FoREwoRD by Matt Benedict, President

As MARCOA evolves into not only the print leader for all CONUS military relocation guides, telephone directories and maps but the online leader as well, I thought it would be beneficial to provide the Sales Field a resource guide to help us best reach that goal. This resource guide was created by our IT team as an overview of the www.mybaseguide.com website and the features that you and our advertisers will be most interested in. We have many exciting options that will not only increase revenue streams but will also help stave off the relentless competition we encounter day in and day out. Features such as the Military Friendly Business search, mobile web (aka “App”) and social media integration are now part and parcel to the www.mybaseguide.com experience. As traffic to our site continues to grow, exposure to our advertiser’s messages and promotions will grow through these tools as well. Integrating how our online presence advantageously affects a potential advertiser into a sales presentation will undoubtedly help increase sales for yourself, MARCOA and ultimately that advertiser.

I realize that each of you will incorporate the information in the resource guide differently into your sales presentation. Though this guide is comprehensive, Mike and I are here to help if you have any questions or need guidance about the benefits of our online programs. Our IT team is also available to answer any questions you have about the sites and their functionality. We are also looking forward to hearing your ideas and input from advertisers about how we can improve the site. With our combined efforts, I have no doubt we will be the print and online military reloca-tion guide leader for the foreseeable future.

The logo for My Base Guide appears at the top left corner of every page, a standard place-ment across the web and where users will most likely expect to find it. The logo reinforces the My Base Guide brand and provides a consistent, instantly identifiable element throughout the site.

In addition to enforcing the brand, the logo acts as an easy to use “reset” button. On every page (except the Home page) you can click the logo to be brought back to the home page. Perfect for showing a customer or potential customer exactly how to navigate directly to where their advertisement is/will be.

The Main Site Navigation bar can be found just below the My Base Guide Logo. This navigation bar is the easiest way to navi-gate through the many pages of content on MyBaseGuide.com.

Hovering your cursor over a link in the main navigation bar will show a drop down menu with links pertinent to the active link in the navigation bar. Example: The Army link is active on the right so the drop down menu displays links to each Army Base (a) covered on MyBaseGuide.com as well as current articles for Army News (b) and a Spotlight On a particular base (c).

This not only supports the stated Mission of MyBaseGuide.com but more importantly serves to draw visitors and increased repeat visitors to the site. The Spotlight On section of the menu highlights a randomly chosen base for each branch whenever the page is loaded. This features the cover of the current publication for that base as well as a brief paragraph from the Welcome section of that publication.

Below the spotlighted publication you will find five links to secondary pages on MyBaseGuide.com. These include a full Library of our publications, a Base Locator, an About Us page, and how to contact us.

The Secondary Navigation Pod on the installation pages is one of the most important areas of MyBaseGuide.com from a Sales standpoint.

The Articles Tab (default) contains links to each article for the chosen installation but more importantly, the icons above link to My Base Guide’s more powerful features.

Virtual Guide - The Virtual Guide button takes your to the fully interactive, digital representation of the printed guide.

Hotel Listings - The Hotel Listings button takes you directly to local hotel listings in our Military-Friendly Businesses database.

Apartment Listings - Direct link to local Apartments in the Military-Friendly Businesses database.

Real Estate Listings - Direct link to local Real Estate Agents in the Military-Friendly Businesses database.

At the very bottom of the page, in the footer, you will find the Tertiary Navigation. This helps viewers navigate around the site without having to scroll back to the top of the page after reading an article. It also allows us to place links to pages that, from a user’s standpoint, aren’t relevant enough to be in the main navigation bar at the top.

MyBaseGuide.com offers a full compliment of social media integration. Clicking the Facebook (left) or Twitter (middle) icons takes you directly to the My Base Guide profile on these services. Encouraging users to follow My Base Guide on these services allow us to stay in more direct contact with them in a medium they prefer. The RSS Feed icon (right) allows visitors to add our news feeds to their feed reader of choice. All of these options work to encourage repeat visits and increased traffic to MyBaseGuide.com.

Recent ActivityFoUnD on: Home page and Branch pages

Facebook has become an enormous asset in driv-ing traffic to a website but doesn’t do so automati-cally. The most effective way of driving traffic to a website is by encouraging visitors to share links to articles with their friends on Facebook. By clicking the like button a link to the article is

shared on the person’s Facebook page for their friends to see.

