    Smart Dust Overview

Merger of Computers, Mechanics andelectrics with miniaturizationtechnology

Its core is small, low power Computer This Computer monitors the sensors

    embedded in the same chip

Uses RF link for communicating andtransmitting necessary informationalong with MEMS embedded in thesame chip

    Components & Specifications

A small, low power computer, with a

operating system called Tiny OS. Sensors

    Battery

Reflectors and transmitters forreflecting the laser beams

And other as per requirements of the

    dust

    Smart Dust Working

    Motes are run by Microcontrollers

Microcontrollers takes the readingfrom the sensors, processes it and

stores it It uses optical receiver to receive the

    messages from other motes

It uses corner cube retro reflector orLaser to transmit sensor data to

    other motes

    Smart Dust working

The batteries are the basic poweringdevices in the motes

The motes are in sleep mode most of

the time with a little consumption of afew micro amps

Counters and timers periodicallytrigger on the sensors which take the

readings, micro-controller transmitsthem, stores them and the mode againgoes to the sleep mode

    Applications

    Military

    Smart Office Spaces

    Environmental Applications

    Diagnosis of Human Problems

    Security Purposes

    Conservation of resources

    And many more..

    Smart Military Operations

Can be used to sense enemymovements

They can help to collect battlefield

intelligence Can be proved as a weapon against

    bioterrorism

Can be proved as brilliant spies

    Smart Environment

Can be used as seismic sensors Can be sewn in clothes to sense the

working environment and change in it,

so that the user can get better off it Can be used to identify the pollutants

    present in the environment

Can make our life better by sensingthese elements

    Smart Medication

Can assist a Handicap person aboutthe paths

Can assist in detecting and destroying

tumor cells in the body Can help to identify Various type of

diseases for whom the definitions are

not yet given by defining them in thetiny OS and matching them

    AD-HOC networks

Smart dust can be used to form Ad-hoc networks, which can use radio linkto transmit data

These ad-hoc networks can be usedin various fields where normal linksare not possible

Ad- hoc networks can be muchcheaper than usual modes of certainapplications

    Future Goal

In march 2003, thismote named Spec wasmade in which all thecontents of a mote

were fitted in less than5 Sq mm, in less thana dollar. We canimagine motes to be

    as small as DustParticles.

    Future Goals

    Weather/seismological monitoring

    Internal spacecraft monitoring

    Land/space comm. networks

    Chemical/biological sensors

    Weapons stockpile monitoring

    Defense-related sensor networks
