Whether you have 1 or 10,000 acres, discover the solutions that are right for you at the North-lands Farm & Ranch Show taking place at the Edmonton EXPO Centre from March 29 – 31, 2012.

Serving the Western Canadian agri-cultural community for more than 40 years, the Northlands Farm & Ranch Show will bring industry together to share ideas, conduct business and create educational opportunities. This year’s show will feature innovative farm and ranch equipment, and global positioning systems and environmental technologies. Farmers and ranchers will experience more than 400 agriculture exhibits from across Canada, cutting edge industry seminars and the Northlands Performance Horse Sale presented by the Alberta Ford Deal-ers and Masterfeeds. Guests at this year’s speakers’ series will hear industry expert presentations focusing on production improvement.

For beef enthusiasts, there will be live cattle handling demos, the Summit 3 Speckle Park sale and this year’s feature breed will be the Hereford. This year, Northlands has teamed up with the Quality Starts Here Verified Beef Production

Business of BeefLarry ThomasNational manager CBa Beef InfoXchange system (BIXs) Larry Thomas leads a team of staff and industry stakehold-ers on the development and implementation of the Beef InfoXchange System which is an integral component of the Canadian Beef Advantage. Communication to the industry on the value and opportunities the system will provide is a key responsibility.

EILEEN LEsLIEon Farm Food safetyThe Canadian beef indus-try developed the national on-farm food safety program called Verified Beef Produc-tion™. In Alberta, the national program is delivered through Alberta Beef Quality Starts Here.Alberta Beef Quality Starts Here is a not for profit organi-zation comprised of industry stakeholders dedicated to pro-tecting Alberta’s reputation for producing quality beef. Our goals are straightforward:

CharLIE GraCEy Charlie Gracey is a livestock industry consultant and former Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Asso-ciation. With expertise in the cattle industry and interna-tional trade, Gracey has been a key resource for the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, the Canadian Livestock Identi-fication Agency and the Cana-dian Beef Grading Agency.

(VBP) Program – a voluntary, posi-tive and proactive on-farm program that addresses food safety issues. Eileen Leslie, the Alberta Provincial Coordinator for the VBP program will facilitate workshops for beef producers across Alberta. She will discuss how the program can provide support to beef producers involved in the VBP program.

If equine is more your scene, this year’s feature breed is the Arabian Horse. There will also be daily semi-

nars on equine biosecurity to teach participants on assessing the risks and developing biosecurity procedures. In addition, Northlands and Martin Deerline are proud to present horse-man Doug Mills. Mills will be on site to demonstrate training techniques through his “Train Thru Trust” program.

The 2012 edition of the Northlands Farm & Ranch Show will showcase all the tools of the trade for doing business - all while serving as a catalyst for the positive evolution of the agriculture industry.

Similar to last year’s show – the 522,000 square foot Edmonton EXPO Centre will turn six exhibit halls into all things agriculture.

Guy TomLINsoN making the World a Greener PlaceEnvirotechGuy Tomlinson is the Chief Operating Officer for Little Dipper Oil Recycling and has been with the company since 2007 and will speak about how you can profit from Being Green! Not only is reprocess-ing used oil materials great for the environment, with Little Dipper Holdings’ complete recycling services you can get paid for the used oil, filters and plastics you normally just dispose of. You don’t profit from sending your oil materi-als to hazardous waste station. Instead we repurpose it into other construction and manu-facturing materials – and pay you for your used oil, filters and plastics.

JIm hoLE dispelling Garden mythsFarmscapingDo water droplets magnify sunlight and burn plants? Will adding rocks to the base of a pot improve water drain-age? Garden myths can often lead you astray. Jim Hole will separate fact from fiction as he debunks myths that have plagued gardeners for years. Hole lives in Edmonton, Al-berta and works at his family’s state-of-the-art lifestyle facility, the Enjoy Centre - a com-munity of partners including a garden centre, restaurant, fresh market, greenhouse and even an events space. Explain-ing what makes plants tick is Hole’s specialty, and he does it without ever losing sight of the beauty and wonder that make gardening enjoyable. In addition to writing bestsell-ing books and newspaper columns, Hole can be heard regularly on CBC radio.

KErrI BuKsa Creating an outdoor oasisFarmscapingThe goal of rural landscape design is based on several guiding principles different from urban design. Rural de-sign is based on the practical requirements of screening or framing views, creating wind and sound barriers and manag-ing buffers between residential living and a working yard.

NorthlaNds aNd Martin Deerline are thrilled to pres-ent accomplished horseman Doug Mills to the Northlands Farm & Ranch Show taking place from March 29 - 31 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre. Mills brings a wealth of knowl-edge and skill accrued over a lifetime of horsemanship.

