28th Sunday of Ordinary Time + October 10, 2021FIRST READING—Wisdom 7:7-11I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her, nor did I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. Beyond health and comeliness I loved her, and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep. Yet all good things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at her hands.

RESPONSORIAL—Psalm 90:12-13, 14-15, 16-17 Response: Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!

Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain wisdom of heart.Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants! (R.)

Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days.Make us glad, for the days when you afflicted us, for the years when we saw evil. (R.)

Let your work be seen by your servants and your glory by their children;and may the gracious care of the LORD our God be ours; prosper the work of our hands for us! Prosper the work of our hands! (R.)

SECOND READING—Hebrews 4:12-13Brothers and sisters:Indeed the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart. No creature is concealed from him,but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of himto whom we must render an account.

GOSPEL— Mark 10:17-30 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.” He replied and said to him,“Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.”

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him,“You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, “Then who can be saved?”

Jesus looked at them and said, “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.” Peter began to say to him, “We have given up everything and followed you.”

Jesus said, “Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospelwho will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come.”

THE NICENE CREEDI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER JAY

“Please allow me to introduce myself...”

This epic line begins one of the greatest rock n’ roll songs by one of the greatest bands of all time! I recently walked by Heinz Field on Sunday when the Pittsburgh football team was playing in Green Bay. I noticed a huge tongue with the Steeler colors tattooed inside it. The Rolling Stones were coming to town! Besides the flashback to the 80’s when I saw them at Three Rivers Stadium, I started to sing:

Please allow me to introduce myself,I’m a man of wealth and taste.I’ve been around for a long, long year,Stole many a man’s soul and faith.

I was ‘round when Jesus ChristHad his moment of doubt and pain...Made damn sure that PilateWashed his hands and sealed his fate.

Pleased to meet you,Hope you guess my name. But what’s puzzling youIs the nature of my game.

The song rolls on like an old time cartoon as one scene sets up another by the devil so as to win your sympathy. In fact, the name of the song is “Sympathy for the Devil.” Its intention is to be an analysis of the evil side of humanity; one which allows itself to be too easily lead by the dark side (aka Lucifer) up to helping him accomplish the wickedness he craves. The theory is if you unmask the devil within yourself you can defeat the darkness.

Although a catchy song, the premise is completely wrong!

We cannot defeat the devil by unmasking his evil within us only. Jesus Christ—the name, the power and the divinity of God is how “we” defeat darkness. His light of love in the darkness of sin is what we need. Mass! Confession! Eucharistic Adoration! Heartfelt hearing of Scripture! Singing the litany of the Saints! Sacrificial love for the most vulnerable and needy! Not sympathy for the devil! Rather, sympathy for those in need, starting with ourselves.

The Stones song is sung as if the devil is the lead singer; I wonder how many of us casually sing with the Lucifer disguised as Mick Jagger more than with King David the Psalmist?

columnJASON GAWALDODirector of Faith [email protected] ords have power. When the right

person says the right thing at the right time, reality itself changes. “Will you marry me?” “You’re hired.” “You’re under arrest.” “Strike three!” Even the words of the deceased help them to continue speaking and give us a means to connect with them across the grave, such as when I read my mother’s journal. If our merely human words have the ability to change reality and communicate the presence of a person, how much more powerful must be the Word of God! This week, the Spirit invites us to meditate on the power of the Word of God.

God created the cosmos by his Word (see Genesis 1:3) and warned of impending destruction by his Word (see Genesis 6:7 and all the prophets). When the Word of God took on flesh, Jesus healed the sick by his Word (see Matthew 8:8) and transubstantiated bread and wine into his Body and Blood (see Luke 22:14-20). When the Word of God meets with a hardened heart such as that of Pharaoh in the Book of Exodus, it becomes a weapon that destroys. When the Word of God meets with a docile heart like that of Mary, God takes on flesh. It is no wonder the author of the Letter to the Hebrews describes the Word of God as “living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword.”

