Growing up in south-west

Victoria I experienced my fair share of cold winters, so when I moved to the Sunshine Coast I expected to breeze through July still

wearing my singlets and shorts. Sadly I seem to have acclimatised, and while the retro glass shutters in my bathroom are quaint during summer, they let in a lot of cold air in winter. A recent trip south has reminded me Victorian homes are much warmer than ours, simply because they’re designed with cooler temperatures in mind – meaning heavy-duty insulation, fi replaces and my Mum’s famous ‘drying cupboard’, which was a built-in wardrobe in the laundry with ducted heating vents inside. This month we have tips to warm up your Coast home until it’s time for another beautiful summer.

WORDS JARNA BAUDINETTE

As the weather cools down, many Sunshine Coast residents fi nd their homes

are more suited to summer than winter. Our houses often feature high ceilings, tiled fl oors, large, open-plan living zones and plenty of glass – making them cool and breezy in the warmer months but chilly when the mercury drops. As a result, if you are planning to renovate at this time of year you may be considering your heating options. If you are looking to heat the whole home, speak to your builder about installing ducted reverse-cycle air-conditioning – this type of system is an asset in summer and can add resale value to your property, while also providing heat in winter. Under-fl oor heating is also becoming more popular (see page 12 for more).

But if your home is well insulated and needs extra heating only in the main living area, installing a fi replace is a great way to add warmth and character. Traditional fi replaces burn wood to generate heat, and while a wood-burning fi replace or stove is well-suited to a country-style home and can become a distinctive feature, installing one takes careful preparation. Incorrect installation can create a fi re hazard, so it is imperative you consult a professional rather than tackling the job yourself.

The key distinction between a fi replace and a stove is that a fi replace is built into an existing wall or structure, while a stove can stand alone. (Many older acreage properties still feature a classic pot belly stove in one corner of the kitchen or living

room). While a stove doesn’t require the foundation, non-combustible hearth and fi rebox of a traditional fi replace, you will need a fl ue pipe and chimney for both. There are strict guidelines around the dimensions and setup of your fl ue and chimney, and you will need to have these regularly cleaned and maintained to prevent fi re.

If you live on an acreage property where small pieces of wood are in plentiful supply, a wood-burning fi replace can be a cost-effective way of heating your home. However, if you live in a standard suburban home you’ll need to factor in the cost of fi rewood and make sure you have somewhere to store it out of the elements.

If you like the look of a wood-burning fi replace but don’t

want the maintenance, consider a gas version. This type of fi replace is fuelled by LPG or natural gas and includes ceramic replica logs, to mimic the look and ambience of a traditional fi replace. Because gas fi replaces don’t require wood for fuel or emit heavy smoke, they are more energy effi cient and better for the environment than other varieties. To keep the air in your home clean opt for a vented or fl ued version, which allows carbon dioxide and other by-products to escape outside. You can also buy vent-free gas fi replaces, which are an option if you only want to heat a small space for short periods of time, but are not recommended as the primary heat source for a home.

The other option is an electric fi replace, which is fi re, smoke and vent free and does not give off

any fumes or carbon dioxide. Electric fi replaces can be turned on and off with the fl ick of a switch, don’t require fuel and are easy to install and maintain. They are available in a wide range of shapes and styles and will suit virtually any decor, so are perfect for more contemporary homes where a traditional, rustic fi replace may look out of place.

However, rising electricity costs mean an electric fi replace can be quite expensive to run, especially if it is being used as the primary heat source for your home. Consider your family’s electricity usage before installing any new appliances, and to make your home more environmentally friendly you may be able to install a solar power system, which will also reduce heating costs in winter.

Fired upIn the warmer months we love

to entertain outdoors, but many people are driven inside during July and August. If you are a keen cook and want to use your outdoor area year round, invest in a wood-fi red oven for your backyard, which will keep you warm and is perfect for cooking winter treats such as pizza.

If you’re handy you can build your own oven from adobe clay or bricks, or you can purchase and assemble a kit oven. Size and insulation are key, so consult an expert for the right materials and dimensions.

A range of pre-made ovens is

also available from quality manufacturers, who will help you choose a style to suit your yard and will even help you install the structure. The oven can stand alone or you can make it the feature of a larger entertaining area, but if you are planning to enclose the space to create an outdoor room make sure there is adequate ventilation.

