ROLLS-ROYCE repeatedlyfailed to identify a defect inan oil pipe that caused one ofits engines to explode in aQantas Airways aircraftcarrying more than 400people over Indonesia in2010, an Australian safetyregulator found.

In its final report on theincident, the AustralianSafety Transport Bureau(ASTB) said the companymissed multiple opportunitiesto detect the faultycomponent, which almostcertainly would have causedthe Airbus A380 to crash hadit not been for theexceptional skill of the pilots.

It was the first major safetyscare to affect the A380, andled to Qantas suspending itsoperation of the aircraft forthree weeks.

The ASTB report couldlead to broader requirementsfor new aircraft certificationaround the world.

Those opportunities weremissed for a number ofreasons, but generally due toambiguities within themanufacturers proceduresand the non-adherence by anumber of the manufacturingstaff to those procedures, thereport said yesterday.

The four-engine A380 wasflying from Singapore toSydney with 433 passengersand 26 crew on board whenone of its engines blew up,spraying shrapnel anddropping chunks of debris onBatam island.

The pilots skill likelyaverted a disaster as the planehad suffered a series ofsystem problems. They flewthe plane back to Singaporeand landed with limitedcontrols, stopping 150mbefore the end of the runwaywith four blown tyres, brakesheated to 900 deg C and fuelleaking to the ground.REUTERS

MALAYSIA and In-donesia agreed towork together tofind a permanent

solution to the haze problem, Ber-nama reported yesterday.

Malaysia has expressed thehope that government officialsfrom both countries could workconstantly in monitoring andchecking the hot spots, especiallyduring the dry season, to preventforest and peat fires which con-tribute to the haze problem, Nat-ural Resources and EnvironmentMinister G. Palanivel told report-

ers after meeting Indonesian Envi-ronment Minister Balthasar Kam-buaya.

Datuk Seri Palanivel also hand-ed Dr Kambuaya a letter from Ma-laysian Prime Minister Najib Ra-zak for Indonesian President Susi-lo Bambang Yudhoyono.

After meeting his Indonesiancounterpart in Jakarta, Mr Pal-anivel urged Indonesia to ratify akey South-east Asian treatyaimed at tackling the haze.

The Environment Minister hasto deal with this ratification, hesaid. If they can ratify the treaty, then they can go forward.

    The Asean agreement is aimed

at tackling the annual outbreaksof haze by increasing regional co-operation.

It was struck in 2002 followingSouth-east Asias worst haze cri-sis in 1997 and 1998, which wasestimated to have cost the regionUS$9 billion.

But while the Asean deal isprincipally aimed at stoppinghaze that comes from forest andslash-and-burn fires in Indonesia,Jakarta is the only member of the10-country bloc yet to ratify it.

Dr Kambuaya said yesterdaythat Indonesia was in the pro-cess of ratifying the treaty.

Mr Palanivel said that a meet-

ing between five Asean memberson the haze scheduled for Augustwould be brought forward to July17 due to the current crisis.

Thousands are tackling thefires, which are centred in Sumat-ras Riau province. The blazeseased on Wednesday after heavyrainfall.

The skies in Singapore arenow clear, thanks to rain and fa-vourable winds. In Malaysia, thehaze has eased dramatically asrain fell in many areas after thehaze hit hazardous levels in re-cent days.

    P a l l s o f s m o k e f r o mslash-and-burn agricultural fires

FROM packing masksin schoolbags to com-ing up with contingen-cy plans to keep their

children at home, parents in Sin-gapore have been preparing forthe new school term in the lightof the haze crisis.

On Wednesday, Environmentand Water Resources MinisterVivian Balakrishnan said that itshould be safe for schools to re-open on Monday, if the PollutantStandards Index (PSI) remains inthe moderate range.

Still, some parents My Paperspoke to yesterday expressed con-cern about their childrens healthduring the upcoming school termand said they would keep kids athome if PSI levels are too high.

