Flying tarts . . . BAKERY & CAFE, KINGLAKE WEST

A tart to takehome to mum!WHEN Kylie McErlain and partner Natalie Adams with Kylie’s parents Lynette and Graham McErlain decided to open a bakery in Kinglake West five years ago, they had one imperative: to provide a service for their community.

“You had to drive a 20 kilometre round trip just to get your bread and milk,” Kylie said. Having lived in the town all her life and taught at local schools for 15 years, she knew the community needed and deserved better.

So they transformed an empty building on Whittlesea-Kinglake Road near the entrance to one of Kinglake’s most treasured assets, the recently re-opened Masons Falls at Kinglake National Park.

Now a bright, airy space with plenty of comfortable seating inside and on the wide veranda, the building is home to the Flying Tarts Bakery and Cafe and it has become something of a local landmark, not just for its delicious food and great coffee but also its friendly

service. Kylie says great service is a key element of the business and true to their support of the community, all 18 staff members are locals.

The fare is a treat for the eyes as well as the mouth – from hearty pies and pastries, to nutrition and taste-loaded gourmet wraps and rolls, colourful cakes, tarts and pastries as well as racks overflowing daily with a variety of stone-baked artisan breads.

Everything is baked fresh daily on the premises, with quality, flavour and attention to detail paramount. Head pastry chef, Alvin Charles, who in 2011 won an award for outstanding work by a pastry chef at William Angliss Institute, is “exceptional”, Kylie says. He is joined by enthusiastic and innovative pastry chefs, Amanda Pascoe and Paul Parsonage.

Professional, innovative and dedicated to quality, the Flying Tarts happily takes on board requests – from gluten free, to flourless cakes.

“If someone wants something really specific,

we’re happy to make it,” Kylie says.

The Flying Tarts also takes its coff ee seriously and has trained baristas, using freshly ground coff ee from the award winning coff ee house, Beans and Bagels in Brunswick to ensure a great brew.

Its increasingly popular High Teas are a real treat. A variety of teas can be taken with ribbon sandwiches fi lled with nutty chicken or rare roast beef and horse radish cream; mini pastries include chicken and camembert pies, lamb and rosemary pies, salmon, dill and feta quiches and chicken, cranberry and brie pastries. There’s also traditional scones with strawberry jam and cream; and fi nish with mini sweets such as coff ee and chocolate macaroons and lamington fi ngers. Bookings are essential for this elegant repaste.

With catering for everything from small gatherings to corporate events and weddings, the Flying Tarts works hard to ensure your catering needs are met to the last detail.

The bakery is popular among visitors and locals, with cyclists, car clubs and other local groups making regular visits and it has disabled access. It’s already achieved second place in Australia’s most popular cycling café, Kylie said.

The Flying Tarts, with its cheeky motto: “A tart you can take home to your mum”, is open Mondays to Fridays from 6.30am to 4.30pm and on weekends from 8am to 4pm.

For more details phone the Flying Tarts on 5786 5800, email: contact@fl yingtarts.com.au or visit: www.fl yingtarts.com.au

ROBERT YOUNG, THORNTON

By Joanne Birtchnell

ART doesn’t get more hilarious than the works of Thornton based artist Robert Young.

Robert was born in England in 1926. He trained at the Bournemouth and St Martins School of Art in London from 1947 to 1950. He worked as an illustrator in Fleet Street, London from 1952 to 1954 before moving to Australia.

Robert worked as an advertising illustrator in Adelaide from 1954 to 1962 and then continued in Melbourne with similar work from 1962 to 1970. He also lectured at the Caulfield Institute of Technology Art School from 1970 to 1975.

Robert is a rare breed. He depicts people in whimsical circumstances and paints

about the humorous and wry side of Australian life, working in either water colour or oil.

His works are truly delightful. Full of fun, life and activity. His extraordinary attention to detail makes his paintings fascinating; the more you look into them the more you can see.

There is much to think and laugh about in his paintings. They are an endless source of inspiration and entertainment, much like Robert himself!

Robert is a most accomplished and versatile artist who is represented in institutional and private collections in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.

Robert is having an

exhibition from Friday 17th May to Sunday 26th May at Rennies at Acheron Gallery and Restaurant, 132 Breakaway Road, Acheron via Alexandra.

To discuss commissioned artworks please phone Robert on 03 5773 2340.

Natural selectionREFLECTING the artistic growth of the artist, over a number of years, this exhibition demonstrates Samm Menzies’ transition from her original initiation into the naturally dyed world of textiles.

A resistance to the use of chemical processes for adding colour to textile, and the use of recycled materials in the small soft sculptures included in Natural Selection, is the artist’s attempt to do her “environmental bit”!

Samm’s solo exhibition of printmaking and sculpture in textile and mixed media runs until 11th March.

Samm will off er two workshops, both to be held on Sunday 3rd March. Commencing at 10am, the fi rst workshop ‘Local Colour’, will provide an introduction to the basics of natural dyeing.

The second workshop, ‘Regional Postcards’ will commence at 2pm and will demonstrate the process of piecing together a small textile ‘postcard’, a visual reminder of the local landscape, refl ected in the stitching together of fabrics dyed with locally sourced natural materials.

