FROM THE PRINCIPAL Lisa Morresey

Mā te wa Kia ora koutou, Open Evening Tonight Tonight, 21st August, we are hosting our annual information evening. Please encourage all prospective parents of year 6 students to attend. Even if you know a lot about MMI already, attending the open evening is an important part of beginning the transition process together. It enables you to talk with your child about intermediate, changing schools and all that we have to offer. All families, in zone and out of zone, are welcome to attend. Although, spaces are limited in 2020, we may be able to take a small number of out of zone students. The information evening begins promptly at 6.30pm, however classrooms and the specialist classrooms, will be open for viewing from 6.00 pm. There will also be entertainment in the school hall. The information evening will last approximately one hour, followed a quick cup of tea. Our student leaders, kapa haka and performance groups will also attend. Accelerate Class Information – 5.45pm – 6.20pm If your child is very capable learner and has been recommended by their class teacher, as a candidate for the accelerate class, there is an information session being held prior to the information evening. Your year 6 child should be working above level four (year 7/8) and above in the New Zealand Curriculum. Ma te wa Whaea Lisa Tumuaki

Ska Taylor-Horne and Macka Wagstaff's technology project 'Trash Trap' received an award from the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Environmental Award and $150 cash. FOOD TECHNOLOGY - TERM 3 UPDATE Due to the refurbishment of two of our specialist rooms, this term, the students have been fortunate enough to be experiencing a varied and alternative programme in Food Technology. Year 7 students have recently accepted the challenge of designing the ultimate donut whilst Year 8’s have been steadily working on designing their own restaurant/café or food truck business. Both year groups have also been learning more about taste buds and have just conducted taste sensitivity ‘experiments’. Having discovered that the number of taste buds present can vary from person to person, students went about finding who the supertasters were in their respective classes.

Students have equally enjoyed learning how physical and chemical changes take place to transform ingredients through the making of bath bombs. After planning and preparing their product, students constructed attractive packaging then presented their bath bombs to their chosen stakeholder.

But wait, there’s more! We mustn’t forget about the yummy treats they have been making too! At the end of each mini unit, students reflect on their success and identify opportunities for improvement.

The last word comes directly from the students: “At the start of the programme, I wasn’t really sure what to expect but so far the programme has been pretty good. In a way, I’ve liked not just doing food”. “It’s pretty cool that it’s different. I thought it wouldn’t work out because we are not in a kitchen. It’s been good learning how to make stuff without using an oven or elements. The stuff has been yum and creative”. “Whaea Deb (Mrs Barr) is mean as (in a good way). She works twice as hard to make sure we enjoy it…succeeds in making our day better and making me leave with a smile ”.

Our international department would be grateful if you could consider hosting a student in October.

We have 20 students coming from Japan and only half of these are currently placed.

Our students’ reports from the past have always been favourable, with many MMI students

thoroughly enjoying the experience, of hosting another student from another country.