Ms Angeline Chan who hasone son in Primary 1 and anotherin Kindergarten 1 said that ifthe PSI reaches about 250, whichis in the middle of the unhealthy

range, she will consider ground-ing her kids at home.

Im quite worried. The schoolis (an) open-air (environment)and doesnt have air-condition-ing, said the 41-year-old manag-er of a manufacturing firm.

Ms Christine Ting, 46 whohas a son, 14, and two daughters,12 and seven said she will bewatching the PSI, even thoughshe feels the PSI readings some-times do not reflect the immedi-ate situation.

The senior executive of a hu-

man-resource consultancy is par-ticularly worried about her young-er children, as they are of an agewhere they are more susceptibleto...infections.

Mr Jonathan Lau, 37, who hastwin daughters in Primary 1, said:If it reaches the point wherethey have to wear masks in theclassroom, we will take them outof school.

Besides tracking the PSI read-ing, he will be watching thePM2.5 reading, which measuresfine particulate matter 2.5 mi-

crons in size or smaller. PM2.5particles are said to be more dan-gerous to a persons health thanlarger particles.

Mr Lau, a banker, said he willbe monitoring both readings, ashis twins are asthmatic.

The Ministry of Education(MOE) said on Wednesday that itis monitoring the haze situationclosely. An MOE spokesman saidthe ministry will take referencefrom the health advisories andwork closely with schools to putin place appropriate measures toensure the well-being of our stu-dents and staff.

Ms Chan hoped schools wouldcut down on physical-educationlessons during this hazy period.Children should be encouraged todrink more water and teachersshould take note of which kidsare asthmatic, she added.

If there is an urgent need to closeschools,Ms Chan said that an air-con-ditioned area, like a library, could bea holding area for children before

their parents can pick them up.Mr Lau hopes schools will also

provide some form of e-learning,so pupils can keep up with the syl-labus at home if schools are shut.

Today, the 24-hour PSI is ex-pected to be in the moderaterange, although PM2.5 levels con-tinue to be slightly elevated, ac-cording to the National Environ-ment Agency.

EVEN as the Government rolledout a call for proposals yesterdayto rope in private-sector schoolsfor an anchor operator (AOP)grant scheme, some parents wereworried that it would mean high-er pre-school and childcare feesfor their kids.

This is more so as somebrand-name private pre-schools,which can charge above $1,000 amonth, have expressed interest inapplying to be an AOP.

Said businessman E. Ooi, 43, afather of two kids aged three andfour: Not everyone can affordhigh (fees). Education should beaffordable because it moulds ourchildrens futures.

But the Government has as-sured that there will be safeguards.

Currently, there are twoAOPs: PAP Community Founda-tion (PCF) and the NationalTrades Union Congress My FirstSkool. They are tasked with pro-viding good-quality and afforda-ble programmes. In return, theyget recurrent grants from the Gov-ernment to lower operating costs.

More AOPs are being intro-duced to cater to the needs of thediverse learning habits ofpre-schoolers, said Mr ChanChun Sing, Acting Minister for So-cial and Family Development, ata media briefing yesterday.

For yesterdays call for propos-als, commercial pre-school opera-tors can apply to be an AOP ifthey set up a distinct company toensure that the funds will be usedto benefit needy children, insteadof boosting the operators profits, among other criteria.

New fee caps will be in place, which current and new AOPshave to adhere to.

For instance, pre-school feeswill be capped at $160 a month.Currently, AOPs monthly feesrange from $48 to $350, whilethat for the pre-school sector ingeneral is from $80 to $1,750.

On commercial pre-school op-erators using public funds, MrChan said: Money cannot betheir primary goal. Their socialmission must be their primarygoal.

Mrs Ng Gim Choo, group man-aging director of EtonHouse Inter-national, said that the subsidieswill help lower operation costs aswell as fees.

A PCF spokesman said thatwith more AOPs coming onboard, it will allow more opera-tors to do what we are doing byway of keeping childcare and kin-dergarten fees affordable.