Bookings in advance are essential, phone Cindy on 0419 517 045.

RUSTIC SIMPLICITY, ALEXANDRA

Rust in peaceRUST in Peace by Ngaere Guyatt opens with drinks and nibbles from 6pm Friday 15th March and extends across Easter.

This exhibition would have to be the epitome of the current trend called ‘upcycling’ or ‘repurposing’, but for Ngaere, making something new out of something old is something she has been doing since her childhood, when she used to roam the paddocks and raid the dry river beds of rural Victoria gathering and transforming discarded weathered wood and metal objects.

Accompanying Ngaere in her exhibition of assemblages of recycled materials is Liz Walker, a sustainable sculptor, whose art has inspired Ngaere and has

infl uenced her work. Liz Walker will have on display small scale sculptural pieces including feathers, leaves and insects made of old roofi ng iron.

Great Australian artists of our timeAN exhibition of highly inventive Australian modernist painters, sculptors, potters and print makers will be held from 28th February to 29th April. The exhibition will be opened on Friday 1st March by Ivan Durrant.

Images capturing the spiritual and universal dimension of landscape and the human psyche are at the heart of these great Australian artists. Expressionism, romanticism, mysticism, innocence and evil, destruction and creation are key elements which convey universal themes.

George Baldessin’s sensual narrative of the figurative; Charles Blackman’s intuitive evocations of

vulnerability, menace and solitude; Arthur Boyd’s rich, painterly excursions into mythical landscapes; David Boyd’s inventions of innocence, fantasy, creation and destruction; John Coburn’s eloquent refinement of beauty, nature and spirituality through abstraction; Laurence Hope’s nuances of tragedy and isolation evoked through feelings of introspection and passion; David Larwill’s raw, primal, high-keyed delineations of encrusted figuration; Sidney Nolan’s spontaneous, experimental and sophisticated images inextricably bound to iconic motifs in legend and folklore; John Olsen’s journey through the spirituality and universality

of Australian landscape and Tim Storrier’s explosions of colour, texture and atmosphere exploring the duality of decay and renewal are integral to the spirit of Australian Modernism.

Through their masterly illuminations, the legacy of each individual artist has enhanced and enriched Australian art.

On Home Ground

An exhibition by local artists Marion Bruere, Mary Hyde and Julian Bruere, of oil and watercolour landscapes with the dominant subject being Yea and surrounds, will run at Gallery 34 until 25th February.

A sense of placeCREATIVE expression in its many forms is gathering strength and momentum with the Kinglake Ranges Visual and Performing Arts Alliance.

Its exhibition ‘A Sense of Place’, presented in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Kinglake last November, transformed the Kinglake West Mechanics Institute Hall into a fabulous kaleidoscope of colour, shape and texture, with more than 120 works.

President and artistic director, Michelle Stewart said the exhibition judges (locals Deidre Hawkins, Chrissy Eustace and Thel Cardwell) were pleased to fi nd the breadth of works – etching, linocut, jewellery, sculpture, mosaics, mixed media, photography, woodwork, leatherwork and paintings in oil, watercolour, acrylic and pastel – so vast that the categories were insuffi cient for their task.

Michelle, a jewellery artist, said the exhibition was a positive experience for artists and visitors alike, and

showed the artists and their communities, after the reverberating shock of the fi res, were now embracing change and moving forward.

“The arts have an important role to play in the life of a community,” she said.

Documenting people, events and ideas of the time in their own unique way, expressing new ideas and new spirit are part of that role. The alliance also found itself part of the community’s recovery process in the aftermath of Black Saturday.

The alliance formed in March 2008 and with 130 members aged 18 to 70-plus on the books at various times, it has forged on with its aims to support local arts and artists. Its mission is simple: “Unite, create, sustain and grow” and it works to establish and maintain co-operative partnerships and friendships with regional, state and national arts and cultural organisations.

The group welcomed a familiar face as the exhibition’s opening guest: Bruce Esplin. He fi rst came to the area in his capacity as Victoria’s Emergency Services Commissioner following the bushfi res. As an artist himself and now board member of Regional Arts Victoria, he was, by his own heartfelt admission, in his element opening the Kinglake exhibition.

Alliance members have participated in many small and large exhibitions, notably the ‘Renewal’ exhibition in the winter of 2009, the Whittlesea Contemporary Art Exhibitions of 2009/10/11, and the Toolangi Art Festivals of 2009 and 2010. Members with musical talent have participated in many local events such as

the Yea Autumn Fest, Reconnect Kinglake Day and many open mics.

The group’s biggest artistic contribution was in February 2011 with its “Art on the Move” exhibition which featured in Federation Square and the Atrium in the City.

With a new committee, the KRVPAA is now looking to expand its membership – not just to artists but also to friends and supporters of local art. Plans for 2013 include mini-expos highlighting diff erent arts: the fi rst in April will focus on woodworking; in June glass comes under the spotlight; and in August textiles will be featured.

The group has planned a series of excursions to points of artistic interest and inspiration, starting with TarraWarra Museum of Art in Healesville in February.

