Dear Friends,

The events of last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginiaexpose a dangerous current of hate in our country. For along while now the “other” is seen as an enemy. This isevident from the White Supremacists to the halls ofgovernment. If you are not on my side, goes the mantra, you are evil. As a friend posted on FB in a satirical post,“To the extreme right and the extreme left (or the extremeup and the extreme down, or the extreme center: all of usthat come to entertain the idea that ideas are morevaluable than persons): "We should therefore claim, in thename of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.”-Karl Popper.

Herman Cain (also posted on Facebook) posted: “If yousaw much of the footage from yesterday, you probablysaw some of the counter protesters holding up signs thatsay "Hate has no home here." That seems like a worthysentiment. But there's more to it than meets the eye…They want you to know that they are virtuous people whodo not hate.

Well. That's a relief. No one should hate. But there's alsoan implication in the sign, which is that people who dohate are all over the place, and that the owner of the signdisapproves of these haters…While the sign presumes tosay something about you, it's really you saying somethingabout other people. It's you presuming to assert your ownmoral superiority by pointing your finger at others youdeem to be haters, and then letting everyone else knowthat you are more virtuous than them. "See those haters?I am not like those people. I am better than them."

Everyone involved in yesterday's violence had this incommon, (…) they were mad at someone else, or blamedsomeone else for their problems, or ascribed evil motivesto someone else. And everyone who showed upyesterday was looking for a fight. This has become alynchpin of both our political and social culture.

This is utter madness, and it's a direct result of ourculture's rejection of God.

God's love as taught to us by Jesus Christ doesn't requireus all to agree with each other, but it does require us tolove each other as human beings rather than assumingthat because you disagree you must be evil or a hater. It'sso obvious that you shouldn't hate another personbecause of what they look like; it shouldn't even need tobe said. That's what makes these white supremacists somind-bogglingly repulsive. But you also shouldn't runaround calling other people bigoted or sexist or whateverelse because you are convinced of certain things, andthey are not convinced.

This is what happens when society rejects God, andthinks it can figure out on its own how love should work. You can't do that. Continues on next column

From the Pastor’s Desk

Continuation of Fr. Lee’s letter

You start making your own rules and, pretty soon, you're going to war against people who made otherrules that are different from your own. Charlottesvilleis a direct result of this. Until we turn back to God,we're going to get a lot more of this, and it's going toget a lot worse.”

The answer to all the injustice of the world is JesusChrist Crucified. He died because of all this injusticeand sin to heal it by His Blood. Mercy is the first word;on me and on you. Only united to Him, in His Crosswill there be a change. Fr. Lee

Queridos amigos,