Families will benefit as choic-es (will be) wider, she said.

A bid for one Kitty evenreached $126,000, although itis uncertain if the bid was genu-ine.

The seller, who started theauction below $10, said on thetoys auction page that biddersshould contact him on his mo-bile phone as there were fakeeBay accounts set up to out-bid sincere buyers, notingthat such incidents had oc-curred before.

McDonalds said on Face-book that it doesnt supportpeople buying the Kitties for re-sale, and regularly removesposts offering such servicesfrom its Facebook page.

The fast-food chain added itwill not hesitate to take appro-priate action against its staff ifany of them are found tohave misappropriated the Kit-ties for personal gain.

The queues at some outletswere said to have been so longthat McDonalds staff had tocurb the lines due to a limitedplushie supply. Only patrons in

the queue were issued couponsto buy the toys.

A McDonalds spokesmansaid the coupons served asqueue tickets so that custom-ers do not have to queue whenthere are no more Kitties left.

There were reports and on-line videos of people arguingover queue jumping and policeofficers being called in.

One such incident occurredat a McDonalds outlet in BukitBatok Central. A police spokes-man confirmed the dispute. Headded that the police advisedthe parties accordingly and nofurther assistance was re-quired.

Chinas president, Mr Xi Jin-ping, welcomed his South Ko-rean counterpart yesterday asan old friend of China, andagreed to make a push for newtalks with North Korea as twoof Asias newest leaders metfor the first time.

Ms Park arrived in Beijingyesterday with the biggest busi-ness delegation to join a SouthKorean leaders state visit, sig-nalling the importance sheputs on China in boosting hernations economic fortunes.

She is set to make a speechat Tsinghua University, whichis expected to be delivered inMandarin.

Ms Park is an admirer ofChinese culture and her fa-vourite book is History Of Chi-nese Philosophy by Feng You-lan, a renowned Chinesephilosopher, according to me-dia reports.

China is South Koreas lead-ing trading partner, and SouthKorean imports to China over-took those from Japan last Sep-tember, according to DBSBank.

However, the strategic sideof the partnership has alwaysbeen coloured by the issue ofNorth Korea and stagnated un-der Ms Parks predecessor, MrLee Myung Bak, who focusedhis efforts on boosting Seoulsalliance with Washington.

The hopes of a reboot havebeen bolstered by the fact that

Dr Fang Xiuyu, a professorof Korean Studies at FudanUniversity in Shanghai, said:Ms Park likes reading Chi-nese books and understandsChinese. Her vision is very sim-ilar to Mr Xis. They have lotsof shared ideas about coopera-tion in East Asia.

    MANILA

THE Philippines saidyesterday it was look-ing to give the UnitedStates and Japan

greater access to its militarybases, as it seeks to counter whatit perceives as a rising securitythreat from China.

The government was initiallydrafting a plan that would allowUS forces to spend more time onFilipino bases, something thatcould also be offered to Japansmilitary later, Defence SecretaryVoltaire Gazmin said.

If and when there is agree-ment on the access, then therewill be equipment coming in fromthe US, Mr Gazmin told a jointnews conference in Manila aftermeeting visiting Japan DefenceMinister Itsunori Onodera.

Now, as far as Japan is con-cerned, we do welcome othercountries particularly Japansince it is a strategic partner inaccordance with our existing pro-tocols.

    President Benigno Aquino had

already stated that the Philip-pines would welcome an in-creased US military presence, amid tense disputes with Chinaover competing claims to parts ofthe South China Sea.

However, Mr Gazmins com-ments indicated that the Philip-pines was hoping to expand onthe standard military exercisesthat the two nations armed forc-es regularly engage in.

Modalities for increased rota-tional presence are right now be-ing examined. One modality isthe conduct of high-value,high-impact exercise, he said, without elaborating.

However, he emphasised theplan would not see any new basesor a permanent US presence inthe Philippines.

