The next morning, while Jane was at her favourite clothes’ shop looking for a birthday present for Melissa, she saw Rod there with Diana, her best friend. They were talking and laughing. “How could that be?” Jane thought. Diana had always told her that she didn’t like Rod.Before they noticed her, Jane ran into a changing room and listened to their conversation. “Go outside for a moment, Rod,” said Diana. “I want to give you a surprise.”“A surprise?” said Rod. “Okay, I’ll go out, but don’t be long.”

Jane opened the door of the changing room a little and watched Diana. “Can I see those earrings on that shelf over there, please?”As soon as the shop assistant turned away, Diana very quickly, took a T-shirt from a clothes rail and put it into her bag. Jane couldn’t believe her eyes. How could Diana be a thief? “This is crazy,” she said to herself. “I must speak to rod about this.”When the assistant showed Diana the earrings, she shook her head and walked out of the shop.

Later that day, Jane went to the town park where Rod usually practised basketball. When she got there, he was sitting on a bench next to Diana. He was wearing the T-shirt that Jane had seen in the shop that morning. “Jane,” shouted Diana. “Come over here and sit down.”As Jane sat down with them, she saw Diana’s father walking towards them. “Hello,” he said. “This is where you are, Diana. I’ve been looking for you all day. You left your purse at home this morning. I was worried because you’ve got all your money in it, so how could you have lunch?”Rod was petrified. He couldn’t understand.
