25 Mar 2019

Dear Parents, Guardians, Community Members, Staff and Students,

Since our last newsletter, I have had the opportunity to participate in the annual West Leeming Primary School house swimming carnival. This was a very successful event and it was wonderful to see so many of our students in Years 4-6 participate.

Congratulations to Murdoch for achieving first place on the day, as well as those students who were awarded individual medals. A detailed list is available later in this newsletter. Thank you to West Leeming’s Physical Education teacher, Mr Alan Placanica for organising the day and also to the staff who assisted in the smooth running of the carnival. I would also like to acknowledge the involvement of our parent community in assisting the school to facilitate this event. These parents shared their expertise to support our students in enjoying the experience of competing in a school-based swimming carnival. Thank you for all your hard work.

School Review Findings Many of you would be aware that an external review of West Leeming occurred earlier this term. The school has now received the report from this review. This is a comprehensive document that provides clear guidance to the school leadership in progressing West Leeming’s school improvement journey. The report has been shared with staff and the West Leeming School Council and the information will be used to develop short, medium and long term improvement targets. This includes a short-term school improvement plan to support the completion of our current Strategic Plan 2017-2019. The recommendations will also be incorporated into West Leeming’s next Strategic Plan 2020 – 2022.

The following information is a summary of recommendations from the review committee.

Summary of West Leeming Primary School Improvement Considerations 1. Develop an effective school improvement plan and associated operational plans through an embedded consultative process.

2. Review the school vision statement and beliefs about effective teaching and learning considering alignment with the distributive leadership and collaborative structures of the school.

3. Establish an awareness and understanding of change management theory aimed to maximise consultation, collaboration and school wide communication processes.

4. Provide professional learning through facilitated planning sessions for the development of a whole-school approach to teaching Literacy and Numeracy with agreed scope and sequence from Kindergarten to Year 6.

5. Ensure a whole staff understanding of, and commitment to, essential content, skills, assessments, standards and expectations at each level as delineated in the WA Curriculum and Assessment Outline (WACAO).

6. Consolidate and build the knowledge and understanding of all staff on how to raise the standard of student performance by using data in collaborative processes. Focus on student performance and achievement at the strategic, operational and class-room levels.

7. Review roles, responsibilities and expectations of school leaders across the school with a focus on instructional leadership that supports the implementation of school-wide improvement.

8. Establish a school culture with associated policy and processes that reinforces high standards of personal and professional conduct which values professional integrity, mutual respect and trust.

9. Develop a comprehensive whole school communication policy and procedures that ensures the smooth operation of the school inclusive of community engagement opportunities.

The review report is not a publically available document, however, you are welcome to contact me at the school should you wish to discuss the outcomes in more detail.

STUDENT PHOTOS All parents like to take photos of their children at school assemblies and whole school events, eg our upcoming Summer Carnival and ANZAC service. If you are including children other than your own children in the photo, as a courtesy, it would be appreciated if group photos are not placed on social media unless you have the permission of the other parents.

PUBLICATIONS PERMISSION Upon enrolment, parents decide whether to give consent for their child’s name, photo or work to be published in school newsletters, school related activities, promotional material for the Department of Education and articles for the West Australian and community newspapers. This consent continues for your child while enrolled at our school. If at any stage you want to change the permission status then you will need to notify the office in writing of this request.

CARPARK SAFETY We once again remind parents and carers who are dropping off or collecting children to exercise extreme care.

Please make sure they do not run across the carpark; walk around the edge of the carpark instead. Little people can be hard to see from the driver’s seat of a big car; they also tend to be very quick.

Also, please supervise children getting in and out of cars in the car park. The side of a staff member’s car was left dented last week from a car door that had been flung open.

Please slow down around the school, park in designated areas, make use of the “kiss and drop” zone correctly and keep our kids safe.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS – PARENTS/COMMUNITY MEMBER

The West Leeming School Council has one position vacant in the parent/community member category. The Council has identified a need for members with an interest in governance and/or skills outside of education to enhance the capacity of this committee.

Interested parents and members of the community are encouraged to consider nominating for a position on our Council. If you would like to nominate, please contact Mrs Sara Willis, Manager Corporate Services, in the School Office to register your interest. Where more than two nominations are received, parents will have the opportunity to vote through an election process.

More information about our School Council is available on our school website, including an information package and a training module outlining the role of a School Council in a public school. Interested people are also welcome to contact the Principal, Mrs Lisa Tucker or Mr Ben Ash, Council Chair through the School Office.

Please note that it is a Department of Education require-ment that all members of a School Council undergo a mandatory National Police History Check screening process before being able to join. For more information, please contact Mrs Lisa Tucker, Principal.

Nominations close on Friday, 29 March at 3.30pm.

PUPIL OF THE WEEK

WLPS ALUMNI Dreams do come true! Ashleigh Appleyard was a student at West Leeming from 2003 - 2011.

As part of the Science curriculum this term, Year 5 students have been learning about the Solar System. Students were required to research a planet and choose how they wanted to present their information. The standard of work was really high. Well Done to all Year 5 students!

NEWS FROM S5 Last Thursday, Mr Sharma, who is a senior process engineer from Woodside visited S5 to demonstrate a lesson on how engineers drill for oil in the real world. Using bread, vegemite and sprinkles, students built a reservoir sandwich and drilled for oil. The session was a huge success and introduced the students to various career pathways within the field of engineering. Mr Sharma looks forward to visiting the other Year 5 classes. NUT MINIMISATION We have children throughout the school with a severe allergy to nuts and nut-based products. Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction and is potentially life threatening.

The whole school community needs to be aware of the danger presented by peanuts and nut products. It is most important to understand that even traces of nuts can cause anaphylaxis. The sensitivity is such that these children can have a reaction from just touching another child’s hands or sharing toys and equip-ment with others who have been eating peanuts or nut products.

As a result, parents are asked to avoid sending with their children, any food containing peanuts, nut-based spreads or nut-based products. Please also be mindful of the ingredients used in birthday cakes, class party foods or other occasions when ‘special’ food is brought to school.

DUTY OF CARE BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL Parents have the duty of care for students travelling to and from school. This means it is the parent’s responsibility to ensure their child arrives safely to and from school. Absences will be recorded as a “U” (Absent—Cause not established) if no reason is given for the absence.

Schools are responsible for duty of care of students once they are in the school grounds during school operating hours. At our school, if children come to school prior to 8.40am, they are asked to sit quietly outside the library where supervision is provided by the Administration. Classrooms will open at 8.40am.

After school, it is expected that children make their way home straight away unless under the supervision of parents. The school cannot take responsibility for students who are at school after 3.15pm. Please make sure your children understand the home-time arrangements that apply to your family.

For more information, view extracts from the Department of Education’s Duty of Care Policy.

KEEPING SAFE Our children’s safety is important. When walking to and from school children should: Travel in company Walk on right side of road to see oncoming traffic Where possible leave space between them and road way Stay in areas that are well lit Stay in view – avoid going to areas hidden from view (parkland bush) Be alert – earphones can reduce awareness considerably If a passing car stops never get too close Do not hesitate to run from a situation in which you feel at risk Report suspicious behaviour to parents, school and the police, noting number

plates of cars and/or clothing or distinguishing features of individuals.

Please note

new deadline

UPDATING SCHOOL RECORDS It is vitally important that we have

up to date contact information for your child. If you have changed your address, phone numbers or emergency contact

person, please contact the school office.