Japan and the Philippines, who both share a rival claimant inChina, stepped up their strategicpartnership in the field of de-fence, particularly in maritime af-fairs, after defence ministers ofboth countries met at CampAguinaldo.

Mr Onodera and Mr Gazminmet at the Department of Nation-

al Defence Headquarters formore than an hour, where theydiscussed the strengthening of de-fence cooperation and issues theywere both facing.

Mr Onodera emphasised thatthey were very concerned withthe Philippines situation in theSouth China Sea, and supportedits position that the territorial dis-pute be solved through interna-tional arbitration and not throughthe use of force.

When asked about the Philip-pines plan, the Chinese ForeignMinistry urged its neighbours topush for peace.

Ministry spokesman HuaChunying told reporters: Chinaurges the Philippines and regionalcountries to meet one anotherhalfway, make joint efforts tomaintain mutual trust betweencountries, make positive effortstowards regional peace and securi-ty, and play a constructive role.

The US had tens of thousandsof troops stationed in the Philip-pines, at the Clark Air Base andSubic Naval Base north of Ma-nila, until the early 1990s.

The US, a former colonial rul-

er of the Philippines, was forcedto abandon the bases amid an-ti-US sentiment and a row overrent. The Constitution now bansany permanent foreign bases inthe Philippines.

However, the Clark and Subicfacilities, now partly convertedfor business use, still host and ser-vice US military aircraft and war-ships on short-term exercises.

IKEA billionaire Ingvar Kam-prad, Europes richest person, said he will move back to Swe-den, a country he fled four dec-ades ago to avoid high tax rates.

Mr Kamprads US$51.7-bil-lion (S$66-billion) fortune makeshim the fourth-wealthiest individ-ual in the world, according to theBloomberg Billionaires Index.

The 87-year-old controls Ikea, the worlds largest furniture retail-er, through a series of trusts andfoundations.

He left his homeland of Swe-den for Switzerland in 1973 in aneffort to keep Ikea closely held, something he said he could not dowith the tax regime in Sweden atthe time, according to foundationspokesman Per Heggenes.

Moving back to Sweden getsme closer to my family and my

old friends, Mr Kamprad said ina statement to Radio Sweden andnewspapers in the country.

After my dear wife, Marga-retha, died about 11/2 years ago, there was (not much) keeping mein Switzerland.

Ikano Group, the Kampradfamilys investment vehicle, man-ages four Ikea franchises, a cred-it-card business and real-estate in-vestments.

Mr Heggenes told Radio Swe-den: (Mr Kamprad) will pay tax-es on his earnings, just like all oth-er Swedes. But the move homehas no other tax-related conse-quences.

Mr Kamprad is US$1.5 billionahead of Mr Amancio Ortega,Spains richest man. The77-year-old owns 59 per cent ofInditex, the worlds largest cloth-ing retailer and parent companyof clothing line Zara.

MYANMAR yester-day awarded tele-com licences toNorways Tel-

enor and Qatari firm Ooredoo, the government committee incharge of the bids said, openingup one of the worlds last virtual-ly untapped mobile-phone mar-kets.

The committee is pleased toannounce that Telenor MobileCommunications and Ooredoohave been selected as the two suc-cessful applicants, from the 11global consortiums remaining ona shortlist, it said in the state-ment.

    SingTel, billionaire George So-

ros and France Telecom wereamong the bidding groups.

Its a tremendous growthopportunity, but it will require afair bit of investment, and returnswill be long-dated too, said MrSachin Gupta, a Singapore-basedanalyst at Nomura Holdings.

I dont think its going to bean easy exercise for anyone, buthaving previous green-field expe-rience and strong local partner-ship should help.

The licences are among the big-gest prizes for foreign companiessince Myanmar President TheinSein moved to allow greater polit-ical and economic freedom aftertaking power in 2011.

The United States and Europe-an Union have moved to easesanctions, attracting companies

such as Coca-Cola and Ford Mo-tor to the former military-runstate even as human-rightsgroups warn of abuses against eth-nic and religious minorities.

