Pietro Piccoli
Born in 1954 in the small Italian town of Montopoli di Sabina, Pietro Piccoli followed his artistic passion by attending Latina’s high school for the arts at the age of 16. By age 20, Piccoli went to Rome, an exciting place full
of artistic potential.
In the early 70Rome was a hotbed of new ideas and on the cutting edge of the international art scene. He immersed himself in his surroundings, finding inspiration in the innovative concepts of the many artists whose studios he frequented and to whom he apprenticed himself. Moreover, for a year or so, he traveled in northern Italy and also Paris and Zurich,
which greatly influenced his artistic perspective.
The 80’s comprised a second period of active experimentation in Pic-coli’s career. He investigated new mediums and sought new ways of
weaving together major strands of his style: realism and abstraction,

visual detail and imagination. Variously, he tried impressionism, expres-sionism, and fauvism. Within ten years, he had found a definite direc-tion toward the synthesis he was seeking. His colors became brighter, his brushwork more free. Soon he began adding patches of pure abstrac-tion as a sort of “out-of -focus” overlay in front of the pure landscape. These patches serve as a visual relief from the strongly geometric archi-tectural forms. In his most recent works, the subject matter has become
incorporated into the abstraction.
His work recalls that of “the Mediterranean World,” which utilizes the light and bright color to capture the essence of the land and sea. His dramat-ic use of these two elements creates vivifying, energetic compositions which impel the viewer to become entranced by the play of real and
abstraction, of curvature and geometry, of light and color.
