HistoryWithout the trailblazing spirit and hard work of earlyforward-thinking leaders, Mount Pleasant would not bethe exceptionally dynamic, thriving community thatstands today.

The Henry County area opened its doors for settlementon June 1, 1833, with the development of Mount Pleasantfollowing close behind in 1835. The town was the site ofthe area’s premier hard-surface road. Constructed ofwooden planks linking Mount Pleasant to Burlington, theroadway was ultimately replaced by tracks for theBurlington and Missouri River Railroads in 1856.

Established educational institutions proved to play asignificant role in the history of Mount Pleasant. In fact,the community was at one point dubbed the “Athens ofIowa” due to its strong focus on education.Supplementing the public school system, three four-yearcolleges were in operation in Henry County – WhittierCollege in Salem, Iowa Wesleyan University (now IowaWesleyan College) and German College in MountPleasant.

Home-based within Mount Pleasant, Iowa WesleyanUniversity opened in 1842 and is today hailed as Iowa’soldest co-educational, degree-granting institution. It washere that seven Iowa Wesleyan co-eds formed a newphilanthropic education organization known as theInternational PEO Sisterhood in 1869. The initialWomen’s Rights Convention in Iowa was held in thecommunity in 1870, and in 1943, Iowa Wesleyan Collegeorganized the state’s first women’s intercollegiatebasketball team.

During the area’s early years, the agricultural industryreigned supreme. While the community retained strongties to its agricultural roots, past residents understood theimportance of expanding the county’s employment basebeyond the farm. With the end of World War II, MountPleasant began to recruit new industry to the area. Theeffort attracted several new business ventures, with manyof these original companies still calling Mount Pleasanthome to this day. These long-time community partnersinclude such nationally known companies as WalmartDistribution, Veyance Technologies, Pioneer Hi-Bred andHearth & Home Technologies, a division of HONCorporation.

With two new four-lane highways, U.S.Highway 34 and U.S. Highway 218/27,intersecting in Mount Pleasant, thecommunity is less than a day’s drive fromthe Midwest’s largest markets – Chicago,Saint Louis, Minneapolis/Saint Paul,Indianapolis, Omaha, Kansas City and DesMoines. In fact, the latter highway’snickname, The Avenue of the Saints, wascoined by a Mount Pleasant entrepreneurand community leader who recognized thelogistical advantages of a highway linkingSaint Louis, MO, to Saint Paul, MN.

Henry County is easily accessed by bothpassenger and rail freight. An Amtrak trainpasses through Mount Pleasant’s historicstation twice daily on its way betweenChicago and San Francisco. Meanwhile,the Burlington Northern Santa Fe andNorfolk Southern railways help localmanufacturers keep both inbound andoutbound freight costs low. They areassisted in this effort by local shortlineoperator Burlington Junction Railway,which provides a variety of shipping andtransload services.

Of course, rail is not the only way to delivergoods. More than 70 local and nationalmotor freight carriers serve Henry County,offering full truck, less-than-truckload(LTL) and small-package shipping.

And if you hear the buzz of an airplaneengine, chances are it took off from the4,001-foot-long, hard-surface runway atMount Pleasant Municipal Airport. Therunway accommodates up to medium-sizedaircraft. A grass runway is also available.Aviators can take advantage of year-roundaccess, fuel services, hangar facilities andmaintenance services, along with executivecharter offerings and professional flightinstruction. Larger aircraft are supported atthe Burlington Regional/Southeast IowaRegional Airport. Just 20 miles east ofMount Pleasant, the airport offerscommercial airline service through AirChoice One, which provides daily flights toLambert-St. Louis International Airportand O’Hare International Airport inChicago.

Tucked among the rolling hills, naturalwoodlands and flowing rivers of southeastIowa, Mount Pleasant preserves andcelebrates its rich past through a multitudeof unique historical sites and attractions.From major communitywide events tointeresting museums, residents and visitorsalike get to experience the area’s cherishedheritage and natural resources, whilesimultaneously commemorating thecommunity’s bright prospects.

Mount Pleasant’s most highly anticipatedand largest event is the Midwest OldThreshers Reunion, which draws in around50,000 people over five days each year. Anassortment of exhibits, educationalprogramming and demonstrations depictMidwestern rural heritage at this popularevent, held the final week in August – withthe last day falling on Labor Day. Through

the event’s highlighted displays andactivities, visitors can examine operatingsteam engines and antique tractors, carsand trucks, while enjoying great food,shopping and musical entertainment.