Members will also look to work with local youth, through youth groups and schools, as well as connecting with the Kinglake Ranges Neighbourhood House and other local community houses as part of an on-going aim to make art accessible to all and connect with local people.

Michelle says the alliance is open to all ages and all artistic styles. Members are not only from communities in the Kinglake Ranges, but also from areas such as Doreen, Whittlesea, Diamond Creek and beyond. Many have moved on since the fi res, but retain a strong connection with the area.

The alliance welcomes all inquiries. Phone Michelle on 0427 727 242.

Caribbean carnivale . . . MARYSVILLE

WHEN visitors talk of autumn colour in Marysville, they usually mean the magnifi cent garden displays and huge variety of exotic trees that parade their seasonal costumes each April.

This April 12th to 14th, there’s a bit of extra colour bringing a new vibe to the autumn streetscape of Marysville. Introducing the fi rst ever Australian Steelband Festival, Lakeside at Gallipoli Park.

This festival pays homage to the humble steel pan, the sweetly musical percussion instrument developed in Trinidad that has played such a large part in the post-fi re recovery of Marysville and Triangle district.

Pantastic, bringing their tropical vibe south from the Sunshine Coast.

16 – Murrindindi Guide – Autumn 2013

MARYSVILLE

Steel bands from as far afield as Oman and Auckland will travel to Marysville to join interstate and local bands in a weekend of music and Caribbean culture.

Check out the Caribbean Festival Market for island-style wares, food and drink. There are kids activities daily and visitors are encouraged to adopt a band and cheer on the hotly contested Panorama Play-offs, and the Trinbago-style Goat Race.

The CaribVic Masqueraders will give the autumn leaves a run for their money as they don Trinidad-style carnival costumes for Saturday night’s Calypso party at Marysville’s Community Centre and then on Sunday

parade their vibrant bird-themed plumage through Gallipoli Park with local children and festival-goers.

The festival features performances from well known musician Nicky Bomba and Bustamento, Tango and Ukelele groups and jumpin’ Calypso party band, the Trinidadian Connection. On Sunday, all bands come together to create the Communities Super Steelband.

Head to Marysville this April for a weekend of vibrant colour, music, food and partying.

Information, tickets and accommodation can be found at www.ozpans.com

The world’s longest lunchLOCAL fine food, boutique wines and hospitality will be showcased once again at the World’s Longest Lunch in Marysville on Friday 15th March.

Attendees will enjoy wonderful Upper Goulburn wines matched with local fare and other treasures by our region’s finest chefs on a long table alongside Gallipoli Park Lake in the heart of Marysville.

Tickets cost $110 per person, which includes a four course menu matched with local wines, tea and coffee and entertainment.

Each year money raised from the lunch goes to local groups, organisations or specific projects.

Eat-in or Take-Away

By Georgina Beach

OVER the course of its eighteen year existence, the Marysville Lolly Shop has presented many faces, but its most recent guise – developed under the direction of present owner and blossoming entrepreneur, Julia Harris – is surely the most glamourous to date!

Reincarnated in a humble shipping container behind the nostalgic facade of the original white picket fence, the Lolly Shop was one of the fi rst businesses to rise again following the Black Saturday bushfi res.

Now, four years on, it trumpets its triumph over adversity from a shining, new two-storey edifi ce standing proudly upon the corner of Murchison and

Darwin streets, housing more culinary and creative delights than ever before.

The new building enjoyed its offi cial opening on the 17th November 2012. Inspired by the rugged alpine homes of the North American Rockies, with a dash of the pole-home style of tropical Queensland, this bold new building bears no resemblance to the old weatherboard house which accommodated the original ‘Uncle Fred and Aunty Val’s Old Style Lolly Shop’ and its several renovations. Constructed of mighty timber posts and beams supporting angular, soaring ceilings, it lends tremendous character to the Marysville street-scape.

Inside, tasty temptations abound with all the original lines of sweets and treats

available, plus many more. Special requests for new products are all taken seriously, to which end, Julia is currently introducing a much wider range of traditional English sweets – a local favourite!

But those lacking a sweet tooth are also catered for, with an array of local produce kept in stock, focusing on easy-to-prepare ingredients useful for visitors to the area to take back with them to their accommodation of choice. Local wines, olive oil, preserves, smoked meats, Yarra Valley cheeses and locally-roasted coff ee beans are just the beginning!

Plus, the arrival of 2013 has brought the introduction of takeaway coff ee, Italian frozen yoghurt, soft-serve ice-cream and an extra-

special range of homemade ice-creams produced by the fair feminine hands of the clever proprietors of Butters Cafe in nearby Buxton.

Do you remember that old TV commercial? There’s still more! Once customers’ appetites are suitably sated, they may wish to explore the unique range of rustic and oriental homewares... or browse the gorgeous handbags, jewellery and children’s clothes designed and produced by Julia’s creative daughter-in-law, Sharon, recently arrived from Sydney.

Julia’s keen eye continues to seek and investigate potential new product lines, hence, the future of the Lolly Shop is sure to hold countless surprises. Currently, her ever-restless fi ngers are itching to

construct a new herb garden alongside the shop; in which case, such freshly grown produce shall be added to the list!