The government proceededwith naming the winners even af-ter parliamentarians moved to de-lay the announcement, Mr SetAung, deputy minister of nationalplanning and economic develop-ment, who is overseeing the pro-cess, said by phone yesterday.

He said before that announce-ment that, while he would preferlocal companies, the process com-plied with international practices.

The playing field should belevel, he said. We, the techni-cal team, arent biased in the se-lection of the winners.

    Myanmar plans to boost

telecom coverage to as much as80 per cent of the country by2016.

Winners of the tender mustlaunch their services within ninemonths of the licence being grant-ed, and install a network to covera quarter of the country within ayear, and three quarters withinfive years.

One bidder has estimated therequired spending to develop aMyanmar network at about US$2billion (S$2.5 billion).

I t has a mobile-phonepenetration rate of 9 per cent, compared to 70 per cent in Cam-bodia, 87 per cent in Laos andmore than 100 per cent in Thai-land, the Communication Minis-try said in January.

I have never seen any inves-

tors who are not coming to a coun-try before everything is perfect,Mr Set Aung said.

All the companies under-stand there are risks. Some com-panies probably think there is toomuch risk, and other companiesthink its a calculated risk.

    BADGES OF FURY (PG)Action comedy/98 minutesRating: 2/5

ONE might expect ahigh-octane cop thrill-er with the casting ofJet Li and a title like

Badges Of Fury. But this film is hardly about

the legendary action star, whotakes on the role of Huang FeiHong not the gongfu master, but a seasoned and jaded cop.

In fact, the veteran actor playssecond fiddle to his younger part-ner, the overenthusiastic, fum-bling Wang Bu Er (played by Chi-nas Wen Zhang).

In this film, the 28-year-oldWen has a whole lot more screen-time than the 50-year-old Li, whoseems content to languish in thebackground, making his presencefelt sporadically with quirky dia-logues and fights.

The crime-fighting duo arebossed around by their female su-pervisor, Angela (played by Tai-wans Michelle Chen).

The movie is really a hugehare-brained comedy, right fromthe premise of the plot.

The trio are tasked to trackdown a serial killer with an unusu-al modus operandi that leaves hisvictims smiling.

The investigation leads to as-piring actress Jinshui (played byChinas Liu Shishi of mega China

drama Scarlet Heart fame), aprime suspect who has dated allthe victims.

Theres more than meets theeye to this case, especially whenJinshuis buxomy stepsister, DaiYi Yi (played by Chinas Liu Yan)appears.

The sexy anchorman-turned-actress is clearly there to

draw the eyeballs with her cleav-age-bearing attire.

The movie goes off on a tan-gent, with fight scenes pepperedwith over-the-top special effects.

Its a waste not showing off thereal deal. Li puts up a pretty excit-ing fight in the final brawl, but hisfinishing blow is, sadly, CGI-as-sisted.

While its refreshing to see theusually-stoic Li in a funny role,Wen is the one with comedic po-tential.

The latter has no qualms ham-ming it up for the camera flash-ing his underwear and donning amini kilt.

Audiences can play a game ofspot the stars, thanks to a stringof actors making cameo appearanc-es, such as Hong Kong stars Ray-mond Lam and Michael Tse, andChinese actor Huang Xiao Ming.

The film squeezes in too manyelements, leaving one bewilderedby the numerous A-list actors andtropes of the crime, romance, ac-tion and comedy genres.

At the end of the day, Im nottoo sure what the movie is, but Ido know it aint a Jet Li movie.

TWO cops are forcedto work together. Onecop, Sarah Ashburn(Sandra Bullock), is afastidious martinetwho is lonely; theother, ShannonMullins (MelissaMcCarthy), is an instinct-driven, street-smart slob who is angryat not getting the professional respect she deserves.

Together, they chase down a criminal mastermind, learninglife lessons along the way mostly that it is wrong to judge abook by its cover.

