LISTENING GUIDEMIRRORS

BY JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

• Introduction- 0:00 The timbre of this song is very dynamic as there is a melody playing in the higher notes that are bold and powerful, and also a very deep melody that is quiet and sounds as if it is being played under the melody to make a bold texture in the song by layering notes. It makes me think of trumpets playing as someone royal walks out onto their balcony, meaning they are the all powerful! This intro is very rich in texture to grab everyone’s attention.

• Verse 1- 0:30 In this verse there are many different sounds happening making the texture of the song very up and down, it’s also a very staccato rhythm bouncing from line to line with breaks in the music. The timbre in this has louder instruments playing and softer noises as if coming from the mouth of someone to make a blend of music. The tempo is slower allowing it to be very clear.

• Chorus- 1:06 As in the verse previous to this there is the same rhythm happening in the music with staccato phrases but in the chorus they add a very rich string instrumental part that blends the sounds together to make it very powerful. Although the texture is still smooth because of the continuous new rhythm added in, in the chorus. The volume of the music is forte, very loud and strong. It’s very strange as well; the rhythm is somber yet powerful at the same time. It’s not a get up and dance song, but you want to bob your head and tap your foot to it.

• Verse 2- 1:57 like in verse one it’s a slower tempo with very staccato rhythm and breaks in the music as if to add a statement to the singer to keep your attention on his voice. In the second half of this verse the tempo speeds up and the timbre gets louder to get you excited for the chorus.

• Chorus- 2:33 The background music in chorus number 2 is very much the same. To hold the interest of the listeners they add a lot of stylizing to the singer to change the dynamic of the song to make it bold! The rhythm of the singer’s line has a lot more transitions from high to low jumping from octaves, while having background singers hold the original melody of the song.

• Bridge- 3:25 through the bridge of this song, the tempo of the singer slows down dramatically not singing with the original melody. Background singers transition down a note at a time sliding each note to make it smooth while the background music is still staccato and a blend of sounds, but adds one strong note played over and over to make the overall sound of the music different then what he have heard before.

• Chorus 3- 3:47 This chorus is a statement to the whole song. Very powerful with bold singing and no background music. It’s a capella with hands clapping to create a rhythm. Background singers adding texture to the song by singing oh’s in different octaves harmonizing the song. At 4:15 they add in an electric guitar that starts to pull the original melody back into focus by strumming quietly in the background.

• Chorus 3.5- 4:41 Original melody and background music starts to play again but without the original vocals, instead they have the vocals singing oh’s transitioning up and down on the music scale going from pianissimo to forte in each phrase. The texture in this is very rich with multiple different sounds happening with the main vocal, backup vocalists and the staccato background music blended with smooth instrumental string instruments.

• Second half- 5:05 In this second half of the song the melody changes very much from almost a rock feel to an r&b feel slowing down and vocals changing the melody and texture of the song. All the while the same oh’s are being sung to still tie the song to the first half of the song.

• Verse- 6:00 All previous background music is gone changing the whole atmosphere of the song bringing in a slow and smooth texture. Vocals are lighter and not as bold as before. There is a constant melody in the background singing the same line over and over making a staccato rhythm like before but with the vocals instead of instruments.

• 6:50-8:21 The last bit of the song slows down all together not telling a story anymore but reiterating what was played in the words and music before with very somber noises in the background almost as if to put you to sleep at the end of this song. The melody still playing in the background through the end with the staccato rhythm. Also main vocalist still sings oh’s sliding up and down the scale until the music cuts off at the very end echoing leaving a dramatic end to the song.

• Introduction- 0:00 As the introduction begins the tempo is slow, and each note is very smooth but you can also hear each note very easily with a thick and very bold timbre. In the background you can hear vocals in a lower octave. With the melody being very repetitive and catchy, it captivates you keep listening.

• Verse 1-0:39 The tempo crescendos with higher pitched vocals that have lots of range. The timbre is brighter than it was in the introduction and you can hear each note in the harmony. It still has a softer feeling, but it exciting and something you could dance to.

• Chorus- 1:20 with very rapid crescendos, the chorus is even faster than the first verse with a staccato sounding rhythm. This part of the song is very homophonic with many similar sounds. The melody has a lot of contour in the tempo.