Wow, amazing, luxurious, restful . . . THESE are just a few of the adjectives used by recent visitors to one of the area’s newest bed and breakfast accommodation facilities situated at Alexandra, ‘Woodlea Cottage’.

Williams purchased the 200 plus acre Woodlea farm in October 2011 after retiring from a Melbourne based property development business; Max’s lifelong desire to live on the land came to fruition after inspecting “this unique working farm”.

It was love at fi rst sight.

Consisting of a family home, farm shedding, wool shed, pond, a grass tennis court and a cute separate cottage perfect for bed and breakfast accommodation. Cheryl and Max set about modernising the décor and installing a new kitchenette and air-conditioner. Furnishings are sumptuous yet exude a relaxed chic style.

Murrindindi Training InstituteDid you know?1. MTI started in 2012 in the decommissioned Alexandra

District Hospital building. The land was granted to the Alexandra Cottage Hospital in 1891 by Queen Victoria.

2. The fi rst MTI students have graduated in Outdoor Recreation Diplomas and Certifi cates and most are already employed in the local area and around the State.

3. CEACA is the Registered Training Organisation that provides the accreditation for MTI. CEACA makes sure that students have qualifi cations that can be used throughout Australia: study locally and work anywhere.

4. MTI aims to off er the best training in the State, the country and even worldwide. We’ve made a great start with Outdoor Recreation courses, with many of the biggest and best employers in the industry supporting us.

5. In 2013, MTI will have trainees from across the State, sent by employers impressed with the 2012 course delivery.

An introduction to CEACACEACA is the Continuing Education & Arts Centre of Alexandra, Registered Training Organisation number 3730, a Learn Local provider with signifi cant funding from Adult Community Further Education.

CEACA delivers nationally accredited training that meets exactly the same quality and audit requirements as TAFE. They have a strong record of delivering relevant training with high student completion rates. CEACA belongs to the Hume Continuous Improvement Group, a collection of RTOs from Euroa to Yarrawonga, working together to ensure the quality of their work. This gives the advantages of being your local provider plus the benefi ts of a wide range of ideas.

The main diff erence from TAFE, apart from small class sizes and a more personal approach to learning is that they are also funded to help support our community. For example, they can off er subsidised training in computer or leadership skills, providing a pathway into further study or employment. CEACA also runs general interest classes that respond to your requests and skills.

22 – Murrindindi Guide – Autumn 2013

6. MTI will add new courses over the next few years, wherever we fi nd a community need and industry members willing to help us develop the best quality courses. We’re researching what training is needed, but we’d love to develop Nursing and Health. Not many students would have an old and a new hospital to train in.

7. One lucky local student will start their 2013 studies at MTI with a scholarship. We hope to off er one every year: Murrindindi is more than just the name, it’s our home.

8. Have you seen our You Tube clip? The link is on the MTI website http://www.murrindinditraininginstitute.org.au

9. MTI is the result of a strong partnership between some terrifi c local and national organisations bringing training and jobs to Murrindindi, but they have a shocking collection of names. The MTI Board alone includes ADH, CEACA, CRLLEN, OEG, YMCA Vic and local community representatives.

The fi rst person to correctly tell us what all the initials stand for wins a $50 voucher towards any CEACA or MTI course. Hint – try the MTI website for the tricky ones. Answers to CEACA on Facebook: ceacainc, 5772 1238 or www.ceaca.com.au

10. Ask for more information about MTI on 0400 689 013.

MTI might be new and tucked away on the hill, but it’s your chance to study locally and start a great new qualifi cation and career, which will let you choose to stay at home or take you anywhere you want to go.

By Gaz from Eildon Bait and Tackle

LAKE Eildon is firing on all cylinders this summer. Big fish of all species are being

caught; conditions have been perfect from one end of the lake to the other.

Cod up to 128cm have been caught; predatek, spinner

baits, jakals, stump jumpers, cod dogs, and ballista lures all have been successful. Purple had been the number one color, but in more recent times the brighter yellows and greens are working well.

Bait-wise, scrubbies, yabbies and even corn are doing well, the latter landing a 68cm cod in one of the Eildon marinas.

Yellow belly up to 15lb are a regular catch and all on similar baits and lures to what’s being used for the cod.

The best reported areas that I’ve had are the Lake Eildon Main Arm, Jerusalem Creek, the Goulburn arm and

Fraser camping ground to Woolshed Inlet.

The reddies are still about and the usual techniques are working well including Baltic bobbers, ice jigs, yabbies, and worms.

The pondage has received its last couple of stockings for a while, with over 250 big fellas going in, the majority of which were brown trout. The brown trout minimum weight was 1.2kg and the rainbows were 2.2kg.

As you would expect the local dough has been the pick of the baits with 14 browns, all around 5lb, caught in one evening session and, yes, all but one went back.

David and Gary Edmonds with a 4lb brown trout caught in the pondage on dough. The gold and silver krocs, pink and traffic light tassies, chunky cheese power bait and occasionally mudeye have also worked.

As is always the case with the pondage at this time of the year irrigation and power demand has a major affect on the water levels, however the early and evening anglers are still having quite a bit of success.

