Editors Letter

Our 1st Issue has finally made it to print! It has been a bit of a chal-lenging process and I would not have been able to do it without the help of my dad, Therrol Schwartz.

I would just like to take this op-portunity to thank all involved in making this happen. I believe we have a good concept and will only grow stronger in time.

We have some exciting events coming up in the next couple of months in the Eastern Cape and I personally can’t wait to go to them and cover them too.

We also have some nice ideas planned for the future in regard to feature articles. So watch this space!

I hope you the reader enjoy every bit of our new magazine.

Dunlop Historic Tour

Wet conditions greeted an im-pressive field of compeitors on the 18th of April for the East London leg of the Dunlop Historic Tour.

Some eye catching cars like the Mustang of Glen Uitenbogaartd and

the Cobra of Mike Forsyth braved the trechourous conditions

Heat 1 started out wet and Forsyth was an early casualty as he spun

his cobra in the sweep on lap 1. He would be the 1st of many to make

mistakes though in the difficult conditions.

Uitenbogaartd also made a mistake

early on running wide in his Mus-tang, but managed to keep posistion

in the front of the field.

In the End Uitenbogaartd took the victory in Heat 1 followed closely by

Chris Landman who finished 2nd in Class A. Ian Thompson Finished

3rd on the track, but was 1st in Class S. Class B saw Danian Staffen Narrowly fend off Rane Berry and

Chris Radloff in a tight battle to the flag, Radloff unfortunately broke a gearbox in the proccess which

would sideline him from the action for the remainder of the day.

In the 2nd Heat the conditions were considerably better than in the 1st.

This made life a lot easier for the big V8s and they would be going all out to make the most of their superior

power advantage.

In the early stages, Mike Forsyth was the man on the move in his co-bra as he hunted down the Mustang

of Uitenbogaartd.

Danian Staffen was hassling the Nissan Skyline of Rane Berry as

Forsyth moved into the lead of the race. The V8 Opel Rekord of Ian

Thompson was having to fight hard to hold off Chris Landman’s bright

Red Ford Escort. Then the V8 Chev

Deville of Danie De Lange joined the Fight between Berry and Staffen

making it a 3 way fight.

At the end of the Heat Forsyth man-aged to take 1st place followed by Uitenbogaartd in 2nd. Thompson followed in 3rd with Chris Land-

man in 4th.

Brendon Smith Fought off Jason Greyling to 5th place with Danie

De Lange, Rane Berry, Gary Schultz and Danian Staffen rounding out

the top 10.

The next event to be held at the East London Grand Prix Circuit will be

on the 6th of June. (Fun day)

Border Karting Round 3 - 2 May 2015Article: Jethro SchwartzPhotos: Trevor Kitching

Saturday 2nd of May 2015 saw the eagerly anticipated round 3 of the

Border Karting Championship take place on the Historic East London

Grand Prix Circuit. The event would once again boast a strong local com-petitor contingent and also attracted drivers from the neighboring Algoa

Kart Club in Port Elizabeth.

The weather conditions seemed a little adrift from being perfect in the morning, but would heat up as the day progressed and so did the days

racing action.

In the 50cc Cadet class Kaylim Padayache (Nate’s Car Sales) was the

surprise of the day, by dominating

proceedings and taking his 1st ever heat win and he followed this up

with a clean sweep of victories in all 3 heats giving him a well-deserved 1st overall. Young Jordan van der Merwe (Mag Lab KME Racing) who had won all 6 heats of the

championship going into this round had to settle for two 2nd place

finishes and a 3rd place finish when Bridgette Jackson (Jackson Racing)

representing the ladies of Border Karting, beat him to the flag in heat

2. Bridgette managed to finish in 3rd for the remaining heats ahead of Cayden Randall in a solid 4th

overall.

Kenzo Barnard (Mag Lab KME Racing) from Port Elizabeth had

one thing in mind when he arrived at the track on Saturday morning,

which was to come to East London and dominate proceedings. He did very well winning 2 of the 3 heats, but a solid performance from Mat-thew Rowe (RPM) prevented him

from taking the clean sweep. Rowe’s win in heat 3 helped him to seal

off 2nd overall for the day ahead of Sebastian Smith (C&G Bodyworks) in 3rd, while Port Elizabeth’s Kiesha

Potgieter (Energy) had a slightly quieter day to finish in 4th overall.

