This is an example of musique concrète.

• Read the following article and answer the questions that follow.

Reel-to-reel recorder

Musique Concrète

… It doesn't surprise me that traditional music has experienced a kind of exhaustion in the 20th century … many musicians have started to look outside the traditional structures of tonality.

Pierre Schaeffer – translated from French 1948

Composers usually begin with an abstract idea. The notes they write down only become ‘concrete’ when they are played and can be heard. In the 1940s, Pierre Schaeffer decided to do the opposite. He began with recordings of natural and mechanical sounds which he slowed down, looped and re-arranged, using reel-to-reel tape recorders. He focused on the rhythms, timbres and textures heard in found sounds. Schaeffer invented the term musique concrète. The effects he produced have influenced present-day studio techniques.

(i) What did Schaeffer mean when he used the term musique concrète?

Answer:

(ii) Name one example of each type of the following found sounds below.

(a) Listen to the music in this excerpt and decide the order of ‘events’ that you hear in the descriptions. Put 1 in the box beside the description to indicate the first event, 2 for the second event, 3 for the third event and so on. The final event has been written in for you.

5 è A solo female singer.

è A choir with drums in the background.

è A crescendo roll on drums ending with a cymbals crash.

è Brass instruments with some percussion in the background.

è A loud brass fanfare followed by soft repeats.

Excerpt 2, played three times. The lyrics are printed below.

(b) Listen to the excerpt and answer the questions below.

Line 1 Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord

Line 2 He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.

Line 3 He has loosed the faithful lightning of his terrible swift sword

Line 4 His truth is marching on.

(i) Line 1 has a circle. Draw a circle beside any other line that has the same melody as line 1.

(ii) Draw a different shape beside the remaining line(s) to illustrate the structure of the verse.

(iii) These shapes give the verse the form: ABAC AABA ABAB ¨ ¨ ¨

(iv) This form is known as: Unitary Binary Ternary ¨ ¨ ¨
