When I was a kid and my family visited Queensland for holidays, I used to love f ying over the suburbs and seeing hundreds of little swimming pools dotting the landscape.

It seemed like every backyard had a bright blue spot in it, while in southern Victoria only a few lucky friends had pools, and the rest of us made do with the Olympic-sized public one down the road. If you’re thinking of adding a pool or updating your existing one, September is the perfect time to get started – check out our special pools feature on page 24 to make sure you’re ready for summer. We’ve also got tips for making the most of outdoor living on page 6, and some stylish decorating ideas over on page 22.

WORDS JARNA BAUDINETTEIt’s the end of August, and

while we have a few more chilly mornings ahead of us

on the Sunshine Coast, the weather will soon be warming up to its summer best. This means short sleeves and more trips to the beach; but it also means hot days, balmy nights and, if you’re not clever with your home renovations, a stuffy interior.

If you f ick through the latest real estate ads you’ll see most newly built or renovated homes feature ‘spacious, open-plan living areas’. While these spaces look great and encourage interactive family time, opening up your living areas also lets more air circulate through your home, especially if you have doors or windows which allow plenty of natural ventilation.

Natural airf ow is the easiest and cheapest way to cool your home, and with rising electricity costs it is important to cut down on energy use and make the most of the free ventilation you have available.

The concept of indoor/outdoor living has become increasingly popular over the past few years. Many renovators are choosing to modify the rear or side walls of their home, and are installing expansive glass sliding or stacker doors, which open directly onto an outdoor patio or deck. By opening the doors you are able to combine your kitchen, indoor and outdoor living spaces, providing a seamless transition between the two. This is perfect for the warmer months, when you want to be able to prepare food in the

kitchen but eat and entertain guests outdoors.

Speak to your builder or architect about the work and costs involved in opening up your living space. When choosing the doors, opt for versatility and security – stacker doors are a good option because they allow you to vary the amount of air you let in. If your home has high ceilings and you don’t want to extend glass all the way up, consider installing some high louvered shutters for extra ventilation.

On the exterior, an outdoor room is one of the best ways to maximise our enviable climate. A covered outdoor area will offer shelter from the elements, and extending your home’s roof ine over the patio or deck will ensure you can enjoy the space year

round. It’s a good idea to position your outdoor entertaining area as close to the kitchen as possible, so look realistically at the available backyard space and decide how large you want the area to be. This will depend on how you plan to use the space – you may want to simply relax on a couch or daybed, or you might like to host dinner parties or even cook outside. Consider how many people will need to use the space at once.

So the outdoor room feels like a true extension of the interior, aim for continuity with your existing architecture. Use similar materials for the roof and f oor – if your home has timber f oors opt for decking, and if you have chosen a neutral f oor tile look for a patio paver in the same colour scheme.

The same thing goes for the furniture. Along with your traditional outdoor setting, consider adding some couches in a contemporary design to promote relaxation. If you have an existing outdoor area, an inexpensive way to brighten it up is to add accessories in striking summer colours – vibrant blues, sunny yellows and bright, grassy-toned greens are all sure to lighten your mood.

Another growing trend is the outdoor kitchen, which can be as simple as a built-in barbecue and serving bench, or can incorporate an oven, sink and bar fridge, or even a wood-f red pizza oven. Speak to your local kitchen specialist to get an idea of what you can afford, and set about designing your dream entertaining area.

Easy does itMost builders and real estate agents agree

it is worth spending money in the kitchen. As one of the most well-used rooms in the home, your kitchen needs to be functional as well as stylish, and it is worth allocating as much of your budget as possible to ensure you end up with a practical space that looks great.

But if you’re on a tight budget and are happy with the existing layout of your kitchen, there are a few easy shortcuts to spruce up its appearance without having to spend too much cash. An obvious place to start is the cabinetry. If this looks tired and dated, you can either repaint the doors or remove them entirely to create open shelving (be mindful that you’ll need to keep your pots and pans tidy though). An alternative is to just replace the door and

A TIGHT BUDGET WITH THESE HANDY TIPS.

drawer handles with more contemporary f xtures – you’ll be amazed how much of a difference this simple change will make.