The Clubman’s C Class saw Chris Peters once again take the honors in his flying 100cc Super Kart ahead of Cuan Flusk and Tristan Wantenaar.

It was a tight affair in the Clubman’s B class with 1 point between 1st,

2nd and 3rd places at the end of the day. Ashton Nell ended up on the

top step of the podium, with another fine victory for the ladies of Border Karting, for the 1st time this season as she managed to work her way to the front ahead of Jared De Kock

(Big Joe Racing). Jeff Hall managed

a solid 3rd place in his 1st race back in a kart after a long break where he has been driving a lotus on the main circuit. Bobby Jones would finish in

4th overall on the day.

The highly competitive Clubman’s A class saw an impressive turnout on the day. Round 1 winner Shan-non Jackson (Jackson Racing) was back, while round 2 winner Jethro Schwartz (Black Betty Motorsport) was determined to make up more lost ground in the championship standings. The pace in this class

was extremely quick on the day and the qualifying times were not far

off of lap record pace. In the end it was Geoff Stephens (Mag Lab KME Racing) who managed to take all 3 victories on the day, becoming the

3rd driver in 3 rounds to pull off this feat. The battle for 2nd was a tight 1 and Shannon Jackson managed to

get ahead of the boys and claim her spot on the podium. Blake Kirsten made a late challenge in the final

heat to beat Jethro Schwartz to 3rd Overall. Following Schwartz to the flag was Cameron Kelly (Monster Energy) in 5th and Brent Strydom

(C&G Bodyworks) in 6th.

The Super Rok Class saw Richard Clarke (RPM) take victory on the

day ahead of a hard charging Shaun Gradwell (Mag Lab KME Racing).

The battle for 3rd was a tight one as

Page 6: Motorsport EC | June 2015 | Issue 1

Craig Borges (Big Joe Racing) man-aged to narrowly fend off Bradley Rowe (RPM) for the final podium honors. Grant Godfrey (RPM) fin-

ished 5th with Shaun Vallance (Mag Lab KME Racing) having a disas-

trous day after suffering mechanical failures in 2 of the 3 heats to finish

up in 6th overall.

The final class of the day was the Rotax DD2 gearbox karts. Geoff Stephen (Mag Lab KME Racing) was once again in fine form tak-

ing the overall victory for the day ahead of team mate Shaun Gradwell (Mag Lab KME Racing). Had it not been for a steering failure in Heat

1, Gradwell might have been a solid contender for the overall victory, with 2 wins from the remaining

2 heats. 3rd overall went to Craig Borges (Big Joe Racing) who per-formed well on the day. 4th went

to Shaun Vallance (Mag Lab KME Racing) with the spectacular Andre

Botha (Mag Lab KME Racing) in 5th overall.

Junior driver of the day went to Kaylim Padayache (Nate’s Car Sales) after a great performance. Shannon Jackson (Jackson racing) took the

senior driver of the day trophy with a great comeback performance.

While Shaun Gradwell (Mag Lab KME Racing) took the farmer of the

day accolade after his spectacular steering malfunction in the DD2

heat 1.

The Next Round of the Border Kart-ing Championship will be held on

the 13th of June.

Round 3 of the South African National Supadrift Series was held at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria

North. The Eastern Capes’ only representative in the champion-ship in none other than that of reigning champion Wade van

Zummeren. After having a some-what quiet start to the series, the East Londoner went to the event,

hoping to claw back some lost ground.

It was the perfect start to the weekend for Wade in his Border

Towing Skyline, when he snatched up pole position and headed into

the elimination rounds.

In the Top 16 Round, Wade would face off against 16th place qual-ifier, Mathys Naude of JHB in a

BMW E36. It is always a daunting task being paired up with a pre-

cision driver like van Zummeren, and Naude, a seasoned competi-

tor, would find out just how much pressure the champion could ap-ply. A mistake which saw Naude spin would make Wade’s passage

into the Great 8 an easy one.

