The National winners’ essays will apear in an issue of the American Beekeeping Federation’s Newsletter.*Each State Winner, including the National winners, receives an appropriate book about honey bees, beekeeping, or honey.

2016 Essay Topic“Bees and Pollination. How Important is it?” Beekeeping has had its five minutes of fame for the past five years. Now more than ever, people are asking, “What will happen if the bees are gone? Your paper should research and help answer this question.

Survey your community to see what is being done. Include your state in your survey to see if there are any programs they are using for pollination or any other program that could aid the honey bee.

The scope of the research is an essential judging criterion, accounting for 40% of your score. The number of sources consulted, the authority of the sources, and the variety of the sources are all evaluated.

Personal interviews with beekeepers and others familiar with the subject are valued sources of

information and should be documented. Sources, which are not cited in the endnotes, should be listed in a “Resources” or “Bibliography” list.

Note that “honey bee” is properly spelled as two words, even though many otherwise authoritative references spell it as one word.

EligibilityContest is open to active 4-H Club members only. 4-H’ers who have previ-ously placed first, second, or third at the National level are NOT eligible; but other state winners are eligible to re-enter. Students must write on the designated subject only. There will be NO exceptions.

17th Annual New Mexico State 4-H Dog SchoolJune 10-12, 2016, in Albuquerque, NM

By Linda Herrera Valencia County 4-H Leader

We are excited to be in the planning stages of the 17th Annual New Mexico State 4-H Dog School, which will be held on June 10 – 12, 2016. 4-H Dog School is designed to help each 4-H youth and their dog to become familiar with each other while learn-ing the different skills of Obedience, Rally-Obedience, Showmanship and Agility. It is important to the youth and their dog that the youth is able to handle the dog by themselves. There will be different levels of training offered: Beginning training for first time dogs and/or handlers and those that have a year or two of training, or Intermediate/Advanced training for dogs with several years of training and/or competing. Participants may be asked to participate in the training with or without their dogs. If at any time they wish to watch and learn, that is always welcome. Each of the trainers is knowledgeable in their event and their time is volunteered for the weekend.

On Friday afternoon, each 4-H youth is encouraged to give a 1 to 3 minute Dog related demonstration or presentation, as well as bring their 4-H Dog Project sheet or their 4-H Dog Record Book to be judged.

There are always have fun demon-strations held during the day to give the dogs and youth some time to rest. These demonstrations allow the 4-H youth and their families to see that there are different occupations and events that they can be involved in with their dog. A few that we have had in past are: Police Dogs, Earth

Dogs, Frisbee Dogs, Dancing Dogs and Grooming.

We would like to invite all 4-H Dog Project leaders, County 4-H Agents and those from the State 4-H Office to come, watch, participate and learn at any time during the weekend.

This year the 4-H Dog School committee held a “Dog Gone Dog 5K Run” in Los Lunas, NM as a fundraiser. Participants could run or walk, with or without their dog. The fundraiser allowed the committee to purchase Agility and ring equipment to be used for training and at dog shows. This event will be held again this year on May 21, 2016 at the River Park in Los Lunas, NM. Everyone is invited.

The 2016 New Mexico State 4-H Dog School will be held on June 10, 11, and 12, 2016 in Albuquerque, NM at the Bernalillo

County Sheriff’s Posse Grounds (which is donated). The training arena is covered and camping spaces are available for $25 per night. Pet Friendly hotels in the area of Alameda and I-25 may be found at www.petswelcome.com. The committee provides lunch, snacks and water all three days. Registration will be done through your County Extension Office. Registration deadline is Monday, May 2, 2016.

For more information visit the State 4-H website at http://aces.nmsu.edu/4h/state--national-events.html. For updates and other info on this event and other 4-H Dog events, check our Facebook “New Mexico State 4-H Dog Program” or contact Linda Herrera or Sherry Galemore at [email protected].

Helpful TipWhen you see publication numbers for any New Mexico 4-H Publication, they are typically followed with an N-# or an R-#. For example, 4-H Cakes 100.E-86 (N-08). This denotes if a project is a Revision (R) or New (N) and the year of the publication. Cakes is a new project book in 2008. Look at the publication number to make sure you have the most recent version of any publication.

The 2015-2016 Projects and Literature Handbook catalogs are available at your County Extension Office or online at http://aces.nmsu.edu/4h/projects/documents/nm-4-h-projects-and-literature-handbook_2015-2016_online.pdf. Meet the State 4-H Team

Britt DixonChaves CountyNM State 4-H PresidentMy 4-H story began long before I ever walked this Earth. My parents grew up with 4-H, as did their parents and their son, too, would follow in their footsteps; but my passion for 4-H is far deeper than an act of simple inclination or habit. True, 4-H did help me in defining my identity, but I fell in love with 4-H for how it inspired me to mature and kindle the values of Head, Heart, Hands, and Health in fellow members. That’s why I ran for office on the State 4-H Leadership Team, and sought for reelection in a second term.

My first term on the Leadership team was served in the office of Treasurer. In that year fellow team members and I lead workshops at our state Youth Get Away as well as

Britt Dixon Abby Spindle Clay Bob Stearns

traveling around New Mexico and to the Colorado State 4-H Conference. The enthusiasm that we were able to ignite in young 4-H’ers reinforced my original passion for the organization, and I now hold the office of President on the Leadership team. I first ran for office to make a difference in the lives of aspiring youth, and I anxiously look forward to the impres-sion that this year’s team will be able to make.

Abby SpindleSanta Fe CountyNM State 4-H Vice President Hi, I’m Abby and I am the State 4-H Vice President. Ever since the first time I saw the officers at my first state conference, I have wanted to be one. They have always been role models to me. From working shows at state fair

to putting on Youth Get-Away, the state 4-H leadership team have always been someone to look up to.

As a younger 4-H member, I was always rather shy. But 4-H helped me to come out of my shell, and I would like to continue to help younger members the same way 4-H helped me.

Clay Bob StearnsLincoln CountyState 4-H Secretary Youth Get Away was one of my favorite things as a kid. For the whole year I looked forward to it, the friend-liness between everybody and all the learning that I could do and behind it all were the state officers. I saw these people inspiring me and all those around me to become and achieve more. From my first YGA on, I knew that I would be there to do the same.