Replacing the benchtop will be slightly more pricey, but if you have a laminated surface choose a square four-centimetre edging rather than a rounded one, which will give the illusion of a solid benchtop and look more expensive than it is. Many suppliers offer pre-made countertops that can be easily adjusted to f t your kitchen. Alternatively, if your kitchen has existing stainless steel appliances

and you need extra bench space, purchase a freestanding stainless steel work bench from a commercial kitchen supplier – this will give your kitchen an industrial edge, and also provide valuable storage.

If you’re handy, you can retile your splashback – opt for smaller, light-coloured tiles for a contemporary look. And as with any room, the easiest way to brighten a dull space is with a fresh coat of paint. Visit your local paint retailer for colour inspiration, and add some brightly coloured bowls or appliances for effect.

Simply the bestSimplicity is often key to creating an

effortlessly stylish home, and nowhere is this more true than in the bathroom.

For busy couples and families the bathroom is a relaxing haven, one of the few rooms where individuals can escape for some much-needed peace. So rather than cluttering up your bathroom with unnecessary appliances and accessories, stick to classic shapes and simple, clean lines, to create a calming space that you want to spend time in.

This look won’t work well if you have make-up and hair products strewn across the benchtop, so the f rst step is ensuring you have adequate storage.

Choose a long, horizontal cabinet with a matte white f nish, which will encourage you

WHITE TONES, STAINLESS STEEL AND PLENTY OF STORAGE.

to stow away clutter so it doesn’t ruin the aesthetic. When it comes to essentials such as towels and shampoo, incorporate the storage into your design – stack f uffy white towels on a simple wooden chair, or choose a sleek stainless steel shower holder to match your mixer and tapware. These should be in a timeless, elongated design, and be sure to keep up your cleaning so they stay in good condition and don’t date.

Opt for a large, rectangular mirror above the vanity, which will complement the stainless

steel elements and make the bathroom appear larger.

On the walls, simple square or rectangular tiles will create a fresh look – remember the larger the tile, the easier it is to clean. And for the overall colour scheme, stick with soft, earthy browns or neutrals, which match well with white, and accessorise with a few wooden or bamboo details to bring nature into the space.

If earthy tones aren’t your favourites go for a soft blue instead, which is a calming colour and creates a sense of openness and space.

Natural feelGrowing environmental awareness

means many people are becoming more eco-friendly around the home: installing rainwater tanks, switching to solar power, and choosing energy eff cient appliances and ‘green’ paints. While you may have thought about these things while planning your renovation, one element you may not have considered is eco-friendly f ooring, but there is an increasing number of healthy, sustainable options available for residential f oors.

If you have your heart set on hardwood f oors, speak to your timber supplier about the materials used – a lot of Australian timber is sourced from sustainable growth forests, and you may also be able to use an eco-friendly, water-based f nish.

Eco-friendly f ooring……IS GAINING POPULARITY, AS

CONSCIOUS RENOVATORS CHOOSE MORE SUSTAINABLE SURFACES.

For a similar look, bamboo has a much shorter growth cycle than other hardwoods, while cork bark can be removed without harming the tree, making these both highly sustainable choices. Also, many brands of timber laminate f ooring are made from recycled materials. This type of f ooring is easy to lay and maintain, and doesn’t require heavy stains or f nishes.

Carpet is becoming more environmentally friendly through the use of recycled materials or natural f bres such as sisal and seagrass, which are

tightly woven to reduce the need for harsh glues. When you are purchasing any kind of carpet it is best to pay for quality, and if you have a higher budget you will be able to choose a longer-wearing natural material with a more even appearance. If you love the idea of a natural-based surface but can’t afford to carpet the whole home, oft for bamboo f oors or ceramic tiles and instead invest in a few large woven seagrass rugs. And remember wool is also a natural f bre, and is the most sustainable of the traditional carpet varieties.

It doesn’t get an y better than this.

Paint the townChoosing a new colour scheme for your

home is one of the most enjoyable tasks in the renovation process. So with this in mind, set aside a Saturday morning to visit your local paint retailers and get a feel for the colours and f nishes you like.

The golden rule for picking paint is to always take a sample pot home before you buy anything – surrounding colours and the amount of natural light in a room can drastically alter the appearance of a particular paint, so make sure you test the colours on your shortlist f rst.