The Recent Activity pod displays MyBaseGuide.com’s four most recently shared articles on Face-book along with links to that particular article.

Twitter FeedFoUnD on: Installation pages, Article pages and Military-Friendly Business pages

Along with a Facebook page, MARCOA main-tains a Twitter account to accompany the My Base Guide website. The Twitter Feed pod on the Installation page shows the 5 most recent “Tweets” from the My Base Guide Twitter account.

To follow My Base Guide on Twitter for instant updates, visit www.twitter.com/mybaseguide and click the Follow button.

The map on the Home page shows off all the installations covered by MyBaseGuide.com. Click on a map spotter ( ) to display a popup with the installation name and links to that installation’s page (view base), a zoom feature (zoom to this location) and a link to the Advertiser List-ings for that installation (friendly businesses).

Branch Installations MapFoUnD on: Branch pages

The Branch Installations Map functions in the same manner as the Map of Covered Installations with one main exception. Instead of showing every installation covered on MyBaseGuide.com, only the installations for that specific branch are shown on this map.

Business listing MapFoUnD on: Business pages

The Map on the Business page is loaded from Google Maps and displays the driv-ing route from the installation to the Advertiser’s provided address.

DirectionsFoUnD on: Business pages

The Directions on the Business page are loaded from Google Maps as well and pro-vide driving direction from the installation to the advertiser. In the case of service members living off-base, the directions will automatically update as they change their by dragging the marker on the base to a location closer to home on the map.

The Latest Articles pod on the home page shows the most recently published or updated articles from the site. These “articles” are the beginning of each chapter from the printed guide. Once the guide has printed, these articles are updated to reflect the current edition.

latest Branch ArticlesFoUnD on: Branch pages

Similar to the Latest Articles pod on the Home page, the Latest Branch Articles pod displays the most recently added or updated articles from the various installa-tions under that particular branch.

Installation Specific ArticlesFoUnD on: Installation pages

An installation’s page features a list of articles (chapters) pulled from the most current published guide. This list of arti-cles includes a brief introduction (gener-ally the first two or three sentences of the article) along with a thumbnail image of a page from that chapter.

Clicking on the title of the article will bring you to the Article’s page.

ArticleFoUnD on: Article pages

Every chapter in the printed guide is represented as an article on MyBaseGuide.com. Once a new guide is uploaded for the Virtual Guide (the digital equivalent of the printed guide) these articles are updated to reflect the current edition.

The articles are typically limited to five or six paragraphs from the beginning of each chap-ter. The last line of the article is a link titled “read more...” This link loads the Virtual Guide on the page where the viewer can resume reading the remainder of the chapter.

The thumbnail image at the beginning of the article is a sample age from the current publi-cation. Click the thumbnail to load the Virtual Guide on that page.

ShareFoUnD on: Article pages

After the article text, on the right side of the page, you will see a share button ( ). When you hover your cursor over it, the Bookmark & Share window shown here on the left will appear.

This share window offers a variety of options for visitors to easily share these articles across the most popular social media and social bookmarking sites.

Facebook is by far the most popular service here, which is why we offer the ability to include Facebook comments, but offering easy sharing to these other services is still benefi-cial to driving traffic to our site.

Facebook commentsFoUnD on: Article pages

Facebook has become a major engine in driving traffic to websites over the past year. The two biggest elements of this ability are the Like button and the ability to comment on websites using your Face-book account, both of which can be see here in the Facebook Comments area.

If you’re already logged in to your Facebook account, you will see your profile image and “Logged in as [Your Name]” at the top of the Comment Box. If you’re not logged in, there will be a Log In button below the comment box, allowing you to sign into Facebook with out leaving My Base Guide.

Once logged in, clicking the Like button will place a short line will display for your friends saying “[Your Name] likes a link.” along with a link to the site you liked.

Currently a sample advertisement is displayed on the Branch, Installation and Article pages however there is space available on the Home page as well. Military-Friendly BusinessesFoUnD on: Installation pages and Business pages

The Military-Friendly Businesses Pod is your access point to our database for the installa-tion’s advertisers. Every MARCOA advertiser is represented in this database and all have been placed in a Category and subsequent Sub-Category for ease of searching and finding the particular services a user needs.

