Lake Junaluska’s lupine plants are blooming right now in a rainbow of colors. These flowers have a distinctive appearance with spikes of densely-packed flowers emerging 1 to 4 feet from the foliage.

Lupines are perennials, meaning they grow back each year from dormant roots, and they also help improve flower beds by adding nitrogen to the soil over time.

VISITORS THIS WEEK: SIGNS FOR HOPESigns for Hope, a nonprofit ministry centered around the adoption of deaf and hard of hearing children, will hold an immersion family retreat at Lake Junaluska June 5-10.

During the retreat, families from across the United States will come together to learn how to communicate better with their adopted children through sign language.

There will be programming for the children and their siblings along with workshops for their parents. The organization will also celebrate their 10-year anniversary.

This is Signs for Hope’s first time at Lake Junaluska, and founder Becky Lloyd said she chose the lake because of the Wilson Center Children’s Complex, which will provide the children with a inclusive location for learning and growth.

“Just being able to sign, and

everybody knows what they are saying, and to find out that there are other children just like them— it’s huge because most of these children do not attend deaf schools,” said Lloyd.

The faith-based organization’s mission includes providing resources for adoptive families—such as the retreat at Lake Junaluska—as well as more preliminary work, such as connecting deaf and hard of hearing children with searching families.

Signs for Hope also expands this mission beyond the United States, partnering with organizations in the Philippines, Honduras and Vietnam.

Lloyd said in the end, their ultimate purpose is to create faith opportunities for the children.

“We’re making sure they have opportunities, through their own language, to learn about Jesus, and to learn all the different things that He has for them to know,” said Lloyd.

HISTORICAL MOMENTS: HATTIE POLK’S FIRST VISIT TO LAKE JUNALUSKA Lake Junaluska is a place of new beginnings—especially during the summer.

In the summer of 1943, 75 years ago, longtime Lake Junaluska resident Hattie Polk made her first visit to Lake Junaluska.

She was 18 years old and visiting the grounds with her church youth group.

Also at Lake Junaluska that summer was Charles Polk. She didn’t know it yet, but he was the man who would become her husband.

That summer, Hattie crossed the bridge over the dam for the first time, and by the

time she reached the other side, she had decided on two aspects of her life.

“Right then, I knew two things: I was with the man I wanted to marry, and I wanted to make our home right here at the lake,” Hattie said. Both of these came true.

Recently, Hattie has become an advocate for the restoration of the bridge that inspired her.

“For me, the bridge has been a constant source of happiness,” Hattie said. “It’s the front door that is always open to everyone.”

PLANT OF THE WEEK: LUPINE FLOWERS

Hattie and her late husband Charles Polk cool off after crossing the bridge over the dam in 1943.

The mission of Lake Junaluska is to be a place of Christian hospitality where lives are transformed through the renewal of soul, mind and body

VOLUNTEER PROFILE: FLEA MARKET FELLOWSHIPOn Saturday, June 9, Lakeshore Drive will transform into a treasure hunter’s dream for the annual Junaluskans Flea Market.

The Junaluskans are a volunteer organization comprised of anyone who loves Lake Junaluska, and this is their largest fundraising event of the year. The proceeds go toward funding the Junaluskans’ various projects, such as the gardens, the Community Chorus, clean-up projects and more.

To the Junaluskans, though, the event offers more than just an opportunity to raise money for Lake Junaluska. It’s a time of fellowship and community with their fellow volunteers.

“I think everyone has such a good time,” said Judy LaFountaine, who co-chairs the event with her husband Ed.

“You meet new people, you get to make new friends. It’s just a happy, wonderful fellowship time.”

LaFountaine, who is a longtime volunteer at Lake Junaluska, says the true fun happens on the setup day before the flea market when everyone works hard and enjoys each other’s company.

The past few years, the Junaluskans have worked hard to invite many new volunteers into their projects; last year’s flea market had 131 volunteers, 20 of whom were new to Lake Junaluska or the flea market.

The flea market will take place on June 9 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on 91 N Lakeshore Drive. Early bird shopping is available at 7:30 a.m. for $5.