Aside from this, there are a few other key tips that will help you purchase the right paint. First, measure your rooms to get an accurate idea of how much cover you’ll need – this will help you work out a budget, which will narrow

Choosing paint……IS AN ENJOYABLE EXERCISE, BUT

THERE A FEW THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN QUALITY AND FINISH. down the available choices.

Where you can, opt for the premium line in the range, as pricier paint generally means better quality and higher durability.

Look at the rooms that need to be painted and consider how you will be using each. For high-traff c hallways or kids bedrooms, opt for a durable, low-sheen acrylic you can easily scrub without damaging the surface. An adult-focused living space, such as a sitting room or media room, is better suited to a specialised or textured surface, or even sophisticated wallpaper.

Steer clear of high-gloss paint unless you’re prepared to pay a professional painter-decorator – a gloss f nish draws attention to any imperfections, so the plasterwork and undercoat will need to be impeccable.

As always, the most important advice for choosing colours is to stick to a fairly neutral palette. Whites, beiges and earthy browns appeal to most tastes, which is important if you plan to sell your home down the track, but also means you won’t tire of your own decor in a few years’ time.

We’ve had a facelift so come and see our newly renovated showroom at 2/5 Premier Circuit Warana.

A glass actMore than 30 per cent of your home’s heat

exchange occurs through the windows. In summer outdoor heat radiates into the home, and as glass offers very little insulation you’ll need a window covering that will give shade and privacy, but will still allow maximum ventilation to stop your home from becoming hot and stuffy. Curtains have great insulation properties but need to be closed for maximum effect, so unless you prefer darkened rooms during the warmer months you are better off opting for blinds or shutters, which will allow you to easily control light and airf ow.

Slimline timber blinds are minimalist, functional and match almost any colour scheme, while bamboo is also becoming a more popular choice. Another option is the innovative

honeycomb-style blind, which is made from a high-tech cellular fabric and has excellent insulation properties. This type of blind offers plenty of shade, but if you opt for a light colour it will also allow enough illumination into the room.

Shutters f t snugly into any window shape and allow you to have maximum control over airf ow. Glass shutters look stylish but offer little shade, so timber or a synthetic material is best for your main windows. If you have high ceilings and would like some extra light in your hallway, bathroom or

living area, a row of horizontal shutters just under the roof ine can be stylish or practical – just be mindful you’ll need to remember to close these in the event of a storm.

If you have west-facing windows that are exposed to the harsh afternoon sun, awnings may be the solution. Made from durable and weather-resistant fabric, these are mounted on the exterior of your home and can be pulled down to provide shade and privacy, shielding your home from glare and UV rays. Awnings are a great choice for your living areas and bedrooms.

STYLE

What’snew?

It’s all semi-industrial in this season’s hottest bathrooms. According to Kohler, the look includes subway tiles, low-prof le basins, wall-mounted tap f ttings and built-in baths. While stylish, this room is designed for utility, with the f oating vanities and streamlined f ttings making cleaning easy. The glossy wall tiles and white f oor in this space ref ect plenty of light, contributing to the feeling of unfussy cool. Want this look? Head to kohler.com.au.

Taking inspiration from modernist classics, Jonathan Adler’s Mrs Godfrey chair in Tuileries Tangerine is formal without being stuffy. Head to jonathanadler.com for more.

You can afford to be stylish with the Malin Rund quilt cover and two pillowcase set, just $29.99, from Ikea. Head to ikea.com.au.

Smeg’s LIFT rangehood, $4990, is a stylish bit of kitchen gadgetry that takes the fume remover away from

the wall and conceals it in the benchtop. With a single touch it rises effortlessly and can be returned to its

hidden spot when not needed. Find out more at smeg.com.au.

Making the most of summer means soaking up some rays while the kids splash around in the pool, right?

Unless you live a stone’s throw from the beach you can’t beat the convenience of cooling off in your own backyard; and even if you are close to the water, a stylish pool can be what transforms a standard outdoor space into an entertainer’s dream.

