Musique Concrète

… It doesn't surprise me that traditional music has experienced a kind of exhaustion in the 20th century … many musicians have started to look outside the traditional structures of tonality.

Pierre Schaeffer – translated from French 1948

Composers usually begin with an abstract idea. The notes they write down only become ‘concrete’ when they are played and can be heard. In the 1940s, Pierre Schaeffer decided to do the opposite. He began with recordings of natural and mechanical sounds which he slowed down, looped and re-arranged, using reel-to-reel tape recorders. He focused on the rhythms, timbres and textures heard in found sounds. Schaeffer invented the term musique concrète. The effects he produced have influenced present-day studio techniques.