Antique car lovers will enjoy the Red FlagHorseless Carriage Tour the last weekendin September. Vintage vehicles and theirdrivers flock to Mount Pleasant for thisfour-day event showcasing vintage vehiclesand vintage vehicle touring as theycelebrate the beginning of moderntransportation.

Distinctive museums, teeming withhistorically significant items andinformation, paint a clear picture of MountPleasant’s past. The Midwest Old ThreshersHeritage Museum is a great place toexperience the agricultural legacy of the

area. On display are steam engines –including the largest Case 110 horsepower– a working threshing machine, antiquetractors and farm implements, with anumber of prominent exhibits highlightinga variety of agricultural-related topics.

If it’s the stage you are passionate about,make sure to stop in the Theatre Museumof Repertoire Americana, an historicaltribute to the area’s theatrical heritage thatwas made possible through the dedicationof the Midwest Old Settlers and ThreshersAssociation. The museum is teeming with acollection of unique memorabilia andphotographs from early Americanentertainment. Stage curtains, playbills,costumes and more from famous touringtheatre troupes of the 1850s are presented.

Nearby Salem is home to the LewellingQuaker Museum, which was once knownas the main ticket office for the historicUnderground Railroad. The structure wasbuilt to hide escaping slaves with the use ofspecial closets, trapdoors and cubbyholes.Today, the museum contains householdartifacts typical of the 1840s – reminders ofthe anti-slavery movement. RecreationThe Mount Pleasant Park andRecreation Department oversees 10city parks, which offer everythingfrom athletic fields, playgroundequipment and tennis courts to picnicareas, a swimming pool and openspaces. The largest is East Lake Park,which spans 120 acres and isequipped with a three-field softballand a five-field soccer complex, twoplayground sites, three sand volleyballcourts, four lighted tennis courts, ninehorseshoe pits, a driving range (openfrom April through November), a 6.5-acre pond and picnic areas.

Forty-acre McMillan Park is home tosome of the area’s largest events,including the Midwest Old ThreshersReunion and the Henry County Fair,while Saunders Park encompasses theMount Pleasant Family AquaticCenter, composed of a six-lane, 25-yard heated pool, two diving boards,two water slides, a sundeck andspacious lounging area. The 60-acrepark also has playground equipment,two shelters, two gazebos and a logcabin.

Oakland Mills Park and NatureCenter is located 4.5 miles south ofMount Pleasant, on the banks of theSkunk River and is one of Iowa’soldest state parks. The 104-acre areaboasts camping, cabins, trails, fishingand guided canoe trips. The OaklandMills Nature Center features liveanimal displays and provide a close-up view of nature’s treasures.

Other parks in the city include the1.5-acre Schaeffer Park; Cranes Pond,which stretches over five acres andencompasses a two-acre pond forfishing; the two-acre Central Parklocated in the heart of the downtownbusiness district; and Green SquarePark, a smaller neighborhood site.

Mount Pleasant is also served by TheREC Center, which is managed byIowa Wesleyan College. The 30,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility wasbuilt in 1995 and houses a full-sizegymnasium, two racquetball courts,lap pool, whirlpool, indoor track,weight room and cardio equipment.In addition to these amenities are afull array of programs, summer campsand special events for people of all ages.

A day on the greens can be had at theMount Pleasant Golf and CountryClub. The nine-hole course spans2,833 yards for a par of 36. Othernearby courses include the DeerwoodGolf and Country Club in NewLondon and the Twin LakesRecreation Center in Winfield.

Several miles of recreational trailswind throughout Mount Pleasant,designed for walking, biking andjogging enthusiasts alike. The scenicSkunk River lies just outside of MountPleasant at Oakland Mills and featuresa notable water trail. Additionally, theMississippi River, Lake Rathbun, LakeGeode and a handful of state parks arelocated within reach of thecommunity.

<EducationLifelong learning is a tradition in MountPleasant and Henry County. Fromexcellent early-childhood programs to ourfour-year liberal arts college, our countytruly makes first-class education availableto residents.

Encouraging the love of learning at ayoung age is important here. Multiplepreschools provide a safe, supportive andloving environment where children cantake their first steps down the path towardfull-time students.

The majority of area students are enrolledat Mount Pleasant Community SchoolDistrict. The district enrolls approximately2,150 students in its seven facilities,making it one of Iowa’s largest publicschool systems (42 of 364). The MountPleasant Community School District iscomposed of four elementary schools (K-5), one middle school (6-8), one highschool (9-12) and one alternative highschool (10-12).

