Based on the initiative of Minister of Finance and EconomyNils Schmidt, "Allianz Industrie 4.0 Baden-Württemberg"was launched to fully leverage digitalization opportunitiesand make the German state an Industry 4.0 leader. The al-liance objective is to pool expertise in production technologyand ICT, network all key players, and support small and me-dium-sized industrial enterprises through innovative transferinitiatives as they move towards Industry 4.0.

With its "100 Places for Industry 4.0 in Baden-Württemberg"competition, Allianz Industrie 4.0 Baden-Württemberg looksfor innovative business concepts that have proven effectivefor intelligently networking production and value creationprocesses. The panel of experts assessed the level of innovation along with the concrete, practical relevance forIndustry 4.0.

Minister of Economic Affairs Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut an-nounced the winners of the fourth round of the competitionin November 2016. A total of 17 companies and institutionsthat have successfully implemented Industry 4.0 in theirdaily business operations were selected.

Mosca 4.0 was awarded an honorary certificatein the competition and will be included in the Stateof Baden-Württenberg Competence Atlas. Ourmotto "faster, more versatile, more individual" reflects our belief that Industry 4.0 demands com-munication between machine and product and reciprocal control of components. The trend is towards fully customized products, to a batch sizeof one. This calls for technologies that continuallyadapt to changing conditions.

That's why all machine class III Mosca machinesare already equipped for the future requirementsof Industry 4.0. From manufacturer-independentdata interfaces for horizontal and vertical networ-king and remote access capability for mainten-ance and configuration from any location,

to actual machine-to-machine communication capable ofsupplying the machine with complex formula data and otherinformation – we provide an innovative basis for Industry4.0. The main advantage of these technologies is that a machine works not as a single unit, but as an integratedcomponent within the system. Machine status monitoringenables maintenance and repair processes to be initiatedearly on, minimizing interruptions and downtime.

Mosca 4.0 thus offers a concept that supports Industry 4.0and guarantees advanced processes for customers.

Mosca PP(Polypropylene) and PET (Polyester) straps securegoods for transport in many different industries and applicati-ons: newspapers and other print products, mail-order or logis-tics operations, corrugated cardboard products, foodstuffs, building materials and other massive products, wood or cans. The straps range in width from 5 to 15.5 millimeters and canbe used in all strapping machines, regardless of type or ma-nufacturer. Multiple extrusion lines operate simultaneouslyaround the clock at the plant in Muckental, producing PP, PET,and now also PLA straps in fully automated operations.

PP straps account for around two-thirds of total production.Non-toxic and safe for use with food products, the strapsare manufactured in black or in other colors upon request.Mosca is also flexible in terms of supply quantities for allstrap types. Any requirement can be met, from a single boxto a complete truck or container load. "For the 5-millimeter-wide standard PP strap, one of our most popular products,

a special winding technology enables us to produce a running length of up to 8,000 meters on a single roll – a lotmore than the standard 6,500 meters," explains MoscaGmbH CEO Timo Mosca. "This offers a valuable benefit forour customers, because it not only saves storage space, itgives them longer runtimes with less downtime and lowersetup costs."

„Green“ alternatives

PET straps are most commonly manufactured in the colorgreen and are available in widths ranging from 9.5 to 15.5millimeters. Depending on width, they are capable of hand-ling loads between 180 and 600 kilograms, are stableacross a wide temperature range, and ensure high tensilestrength and elasticity for optimum load securing. MoscaPET straps are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles(bottle flakes). The waste or scrap material generated

The company Mosca GmbH based in Waldbrunn, Germany not only produces top qualitystrapping machines – it also supplies the plastic straps. The company has been producingtear-proof PP and PET strapping materials since 2008 in one of Europe's most advanced facilities in Muckental/Odenwald. Mosca recently started producing straps made from PLA,a biocompatible plastic.

during production is shredded and reincorporated into thesystem. PET straps are equally suitable for ultrasonic orfriction welding. After use, they can be easily reintroducedinto the materials cycle.

PLA straps are now also available in various widths. Theyare made from a biocompatible polylactide plastic producedfrom renewable raw materials, like potato or corn starch, and can be industrially composted after use.Optimized packaging technologies alsoreduce the amount of packagingwaste for customers. For example, strap coils can be stacked onto aEuro-pallet and covered in stretchwrap instead of being packed inboxes. This eliminates the need forabout 40 packaging cartons.

Sustainability from the start

In the construction of its manufactu-ring facility, Mosca harnessed thepotential of the huge flat roof by in-stalling a 2,500 m2 solar energy

system that feeds electricity into the grid. Energy is alsosaved inside the production facility. Hot parts are insulatedfor more energy efficiency and excess heat is used to keepbuildings warm on cold days. "We also return energy frombrake lines to the system in the form of electricity. Someparts of our production facility have units with electronic con-verters," Mosca says. "This means that we not only workwith sustainable materials, but also meet sustainability

standards in our production operations."

