011 and was second in ayear later, but he could stay at home for the G2Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands S. One thing in TheCurragh's favor is that Richard Hughes, Sole Power'sregular rider, will be in Ireland to partner Ivawood (Ire)(Zebedee {GB}) in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000Guineas. His main early season aim is the G1 King'sStand S. at Royal Ascot, a race he has won for the pasttwo seasons. Lynam told the Irish Times, "He'll go wherever theground comes up ok for him. Basically it's all about theKing's Stand with him, but like all of us as he's gettingolder he's getting heavier between his races so I'd liketo get a run into him. If the ground is ok I wouldn'tmind running him at The Curragh and we know RichardHughes will be there so there wouldn't be a problem interms of a jockey. We'll simply have to see aboutground."

The changes proposed by the NTRA on behalf of itsmembership and the Thoroughbred racing industrywould positively impact all levels of horseplayers, regardless of whether a person typically wagers $1,$100 or $1,000. For example, the amount wagered bya Pick Six player who hits with one of 140combinations on a $1-minimum wager would be $140,which is the total amount bet into the Pick Six pool. Currently the Aamount wagered@ is calculated usingonly the $1 bet on the single winning combination. Byunderstating the amount wagered in this manner, theIRS is imposing significant additional reporting andwithholding obligations on horseplayers while creatingunnecessary paperwork for the IRS. The NTRA has created an easy-to-use form thatmakes it simple for the public to submit an e-maildirectly to the appropriate IRS and U.S. Treasuryofficials at www.ntra.com/IRScomment.
