Leader: God calls us from the valley of dry bones. Come, listen for a word from our God.

People: We hear God calling us in a far distant voice. We had nearly forgotten God’s care for us.

Leader: The Spirit breathes life into our dry bones. God offers hope when we have lost our way.

People: Our souls wait for the refreshment God offers. Our spirits are filled with great expectation.

Leader: Christ came as a light to the entire world. Christ comes among us today to light our way.

All: We hear the teacher calling for us. Christ unbinds us that we may see and believe.

Since God has called us into covenant with Him and has gathered us for His purpose:

We, upon a profession of faith, having committed ourselves to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, and having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, do now covenant with one another as one Body in Christ.

To God the Father and the Son, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit:

We pledge our full obedience and commit ourselves to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and to honor no persuasion or command contrary to His will.

We covenant to live in this church as disciples, seeking ever to grow in the knowledge of God, and as witnesses to God’s redemptive act and sustaining grace.

We covenant to attend and support the worship of this church, its ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; to contribute to its support in its total mission by giving of our time, our abilities, and our money.

We covenant to live as Christians in our homes, to engage in family and individual devotions, to teach our children by instruction and example that Christ is Savior and Lord, and that in commitment to Him they will find life’s highest purpose.

We engage to hold one another in Christian love, to be slow to judge and quick to forgive. We shall not consciously engage in conduct which may cause another to stumble. In compassion, affection, and concern, we shall minister to each other in sickness, distress, and bereavement, pray for each other, be mindful and considerate of one another, and share one another’s joys and sorrows.

We further covenant to live as Christians in the world, to be exemplary in our conduct and just in our dealing:

We covenant to include all people everywhere within the circle of our love and concern, and to regard as of the household of faith all who worship Christ as Savior and Lord. As we hold to our Baptist heritage, we shall seek with all Christians a unity of spirit and action.

We further resolve that we shall become active members of another church when circumstances require our separation from this one.

In this covenant made we shall stand firm, holding its principles in sincerity, judging ourselves false to our professed faith if we ignore its demands upon our lives and resources, and renewing it regularly with each other before God in our common worship.

Lunch ReservationsSo that we may be prepared with enough food, please register for the free lunch on our

anniversary web page: www.oakmont50.com or in the Narthex by April 20.

We will have tables set up in our Multi-Purpose Room and Fellowship Hall, but you are invited to bring blankets and chairs and enjoy a true “dinner on the grounds.”

In recognition of Oakmont’s 50th Anniversary we want to celebrate what has happened in our history—from our beginnings in 1964 on the campus of East Carolina College, to our first service on Red Banks Road, to the ministry in our community and around the world. However, we also want to embrace the future and our God who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. As part of our year-long anniversary celebration we are asking Oakmonters (of all ages) to commit to giving 50 hours of service over the next year. A brochure, 50 Ways to be Missional at Oakmont, has been created and details 50 ministries in which Oakmonters are already involved. A brief description of these ministries is provided along with contact information for those coordinating these ministries. If you have questions, feel free to be in touch with these people for additional information. Copies of this brochure are available in Sunday School classes, the Narthex, and Grand Central. Prayerfully consider the ways in which God may be calling you to serve this year. We invite you to select at least one of these opportunities where you may become the hands and feet of Christ in our church, community, or neighborhood. You may discover a new place where you can serve God in the coming year. You may already be involved with one or more of the ministries listed and we are not asking you to take on additional areas of service outside your current involvements. We are inviting the entire congregation to be intentional and prayerful with the use of spiritual gifts, time, and efforts as we honor God during our anniversary year. During our Celebration Sunday Worship Service on April 27th we will ask each Oakmonter to turn in a Commitment Card indicating areas of ministry for the next year. A team leader from the ministry you select will contact you later to discuss your participation.

This day is referred to as Maundy Thursday, a term derived through the Old French mande from the Latin mandatum novum, “a new commandment” associated with John 13:34 and perhaps also with the footwashing reported earlier in the chapter.

It is on this night in Holy Week that we remember the final supper Jesus shared with His disciples in the context of Passover. This event, which reveals the holiness of all subsequent meals eaten in His name, institutes the beginning of the church’s celebration of the Lord’s Supper, or Holy Communion, or the Eucharist. This evening also marks the beginning of the most solemn and joyful celebration of the entire Christian year.

It is hoped that each person present will become more aware of the sadness and despair evident before and during the crucifixion. At the end of the service following the dismissal, each person is asked to leave silently as he or she contemplates the tragedy of the Cross. Jesus, the Son of God, is dead; there is nothing more to do but wait--for the Day of Resurrection!

Tonight’s service is in two parts: a remembrance of the last meal Jesus had with his disciples, and a Tenebrae (Service of Darkness and Shadows).

*Preparation for Worship

*¤¢¦¤¤¤ (read in silence) This is a night to remember, and in the remembering we

pray that we may know the full meaning of these holy symbols that we will share. They represent so much love and forgiveness, so much pain and healing, so much of what is really important in our lives. May these moments that we share together tonight prepare us for understanding with even more clarity the sacrifice and gift of a Good Friday and the incredible hope of an Easter Sunday. O God, as we eat the bread and drink from the cup, may there be a personal, meaningful moving of our spirit toward yours.

ၐ¤¡£ Michael McKnight

Leader: Come and remember the love of Jesus and the many temptations of a world that would entice us, like Judas, to betray the trust of a suffering God.

People: We come to travel with Jesus the way of the Cross, so that our Easter “alleluia” will take on new meaning.

All: Let us worship together and reflect upon the life of Christ, that we might remember what discipleship may cost, and what it may reap.

*Prayer (in unison) Joshua BreazealeHoly God, we need your help to face tonight’s challenges. We want to share in the heritage of our faith, to remember the saving drama of Passover and to celebrate Jesus’ last meal with close friends. We want to be disciples, but we also count the cost of following you. We gather as your servant people knowing we are precious in your sight, yet we’re afraid to take the risk of trusting you completely. Lead us this night into deeper commitment. Amen.

(congregation reads the part printed in bold)

On this night, we gather as the Hebrew people gathered in exile to share the Lamb and celebrate your passing over them in mercy.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

On this night, we pass on to children and strangers what we have received from you, Lord Jesus:

Who on the night you left us, took bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Do this in remembrance of me.” Then at the table with the disciples, Jesus took the cup and said, “This is my life for you, share in its newness and remember me.”

And so we remember: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

As we remember you, Lord Jesus Christ, Pour out yourself again for us and on these gifts of bread and cup. By your Holy Spirit make us living remembrances of your great love and life.

Fill us with a new understanding of love among all your children that others may see our witness and draw close to you.

We praise your name, Holy God, the One who made us, the One who faced death for us, and the One who sustains our lives, Holy Trinity.

Amen.

the name given to a medieval tradition of reading Scripture and extinguishing candles, either at the end of a Holy Thursday service or on Good Friday.

LABYRINTH with

We have set up our labyrinth in the Multi-Purpose Room.

A new addition this year is the option to also observe the Stations of the Cross as you walk the labyrinth. The Stations of the Cross guide

you through Jesus’ last hours on this earth and serve as a time of reflection on His sacrifice and His call to us to follow Him.

In recognition of Oak-mont’s 50th Anniversa-ry we want to celebrate what has happened in our history—from our beginnings in 1964 on the campus of East Car-olina College, to our first service on Red Banks Road, to the ministry in our community and around the world. However, we also want to embrace the future and our God who is able to do im-measurably more than all we ask or imagine.