If you want extra heat but won’t be cooking outdoors, opt for a portable ceramic fi re pit. With any exposed fi re safety is paramount, so always keep a safe distance from the fl ames and store fi rewood away from embers and sparks.

Bright ideasWhen choosing decor for your renovation,

the best advice is to keep things as neutral as possible. Classic whites and soft earthy tones appeal to most tastes (which helps if you sell your home down the track) and don’t date as much as bold colours, meaning your home will still look stylish in fi ve or 10 years.

However, if you love colour and want a more eye-catching kitchen, there are a few easy ways to incorporate bright tones into your home. First, consider what kind of mood you want to create. Warm colours such as yellows, oranges and reds give a cosy feel (and also stimulate appetite), while cooler tones such as greens and blues create a calming sense of openness and space.

If your home has an existing colour scheme it is best to work within this, so choose one tone or

material and design your kitchen decor accordingly. If your home is predominantly neutral and the kitchen will be a feature, then try to narrow your choice down to one key colour and use variants of this to complement and accessorise. You may be able to base your choice on a single, standout element, such as a particular fl oor or wall tile, or a splashback or striking benchtop, so browse the web and design magazines for inspiration. Alternative, purchase sample pots of your favourite colours and take them home so you can test colours in the space – the

amount of natural light and the surrounding colours can affect the appearance, and a colour that seems warm and inviting in the paint store can look dark or dull in reality.

Finally, remember a kitchen also needs to be functional. Whether you opt for stainless steel or white appliances, you will need to make sure these don’t stand out for the wrong reasons. Rather than selecting individual elements, try to design with an overall theme in mind and incorporate your chosen colour into the living area as well.

Warm waterW e all dread a cold bathroom in winter,

so if you’re renovating try to design your bathroom to receive maximum sunlight. If your home has ducted reverse-cycle air-conditioning the bathroom will be as toasty as the rest of the house, but if not you may need some extra heating to get you through the cooler months.

If you are extending your home and building a new bathroom, you can install under-fl oor heating in the concrete slab; or if you’re renovating a full-size family bathroom you may want to consider retrofi tting this type of heating on top of the existing concrete. Under-fl oor heating uses electric cable or small pipes fi lled with warm water installed under the tiles, which heat the fl oor to a uniform temperature and radiate gentle heat to warm the air above it.

Shower the peopleTHERE ARE A NUMBER OF

EASY HEATING OPTIONS TO SUIT ANY SIZE BATHROOM.

Water-based systems especially are a safe and energy-effi cient way of heating a large space, and under-fl oor heating can also be installed in your kitchen and living areas.

For a smaller bathroom, overhead heating is a popular and cost-effective choice, and typically comes in a single unit with a light, exhaust fan and heater. These units take up very little space but still generate plenty of warmth. If you have existing lighting and exhaust you can opt for a wall-mounted panel heater or radiant heater instead.

If your bathroom is small and well insulated, you may not need additional heating at all – instead opt for a heated rail to keep your towels dry and warm.

Don’t forget to also consider your hot water system, as water heating can account for one quarter of all household energy use. In the past, electric hot water systems have been most popular, but rising electricity costs mean many households are better off with a gas or solar-powered system, which are also better for the environment. Speak to your builder about which option suits your family.

Wallpaper is back...and it’s easy!Wallpaper is the best way to change the entire feel of a room. It’s no longer the tired old product that was diffi cult to hang. These days it is a brilliant feature addition to any room, the most cost effective way to add style and a touch of luxury to your décor. The big bonus is that modern wallpapers are easy to hand, last longer and come with great textured patterns. There is also textured paper that you can paint with your favourite colour.

Touch and feelTextured paint is a great way to add interest

to your home while maintaining an existing colour scheme. Suede-look paint will add depth and texture to your walls, and can be easily applied in a few simple steps.

As with any painting job, you’ll need to prepare the wall by sanding back and fi lling any chips or imperfections, then applying a good-quality undercoat. You’ll need a roller and a wide paint brush, and don’t be tempted to scrimp on materials – a textured surface requires more brushwork than a standard wall, and you don’t want a cheap brush to spoil your work.

Starting with a clean, even surface, apply the fi rst coat of paint using a roller. Don’t be concerned if the paint appears thin – suede paint is designed to be more transparent than standard

house paint, to allow the texture effect to show through.

When the fi rst coat is dry, apply the second coat using the brush in a random, diagonal criss-cross motion, with each stroke around 15 centimetres long. Allow the criss-cross patterns to overlap – the idea is to create a casual, unfi nished look. Unlike regular paintwork, don’t worry if there are brush marks showing, as these create texture on the wall surface.

