Ac- cording to trainer Nick Zito, the colt has a small fracture in the sesamoid of his left front ankle. AIt's at the back of the ankle, and it pulled away from the sesamoid,@ Zito said. AIt's very small. In fact, [veteri- narian Dr. Rick Fischer] took the picture again and had a technician look at the digital images, because there's no swelling there. He's actually walking sound.@ Zito said it was too early to tell if surgery would be required. The injury may have occured during War Pass=s runner-up effort in the GI Wood Memorial S. The dark bay appeared to exit the race in good order, but a few days later his connections felt something wasn=t quite right. AWe had some good days, but we started to get some bad days,@ said Zito. AThe Wood was a killer--anybody who saw it knows it was a gut-wrenching performance. The race took its toll, but when he got back to the barn at Belmont, he was great--that=s the heart he=s got.@ As for his progno- sis, the conditioner said, AWhat I=ve got to do is give him a few months off, see the healing process, and go through all the motions. I=ll take the pictures over to Dr. [Larry] Bramlage on Monday, see what he thinks and we=ll go from there.@ The winner of the GI Champagne S. and GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile at two, he has com- piled a record of 7-5-1-0 and earnings of $1,583,400. ANOTHER DERBY HORSE FOR PLETCHER? Just over a week ago, it looked like they might run the 134th Kentucky Derby without reigning Eclipse Award trainer Todd Pletcher. But, after saddling Behindatthebar (Forest Wildcat) to a one-length victory in yesterday=s GII Coolmore Lexington S. at Keeneland, Pletcher could have as many as three in the gate on the first Saturday in May. It has not yet been determined if Behindatthebar will head to Louisville with GI Toyota Blue Grass hero Monba (Maria=s Mon) and Blue Grass runner-up Cowboy Cal (Giant=s Causeway), a possible Derby candidate. Padua Stables= Satish Sanan, the colt=s majority owner, said after the Lexington, AWe don=t know if he likes the dirt or not, but we will get together and decide what to do.@ With the Lexington purse of $201,5000 in the bank, the bay colt would sneak into the Derby field on earnings. Cont. p3 SEBRING A SLIPPER SENSATION Sebring (Aus) (More Than Ready) became the first undefeated winner of the G1 Golden Slipper S. with a determined victory over glamour colt Von Costa de Hero (Aus) (Encosta de Lago {Aus}) at Rosehill Saturday. Favored for this race for the past three months, Sebring looked to have ruined his chances when last of 16 out of the barriers. But the tena- cious colt stealthily made up ground before bursting clear in the straight--only to have the shadow of the larger- than-life Von Costa de Hero appear, sprinting from out wide like a freight train. But in a battle of David-and- Goliath proportions, little Sebring pinned his ears back and fought Von Costa de Hero tooth-and-nail to the line. If 30,000 racegoers were uncertain of the result, exuberant jockey Glen Boss was not, raising his whip in a victory salute as a large group of owners decked out in the Star Thoroughbreds purple and white went wild. AEveryone said to me, >This horse has not run for seven weeks,= and I said >Why worry about it, he has got one thing on his side, [trainer] Gai Waterhouse,=@ Boss said. Having won two barrier trials before Christmas,Sebring made a winning racetrack debut Jan. 19 in atwo-year-old open race, and repeated the dose Feb. 16,winning the Listed Canonbury S. He then added theListed Breeders= Plate Mar. 1 to his tally, but, afterreceiving treatment for an infection, he was not seen inthe traditional Slipper lead-up races. It could be ex-pected that the colt would be on the muscle for his firststart in seven weeks, but such was not the case. AItried to get him gee-ed up in the barriers, but he blewthe start,@ Glen Boss said. AHe walked out. It didn=tconcern me, because he got into a good spot early andkept his composure. There were a couple of timeswhen he lost his footing and he seemed to drop off, butno sooner had it happened and he quickly picked upagain. He came out so quick at the 200 meters, I feltlike he was going to win, but [when Von Costa de Heroclosed], I was getting a bit desperate; I looked like agoose all over him.@ Gai Waterhouse said Denise Mar-tin=s Star Thoroughbreds, which operates in an officeadjacent to the stable headquarters in Randwick, de-served victory at the highest level. AThis is sensational,@said Waterhouse, celebrating her third Golden Slippertrophy. AThis is everything you dream about--here is ahorse owned by people who have $10,000 or $20,000to spend on owning a horse, and they win a $3.5-mil-lion race. This is what racing in Australia is all about. Itis a triumph for syndication, for Star Thoroughbreds.@

Waterhouse, whose 2004 Triple Crown winner DanceHero (Aus) led the Slipper field out under grey skiesyesterday, said Sebring would be pointed toward theTriple Crown, providing he took no harm from his Slip-per outing. The second leg is the A$800,000 AJCSires= Produce S. at Randwick Apr. 26, ahead of theA$450,000 Champagne S. over a mile at the sametrack May 3.