What is surprising about this flat, uninteresting work is thatdirector Paul Feig, who helmed the very funny and smartfemale-driven Bridesmaids (2011), is behind it.

The film is indeed as dull and by-the-numbers as the trailersuggests.

FOUR dreamers meetby chance. Each timeChoocha (VarunSharma) has a dream,Hunny (Pulkit Samrat)interprets it, beforeconverting it intonumbers to buy sure-win lottery tickets.

They go on a roll and decide to set their sights even higher. As Choocha and Hunny plot ways to strike the biggest lottery,Zafar (Ali Fazal), a struggling musician, and Lali (Manjot Singh)become their partners in crime.

Witty and stir-crazy, Fukrey is a cracker of a film whichmade me laugh so hard, my children who were with me havevowed not to watch a Bollywood comedy with me again.

HIGH-SCHOOLstudent Kyosuke(Ryohei Suzuki)discovers that he hassuperhuman powers when he wears a pair of panties on his face.

To protect Aiko (Fumika Shimizu), whom he has a crushon, he has to defeat a creepy teacher (Ken Yasuda).

It helps that director Yuichi Fukuda fully embraces theB-grade bizarreness of the material.

Even as Kyosukes hormones and imagination run amok, his burgeoning romance with Aiko is cutely chaste andawkward.

It turns out Hentai Kamen is as much about the power oflove as it is about the power of perversion.

Ask Libby is a collaborationbetween Stomp and Public Librar-ies Singapore, whose librarians re-search and provide answers to adiverse range of questions.

Here is this weeks question:Do electronic devices really inter-fere with a planes navigation sys-tem?

There is no conclusive evi-dence to support the theory thatelectronic devices interfere with aplanes navigation system, as it isdifficult to verify or test suchclaims.

The use of cell phones and de-vices that transmit radio wavesare prohibited during a flight.

Other electronic devices canbe used once a plane reaches acruising altitude above 3,000m.

Airlines adopt such restric-tions as a precaution, to preventsignals from electronic devices in-terfering with air-traffic communi-cations and disrupting navigationreadings.

As passengers tend to bring avariety of electronic devices withthem and airlines are unable totell exactly which one will causeproblems the restrictions areneeded.

IF YOU think men in Singa-pore are boring and unro-mantic, you couldnt bemore wrong.

F rom f la sh mobs andsong-and-dance routines to heart-warming video tributes, somemen are pulling out all the stopswhen asking their girlfriends tomarry them.

These romantic gestures haveinspired many people on citi-zen-journalism website Stomp.

Stomper Serena, 25, was im-pressed by the efforts that a guyput in to propose to his girlfriendat Marina Barrage. The lucky girlhappened to be her friend, Apple.

Serena, a real-estate agent, said: I want to share with othersthat its not about how much mon-ey you spend on the proposal, butthe sincerity and efforts put in.

She said the guy, Wesley, tooktwo months to plan the proposal.

On that day, Wesley got onegroup of friends to distract Applewhile he prepared the props forhis proposal with another group.

    When Apple arrived at Marina

Barrage, she thought that she waswitnessing someone elses propos-al. She was shocked when she re-alised she was the star.

Wesleys friends held upglow-in-the-dark signs as nightfell that day.

Other men in Singapore arepulling off elaborate proposals byroping in friends and family mem-bers.

In one case, a local media com-pany was hired to produce a shortvideo that was played in a cinemaas a prelude to the proposal.

In the video produced byMoomedia, a young man namedMalcolm was seen asking familymembers, relatives and friends

for reasons his girlfriend Graceshould marry him.

When he asked her parents forGraces hand in marriage, hermother squealed in delight andembraced her future son-in-law.

Malcolm got a yes fromGrace in the cinema filled withfamily members and friends.

Another memorable proposalinvolved a huge group of peopleat the Singapore Flyer.

It kicked off with a flash mob.The man, Aaron, danced to sever-al songs before giving a movingspeech about his girlfriend Tracy.