You can also use two or more colours in a technique known as colour washing. Use two similarly toned colours, with the

brighter tone as the base coat, or if you’re feeling bold you can opt for two contrasting shades. – a paint retailer can give you advice on which combinations work Use a satin or semi-gloss fi nish for the base coat, while the top coat will need to be a glaze – you can buy a premixed glaze or mix your own, but consult your paint specialist to make sure you have the correct ratio.

Apply the glaze in small sections, using the same criss-cross pattern. Alternatively, for a softer look you can apply the paint in small circular motions using a sponge or cloth. IM

RISING COSTSRetail electricity prices have already increased around 30 per cent over the past few years, and a 2010-11 report from the Australian Energy Market Commission projected a further 37 per cent increase in nominal terms nationwide, and a 42 per cent increase in Queensland by June 2014. The introduction of the federal carbon tax is also set to impact on household costs, meaning many Coast families will need to cut back on their energy usage.

Lighting accounts for approximately 20 per cent of household energy use, but many

Electricity costs have skyrocketed and will continue to increase over the next few years.Wide World of Lights has tips to help you cut down your bill, one energy-saving light bulb at a time.

homes still have traditional incandescent bulbs, which use far more electricity than newer, energy-effi cient varieties.

LOVE LEDS LED light bulbs need only 10 to 15 per cent of the energy used by a standard light bulb. As a result, the team at WWOL says installing LED lighting in your home will save up to 90 per cent on your lighting electricity costs, and because an LED bulb lasts up to 50,000 hours, you will also save money on replacing blown light bulbs.

LED lights are also extremely versatile – they come in a huge variety of colours and don’t emit any heat, so they are perfect for lighting heat sensitive areas such as the kitchen pantry or a wardrobe. LEDs also come in handy strips, which can be placed in ceiling recesses, on shelves or in drawers to offer soft, striking illumination.

GO FLUOROFluorescent lights will save up to 80 per cent on your electricity costs, as they are four to six times more effi cient than standard incandescent bulbs and last up to 8000 hours.

WIDE WORLD OF LIGHTS SPECIAL FEATURE

Fluorescents are great for situations that require stronger illumination – opt for a long, industrial-sized white fl uorescent in your garage or workshop or choose a smaller, warm-toned fl uorescent for either side of your bathroom mirror.

TURN IT DOWNUsing dimmers is another easy way to cut down your electricity usage. A dimming switch allows you to adjust the strength of your lighting to particular situations, such a dinner party or when watching a movie, so you won’t waste power on extra light.

While it may not seem like an obvious choice, smart wiring

is another way home owners can cut back on their electricity costs. A home automation or smart wiring system will allow you to tailor your appliances, heating and cooling, and most importantly lighting, to suit your family’s needs, which will minimise the amount of electricity you waste. Stephen Camilleri from Wide World of Lights says this technology can be easily programmed to suit different rooms in the home.

“A home automation system can detect when you walk into

Spending a little extra cash to invest in smart wiring will save you money in the long run.

a room, and automatically the lights will ramp up to 75 per cent,” he says. “Lights will ramp up and down depending on the activity in the room. The system can also open and close blinds depending on the time of day, which is great for energy saving.”

WWOL has installed an automated lighting system in its Morayfi eld store, which is the largest lighting showroom in Australia. “When people walk through the showroom the lights are at 50 per cent, but if they stay there longer than fi ve minutes the lights go up to 100 per cent.”

As well as giving customers an example of how home automation works, Camilleri says the system has contributed to WWOL cutting its electricity usage by 40 per cent over the past 18 months. One of the major benefi ts of automated lighting is that the system automatically turns off lights in empty rooms, which is especially important if your family always forgets to turn off the lights when they leave the house.

“Some people shy away from installing smart wiring because it can get expensive, but you don’t have to do your whole house at

WIDE WORLD OF LIGHTS SPECIAL FEATURE

once,” Camilleri says. “I often advise clients to start with one or two rooms, for example the media room and the kids’ bedrooms, so they can get an idea of how the system works. Then if they like it, we can actually retrofi t smart wiring to the whole home.”

If you do choose to install smart wiring across your whole home, remember that with electricity prices on the rise, a full home automation system will pay for itself over time, by reducing the amount of electricity you waste – and the cost of the bills you have to pay.