The Goulburn River is running from 5000 meg up at the moment but is still very fishable. Drifting worms, vibrax lures, spotted dog rapalas, and meal worms have all worked. The key to fishing the Goulburn at present is to work the edges and the flooded grass flats.

Gilmour’s bridge and the mouth of the Rubicon have been very productive, even

after the slaughter earlier in the year the odd salmon is still being caught in the Rubicon as well.

Big River has been producing small rainbows and browns on scrubbies and celta type lures.

In general, with the warmer weather, get out early or stay out late, and when it comes to the carp don’t leave them lying on the bank, they attract foxes, feral cats and European wasps. Dispose of them properly; bagged and into garbage bins for pick-up or alternatively the rules and regulations state they are not to be returned to the water ALIVE, so knock them on the head but puncture the air bladder inside so they sink, they then become cray or yabbie fodder.

Catch you later, Gaz.

WHEN the branch line to Alexandra township was opened on 28th October 1909 at a cost of £25,109 10s 0d, only minimal facilities were provided for passengers and freight.

The passenger platform supported only two small structures: a Station Master’s offi ce at the northern end of the platform and an equally tiny ladies’ waiting room at the southern end.

Both of these structures, like the single goods shed, had probably been moved from the former terminus of the line at Alexandra Road (later Koriella).

At this early stage of the line’s history, locomotives were serviced at Cathkin so, as far as engine facilities were concerned, only a turntable was provided.

The stock yards were situated on the northern side of the fi nal section of track, near where Clark & Pearce would later develop their fi rst planing works.

The only water supply to any of these structures was a rain-water tank attached to one end of the Station Master’s offi ce. This was obviously unsatisfactory, especially at the stock yards where often, on hot afternoons, there were large numbers of animals which had been driven long distances to be in time for the 4.40pm train.

Water supply

This was the fi rst pressing need to be rectifi ed. In January 1910 the Shire of Alexandra asked that water be laid on to the trucking yards. A plan was drawn up by the Railway Department and an estimate of £50 8s

10d was made for the total cost of supplying water to the station yards.

The work was authorised in January 1911. A connection was made to the main supply of the Alexandra Waterworks Trust at a stand-pipe in Bon Street and water was carried below-ground eastwards to the station platform in a 1¼ inch diameter galvanised pipe.

Taps were provided at the Station Master’s offi ces and between No.2 and No.3 roads opposite the goods shed. The pipe was then continued on to the stock yards where two “Alston” troughs were provided: one low-level trough for pigs and one slightly higher for sheep. In its fi rst year of operation the new system of reticulation handled 15,000 gallons at a cost of one shilling per thousand gallons. (VPRS 421, unit 049, fi le 10/22527).

Construction of buildings

The next need to be rectifi ed was the provision of more substantial buildings to handle passenger and parcels traffi c.

Tenders for the construction of new buildings to meet the specifi cation provided by the Railway Construction Branch of the Board of Land & Works were called in July 1910. For some reason these did not proceed, and fresh tenders were called in November 1910.

This time there were two tenders. The highest was from W. W. Moore & Sons for £1112 3s 10d. The second, and lowest, at £1010 6s 9d, was from Alexandra contractor J. F. Webb. Contract # 20598 was subsequently awarded to Webb on 5th January 1911.

History of the Alexandra railway facilities

36 – Murrindindi Guide – Autumn 2013

Historical . . .

A deposit of £100 was required from the successful tenderer to guarantee satisfactory performance of the contract. (VPRS 425, unit 383, document 10/15212, and Government Gazette 5th January 1911, p 4).

A second contract, # 21103, for the verandah steelwork, was awarded to Grocke & Main, boiler engineers and blacksmiths of Moore Street, South Melbourne. This second contract was awarded on 8th March 1911 and the total price for the work was to be £204 16s 8d. (Gazettal number 2468).

As the building was scheduled to be completed by 29th May 1911, work must have commenced soon after the contracts were awarded.

The specification originally called for the “rusticated” weatherboards to be cut in durable West Australian Jarrah. When, in early February, these suddenly became unavailable due to a shortage of stock, Webb was allowed to substitute Stringybark for the Jarrah so

long as the timbers were well creosoted before installation. (VPRS 425, unit 391, document 11/2418).

By 15th May 1911, the frameworks for the main building and porch had been completed. Most of the weatherboards were affixed and the flooring had been laid. The lining of the waiting rooms was complete with the exception of the dado. The van goods room and store were complete with the exception of the floors, doors and painting. The “EC” (external conveniences?) were complete and the walls and roof covered with iron. The wood yard had also been fenced in. Three carpenters and one “improver” were at work on the site. (VPRS 425, unit 400, document 11/6757).

The work was finally completed and the station buildings ready for occupation on 28th July 1911.

Under the terms of the contract, Webb was liable for £47 in fines for the late completion. These,

however, were waived, as the Railway Construction Branch considered the delay “partly due to circumstances for which the contractor could not in any case be held responsible”.

