M.A. in Peace and Social Justice with aConcentration in Interfaith Action is anemerging specialty that demands criticalskills and perspectives from beyond thereligious and/or theological disciplines inorder to be effective in post-secular contexts. These contexts point to the increasingpresence of religion-based conflict andtension between sacred and secular opinion-formers in the public sphere. In this course, you will engage contemporary theories of powerand privilege in a postcolonial age, be able to identify multipledimensions of these phenomena in interpersonal and socialcontexts, and demonstrate capacities for self-awareness andeffective negotiation of power differentials in communal and/ororganizational contexts.
MPJ 5311 - Power and Privilege in Self and Society
Required Courses for a Interfaith Action Concentration:
This course will assist students in establishing a critical andcontextualized understandings of religion, demonstrate anintegrated knowledge of research for understanding religionand models for religious engagement, and develop your abilityto challenge philosophical assumptions about religion.
Several contemporary developments will be addressed ascase studies during the term. These cases will help tosharpen your conflict resolution skills to assess conflictscenarios, develop robust mediation strategies, and design acollaborative peace plan.
This course explores the complexities of secularism andreligion and its intersection with political systems, socialvalues, and sub-movements in the public sphere. In thiscourse, you will develop a post-secular awareness to interpretthe evolving role of sacred and secular traditions whileidentifying new measures to foster collaborative relationsbetween actors in the public sphere.