Mills was born and raised on a working cattle ranch in Price, Utah. This lifestyle gave him the opportunity to observe horses and their instincts in their natural environ-ment – a key element in Mills’s ability to read and commu-nicate with horses. After more than a decade of teaching horses and riders in workshops and one on one sessions in Canada, United States and Europe, Mills has numerous

futurity wins, international and national championships. Mills also has gold medals in reining, working cow horse, rodeo, western pleasure, western riding, trail, showman-ship, hunter under saddle, jumping, pleasure driving and dressage. His unique ability as a speaker allows him to present an exciting, educational, and inspiring program to audiences. With a calm and easy approach, Mills teaches practical horsemanship skills that everyone can take home and put to immediate use using his interactions with the horse to emphasize the most fundamental lesson; allowing the horse to make choices.

verified Beef Produc-tioN (VBP) is Canada’s verified On-Farm Food Safety Program for beef – a dynamic program to uphold consumer confidence in the products of Canada’s beef producers. This is the final year of the Growing For-ward On-Farm Food Safety Producer funding to assist beef producers in imple-menting the VBP program on their farm or ranch, which includes improv-ing their livestock handling equipment. Newly designed livestock handling equip-ment reduces animal trauma and greatly improves the ability to administer animal health treatments. It mini-mizes livestock injury while maximizing handler safety and efficiency.

On-farm food safety stan-dards for beef production are based on ensuring drug withdrawals are being met and that there are no foreign objects (ie: broken needles) in the animal. Improved squeeze chutes that permit safe and stress free neck injections are the preferred method for administering drugs and help maintain the high quality of beef that Canadian beef producers are known for.

FiNd ouT hoW AT ThE NoRThlANdS FARM & RANch ShoW NorthlaNds is dedicated to bringing top clinicians and seminars to its agriculture events. To support this commit-ment, Northlands is proud to have The Alberta Equestrian Federation (AEF) hosting biosecurity sessions at the 2012 edition of the Northlands Farm & Ranch Show being held at the Edmonton EXPO Centre from March 29-31.

Many equine diseases are highly transmittable. Therefore horse owners’ actions, or lack thereof, can have far reaching impacts. These sessions provide information on how you can prevent occurrence, reoccurrence and transmission by understanding and practicing biosecurity everyday and ev-erywhere you travel with your animals. Biosecurity protects animals, families, communities and the equine industry.

The sessions are intended for horse owners, stable own-ers and riders, show officials, facility operators and anyone interested in learning about horse care. Veterinarian led sessions guide participants in assessing risks and develop-ing biosecurity procedures.

This is also an opportunity for horse owners and caregiv-ers to come together and learn from one another.

To register for a session, please visit albertaequestrian.com/biosecurity or email [email protected]. Each participant will receive a biosecurity guide and a mobile biosecurity kit.

Older model squeeze chutes were not designed for neck injections. There-fore, updated systems have neck extenders or double head gates which reduce head movement and pro-vide access to the neck. This enhanced restraint of the animal being treated practically eliminates the chances of broken needles. In addition, improved livestock handling systems makes it easier to give cattle

multiple dosages with prop-er administration especially for subcutaneous (sub-Q) injections.

Improved livestock handling equipment have a number of benefits to both the animal and the producer. Weigh scales, for example, can be a valuable addition to squeeze chutes. They accurately measure the weight of the animal, thus exact dosages of ani-mal health products can be

determined, which then as-sures drug withdrawal times can be maintained with confidence.

To be eligible for fund-ing, beef producers must go through a VBP training program either by complet-ing an in-person or online workshop. Eileen Leslie, provincial coordinator for the VBP program will be on hand to offer information and assistance to producers during the Northlands Farm & Ranch Show from March 29-31, 2012 at the Edmonton EXPO Centre. Completing training is the first step to im-proving on-farm food safety on your farm or ranch.

This voluntary industry program is owned by the Canadian Cattleman’s As-sociation and recognized by the Canadian Food Inspec-tion Agency as a sound food safety program.

takiNg Place at the Edmonton EXPO Centre from March 29 – 31, 2012, this year’s edition of the North-lands Farm & Ranch Show will showcase all the tools of the trade for doing business from brushes to blankets to barns - all while serving as a catalyst for the positive evolution of the agriculture industry.

There’s plenty for equine enthusiasts to see and do at this year’s show. Many exhibi-tors will feature products and services targeted specifically to horse owners. There are also clinics and presentations geared to the equine commu-nity to benefit not only the owners but their horses as well. This year is no excep-tion and the highlight of the Farm & Ranch Show con-tinues to be the Northlands Performance Horse Sale pre-sented by the Alberta Ford Dealers and Masterfeeds.

In its fifth year, the North-lands Performance Horse Sale will feature ranch horses, arena horses and prospects. Buyers and sellers come from throughout western Canada to participate in the sale which will take place on Saturday, March 31 with a preview on Friday, March 30. The horses are on display throughout the event so pro-spective buyers have ample opportunity to meet one-on-one with the consigners and really get an understanding of the capability of the horse they are interested in buying.

The Northlands Perfor-mance Horse Sale is a presti-gious event where the sale is limited to 20 horses, and as such, Northlands has a selec-tion process to help ensure the best quality horses are offered by reputable breed-

ers and trainers. “As one of the first spring

sales, traditionally this sale has been well attended and is considered a price setter for the industry,” said David Fiddler, Show Manager, Farm & Ranch Show. “Each year the quality of horses improves; we are very pleased with the support being given to this event by

the industry.”In 2011, the sale average

was $4,053 and the high selling horse was a five year old gelding consigned by Z Bar Performance Quarter Horses sold for $6,800.

Consignors have the opportunity to demon-strate their horses with cattle. There are timed event chutes in place for

demonstrating competitive rope horses, and there are barrels and good ground for demonstrating speed horses. Since the event is held in conjunction with the Canadian National College Finals Rodeo presented by Martin Deerline, it is a great place for consignors to pro-mote rodeo event horses as well as ranch horses.