These circumstances included having to wait for the Construction Branch to remove the old Station Master’s office which wasted much of the fine weather available to the contractor, and then an extremely wet winter which delayed much of the subsequent work. Shortages of material and labour compounded the delay. (VPRS 425, unit 412, document 11/11555 and 11/11080). The final cost of the building, £924 14s 7d appears to have come in under the tendered amount.

The station now settled down to the routine of a terminus on a small country branch line serving the timber and pastoral industries.

The size of the goods shed was doubled some time

after 1922. In 1929 the 50ft turntable originally supplied when the line was built was replaced by a 53ft turntable to enable larger engines to be turned.

In 1945 the line lost its passenger service which was replaced by a bus.

Four years later, in 1949, new livestock facilities were built at the northern end of the yard.

In 1951, new siding accommodation and a large shed were provided for Utah Constructions to facilitate the unloading of materials destined for the enlargement of Eildon weir.

In 1957 Ruoak’s timber siding, the mainstay of outward traffic for so many years, was abolished.

The points leading to the turntable and livestock sidings were disconnected in 1966, the signalling placed out of use in 1976 and, in 1978, the line lost its Station Master.

The line closed in November 1978. (Weekly Notice Extracts, p 3).

Permaculture . . .By Emily Friedel and Rohan Dodds

OUR chook yard is not just a chook yard, and the adjoining vegetable gardens do more than just feed us – all elements in the beginnings of our permaculture system are interconnected and each element has more than one function.

In the last article, Murrindindi Guide Summer 2012/13, we described our partially completed chook yard complex with one garden bed down the side:

• The chickens provide eggs and are mobile fertilisers and excavators, but they need protection.

• The chicken run provides protection for the chickens, but has also proved to be an ideal structure to build garden beds along, packed

with various vegetables, particularly those that climb.

• Excess produce from the gardens feeds the chickens.

• The chickens will be protected from the strong summer sun and heat as the wire gradually becomes covered by the leaves of climbing plants. When winter comes along and warmth is required our annual climbers will have died off allowing more light in and warmth.

Since then a second, much larger garden bed has been built along the other side with recycled corrugated iron.

This bed was fi lled with a mixture of soil from the property and compost that had accumulated in the chook run – food scraps, chook poo, straw that had rotted down over several months. We tested the soil compost mix and

found it had a pH of about 6.5, which is pretty good for growing many vegetables, and so far the ones growing in it seem very happy. So, we discovered another function for the chook yard: providing half of a suitable growing medium for the adjoining vegetable gardens.

The project hasn’t been without its trials and tribulations.

The peas and beans growing up the side of the chook yard are not providing as much shade as we had hoped, and this is in part because the successful plants were established much later than we planned. The reason for this? Rats!

Unfortunately a chook yard, with its abundance of food and cosy nesting places, is every rat’s idea of heaven.

And being the adaptable and agile creatures they are, most of our efforts to protect seedlings with bird wire and netting and plastic bottle protectors were quickly thwarted.

With persistence (and a lot of cursing) we finally managed to get enough plants to a size where the odd nibble from rats on the stalk or a gnawed-off leaf wouldn’t be fatal and we have even enjoyed a handful of delightfully crisp sugar snap peas.

In Permaculture there is much talk about creating resilient systems. Sometimes it seems to be more important to be a resilient gardener and to persist and experiment despite the hurdles placed in front of you on the road towards self-sufficiency.

Autumn gardens

By Sandy Burden

WHAT a fantastic place Murrindindi is for deciduous trees, displaying beautiful colours from golden yellow to deep purple reds. Autumn is the perfect time to choose your plants for that stunning display of colour and is a great time to plant with the soil still warm, autumn rains giving your new plants time to settle in before winters’ rest and be ready to burst into spring growth.

We love maples because they drop their leaves completely, preceded by spectacular colours with such a variety of size and shape to fit any garden.

I’ll only mention some.

The Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) grows 5 metres

high with light green spring foliage to bright red at leaf fall. Acer palmatum atropurpureum grows to 3.5 metres high by 3 wide with rich crimson-red new leaves in spring, turning to bronze-green in summer, and then finally to rich crimson-red in autumn.

Acer palmatum shaina is a dwarf Japanese maple, with a bushy, tufted habit. Leaves are dark maroon during the summer, changing to a brilliant red.

Acer japonicum ‘vitifolium’, an upright, ‘vase’ shaped growth reaching 5 by 5 metres with broad, lobed leaves. Green new growth, overlaid with a dusty reddish-orange tinge and lime green veins. One of the best autumn coloured trees, a brilliant reddish-orange.

Acer saccharum grows to be a large round topped tree 18 to 20 metres high. It is a good lawn specimen with spectacular orange gold autumn foliage. This tree is the principal source of maple syrup.

Other favourites

Cercis canadensis, ‘Forest Pansy’, is a beautiful and elegant, small tree that starts a reddish-purple getting darker before softening to a greener tinge in summer then followed by brilliant yellow to orange colours

for autumn. Its open and low branching habit forms a fl at-topped canopy. A lovely, distinctive tree all year round even without leaves.

Crab apples are amazing small trees. They give you blossoms in whites to reds and many have bright coloured fruits which hang on until the leaves turn soft reds before the winter rest.