RFIDRFID labels:

The future of inventory managementNetwork-compatible machines, remote maintenance, and ERP systems that autonomously reorder consum-ables: The Industry 4.0 concept covers a wide range ofapplications. What they all share is the idea of simplify-ing production and the lives of industrial users. At Mosca,we are committed to not only cutting-edge technologies, but also applications and interfaces that simplify yourproduction operations and are easy and intuitive to use.

The RFID application for strap inventory managementdeveloped by Mosca in cooperation with PSI Automotive& Industry GmbH and the Winckel company focuses onclarity. This application simplifies the storage and reor-dering of strapping materials. RFID labels attached tothe coils contain information about the strapping mate-rial. SoniXs strapping machines equipped with a scannerread the label and register the specific coil being usedin the ERP system. As the coils are used up and your inventory level drops, the system automatically reordersthe required strapping material. You receive an automaticmessage via your ERP system when the strapping ma-terial produced for you leaves our plant in Muckentalthrough an RFID gate. This allows you to track every-thing that goes on from a mobile device via an intuitiveindustrial app – without having to supervise the processyourself.

At Interpack, Stand F36 in Hall 16 is where you can seea live demonstration of consumption and ordering pro-cesses using RFID labels. We simulate this with a strapmaterial warehouse, a strapping machine that scansRFID tags, and multiple digital displays. We will alsohave experts on hand to answer any questions you mayhave.

UCBThe strapping machine for complex

products in different sizes As a cross-strapping machine with aligning station, the UCB of-fers manufacturers of corrugated cardboard products maximumflexibility along with multiple options for optimized strapping.Complex product formats can be stored as a recipe on an intuitive touch panel and accessed again when required. Thecross-strapping machine offers optional network communicationinclusive Remote Monitoring Interface (RMI). This makes it possible to administer and select recipes from a network viaoperator's console.

Unlike fully automated strapping machines, the UCB is operatedmanually. Non-standard products are inserted into the machineby an operator, and then strapped by the machine. The UCBuses side-driven conveyor belts to reliably convey complex pro-ducts, such as four or six-point folding boxes. Corrugated card-board products are locked into place on up to six sides beforebeing strapped with material in widths ranging from 5 to 12 mm.Complex products can be safely and quickly double strapped bytwo parallel double package stops (optional). Manual operationis supported by Automatic Clockspeed Regulation (ATR). Thisfeature matches the strapping rate to the operator's pace andreduces wear on mechanical parts. If the machine is idling, itgoes into standby mode after a set time.

Along with its ability to strap non-standard products, the UCBconvinces with high-quality, efficiency-based features. As a high-end machine, the UCB is equipped with electromechanicalalignment and the Standard 6 precision strap path that has beenproven in thousands of strapping machines. Standard equip-ment includes SoniXs ultrasonic technology.

Look forward to a more detailed report about the UCB in the nextissue!

New entry-level solution:MO-M-8

Our new semi-automatic strapping machine responds to the needs of our customers whowant a lower entry-level machine at an attractive price without sacrificing quality. Based onthe established RO-M Fusion, the MO-M-8 offers reliable operation with high availability. Thecompact machine dispenses with the usual strap guide frame. Instead, the strap is wrappedaround the package manually. This makes the MO-M-8 easy to use and ideal for customerswho need to strap a low number of packages without renouncing efficiency and reliability.

"Our MO-M-8 is especially designed for users who generallydon't need to strap items as often – but rely on high availa-bility when they do," says Christian Zwieb, responsible forproduct management at Mosca GmbH. The robust, semi-automatic strapping machine was developed as a succes-

sor to the MO-M-7 and is based on the RO-M Fusion, thelatest evolution of the established RO-M series. "Manyusers are familiar with the models in the RO-M series as re-liable entry-level machines. Mosca launched the first RO-Mon the market in the 1970s." Wholesalers, distribution cen-ters and logistics services have sworn by these compactunits for decades. Several thousand RO-M Fusion machi-nes have been successfully sold on the market.

In keeping with our modular construction concept, manycore components of the MO-M-8 – including the machineframe, strap dispenser and sealing unit – are constructedin the same way as the RO-M Fusion. But the semi-auto-matic MO-M-8 dispenses with the strap guide frame. Tostrap a product, the operator places the package on the ma-chine and lays the strap on manually. The unit is availablewith an optional table stop to facilitate optimum positioningof the individual packages. Strap retraction, tension adjust-ment and the welding of the strap ends are conducted au-tomatically after the strap is placed in the sealing unit toinitiate the strapping process.

