Well! I must say, this was certainly a hotly contested election! However, it was followed by a great Christmas Dessert party, and even a gift exchange. Golly, I’m a member also, but no one exchanged gifts with me! And they did not even offer me a cookie!!! What kind of treatment is this anyway? Oh, I do love this crowd of Hams…(HAMS...hmmmmm that term makes me hungry!) Nevertheless, I, Brinkley-K9DOG, wish GEARS Club a prosperous 2017, and all GEARS members and their families a Wonderful, Blessed and Happy 2017. (P.S: Larry, I will accept a fine bone as a consolation gift……..you know my ad-dress) HAPPY NEW YEAR Brinkley-K9DOG

Jackson Fuller-WIFOG with mother Jenny Zimmer-man visited GEARS and joined the Christmas party. Jackson is eleven years of age; obtained his Ham license earlier this year. His call sign, WIFOG was that of his Great Grandfather! He is now learning all about how to interreact with repeaters and antennas. We hope Jackson will continue developing his Ham radio skills and also keep in touch with us. You are always welcome Jackson!

KA6GND-Larry Marcum in the Spirit of Christmas!

Every Ham must experience the miraculous benefits of Duck Tape! Good gift draw Jack-son...

nu6JV 1924 Old Radio I always wanted to construct a "state-of-the-art" amateur radio station of the type that was used in 1924 when the use of "shortwave" was just beginning. The low loss regenerative receiv-er and the "loose coupled" hartley oscillator transmitter were taken from QST magazine arti-cles. The broadcast receiver was one of the most modern designs of the day.

The 1BGF Tuner, as it is called, was developed in 1924 by radio amateur 1BGF and the design was featured in

QST Magazine of that year. The circuit is a "Armstrong"

regenerative design. All components were selected from

those available in 1924. The large coils are wound from

double cotton covered solid copper wire. They are wound

in a basket weave fashion to reduce capacity and allow

the receiver to operate in the "short wave" band. This type

of construction is known as "low loss".

The potentiometer beside the tube is to set the filament

voltage. A grid leak is located in front of the tube. The

large knob is a gear reduction tuning type that drives a

high quality variable capacitor. The center control adjusts

the feedback and the end control adjusts antenna coupling.

Old Radio Nu6JV 1924 continued

The transmitter is a hartley oscillator circuit with

a "50 watter" tube. A 211 or 203A may be used. The

coil is made from copper tubing that is supported

by solid glass rods to reduce vibration. The low

loss capacitor is driven by a "velvet vernier" dial. A

single turn link is used to feed the antenna without

de-stablizing the circuit.

The broadcast receiver is a Victoreen Superhet-erodyne. It came as a set of coils and a set of in-structions. The Victoreen company only made the coils. The R.F. coils (4) cost $7.00, the Oscilla-tor coil (1) cost $5.50 and the Antenna Coupler (1) cost $3.50. Not cheap in 1924. You had to make everything else yourself. I found an old set that was made in that period (1924) but it was poorly made and not in good condition. I had an original set of instructions so I rebuilt it with new wood, front panel and some of the square wire. Most of the original components were re-used. Each tube has a rheostat in its filament to set the gain of the stage. The last audio stage was activated when you plugged in the speaker to the upper audio jack. Very hard to tune as all the controls had to be adjusted for a clean signal. Any given station may have several different set-tings of the frequency controls. You had to keep a chart.

HERE COMES THE SOLAR WIND AGAIN:

2016 might get one more blast of auroras before the year is over. Another stream of solar wind is head-ing for Earth, and it could arrive before New Year's Eve. The wind is flowing from a coronal hole (CH) in the sun's atmosphere, shown here in an image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of po-lar geomagnetic storms on Dec. 30th when a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) is expected to hit Earth's magnetic field. CIRs are transition zones between slow- and fast-moving solar wind streams. Solar wind plasma piles up in these re-gions, producing density gradients and shock waves that do a good job of sparking auroras.

After the CIR arrives, a stream of fast-moving (600 km/s) solar wind will follow. The combined effect could produce G1-class geomagnetic storms (55% chance, says NOAA) and bright Arctic auroras on Dec. 31st.

Happy New Year!