In the Great 8 Wade had an easy path through when Zanil Satar had to retire with mechanical

difficulties. This would take Wade into the Semi Finals where he

would be paired up with an old foe, in 2013 Supadrift Champion Jason

Webb. Webb seems to not have luck on his side this season as he

too crashed out of the competition with mechanical difficulties once

again this season. This however did once again give Wade an easy stroll in to the final where he would face

off against the series owner, Jim McFarlane.

This is where things would get interesting, and so it should be

as we would not expect anything other from an event final. After

a close run, with van Zummeren looking rather strong, the judges called a false start and sent the

pair back to the start line. After a cracking battle, the judges decided they could not pick a winner and

called an OMT – One More Time. Some fantastic driving was seen in the final battle, with Wade putting

up some major pressure in the

chase run, and McFarlane having to pull out every trick in the book

to hang onto the lightning fast Border Towing Skyline. It was not to be however for van Zummeren

as McFarlane was handed the Victory.

A solid 2nd Place at the event though meant that Wade would

once again move up the standings after he was forced to withdraw from round 1 of the series with mechanical problems. Wade is

now up to 8th in the champion-ship, and gaining ground on the

leaders every step of the way.

Round 4 of the championship will be held at Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone on the 22nd and 23rd of May with Round 5 being held at the Rock Raceway in Brakpan

on the 24th – 26th of July.

Saturday 9 May saw anoth-er Round of the Algoa Kart Club Championship take

place at the Celso Scriban-te circuit in Port Elizabeth. Once again a strong East

London contingent of drivers supported the local Port Eliz-

abeth drivers.

In the 50cc Cadet class, East London’s Bridgette Jackson (Jackson Racing) managed

to work her way onto the podium in 3rd place.

The 60cc Juniors saw Ken-zo Barnard (Mag Lab KME

Racing) taking another well-earned 1st place ahead of

Kiesha Potgieter (Energy) in

2nd place and Matthew Rowe (RPM) rounding out the po-dium in 3rd. Sebastian Smith (C&G Bodyworks) managed a solid 4th overall as he came to grips with the Port Eliza-

beth circuit.

Clubman’s B saw Johan Stander take the victory ahead of Cameron Kelly (Monster Energy), While

clubman’s Class C saw Arno Seyfert dominate proceed-ings to finish ahead of Sha-beer Fredricks in 2nd and

Craig Loenen in 3rd.

Clubman’s class X saw the lady from East London Shan-non Jackson (Jackson Rac-ing) once again rise to the

top as she fended off Geoff Stephen. (Mag Lab KME Rac-ing) The two would actually

finish the day level on points, but Jackson would take

home the 1st place trophy with more wins than Stephen

on the day. Juan Meyer of Port Elizabeth managed to

keep ahead of Neil Stephen for 3rd and 4th overall respec-

tively.

In the Super Rok class Bryce High proved consistency was

the order of the day as he took the overall victory for

the day. East London’s Craig Borges had an eventful day to say the least to finish 2nd

overall. Borges raced almost the entire 2nd heat with 1

hand on the steering wheel and the other on his fuel tank

Another Round of the Victory Raceway dirt oval club championship

was held recently at the circuit in Walmer Port Elizabeth. The racing on the night was as fierce as ever as com-petitors faced off against each other.

The Beginners class saw Zandri Weitz take the top honors ahead of Letitia Renison in 2nd and Bianca Nell in

3rd.

The hotly contested 1660 Class was won by Christo van Staden, with

Ruan Mostert taking 2nd place and Kean Barnard in 3rd.

Petrie Greef Managed to take the victory in the Junior Hot Rods class ahead of Laurika van Tonder in 2nd

and Damon Miles in 3rd.The 2.1 class is always an extremely action packed class, and it was East

London’s Jody van Zummeren who managed to take the honor of victory on the night. Pieta Victor finished in 2nd place with Steph van Niekerk in

3rd.

The Hot Rod class saw Quentin Ellard take 1st position ahead of Neville

Ellard Snr in 2nd.