Big Win for the Little People... Denise Martin linked up with Waterhouse 14 yearsago, and estimates she has since brought some 3,000first-time owners to racing. Their successes include G1 Flight S. winner Danglissa (Aus), but Sebring wasthe first Slipper runner for Star Thoroughbreds. He israced by James Hazzisevastos, David and LukeHenderson of Team Henderson Racing Syndicate,Shahen Mekertichian, Margaret Butler, John and AnneMcDonnell, Denise Dunphy, Brian Leonard, JosephScrenci and Wendy Mullens. AThey are terrific peopleand, even before today, they have become lifelongfriends, and now they have a wonderful colt together,@said Martin. The syndicate snatched the A$2-millionwinning purse from the well-heeled connections of theplacegetters on a day when modestly priced horsesshone. Darley recently purchased a 50-percent share inVon Costa de Hero in a deal that reportedly valued thecolt at A$10 million.

Drawn awkwardly in barrier nine in an11-horse field,Tuesday Joy settled in sixth on the railsearly. Jockey Darren Beadman eased her out in thestraight, and she came around the heels of the leadersand romped to the line. AShe is a superb mare, isn=tshe?@ Waterhouse enthused. Going to Europe is an op-tion, and we will talk about it in the next few weeks;there is no rush.@ Tuesday Joy, the winner of the G1 Coolmore Classic on this day last year, had herspring aspirations curtailed due to the EI outbreak inNSW. SKIES ANYTHING BUT CLOUDY AT INGLIS Steady rain throughout the week has not deterredhordes of potential buyers from inspecting yearlingsahead of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, which kicks off at 3 p.m. today at the Inglis Newmarketsale complex at Randwick. Buyers from Hong Kong,Japan and South Africa, as well as a smattering ofNorth Americans, including trainer Todd Pletcher=sfather J.J. and U.S. buyer Jon Kelly, are in attendance, along with a strong contingent of local trainers. InglisManaging Director Mark Webster said the sale companyhoped to finish on par with last year=s figures. AWe areaiming to come close to last year,@ Webster com-mented. AWe are not expecting to exceed last year, which was 25-percent up on average. The market isstrong, but I don=t think we can record a similar gainthis year. But we are in a better position than wethought we would be, and if we can come close to lastyear=s average, we will be happy. Vendors are run offtheir feet, and that has been happening since Monday. Ithink it is a good sign.@ Inglis has been at pains to pointout the number of Group 1 winners bought around thesale median, and Webster said the Golden Slipper re-sult, with a A$130,000 colt saluting, underscored thefact that top horses could be bought relatively cheaply.AI am very happy with Sebring (Aus) (More Than Ready)winning--we didn=t sell him, but Denise [Martin] and Gai[Waterhouse] have a wonderful group of owners [and]they are great ambassadors,@ Webster continued. AIt isabsolutely fantastic for the industry--you don=t have tobillionaire to own a Slipper winner.@ Webster is alsoencouraged by the diversity in the catalogue. AThe otherpoint I would make is that I believe the progeny from awide range of stallions will sell well,@ he offered. AItwon=t just be Redoute=s Choice (Aus) and Encosta deLago (Aus)--there are probably 10 hot stallions whoseyearlings buyers will compete for, but there won=t be aheap of people fighting over a handful of horses.@

Ready Right Now... More Than Ready has 24 yearlings catalogued andtheir collective profile has escalated in the wake of theGolden Slipper win of Sebring (Aus). Vinery Stud=sAdam White points out that More Than Ready was thechampion first-season sire with representatives such asGroup 1 winners Perfectly Ready (Aus), Benicio (Aus)and Carry On Cutie (Aus). AHe has had an unbelievablerun this season with his two-year-olds, and now he isleading two-year-old sire by over A$2 million,@ hestated. AHe has got some lovely types at Easter, espe-cially fillies. We always had a lot of faith in him. Wealways knew he would be a great horse, but the mareshe covered in his third and fourth year, we thought hewould go a little quiet and then come back. What he isdoing now is happening 12 months earlier than whatwe thought. His best crop, in terms of mare quality andtypes, are yearlings now. They are mares he servedafter he was champion first-season sire.@ White nomi-nated a More Than Ready filly from Regrowth (Aus)(Unbridled=s Song), to be offered as lot 328 by Segen-hoe Stud, among the Southern Halo stallion=sstand-outs. Regrowth is a half-sister to the dam of2007 G1 Golden Slipper winner Forensics (Aus) and hersecond dam True Blonde (Aus) is a half-sister to influen-tial sire Snippets (Aus).

Distaff Diversity... One feature of a superlative catalogue is the numberof yearlings who are the first or second foals fromoutstanding racemares. While familiar Easter namessuch as Egyptian Ibis (NZ), Jade Tiara (Aus), Tambour(Aus), Tugela, Picadilly Circus (Aus), Prawn Cocktail(Aus) and Twiglet (Aus) are represented, there are asignificant number of first foals from newly retiredGroup 1-winning mares. In the first session, examplesinclude G1 New Zealand Oaks winner Bramble Rose (lot13); G1 Coolmore Classic winner Danni Martine (Aus)(lot 66); and G1 SAJC Oaks winner Dowry (Aus) (lot88). The first foal from G1 Hong Kong Derby winnerElegant Fashion (Aus) (lot 96) has been withdrawn.Another feature is an increasing trend towards mareswith international suffixes as Australian breederssteadily increase their purchases abroad. This year thecatalogue features 62 yearlings by U.S.-bred mares, 20from Ireland, 18 from Great Britain, and several fromSouth Africa, Canada, France and Argentina.

This is probablythe best draft on type we have ever brought to Sydney,we have been busier with inspections this year than wewere last year, and we had a great sale then.@
