Communication, Behaviour & Credibility Analysis (CBCA)

In a collaborative partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University, EIA has developed the MSc CBCA programme to meet the needs of students that wish to understand human behaviour on the deepest level.

It has been designed to convey the latest scientific research across the core disciplines of Psychology, Sociology, Linguistics, and Criminology, to give students a holistic understanding of people and their communications.

The MSc has a balanced focus on Emotional Intelligence, Interpersonal Skills, Deception, and Behaviour Analysis. Modules such as Criminology or Emotional intelligence will be flavoured towards certain applications such as policing and coaching, however, even if you are not working or planning to move into one of these sectors directly, there are many benefits to developing your understanding of how emotions, behaviour, communication and credibility can be applied in these areas.

Having a wider understanding of the avenues that the science and research fit into, broadens your application and insight, your assessment work will give you the freedom to make links between your specific areas of interest and the module content.

Blended learning for flexible educationThe MSc CBCA is a 2-year blended learning course, combining face-to-face workshops with online webinars, online course materials, and resources delivered through a state-of-the-art learning management system.

The online platform allows you to learn from any location with a good internet connection and provides access to:

• Core Unit Content

• Supporting content and wider reading

• Interactive Reviews

• Assessment details and documentation

• Assessment submission and feedback portal

• Student forums to share the learning experience and communicate with students and tutors

• Earn badges and awards for engaging with the materials and with other students

Communication, Behaviour & Credibility Analysis (CBCA)

Aims and Objectives

This course is based on theories and techniques relating to the study of communication, the message and its channels; with a specific focus upon the behaviour and interactions of the provider(s) and receiver(s).

Its aim is to equip you with the requisite knowledge and skill sets to assess the credibility of content, its delivery and, where relevant, any potential deception and assessment of intentions, motivations and/or emotional states.

The interdisciplinary programme will develop your research skills in Communication Behaviour and Credibility Analysis drawing on the core disciplines of Linguistics, Psychology, Sociology. This includes the specialist areas of Forensic Linguistics, Criminology, Communication Theory and Digital Information.

This course has been designed with students new to the area and professionals in mind: in particular, those who need to be able to communicate effectively, and make critical judgements respecting the credibility of what their interlocutors are saying and displaying.

• A particular focus on interpersonal communication: the reading of self and others, in respect to feelings and motivations as well as meanings, using one or more of the communication channels (face, voice, body, interactional style, verbal content, and psychophysiology).

• The course is designed to start with interactive workshops ensuring a strong cohort identity for the group and online classes so that you can work through them and revisit in your own time.

• You will be trained to become a skilful researcher-practitioner. You will be encouraged to draw upon and share your own relevant professional experiences in each of the units; and to undertake a project, which has direct relevance to your profession or career aims in the Research Project.

Assessment

100% Coursework - 0% Practical - 0% Examination

The programme units are each assessed using a combination of essays, reflective writing, video/audio analyses, and research critiques. The units and their related assessments are added approximately every month as you progress through your studies to ensure that you have time to commit to each of them. This gives you the opportunity to explore the knowledge, develop skill, and also to consider the application as you move through the programme. Mentioned above, the final unit of the MSc programme “Advanced Research Project” will give students the opportunity to design and carry out their own research project, under the guidance of an appropriate tutor team member as a supervisor. This research will then be written up into the final Dissertation for the MSc and your results presented to your fellow students and the tutor team.

Behaviour AnalysisThe Behaviour Analysis unit introduces you to the multiple communication channel model ‘SCAnR’ - a six-channel analysis framework that is validated for use in high-stakes contexts. You will learn how to read the verbal and non-verbal behaviours of others across each of the six channels, including, a person’s facial expressions, body language, verbal content, verbal style, their psychophysiology, and their voice. You will also be introduced to a conversational approach that has been designed to aid interventions for behaviour assessment and ‘amplify’ leakage across all channels (due to cognitive/emotional load) and get you closer to the truth.