While a pool is one of the most important elements in your outdoor lifestyle, many Sunshine Coast residents don’t think about their pool until the f rst heatwave of the season. When you’re renovating, it can be easy to focus on your home’s interior before turning your attention to the drab square of grass outside; but remember installing a new pool or renovating your existing one is a big job. You’ll need to start thinking about the pool area now, so you can have it spruced up and ready to go for summer.

Installing a new pool requires a decent-sized f nancial investment, but if you plan your

READY FOR SUMMERSPECIAL FEATURE

outdoor area carefully your family will get years of enjoyment from it. The f rst step is deciding on a location – choose an area that gets plenty of direct sunlight and keep in mind the necessary excavation, which can be expensive. Also consider how large the pool needs to be. If your kids will be hosting pool parties you’ll need a larger swimming area, but if you are just looking for a quick refreshing dip a plunge pool will be more cost effective and easier to maintain. Whatever your block size or budget, consult a professional pool builder who will help you maximise space, possibly by suggesting an L-shaped pool or inf nity-edge design (these are great for sloping blocks).

Other key issues with pool design are

visibility and accessibility. If you have young children, you may want the pool in a highly visible central location, to make it easier to keep an eye on them. If you are modifying your home’s layout as part of your renovation, consider wrapping the design around an

TOP TIPIn summer the temperature can stay warm long after the sun has gone down, so don’t forget to budget for lighting for the pool area. LED strips or lighting are a great way to illuminate the edges and steps of your pool, and can also be used to highlight architectural features such as a waterfall. Tuck bollards or spotlights into your garden to accentuate the landscaping, and for a really stylish touch when entertaining, invest in some candle-style lights that f oat on the pool surface.

internal courtyard pool, which will maximise views of the pool from inside the home.

If you have an existing pool and are happy with its location in the yard, there are a number of options to modernise the appearance. If the pool has a concrete base and sides you may be able to paint this or have it resurfaced with stylish blue mosaic tiles or a natural-looking pebblecrete. Depending on the pool itself, you may even be able to alter the shape or size – speak to a professional pool renovator about the work and costs involved.

If the pool itself is in good condition, consider updating the surrounding area. You’ll be amazed at the difference fresh timber decking or stylish new paving tiles can make to a tired backyard. Don’t forget to incorporate landscaping into the pool area as well. Choose a particular style, such a tropical resort feel or Balinese design, and use elements from this throughout your garden.

Finally, remember in any pool area safety must be your primary concern. There are State Government and local council laws regarding pool fencing, so make sure your pool area complies with these at all times. Safety can also be stylish – today’s glass pool fencing is made from sturdy, toughened material and comes in framed, semi-framed or frameless styles, which all look great matched with natural timber, bamboo or stone.

When it comes to selecting furniture, keep comfort and practicality at the top of your wishlist. If your timber furniture will be exposed to the elements ensure it is properly treated to prevent weather damage.

Adding some Asian-inspired design

elements, like this natural stone Buddha statue, will give your pool area an exotic

twist, so you’ll feel like you’re on holiday

Potted plants are a low-maintenance way to bring nature into your pool area. Speak to your local nursery about the right varieties for your home, and choose a striking pot that matches your colour scheme.

It’s important to f nd the right balance between natural elements and contemporary design. If your pool area has a glass fence, pop some large, smooth pebbles in a glass vase and use this as a centrepiece for your outdoor entertaining area.

If you love the outdoors, you can incorporate natural elements into

your pool area by using stone, rock and plenty of plant life to create a feature that blends with the surrounding environment. For a smaller pool area, consider a pebble wall with mosaic detailing and perhaps a waterfall cascading into the pool. If your pool is larger, you can construct a more dramatic feature incorporating rocks, small pools and a natural-style running waterfall.

READY FOR SUMMERSPECIAL FEATURE

Naturalhigh

For an easy natural look, forgo the traditional steps and have your pool builder create a gradual beach entry, which will slope gently under the surface of the water.

Your pool area should feature plenty of native plants, and good landscaping is key to creating a useable, natural-looking space. A professional can tailor a design that maximises the available area and gives your greenery enough room and sunlight to thrive.

You can use either natural or manmade rocks and stones – speak to your builder and landscaper about which will suit your pool. If you don’t have space for a standalone feature, consider using pebblecrete on the pool surface, which offers a more natural f nish than tiling.