But notice another way this letter describes the Word of God: it is a person who knows and sees everything and before whom each of us will be judged. God’s Word is not simply a personified abstraction but a Divine Person. This Person who is the omniscient judge of the living and the dead is none other than Jesus, the Word of God incarnate. Whenever we encounter the Word of God, whether in written form in Sacred Scripture or in oral form in Sacred Tradition, we encounter Jesus himself. When the Scriptures are read at Mass or in my home, it is Jesus who speaks. When the Church teaches authoritatively on matters of faith and morals, it is Jesus who teaches.

The Bible often uses the expression of being “cut to the heart” (Acts 2:37) by the Word of God. This week, let the Word of God cut you to the heart by studying that Church teaching that you do not understand or agree with. Let the Word of God penetrate your soul by prayerful pondering of the Scriptures. The Spirit is challenging us all to let the Word of God be living and effective in our lives, to discern the reflections and thoughts of our hearts, and to render an account of our hearts and actions to Jesus.

ave you ever heard about those expensive classes in the malls at Gymboree stores where young kids do music and nursery rhymes? They are super popular for raising well-adjusted kids. Well, our Beaver Valley parishes will now have something way better than a Gymboree class! It’s called Making Music Praying Twice. The Great Grouping has been offering Making Music for five years now up at Saints John & Paul. Natalie and Jason Gawaldo spearheaded this amazing program for our churches. This year, there are three classes with 22 kids involved.

Our family was blessed to participate in Making Music for two years. Our children grew so much in that time. The kids learned a ton of songs and rhymes and music. They learn how to follow directions and to get along with others. They learned to transition and clean up when needed. They learned rhythm and pitch and tone. Most importantly they learned our Faith at an extremely early age, since the class is for newborns-to-5-year-olds. Picture this age of children on bended knee facing a statue of Jesus or Mary and singing a song or reciting a little prayer of praise. I can’t imagine how pleased our Lord and Blessed Mother must be at the offering of a Making Music class. I also have fond memories of bonding with my little ones during these classes... since the demands of life can get so busy it’s hard to remember to take time for little games and rhymes with your kids.

Bless yourself and a little one in your life by bringing them to Making Music this Fall.Classes are on Friday mornings at Our Lady of Peace from 9:30-10:45 AM beginning in October. Email Chris Patch at [email protected] to sign up for the class. You will be abundantly blessed! Help spread the word about this amazing opportunity! If you don’t have anyone in this age range please consider praying for the start-up and fruitfulness of the upcoming class in the valley. We appreciate your prayers! St. Cecilia, patron saint of music, pray for us! —Becky Lieb

he annual Music Ministry Appreciation Picnic was held at Walker Park on August 26. The weather cooperated, even though it was H-O-T! We had a great turnout—choir members, cantors, spouses and families attended. All had a wonderful time of fellowship, sharing tons of delicious food, stories and music. We even had a surprise guest! The picnic ended with a great sing-along, led by our own Guitar Trio.

If you are looking for a group to make music, have fun, enjoy fellowship and minister to your parish, come join our Music Ministry! Currently, we are especially in need of men for our Chancel Choir.

Please feel free to talk to any music minister after Mass, or call Bridget at either (724) 266-6565 or (412) 908-2636.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

his famous warning, often attributed to Edmund Burke, has unfortunately been proven true. The threat of a ritualistic social media witch burning usually stops Christians who oppose the New Religion of secularism and progressivism cold in their tracks.

Needless to say, when hundreds of Catholics publicly stand up for their values—you take note. Hundreds broke the mold on the evening of September 21 at the Church of the Epiphany downtown Pittsburgh, during a Mass and march to Planned Parenthood organized by the Pittsburgh chapter of 40 Days for Life.

Dozens of priests and seminarians led the Mass. The assembly was united in a common sense of purpose and heart. It’s all about fighting the good fight, discerning the lines between right and wrong, finding our allies and fighting our enemies.

By the time the Mass had ended and the group proceeded out, an ominous darkness had fallen and a classic Pittsburgh half-hearted rain beat down on the group, the Eucharist proudly hoisted up high.

That’s no ordinary sight on Liberty Avenue.

Whether or not they were aware, the 10-20 police officers who rode beside the candlelit procession served as shepherds of God’s flock that night. The congregation arrived at the Planned Parenthood steps and began a rosary. Priests hoisted the monstrance high, confronting the gates of death—and that’s no dramatization. Last year 3,452 innocent children were killed there. In comparison, 2,977 people were murdered on 9/11.