The Face of Emotion and DeceptionThe Face of Emotion and Deception unit examines emotions and deception with respect to the ‘Facial Expressions’ channel of communication. It takes a closer look at the key theoretical concepts and broader debates around emotional facial expressions, universality of expression, and other aspects of facial displays, including their function in communication. The unit will also introduce the student to the Facial Action Coding system - the gold standard for measuring movement on the face and how you can use this information to make more subtle and informed observations about a persons physical and mental state.

Attentiveness & MindfulnessThis unit focuses on attentiveness, an important facet in mastering the art of conversation. The act of attentiveness and mindfulness helps shift your thoughts away from your usual preoccupations and focuses you toward an appreciation of the moment and the current goal, whether that, be a negotiation or investigation. It can help you create the conditions to analyse behaviour accurately through genuine concern and interest in understanding a person’s point of view, without thinking about or putting forward personal opinions. You will develop techniques to become aware of biases and emotional states and in turn, increase the success of your interactions and support your emotional intelligence.

PsychophysiologyExamining the relationship between psychology and physiology. You will learn how thinking and feeling processes are mirrored in physiological processes, and how this supports the assessment and understanding of the behaviour you can see and hear. You will also investigate the latest technology being utilized in the field of emotion and deception and assess their strengths and limitations.

Emotional IntelligenceThe Emotional Intelligence unit investigates the different models that have been developed to scope and measure emotional intelligence. Opportunities are given, throughout, to assess the validity of the approaches critically. You will explore how these models can be applied in order to manage and influence one’s own emotions and the emotions of others. By developing emotional intelligence we can begin to increase our own self-awareness as well as our awareness of the emotional lives of others. This can have a profound impact on how we develop as individuals, how we work with others, and how we form positive, constructive, and collaborative relationships.

Linguistics AppliedThis unit explores the various linguistic theories and approaches used in order to analyse language, language use, and the acoustic qualities of the voice in relation to emotion, influence, credibility, and deception. This module provides you with the knowledge and skills to analyse the verbal and written

content communicated by others in order to assess for credibility, evasion, influence, potential deception, or important emotional and relational elements. The end result of this module is a deeper insight into the ‘words’ that are so often taken for granted in communication.

Investigative InterviewingThe Investigative Interviewing unit examines the different interviewing methods, frameworks, and models that are used throughout commercial and high-stake contexts, highlighting significant overlaps with related psychological research areas. You will become familiar with a wide range of methods for eliciting information from others and how many of the theories, knowledge, and skills explored in this module can be adopted and transferred into all professional sectors.

Masterclass This unit aims to consolidate core units covered throughout the MSc into two days of practical application. It also introduces, through engaging activities, those units that are yet to be covered. Under the support and guidance of their peers, tutors, and facilitation teams, students will be challenged to put their knowledge and skills to use in the classroom and real-world environments. Students will be introduced to and assessed in, the use of various methodologies for analysing and reporting on behaviour (with and without technology), as well as engaging with individuals with the aim of uncovering deception, raising awareness of emotional states, and identifying behavioural areas of interest.

Research MethodsThe Research Methods unit aims to develop students’ research skills and covers the research process from formulating a research question or hypothesis to developing a research proposal. This unit will focus the student on their final Advanced Research Project, helping them to develop their proposal.

Psycho-Social Aspects of Behaviour AnalysisThe Psycho-Social unit explores those areas of the psychology and sociology disciplines that apply to, and impact on, the study and practice of behaviour analysis. Exploring areas such as behavioural/developmental theories, gender, age, personality, culture, and various environmental/social contexts, the module focuses the student on research areas that aid or inform the analysis of human behaviour.

Criminology and Behaviour AnalysisThis unit focuses on areas of criminology that impact on the professional behaviour analyst, exploring various crimes, criminals, and their victims. Examining the current research being conducted in psychology, linguistics, criminology, and behaviour analysis fields, there is a focus on how and why crime takes place, the process of solving crime, and how behaviour analysis methodologies may, now and in the future, feature in stages of criminal investigations from identification of suspects, through to courtroom trials.

Advanced Research ProjectThe final unit of the MSc programme is the student’s opportunity to: formulate a research question relating to emotion, emotional intelligence, deception, or credibility assessment, which fills a gap in current scientific knowledge and understanding; design and conduct a research study to address that question and present the results to peers.