Abri Pienaar managed to take victory in the Super 6 class ahead of Jan van

Tonder in 2nd and Barrie Conradie in 3rd place,

The American Saloons which are al-ways a crowd favorite saw Pieta Victor

climb to the top step of the podium ahead of Jonny Weitz in 2nd and Nev-

ille Ellard Jnr in 3rd place. The Next event will be held on the 6th of June and will be a club race. Gates open at 3pm with racing starting at 6pm. Gate entry will be Adults R50

after the fuel cap came adrift. He would unfortunately not be able to start the last heat though due to a blown en-

gine. Roxan Reider managed a solid 3rd overall for the day to take up the final podium

spot.

The DD2 Gearbox class saw Geoff Stephen (Mag Lab KME Racing) once again take the overall victory on the day ahead of Shaun Gradwell

(Mag Lab KME Racing). Craig Borges fought hard for the fi-nal podium spot and finished

ahead of Shaun Vallance (Mag Lab KME Racing) Andre Botha (Mag Lab KME Racing) and Trevor Song Rounded

out the top 6 positions.

Motorsport has always been a passion of mine, it’s been some-

thing I have grown up around. My dad, and uncles were stock car

drivers, and some of my earliest memories are either from the race track, or from watching the likes of Schumacher, Senna or Hill taking their cars to the limit on the TV.

My first chance at being really physically involved in motorsport though came through karting. The first experience was sitting on my brother’s lap at the old indoor go karts and I have to say that from that very moment I was hooked

and would never turn back. I was way too small to reach the pedals at that point though and it would

Why Karting?Article: Jethro SchwartzPhotos: Trevor Kitching

be quite a while before I’d get my chance at driving, but that didn’t

mean I wasn’t involved in the sport.

My brother soon after the indoor karting experience had also de-

cided that karting was something he wanted to do. Together with

my father, a suitable kart was sourced and my brothers racing

career would begin, and with it so did mine. You see, even though I wasn’t racing, I was part of our “team” I gained so much experi-ence and learned so many things from the sidelines, passing tools

when they were needed.

Karting has always and will always be a family sport. It is so much

more than just racing. It’s evident

at any race day you will attend. There are very few karter’s who

come to the track alone. The ages of drivers range from 4 years old

to in some case 60 to 70 year olds. The drivers are almost always

accompanied by fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, girl-friends or boyfriends and a whole

host of other supporters.

In my years of racing experience I have seen some mothers taking over the role of head mechanic

when it’s been required of them, wives and daughters getting their

hands dirty to help and this is something I have really admired. To see someone go so far out of their comfort zone to help their son or

daughter is just tremendous. I have seen many supporters screaming and shouting cheering their driver

along. Karting Brings people to-gether, its amazing to see.

Most of all though, you see how even though there might be many

different teams and everybody is striving to win, we are all one

big family at the end of the day. You see how drivers encourage

one another and have this mutual respect. Older, more expierienced drivers will often be seen teaching younger ones lines or setups and

generally giving advice and there is just a sense of community around

the sport.

I have made many friends through my karting experience, and going

to the track is like going home.

One thing is for sure though, if I could go back and start again, I’d

do it all exactly the same. though I shouldn’t take anything away from the expierences i have had and the

things I have learnt while driving stockcars, main circuit or my time

spent in drifting. Karting taught me so many lessons in life and it gave me some of the best times with

my dad and my brother. Karting is definitely more than just a form of racing, it’s a family outing like you will never experience anywhere

else or ever again.

Saturday 23 May 2015 saw Round 2 of the Border Motor-sport club, drag racing champi-onship take place on the main straight of the east London grand prix circuit. The region has been starved of drag rac-ing for quite a while and has recently been revitalized by the new drag racing committee. The interest is evident amongst the spectators though as a large crowd flocked to the circuit on the day to get a taste of the ac-tion they had been missing.Competitors from around the country also attended the event which helped to boost the num-bers which the club is eagerly trying to grow at present. The addition of a sound competition

held in the karting pits was also working hand in hand with the drag committee to provide plen-ty of entertainment.Results:4AF: 1st Place Stephen Nel 13.076 2nd Place L.Odendaal 13.346 3rd Place Nicholas Nel 14.147