Energy-efficient and low maintenance

The proven standard 3 sealing unit, long reserved for high-performance machines, featured in the RO-M Fusion is atthe heart of the new MO-M-8. Temperature is regulated viaa controller on the heating tounge, and multiple decentrali-zed DC motors replace the central drive in the sealing unit. The direct drive for these functions completely eliminatesthe need for wearing parts, including toothed belts, clutchesand chains. For the user, this means high availability andlow maintenance. An automatic strap in feed on the sealingunit supports coil changing, which is made easy thanks to

Many users are familiar with the models in the RO-M series as reliable entry-level machines. Mosca launched the first RO-M on the market in the 1970s.

the quick-change system. The MO-M-8 is also extremelyenergy efficient with a power consumption of only approx.120 watts.

The machine is controlled via Mosca's proprietary MSCB-1real-time control panel. "Operators can set the strap tensionor required strap length via the potentiometer to optimizethe process for their specific application," Zwieb explains."The soft tension capability makes it easy to strap even de-licate products. The strap feed can also be easily readjustedvia a push button." An illuminated service push button indi-cates the machine's current operating state with colored sig-nals. This means that the operator can see right away if the

heating has not yet reached welding temperature or thesafety circuit is interrupted, and can respond accordingly. The MO-M-8 is suitable for packages that are a minimumof 80 mm wide and 10 mm high. Polypropylene (PP) strapswith a width of five, eight or twelve millimeters may be usedaccording to requirements.

Fully automatic double strap dispenser formaximum efficiency

The controlled frame of the EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6has ten predefined frame sizes ranging from 450x450 mmto 1650x1800 mm capable of processing machine-com-

patible PP, PET and PLAstraps with a width of 5, 6,8, 9, 10 or 12 mm. TheEVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6works with upstream anddownstream conveyor tech-nique as a fully automaticmachine or it can be easilyintegrated into existing lineswith conveyor technique. Apivoting control panelmakes it easy to changeoperating sides in anysetup. If the strap on thecoil is nearly empty, an optional double strap dis-penser picks up the strapon a second coil without interruption. The empty coilcan then be changed without halting production.

SoniXs technology – clean, secure and efficient strap end sealing

Our patented SoniXs ultrasonic technology is another inno-vation in the range of side-seal machines. This unique, highly efficient process is ready for use at all times. Ultra-sonic technology requires no warm-up phase, which savestime and money. The sealing unit only consumes energywhen it is actually needed. Stability at the joints is up to 85%of the tensile strength of the strapping material used.

Core components are standardized with the modular Moscasystem. This helps lower production costs and these savings are passed on to our customers – without com -promising on quality and efficiency. The standardized

Standard 6 strap path can be disassembled without toolsand reassembled just as easily in a few steps, simplifyingmaintenance and cleaning.

Industry 4.0 ready with network functionality

The high-end Pro model also meets the requirements of Industry 4.0. "The EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 is fully network-compatible. We can run diagnoses via online remote maintenance from anywhere. We gladly offer thisservice because it is uncomplicated and convenient for ourcustomers," Zwieb explains. The machine's status can alsobe displayed in just a few clicks using a remote monitoringinterface. Software updates can be accessed via a networkconnection in the same way. EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6goes beyond online functionality. The versatile strappingeditor enables a wide variety of settings from package topackage and allows operators to save different recipes asmachine settings. Data including strap patterns, transportspeed, package handling and strap tension can be storedin the machine as recipes. These factors can be manuallyor automatically assigned to the appropriate package, forexample via network signal, making product handling evenmore efficient.

KZV-111-Combi

The fully automatic strapping machine KZV-111-Combi combi-nes a pallet packing press and stretch wrapping machine in asingle system. Through this combination of stretch wrap spoolto a pallet strapping machine, a longer production line that requires multiple machines gets replaced. The operator positi-ons the securing packages manually by a lift truck in the systemand removes them.

The KZV-111-Combi was specially designed for loadings of lowpallet numbers that need to be weather protected until they arrive at the customer's site.

Pallets can be securely strapped up to four times and then wrap-ped according to different parameters. The SoniXs ultrasonictechnology reliably welds the strap ends. A movable strap lanceensures pallets are optimally strapped between the woodensections. The electrically driven contact plate makes it possibleto strap at different packing heights. The optional floating head distributes strap tension evenlyacross the entire package and ensures reliable stability – a keyadvantage especially for rigid products.

With regard to the products, customers can choose betweenpassage widths of 2,000 mm or 2,400 mm. According to the passage width the turntable is available with a diameter of 1,800 mm or 2,200 mm and thus provides an optimal adaptionto the products. The maximum load of the turntable is 3,000 kg.

In dependence on several product and strapping parameters, the KZV-111-Combi double straps and stretches up to 40 palletsper hour.