In the example to the right, if you are looking for a hotel in the Fort Benning area, you simply pick “Travel” as your Category and “Hotels” for your Sub-Category and hit Enter. To make searching even easier if you don’t know the Category or Sub-Category something is under, you can simply type “Hotels” in the Search Term field and hit enter.

The results page will show all listings in the Hotels Sub-Category along with any that have been tagged with the keyword Hotel. These listings are free for advertisers regardless of their ad size. By clicking on the small gears icon at the bottom right of the pod, users can designate how many listings they wish to see at one time on the results page as well as if the results should be sorted alphabetically by Business Name or by proximity to the base.

On the results page, the Business Name is a link to that Business’s page.

The blue “>>Website” link with direct you to the advertiser’s website if they have provided us with one.

The red icon with the magnifying glass is a direct link to the Virtual Guide page with that advertiser’s ad on it.

All of these listings are also viewable from any phone. Please refer to the My Base Guide Mobile Listings section for more information.

Business DetailsFoUnD on: Business pages

All of MARCOA’s advertisers have been added to our Military Friendly Businesses database along with all pertinent information provided on their contract or in their ad. This information is shown in the Business Details area on the Business page and includes their address, phone number, toll-free phone number, dis-tance from the base and a link to their website. (The additional keywords provided with their contract help them show up in the search results but do not show up on the site.)

Also available in the Business Details area is a link to their ad in the current Virtual Guide edition of the installation’s guide. Click the red “View ad in virtual guide” button to launch the Virtual guide on the page the ad is shown on.

Features to Assist SalesSEARch

The search tool within the Virtual Guide searches the guide for any word or term within the text of the publication. Because the majority of the ads placed within our publications are images, this tool is not intended for finding advertisers as they won’t show in the results. Similarly, the keywords provided on the contract for an ad are not used within this search.

If you are looking for an advertiser, use the Military-Friendly Business search tool on the Instal-lation page (see page 19). With the Military-Friendly Business search, all information provided by an advertiser in the contract is searched (including the keywords) and included in the results. The search results lead you to the Business page where you will find Details (see page 20), including a link that opens the Virtual Guide on the exact page the advertiser is placed.

BookMARkS

The bookmarks feature allows you to quickly find a particular section of the Virtual Guide. From a sales standpoint, the most useful bookmarks are:

Cover PlacementsAll 3 cover placements (inside front, inside back and outside back covers).

MapsThe maps each get a bookmark so you can easily find an ad with a map placement by clicking the bookmark for that map and manually turning the page to show the ads.

Note - Many installations have decided they do not want maps of their installations online for security reasons. These pages show up blank in the Virtual Guide (with a note that the maps are not available), however the area maps and ads are still available.

Military Buyer’s GuideThe Military Buyer’s Guide has a bookmark which will bring you to the first page of the YPs and also has alphanumeric bookmarks that lead you to the first page of classifications for that letter. (Example: if you’re looking for Banks, click on the “B” bookmark).

ABoUT ThE APPSAll of MARCOA’s advertisers from Base Guides and Family Living Guides have been included in one large database which fuels the Military-Friendly Busi-nesses search on MyBaseGuide.com (see page 19).

There are two ways to access the database while on the go. Both methods return the same information as both pull it from the same source database.

The first way is to visit http://mobile.mybaseguide.com from any mobile device with a browser. This includes (but is not limited to) iPhones, iPads, Droids, Xooms, Blackberries and Windows Phones. This is not an app that needs to be installed, it is a mobile website designed to work across nearly every plat-form. Hence, we refer to it as the “Mobile Web” version.

The second way to access the database is through an app that gets installed on your mobile device. We have an Android app, which can be found in the Android Market, and an app for the iOS platform (iPhone/iPad), which can be found in the App Store. For more on installing these apps, see “Installing the Apps” on page 31.

Not only does this increase our offering’s attractiveness to potential advertisers, but it also serves to make MyBaseGuide.com a resource for the public. The better the resource, the more return visits it generates, which in turn helps make it more attractive for advertisers.