My three favourites are; ‘Golden Hornet’ a columnar shape with bright yellow crab apples, ‘Gorgeous’ because it has white fl owers and crimson red fruit and ‘Pioneer Rose’ has pink fl owers and large red fruit.

Many other trees have great colour. There are birches, beech, Chinese pistachio, elms, gleditsia, liquidambars, oaks, ornamental pears, poplars, tulip trees and willows to name a few.

Watching birdsBy Bob Tate

THE shire of Murrindindi has a wide scope for bird watching whether it is in private gardens, bushland reserves, national parks, wetlands or roadsides, there is something for everyone whatever their interests.

I have compiled a fl ier of best bird watching areas in this shire and this is available at the Alexandra Visitor Information Centre. However I shall describe a few of these in this and future articles and which are all easy to fi nd and within a short distance from the towns of Alexandra, Eildon or Yea.

The fi rst of these areas is the very popular McKenzie Reserve and the adjoining Alexandra bushland which are found just past the Scout

Hall in the extension of Grant Street (the main street).

McKenzie Reserve is entered via a wooden structure on the right hand side of the road just 1.2kms from the roundabout at the southern end of the shopping centre, and the bushland, by going another 1.2kms further south to a dirt track to the left. Go up this to a turn to the right to Lucky Mine Lookout.

Both reserves have well marked tracks and in a loop and take about one hour to complete depending on the number of stops to look at the wildfl owers and orchids as well as the birds.

Bird life will vary with the season, time of the year and time of the day, as well as the prevailing weather conditions. A reasonable number to fi nd would be

Birds . . .

40 – Murrindindi Guide – Autumn 2013

in the vicinity of 20 or more species in a one to two hour walk. However groups with more eyes and ears will see more.

Similarly the wildflowers, particularly the orchids, will vary greatly with the seasons and time of the year.

Both reserves have a different governmental status and the strictest conditions apply to McKenzie Reserve where dogs, horses, bikes, camping and fires are not allowed. The bushland has similar conditions but dogs, bikes and horses are allowed.

There are well over 150spp recorded for this area. Some of these are here all the time, whereas others migrate and are only here for a few months each summer, whilst others may have been recorded and only seen once or a very few times.

Birds of the garden and bush ~ the red wattle bird

This bird is found in a variety

of habitats, where there are flowering trees, and are very common in many gardens and parks around Alexandra.

They belong to the honeyeater group of birds, which have a partly split tongue which is brush like at the end for sucking up the nectar from flowers.

As well as nectar they feed on insects which form an important part of their diet, providing essential protein and fats. Late in the autumn they form quite large groups and migrate in search of flowering trees up north.

Garden feeding of grain to encourage these birds in the winter will deprive them of the need to migrate, and they will suffer malnutrition as they are not getting the correct diet.

The red wattle bird is quite large, around 36cms long and is distinguished by the red wattles (like a chooks comb) on each side of the face. It is somewhat stripy on the back and chest,

OF THE MURRINDINDI SHIRE

and a general dark colour, with a yellow patch on the abdomen.

It is found in a reasonable band around the east and south coast from Brisbane to Shark Bay in WA, including the Nullarbor plains. The WA bird is a slightly different sub species. It does not occur in Tasmania. Like many honeyeaters it is particularly aggressive to other smaller birds which may be competing for feed, and is very noisy having a

very harsh call. I had one pair in the garden this year which where nesting. One of these birds would attack, clicking its beak and fly directly at me. It left other family members alone. The nest is an untidy structure of twigs which is barely big enough, so the adult flows over the ends. Eggs are usually two, and only one seems to survive.

There are other species of wattle birds, none of which occur in Alexandra.

Bowden Spur puts the ‘mountain’ back in bike riding.

42 – Murrindindi Guide – Autumn 2013

Eildon Real Estate was opened in June 2011 with Mark Howard as Director.

Mark, who was born and raised in Eildon, came home to Eildon with 23 years of experience in Melbourne under his belt, to fill a gap in real estate in the Eildon area – there had been no real estate agency based in the town for several years.

Business has steadily grown since its inception, and Eildon Real Estate prides itself on gaining the highest price for a house in the area - $750,000 for a property at Taylor Bay.

Mark also handles commercial real estate, and rentals. Most of his business

is in Eildon and Taylor Bay with a few properties further afield.

Eildon Real Estate is located between the CFA station and a motel in central Eildon in a building which was used as a restaurant for many years. The building has been tastefully renovated and provides not just an office for Mark and his staff, but a community hub where people can call in to have a chat, send faxes, get help with letters and emails, etc.

The Eildon Real Estate office is also the business centre for Eildon Major Events – a group of local people, including Mark Howard, who organise major events of various kinds to be held in Eildon.

The next event to be held in Eildon is the ‘Million Paws Walk’ – an RSPCA event held around the country in May each year. The walk will use the popular track around the Eildon Pondage.

Bowden Spur puts the ‘mountain’ back in bike ridingTHE new downhill mountain bike (MTB) trail at Bowden Spur in Kinglake National Park is proving a huge hit with MTB fanatics.

