mothers’ day assembly 2017 - northlands primary …northlandsprimary.co.za/newsletters/17th may...

FROM THE DESK OF THE ACTING PRINCIPAL
STAFF NEWS:
Mrs Coetzee will be going on accouchement leave from the 26th
May 2017. Miss Laurie will take charge of Mrs Coetzee’s class. We
wish Mrs Coetzee well during her leave. Hopefully all goes well
during her period of accouchement leave.
MOTHERS’ DAY:
Thank you
to the 490 Moms and Grandmas who were present for the Mothers’ Day
celebration.
For your warm response to and applause for the learners who entertained
you.
For visiting the children in the classroom to collect your Mothers’ Day item
and to share in the classroom activities.
For the many messages of appreciation and thanks in support of the day.
I acknowledge the staff and learners for their combined efforts in making this event
a great success.
JP SPEECH AND DRAMA FESTIVAL:
It is most encouraging to see our JP learners expressing themselves in such a
confident manner in front of the Speech and Drama adjudicator. The learners
must be complimented on their efforts in the class choral verse and individual
items. Information will be sent home regarding the JP cultural presentation taking
place soon.
MUFFINS FOR MOMS:
The Grade Ones had an overwhelming response for their “Muffins for Mom’s”
morning. Each class had projects set out for Moms and children to create
together. The learners loved working with their parents in the classroom. My
thanks go to the Grade One educators and the parents for attending this fun-filled
event.
APPEARANCE:
I acknowledge that many families ensure that their children are well-groomed and
neatly presented for school on a daily basis. Clean uniform which includes
polished shoes is essential to maintain the high standards of appearance that the
school upholds.
Haircuts and hair styles must be monitored. There can be no confusion regarding
our request for short back, sides and top haircuts. These standards need to be
practised right down to Grad R so that these young learners start their preparation
for their entrance to main school.
DRESS FOR SPORT:
The standard code for Northlands is as follows:
Practice: Rugby/netball sports uniform Grade 3 to Grade 7 to change back into
school uniform or full school tracksuit with school/running shoes.
Matches: Learners to arrive and depart from fixtures (at home and away) wearing
tracksuit top. The top is not to be worn over the shoulder or carried by the parent.
Please ensure that this request is monitored on a daily basis.
CONQUESTA OLYMPIAD:
Entries for the Olympiad are now being accepted. The subjects offered are:
Grade1 to Grade 3: English and Numeracy
Grade 4 to Grade 7: English, Mathematics and General Knowledge
Mrs M Brown is in charge of the JP entries and Mrs S Gow will accept all SP entries
for this Olympiad.
REMEMBER: “It always seems impossible until it is done.”

MOTHERS’ DAY CELEBRATIONS:
We would like to thank our Mothers for attending our Mothers’ Day
Celebrations.
The Grade 1 classes had a record turn-out of Moms for their Muffin
Morning. The learners loved sharing the experience with their
precious Moms. Thank you Mrs Rall and your team of dedicated
teachers.
The Grade 2 to Grade 7 learners thoroughly enjoyed spoiling their mothers in the
classroom.
To Mrs du Plessis, thank you for the beautiful presentations.
Solo singer Loyiso Msomi, choir, Mr Buxton and Miss Moore. We have such talent in
this school. Miss Ross for her displays of beautiful art and the choral verse from Mrs
Brown’s Grade 3’s and Mrs Beuster’s Grade 2’s.
Thank you to Luke Lovemore from “The Voice” for making time to be with us. We
welcome our Pre-Primary Moms on Wednesday, 17th May at 17h30.
PRE-PRIMARY FETE:
This event takes place on Saturday, 20th May at 10h00. A huge amount of effort
goes into making this special morning a success. Please bring your family to enjoy
a fun-filled morning with us.

