It is the first known self-portrait in the history of art. The boys name was Albercht Durer. He used to write notes on his pictures to explain them. On this one he wrote, years later: this I drew, using a mirror; it is my own likeness, in the year 1484, when I was still a child. Slide 7 Return to Exhibit Marc Chagall The first time you look at this self-portrait you might think Marc Chagall had seven fingers on his left hand. Either that, or he couldnt countbut the real story is that he moved to Paris to be a painter but always missed his native Russia. This self portrait alludes to a Jewish expression that says that doing something with seven fingers means doing it fast and well. With this self- portrait Chagall seems to be saying that even though he still thinks about his home in Russia, he is glad that he moved to Paris because moving there made him a better painter, in other words: a painter with seven fingers!