Since opening in mid 2012, thousands of riders have enjoyed the trail, both as a casual user and as part of organised events. A visit to the trail on a weekend is evidence of its popularity with bikes and riders aplenty taking a spin down the hill.

The trail – named Shepherds after local MTB enthusiast Danny Shepherd, who lost his life defending his home on Black Saturday – is rated double black diamond, which means it is an extremely diffi cult trail and should only be attempted by experienced riders wearing full protective gear.

Not for the faint hearted, the trail includes some features that heighten the challenge including dirt jumps, rock gardens, bomb holes, fl owing earth berms and large sections of off -camber riding

The trail is the closest

purpose built trail north of Melbourne and the fi rst to be constructed in a national park in Victoria

Riders have come from near and far to enjoy the trail, with many commenting in person and online about what a well constructed trail it is and how much they enjoyed it.

“The trail is proving a massive success with riders giving us rave reviews. It’s also a great example of how powerline easements can be used in an environmentally friendly way that meets the need of park visitors,” said Parks Victoria Ranger-in-Charge Ion Maher.

“Without impacting on environmental values we can now off er a great recreational facility that we didn’t previously have.”

Bowden Spur Downhill MTB Area is located on Bowden Spur Road (off the Whittlesea-Kinglake Road) in Kinglake Central. For more information go to the Kinglake National Park page at www.parks.vic.gov.au or call 13 1963.

THE beautiful shire of Murrindindi has some of the most diverse and scenic trail riding in Victoria.

From riding in the magnifi cent hills of the Strathbogie’s, the rolling hills of the Goulburn Valley, fern gullies of the Marysville district, or the more challenging trails of the Rubicon mountains. It’s a trail horse riders paradise.

Club committees are able to structure rides according to the weather and riders abilities.

If it’s a hot summers day, riders head up into the cooler mountains, if it’s cold and snowy, then they head out over the hills and the valleys.

In the winter months we have progressive dinners, bowling, movie nights and a range of events to keep riders involved, when it’s too wet to ride.

With that said, riders rarely ever baulk at the weather and are always happy to ride, rain, hail or snow.

The Alexandra & District Horseman’s Association

(ADHA) has been holding rides throughout the shire for over 18 years.

Most popular with the ADHA are its monthly trail rides, held all over the shire.

The committee fondly call themselves a boutique catering group that just happens to enjoy horse riding, as the meals are always a highlight at any function or ride.

The ADHA is a proud supporter of the Alexandra show, and donates monies to local charities and organisations.

The Marysville Saddle Tramps, based out of Marysville, have been riding for over 30 years. They also hold monthly trail rides, utilising the Triangle and Marysville region, midweek ladies rides and the growing popularity of the training days, promoting fun and safety on horseback.

The riders of both clubs, often head out on overnight rides. Encouraging and teaching riders the joys of our bush and its fascinating history, and generally enjoying the pleasures of trail horse riding with

MARYSVILLERoaming the ranges . . .Marysville PEOPLE have been visiting Marysville for over 120 years, enjoying the mountain vistas, fern walks and spectacular waterfalls of the surrounding Yarra Ranges.

Early visitors based themselves in grand Victorian guesthouses, took horse buggy rides along Lady Talbot Drive and picnicked beneath tree ferns and towering mountain ash.

Following the 2009 Black Saturday bushfi res, Marysville has revitalised a network of shared trails for walkers, cyclists and horse riders to experience the best nature has to off er.

Enjoy the majesty of Steavenson Falls, take a forest drive to The Beeches or take in the expansive view at Keppel Lookout. Experience the region’s rich logging history at the Cambarville Historic Township and walk among some of Australia’s tallest and oldest living trees.

Yarra Ranges National ParkENJOY tall mountain ash forests and a lush understorey of tree ferns that thrive in the cool temperate rainforest. The park is home to many species of rare or threatened plant life and a diverse range of fauna.

Beeches Rainforest - There are many short walks from Lady Talbot Drive, just out of Marysville. The beautiful Beeches Rainforest Walk starting from the Taggerty River crossing or The Beeches passes through lush forest and is suitable for medium level walkers. Other walks along Lady Talbot Drive take in Phantom Falls and Keppel Falls. The road beyond The Beeches is rough and only accessible to two wheel drive vehicles in dry weather.

The Cambarville Historic Township and surrounding area contains an extremely valuable stand of old growth Mountain Ash, one of the tallest tree species in the world. Along the Cumberland Walk you will pass several spectacular and intriguing features, both natural and man-made.

The Big Culvert is a beautiful moss covered granite arch built around 1880 along with several other culverts of this type beneath Woods Point Road. The road was once part of the ‘Yarra Track’ used by miners travelling to the Woods Point goldfields.

At Cambarville a particular Mountain Ash, aptly named ‘The Big Tree’, is the tallest living tree known in Victoria and is one of the group known as ‘The Tall Trees’. It once stood at 92 metres, but was reduced to 84 metres by a windstorm in 1959.

Cumberland Walk, starting from the Cambarville Historic Township, is an easy to medium grade 4km circuit taking in the Big Tree, Sitka Spruce, Cora Lyn Falls and follows an old water race to Sovereign View with spectacular views of the Armstrong Creek valley and Warburton.
