3

Organization Effectiveness Goals

• Create one integrated GS1 organization (EPCglobal and GDSN will no

longer be “separate” elements within the GS1 Organization)

• Deliver greater support and value from Global Office (GO) to Member Organizations (MOs)

• Deliver more effective support and greater value to GS1 customers (primarily through the MOs) that will result in faster and more effective adoption and implementation

• Have the MOS more involved and engaged in GO processes

• Create an integrated and effective process for the development of GS1 standards, solutions and services whilst ensuring the integrity and customer relevance of all development activity

• Locate all Governance within Management Board (MB) and evolve composition and function of MB as well as other leadership bodies

Why do we need an IPP?

• GS1 Working Groups specify business requirements, process, and specifications. Many patents exist and are being filed today in areas relevant to those requirements and specifications.

• Companies could hold patents on aspects of the process that later deter implementation.

• It is GS1’s role to protect the GS1 community and its investment in development and implementation to the best of its ability.

Moving forward together, to better serve your business ©2009 GS120

How to address IP within GS1

1. Develop and administer an IP Policy (must opt in)

2. Update integrated standards development process to allow for sharing of work in progress only with companies that have opted in to the specific WGs (including GS1 MOs)

3. Only those that have signed the IP and Opt-In Agreements can participate in GS1 Work Groups (standards development).

Team 5: Industry Engagement

• Work Scope• Interlocks between all GS1 Global Office teams, MO's, members and external

parties such as industry associations

• Example on following slide shows interlock between Industry Engagement and Systems Development

• Similar interlocks occur for:

Marketing Public Policy Solutions