Mobile web

On your first visit, you will be prompted to choose a default base. Under “Choose Default Base,” click the drop down menu next to “Select A Base” and pick your base from the available options.* Once your base is chosen, you will see the 16 categories and number of listings in each category on the Home Screen (shown on the right).

To change this selection in the future or to view other nearby bases, click on the icon of two small gears at the top right of the screen. This will bring up the settings screen, where you can find the “Select A Base” drop down menu and pick a new base* from the list.

Android App

Press the menu button on your device and tap the “Select Your Base” option from the menu. Choose your new base* from the list and you will be returned to the app’s home screen with the new base as your default.

ioS App

The first time you open the App, you will be prompted to choose your base from the list of available installations*. Highlight it in the scrolling list and click the done button at the bottom of the screen. To change your selection in the future, click on the white hammer and wrench icon in the bottom left hand corner and select a new base from the list.

* Important Note: If you don’t see your local base, it means that the information for it has yet to be added to the database and should be coming soon. We have prioritized which bases get added based on sales cycles so yours should be ready by the time your next campaign begins.

Find a BusinessThere are two ways to find a business with the mobile application.

Browse

The home screen shows a series of tiles, each relating to one of sixteen categories. All advertisers’ listings have been classified into one of these categories, and in some cases further broken down into sub-categories. To find a particular business type and browse the available listings, tap on a category tile.

The sample screen above, right shows the Housing category for Everett Naval Station. The sub-categories of “Apartments,” “Other” and “Real Estate Agents/Offices” are shown along with an option to “View All “of the listings within the Housing category. Tap on the sub-category or View All to view the Business Listings screen.

Search

This is where the Keywords associated with each contract come into play. The search feature in the apps (and on MyBaseGuide.com) uses those keywords along with busi-ness names and categories to return relevant results to users. The keywords ensure that, for example, a seafood restaurant without “seafood” in the name, will show up in search results for seafood.

Mobile Web: To search for a listing, click on the icon of the magnifying glass near the top of the screen (just to the right of the logo). Type in what you’re searching for and click the “Search” button.

Android: To search for a listing with the Android app, tap your device’s “Menu” button and select “Search” from the pop up menu. Type in what you’re looking for and tap the magnify-ing glass icon to perform the search.

iOS: To search for a specific listing, click the magnifying glass icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Type what you’re searching for in the search field. The results will instantly populate below the search field as you type.

Business listingsThe Business Listings screen is shown here on the right. The example is from the Automotive category of Camp Pendleton. Regardless of how you arrived at this page (through Browsing or Searching) this page will appear the same with the only difference being the number of businesses shown, which depends on your base choice as well as your search criteria.

Tap any of the listings to view the Business Details screen.

Business DetailsThe Business Details screen displays the contact infor-mation for the chosen business.

Tapping the phone number on a phone (either Android or iPhone) calls the business. On a tablet, you are given the option to add the phone number to your contacts.

Tapping on the address shows the location of the business on a map. Currently, on iOS devices, this is a one way street and you will be unable to navigate back to the listing screen. This should change once the actual app is created.

Tap website to view the advertiser’s provided website.

BacktrackMobile Web or Android app: tap the back button (for your browser when using the Mobile Web and on the device when using Android) to return to the previous screen.

iOS app: since there is no back button on the device itself, you will see an arrow in a circle at the top of the screen next to the My Base Guide logo. Tap this button to return to the previous screen.

InSTAllInG ThE APPSMobile web

The is nothing to install to use the Mobile Web version of the app. Point your device’s web browser to http://mobile.mybaseguide.com and you’ll be able to access all of the available listings.

AndroidTo install the App on your Android powered phone or tablet, visit the Android Market on your device and search for MBG Listings. In the search results, you should see “MBG Business Listings” along with the My Base Guide Logo and MARCOA Publishing, Inc. as the pub-lisher of the app. Tap the listing for the app to access its page on the Market and click “Install” to install the app to your device.

ioSVisit the App Store on your device (iPhone or iPad) and search for MBG Listings. You will see MBG Military Friendly Business Lisitngs in the search results. Currently, the app is only formatted for iPhones. It will work on iPads, but will run within an iPhone sized window in the center of the iPad screen.