The proposal saw Tracy withtears of happiness and had thecrowd cheering.

The most unlikely place tomake a proposal has to be onboard a ship at Changi NavalBase. But that was exactly wherea Navy serviceman proposed tohis girlfriend.

Stomper Spider found a photoof the proposal on Facebook, with the caption: Great last dayof Navy Open House. Endingwith one of our very own propos-ing to his girlfriend out at sea.Great support from the crew ofthe RSS Vengeance/Valour tomake the impossible happen!Well done!

MICROSOFT released a testversion of its Windows8.1 software on Wednes-day, bringing back the

start button and adding a host of fea-tures it hopes will appeal to users, whilespurring developers to write more applica-tions for it.

The updated Windows is aimed chieflyat appeasing traditional computer users, many of whom were unsettled by Micro-softs move towards a new tile-based inter-face that works best on touch-enabled de-vices, but left fans of the old-style desktopconfused.

After looking at user feedback, saidchief executive Michael Ballmer, Win-dows 8.1 will see the reinstatement of thestart button, with easier ways to findand access applications, along with a great-ly improved search function.

Mr Ballmer also promised a rapid re-lease cycle for Windows in the future, abandoning its policy of making new ver-sions of Windows every three years, in aneffort to match Apple and Google.

The response from the thousands of de-velopers at Microsofts annual developerconference in San Francisco was broadlypositive.

Of course, theyre playing somecatch-up (with Apple and Google). Theyhave been lagging behind for years now, said Mr Jorgen Nilsson, a manager at Brit-ish-based Aveva, a firm that makes com-puter-aided-design software applications.

But this release is driving it forward in-stead of (just) catching up, and making itwork for business and personal use. This islooking really good now.

Part of Microsofts problem has beenpersuading developers to create apps forWindows 8 and the little-used WindowsPhone, given that almost all smartphoneand tablet owners are using Apples iOSor Googles Android.

Microsoft also said that Facebook has fi-nally agreed to work on an app especiallyfor Windows, which should be availablethis autumn. That is one factor that mighthelp attract the more than one billion Face-book users to Windows-based tablets.

I feel like Microsoft can actually seri-ously compete in the mobile ecosystem

now, said Mr Manav Mishra, director ofengineering at the Barnes & Noble unitthat makes apps for its Nook e-reader.

But not all developers are convincedthat Windows or Windows Phone areworth the trouble, given the massivebuilt-in audience using iPhones, iPads andAndroid devices.

I havent really considered it, no,said Mr Sam Redfern of Psychic Software, maker of the Lets Break Stuff! game, available on Android, iOS and even theBlackBerry PlayBook, when asked aboutdeveloping for Windows.

It never seemed like a particularlyworthwhile undertaking, in terms of po-tential revenue.

Mr Markus Persson, developer at Mo-jang, whose Minecraft Pocket Edition isa top seller on both iOS and Android, agreed, saying that Microsofts marketwas too tiny. Both Symbian and Black-Berry have more users than WindowsPhone.

Mr Ballmer said that the WindowsStore was approaching 100,000 apps. Ap-ples is nearing one million, with Androidnot far behind.

SOUTH Koreas largest mobile operator isthis week launching what it says is theworlds fastest wireless network.

SK Telecom said on Wednesday thatthe LTE-Advanced network enables down-loading of data at speeds twice as fast asthose of LTE networks, and 10 times fast-er than 3G services.

With a transfer rate of 150 mbps, thenetwork can download an 800-MB moviein just 43 seconds.

The service will initially be available inSeoul and its suburbs.

South Korea has witnessed rapidgrowth of the 4G LTE, or Long Term Evo-lution, service as the countrys mo-bile-phone users are quick to adopt fasterwireless technology.

More than 60 per cent of South Koreas33 million smartphone users have sub-scribed to the LTE service.

GSA, an association of network suppli-ers, projected that LTE networks will beavailable in 87 countries by the end of theyear.