JUNIOR PRIMARY
I hope all the Moms were thoroughly spoilt on Mothers’ Day. Thank you
to the many Moms who came to the Grade 1’s ‘Muffins for Moms’ and
those who came to the assembly on Friday morning. I hope you
enjoyed the entertainment and visiting your children.
We are busy with the Speech and Drama festival and are very happy with how it is
going. Please remember that you have the opportunity to hear the choral verses
and some individual items next week, Wednesday. Grade 1 will be at 08:00, Grade
2 at 09:00 and Grade 3 at 10:30. The choir will sing at the Grade 3 part of the
morning. A letter in this regard will come home shortly. Please return the reply slip
promptly. Thank you.
Please support the Pre-School fete this Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00. It is always
great fun for the children. There will be things to do and things to buy!
I came across this quote and thought I would share it with you. Please read it
carefully, it has much value:
‘When a child reads a novel, he has to self-create whole scenarios, he has to
create images of who these people are, what their emotions are, what their tones
of voice are, what the environment looks like, what the feeling of the environment
is. These self-created scenarios are important, and television leaves no room for the
creative process.’ Jane Healy, Endangered Minds
Reading is a skill that has to be learnt and practised. At the beginning, it can be
hard but perseverance is essential for the child to develop his reading ability.
Good readers enjoy reading. Your child will not become a good reader by
watching television. Please limit screen time and increase reading time, including
where you read to your child!
Have a great week.
Mrs M Brown
ACADEMIC SUPPORT PILLAR
A huge thank you to all those parents and
teachers who attended the ‘Muddles and
Meltdown’ workshop last Tuesday. We
were highly impressed by the amazing
turnout. We hope that you left feeling
empowered and had a greater understanding of why our
children behave in ways we sometimes struggle to
comprehend.
As one Mom to another, I hope you were made to feel
very special on Mother’s Day, and had a little reminder of
how special you are to your children and family. The
pressures are often overwhelming and whilst we try to just
keep our heads above water, we often forget the most basic needs of our
children. So many of them just need to feel that they are heard, loved, and seen.
I sometimes find myself getting frustrated when I get asked to watch the same trick
for the tenth time. I need to remind myself how lucky I am that they still do want
me to “Look”.
Mrs C Fuller
ACADEMIC REPORT
This has been a very disruptive term up until now. It has been a challenge for all of
us to get back into a structured routine! Well, the time has come to put the holiday
vibes on hold for a while, and focus on getting ready for the mid-year exams which
are not too far away.
In fact, the mid-year exams for the senior primary school start in 3 weeks’ time!
Please help your child to plan a study programme well in advance.
Children have different ways of learning, which are roughly grouped into three
basic styles, viz auditory, visual and kinesthetic. When parents know their child's best
way to learn, they can help their child more effectively.
Auditory Learners learn through listening to what others have to say and talking
about what they’re learning.
Auditory Learners:
remember information by talking aloud
need to have things explained orally
talk to themselves while learning something new
For learning to make sense, visual learners need to be able to see, visualise and
illustrate their knowledge skills and concepts. Telling these learners how to do
something may not make sense to them at all.
Visual learners:
remember visual details
prefer to see what they are learning
doodle while listening
like to write down instructions or see them demonstrated.
Kinesthetic Learners like to be actively involved in the learning process, and learn
best through hands-on activities and movement. They tend to be more active
while they are learning, as visual or auditory learning styles just don’t work for
them.
Kinesthetic learners:
want to actually do whatever is being talked about or learned
like to move around while listening or talking
often “talk” with their hands
like to touch things in order to learn about them
remember events by recalling who did what rather than who said what.

CULTURAL PILLAR
Last Friday, we thoroughly enjoyed the special Mother’s Day
assembly presented to our Mothers and Grandmothers in the
Barbara Franken Hall. We were treated to beautiful singing by Loyiso Msomi and
the Senior Primary Choir. Thank you Mrs du Plessis for all your hard work and
preparation.
We also enjoyed two choral verses by Grade 2B and Grade 3B.
Thank you to Miss Moore for your incredible singing of “I Dreamed a Dream” from
Les Miserables. Thank you to Miss Ross for all the beautiful artwork and décor that
helped make the day special.
The final surprise of the morning was old boy, and a
contestant on The Voice SA, Luke Lovemore.