Students are prepared for the future with achallenging curriculum that stresses

technology, as well as the fundamentals ofmath, reading and science. Regular andenriched academics are complemented byadvanced placement courses, specialeducation, talented and giftedprogramming, vocational education,including Project Lead The Way,individualized classes and an array ofextracurricular activities.

Students in the district continually scoreabove the state and national average onboth the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and theIowa Test of Educational Development. Astrength of the district is the fact that 85percent of all fourth grade students scoreat or above the proficiency level in literacyand math. Mount Pleasant CommunityHigh School students regularly excel,typically scoring above national and stateaverages on college testing exams. In fact,students average an impressive 22.6 on theACT test. More than 80 percent ofgraduating students look to continue thelearning path to higher education orfurther training opportunities in post-secondary education.

Three other school districts are located inHenry County. WACO (short for Wayland,Ainsworth, Crawfordsville and Olds)serves students in the northwest part ofthe county. Winfield-Mount Union coversthe northeast, and New London, thesecond largest district in the county, is eastof Mount Pleasant. All three districts offerexceptional academic programs and greatsports and extracurricular opportunities.

Another exceptional option for schoolingis the Mount Pleasant Christian School, anondenominational, nonprofit educationalentity. In addition to offering preschooleducation for three and four-year-olds,Mount Pleasant Christian School providesa full curriculum of regular academiccourses for students in Kindergartenthrough 12th grade.

Henry County Health Center, a 74-bedfacility in Mount Pleasant dedicated to theoverall well being of the community andsurrounding area, has been recognizedfrequently at the state and national level for the quality of its care and facilities.Recent accolades include HCHC’sacknowledgement as being one of the top100 hospitals in the U.S., as well as one ofthe top 20 rural hospitals with fewer than250 beds by Modern Healthcare. Thehospital also received the “EMT-ParamedicEmergency Medical Service of the Year”award by the National Association ofEmergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT),and has been commended multiple times asone of the nation’s “Most Wired Hospitals.”

HCHC provides healthcare ranging fromcardiopulmonary, rehabilitation andinpatient services to emergency, imaging,laboratory and surgery services. County Health Center campus. <Faith&ValuesThe cornerstones of faith and values werelaid early in Mount Pleasant’s rich history.The Methodist Episcopal Church was thefirst religious society formed in MountPleasant and Henry County. In the latter partof 1835, the Missouri Conference of theM.E. Church sent young Rev. John Ruble “tooccupy and cultivate” the new field ofMount Pleasant. He preached his firstsermon in the cabin of Presley Saunders, thefirst home built in Mount Pleasant.

From this simple beginning Mount Pleasantis now home to more than 15 houses ofworship. Many local faith-based institutionsoffer holiday services, religious educationand community outreach programming tomeet the needs of the community. TheHenry County Ministerial Association alsospearheads a wealth of ecumenical initiativesand programs throughout the MountPleasant area.

<City ServicesMount Pleasant is fortunate to havehardworking, progressive leaders in placeat City Hall. The City utilizes theMayor/Council form of government, with amayor, city administrator and a council ofsix. The City offers a long list of first-rateservices for local residents and businessesthat create an unequaled environment inwhich to live and work.

Public safety is the domain of the MountPleasant Police Department and the MountPleasant and Rescue Department. Thepolice department includes a police chief, alieutenant/criminal investigator, threesergeants, eight patrol officers and a full-time community services officer. The forceis dedicated to the principles of integrity,respect, fairness and professionalism.

The fire department is also vital to ensuringsafety in the community. Comprised of 26volunteer firefighters, five volunteer

officers and two supplemental reservemembers, the department answershundreds of calls each year.

The City’s Public Works Departmentoversees the road division, storm andsanitary sewer division, solid waste

division, waste water treatment division,cemetery division and airport division.

Mount Pleasant’s Park and RecreationDepartment strives to enhance the standardof living for residents through animpressive, well-maintained system ofpublic parks, facilities and recreationalprogramming for people of all ages. Thedepartment oversees 10 park sites and agolf driving range.

Additionally, the City offers a full spectrumof utility services. Mt. Pleasant Utilities, acity-owned municipal utility governed by afive-member Board of Trustees, is theprimary provider of water and electricity.Access Energy Cooperative also offerselectricity in certain areas of thecommunity. Finally, Alliant Energy is thedesignated natural gas provider for bothresidential and business customers withinthe city.