Along with the launch of the new mo-bile technology, SK Telecom has begunselling the Galaxy S4 LTE-A smartphonemade by Samsung Electronics, which canrun on the fastest network.

Still, the LTE-Advanced technologyhas room for improvement. While itboasts the fastest download speed, its up-load speed is the same as that of LTE net-works, at 37.5 mbps.

MEN ask their wives and girl-friends all sorts of things.

The one thing one doesnt hearoften is this: Honey, can I bor-row your make-up?

But, if recent evidence is anyindication, it may soon be.

In a study of the grooming hab-its of 1,800 British men aged 18and over, approximately one in10 said they wear make-up. Ofthose, one in five wears make-upevery day.

Concealer was the most popu-lar make-up item, which 71 percent of those who wear make-upadmitted to using. Other popularmake-up items were eyeliner andlip gloss.

British men are not alone. Sev-eral articles about the growingpopularity of make-up amongmen in South Korea have beenpublished recently. Even SouthKoreas largest airline, KoreanAir, has started providingmake-up lessons for its maleflight attendants.

In fact, men around the globeare spending billions of dollars on

everything from cosmetics andmake-up to clothing and plas-tic surgery. In South Koreaalone, men are spending over1 trillion won (S$1.1 billion)on grooming products annual-ly, according to EuromonitorInternational.

It has also been found thatsome men spend more timeeach day on personal groom-ing than women.

A 2010 study of Britishadults grooming habits foundthat the men surveyed spent83 minutes a day on personalgrooming, including cleansing, toning, moisturising, shaving, choosing clothes and stylinghair. In contrast, the womensurveyed spent 79 minutes.

That means some Britishmen spend four times longeron grooming than they do hav-ing sex each week.

And, contrary to popularbelief, men are just as unhap-py with their appearance aswomen, and in some casesmore unhappy, according to re-cent research.

Therell be no rest forHeavenly King AaronKwok this year.

Before the 47-year-oldsinger-actor whorecently starred inChristmas Rose and ColdWar, and was at the

recent Shanghai FilmFestival gets a realbreak, hell be jet-settingaround Asia to promotehis upcoming movies,The Monkey King andSilent Witness.

He spoke of his plansafter this hectic period.

Your friend, CharlieYoung, made herdirectorial debut recentlywith Christmas Rose. When will it be your turn?In 2008, I met director Roy Chowwhile filming Murderer and he gaveme a lot of pointers, which made methink that, perhaps some day, I couldbe a director too.

But, because of my schedule concert tours, movies, motor racing Im really just too busy (to direct).

This year, my focus is onmovies. Id really like to do amusical too. Ill just see whichopportunity comes up first.

If you could choose a typeof character to portray ina movie, what would itbe?Id like to be a race-car driver or ahorse-racing jockey. These are thetwo hobbies that I enjoy in my freetime.

Will there be a part threeto your De ShowyMasquerade World Tourconcert? If time allows, yes, I do hope to haveanother touring concert.

Ive already done parts one andtwo of the tour. I personally feel therecan be a conclusion to it.

But it depends whether mymanagement agrees.

Is there another image ofyourself that youd like toshow your fans?As a racer, because racing is also aprofession.

I rarely have time to do my partfor charity, so participating in charityracing events is a good opportunity todo my part to help the needy.

In 2000, I set up the Aaron KwokInternational Charity Fund to helpneedy children. I was also appointedUnicef Regional Ambassador for theEast Asia and Pacific region in 2011.

So no matter how busy workgets, I have this responsibility and Ihope to raise more funds for thesechildren. This is also anotherlong-term job that I have.

Do you prefer to act in

dramas or action movies?I think one must always try to excel,be it a concert or a movie. (And) Imust do something that Ive neverdone before.

The reason I love to do movies isthat I can walk in the same footstepsas the characters that I play.

Every work to me must be animprovement, because I must alwaysfind ways to give meaning to my life.

And movies have the ability to dothat.