This march from Epiphany is only a microcosm of a national trend. Texas famously (or infamously, depending on what news outlets you listen to) recently enacted a heartbeat bill: a huge win. Mississippi goes to the Supreme Court—a conservative court—in December to defend a bill that bans abortions over 15 weeks. Additionally, this year states across America together introduced at least 536 pro-life laws and passed a minimum of 89.

Despite the irate voices of those who cannot fathom inhabiting a world without at-will abortions. Nonetheless, the pro-life movement unquestionably has very powerful, good people on its side who are already putting the wheels in motion to remedy the deadly ruling of Roe v. Wade.

ohn, a fallen away Catholic, attended a meeting of America needs Fatima in June of 2001. There, he received a rosary and

began to relearn it. Often, he would say it on his way to work as an investment banker in the south tower of the World Trade Center.

Then came the morning of September 11. John was three blocks away before realizing he had forgotten his rosary at home. He

turned around to go get it. When the plane hit, John fled his office to the stairs. His escape was blocked by a locked fire door. A sense

of calm came over him, and the notion to say the rosary. While all around him was chaos, John was calm. He kept saying the rosary

until firefighters got the door open, and he was able to get out safely.

In our darkest moments, Our Lady is with us.

On a personal level, I feel that she rewards our efforts. When I first started having these Public Square Rosary Rallies, only a handful of

people showed up. Since then, the rallies have grown and I feel that my work for Our Lady has been blessed. In a way, it has expanded

to include Saints John & Paul.—Sheila Shillingburg

love going to the gym on Saturday mornings, often paced and motivated by other women trying to stay physically fit and grow in strength, balance and agility. But my spot at the gym is often empty on one Saturday a month, while striving to grow in spiritual fitness with a different group of women at Saints John & Paul parish: WINGS. These women span the decades from their 20’s to their 80’s, and are from varied walks of life and professions.

I’ve enjoyed this friendly time in a casual setting—warm hospitality and good conversation with both existing friends and new women trying out WINGS. There is time dedicated to a speaker on diverse and relevant topics which so far have included, to name a few: What it was like to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain; Sacred Lettering; The True Presence in the Eucharist; and the Rosary. We also participated in Outdoor Stations together during Lent. Each topic stands alone, so if you can’t come one week, you won’t be behind, but will grow in the time you are there. There is usually time to have some focused discussion in smaller groups about the topics we’ve just heard. And of course we pray together, usually with a song sung for us at the beginning and a prayer together at the end.

We’ve all heard we can realize self-improvement and growth by associating with people we really admire. I feel I have grown stronger in my faith by being in the company of these women of faith and good character who are friendly, kind, welcoming and living in the Lord’s Spirit. I especially love the MIND, BODY, SPIRIT slogan we often hear referenced as to what we need to nurture. So join us at WINGS to nurture your mind with unique information on our Catholic faith; and to grow in the Spirit of the Lord with worship time in a comfortable gathering of women.

...And there’ll be plenty of time to get back to that gym work-out later.—Monica Lovre

Since 1985, the Centers have provided life-affirming pregnancy services to thousands of families in Pittsburgh. They currently serve in Oakland, Monroeville Mall, North Side, and Wexford. Being with my kids among the crowd at the PA March for Life was an incredible experience. Working with Outreach, I can honestly say that our parish is truly Pro-Life and not just Pro-Birth. There are so many life-affirming activities going on that is easy to say October isn’t the only month that our parish celebrates and recognizes all things Pro-Life.

Church cleaners neededOne of the most hidden jobs a person can do in the church is to be a church cleaner. Over the years, we have had a group of dedicated women that would come into the churches during the quiet hours of the morning or later at night when most of us were sleeping. Due to health issues, family issues, or an aging population, we find ourselves without our special angels to help keep the churches spic and span clean. We need your help! If you have a few hours each week that you can join this very important ministry, please contact Michael Deschaine at [email protected]. Michael is hoping to create a team that will help with the Beaver Valley Parishes each week.
