Year 4 Week 7 English

Remember, when you see it means you have something to do!

This is our final week of work before the Summer holidays!


Write these words down, say them, then have a go at spelling them.

This week we are going to have a look at some poetry.

We are looking at a poem called 'The River' by Valerie Bloom.

It uses metaphors to describe a river.


The River by Valerie Bloom

The River's a wanderer, A nomad, a tramp, He never chooses one place To set up his camp.

The River's a winder, Through valley and hill He twists and he turns, He just cannot be still.

The River's a hoarder And he buries down deep Those little treasures That he wants to keep.

The River's a baby, He gurgles and hums, And sounds like he's happily Sucking his thumbs.

The River's a singer, As he dances along, The countryside echoes The notes of his song.

The River's a monster, Hungry and vexed, He's goggled up trees And he'll swallow you next.


Can you answer these questions about The River?

1) Why does the writer say the river 'never chooses a place to set up his camp'?

2) Can you find a word in the poem that means angry?

3) Why does the writer say the river cannot sit still?

4) How many pairs of rhyming words can you find in the poem?

5) What is the writer talking about when she says the river 'gurgles and hums' what could be making that noise?

Today we are going to start creating our poem. It's all about vocabulary today.

Our poem is going to be about something else natural. Your choice.

You could do...

Mountains, Lakes, Waterfalls, Tsunamis, Earthquakes.


For mine I am going to do a waterfall.

We are going to use our senses to make a mindmap that describes our word.

Today we are going to turn our descriptive sentences into a poem.

We are going to try and write a rhyming couplet poem. This is when each verse has 2 lines that rhyme.

Here is an example...

Can you underline the rhyming pairs?


We described 6 senses yesterday, so our poem can have 6 verses! We leave a line after each verse.

Here is an example of 2 verses...

The water crashes into the rocks below,

The stones are crumbling with every blow.

Sounds of smash, clatter and smash,

The water descends with a deafening splash.


Write your 6 verse poem.

rhymezone.com is useful for finding words that rhyme.

Don't just pick any word, make sure they make sense in your poem!


Thursday

How many different words for hot can you think of?

Place them in order from coolest to hottest!


Shape Poems!

Shape poems are a really interesting way of displaying your poem.

They also are a great way to make your reader read them in a certain way. You can add pauses through the shape of the poem.

Here are some examples...


They're actually much harder to make than you might think.

First, we need to draw a simple shape that matches our poem.

It's best to do this lightly with a pencil!

I could do the shape of waterfall, a giant wave for a tsunami, a shaky building for an earthquake.


Then we need to decide how we are going to write our poem from yesterday.

This might take a few attempts to fit it in! You might have to make all the verses flow into one.


Now you've done your shape and added your text. Add some splashes of colour to your shape poem to make it stand out! You could even make some of the exciting words bold or colourful!


Friday

Can you add an interesting sentence opener to these BORING sentences?!

The sky was grey.

The lake was still.

The house was deserted.


Well, this would have been our last day together. Very sad I know!

So I thought I would try to combine our English with some memories of Year 4 and some poetry!

Let's have a look at mesostic and acrostic poems.


An acrostic poem, uses the first letter of the subject of the poem to start each line. You have DEFINITELY seen these before!


A mesostic poem - has the letters down the middle of the page, and the sentence fits around it. They are a bit harder to write!


Your task today is to try and write an acrostic or a mesostic poem about your time in Year 4. If you want to challenge yourself try to

4 as 'Four'.
