frameXpress Ltd enjoyed very positive trading figures through 2014 which has led to the senior management team investing heavily in new machinery, bigger premises and a larger team.

As one of the UK’s most well established and well recognised fabricators, the company has instigated this extensive development programme to accommodate increase in demand for the entire product range and to streamline production.

Investment in new machinery totalling approximately £1m as well as expansion and refurbishment of the 35,000 sq. ft factory, enables the company now to produce over 1000 windows every week.

This is the latest in a number of substantial investment programmes that have been initiated by senior management over the last few years due to the company’s steady growth, and there is more promised for customers. Already, these developments have helped to strengthen the frameXpress brand throughout the industry in respect of quality, durability and performance.

FrameXpress Ltd has an extensive portfolio which incorporates PVC-u Windows, Doors and Conservatories, with “A” rated windows manufactured as standard in a variety of PVC-u from Profile 22 Systems. Composite Doors, Biflold doors and Aluminium products add to the comprehensive range available.

Directors Mark Westbrook and Stuart Green have over 55 years combined experience in the window industry which has established the company as the success it is today.

After major investment in machinery from Winmac UK Ltd, which includes a new SCHIRMER BAZ-1000-G6-VU2-VO “Tandem” Cutting and Machining Centre that is recognised as one of the fastest and most accurate machines of its type on the market, the company is set to further raise the benchmark. Two new ROTOX SMK 505 In-Line Five and Four Head Welders, were also installed along with an SEK701 Butt Welder and an LA 396PC Electronic Measuring system for Bead Measuring.

This equipment complements 3 other ROTOX CNC Corner Cleaners, a Crucifix Welder and a Quad Welder already installed at the company. frameXpress is now set to reinforce its corporate position with a 61 strong team and national delivery fleet which underpins the corporate ethos of providing premium quality standards and customer satisfaction.

Mark Westbrook, Managing Director comments: “Since the equipment has been installed we have seen faster manufacturing speeds and greater accuracy. I wish we had made this investment with Winmac UK years ago. Their overall support and technical advice during installation demonstrates why this is a positive Partnership.”

At times when many companies have struggled to maintain positive trading results, frameXpress has sustained a strong corporate position. More recently, this has been validated further by the team being bolstered. Recruitment and internal restructuring has been initiated recently with the establishment of a number of key

middle management positions to reinforce customer services Ian Davis, Sales Director comments “frameXpress has a notable reputation for high quality standards and a progressive approach to the industry with the entire portfolio proving very popular. Bolstering the team as well as expanding facilities gives us even greater scope for development.”Stuart Green, Managing Director concludes, “Expansion is an essential aspect of growth which enables us to provide customers with fast and efficient services. By investing

in modern equipment we can provide faster turnarounds that our customers can rely upon.”Sales Director of Winmac UK, Kevin Noray, says: “it has been a pleasure to work with all of the team at FrameXpress and to be part of their success. I am sure that there will be more improvements over the coming years as they strive to remain – “ahead of the game.” “For more information on the products available in the frameXpress portfolio please call 01952 581100 or visit www.frameXpress.co.uk.

A market survey has found that following a log period of decline, the UK conservatory market has started to show signs of recoveringThe report from AMA* showed that the market was estimated to be worth around £620 million at the end of 2014. Two factors have contributed to the improvement; a combination of a recovery in the economy in general and the housing market in particular. Both helped underpin rising consumer confidence and spending on higher value home improvements, especially with interest rates so low. The report shows that in recent times the market has become more sophisticated in terms of product range and offers more options for a bespoke project. Options now include conservatories, glazed extensions which might have a solid or a glass roof, orangeries, verandas, loggias etc. Key product features that have become more important in the conservatory market include improved thermal efficiency, high specification self-cleaning glass, coloured frames, bi-fold opening doors etc. In terms of frame materials, PVC-U continues to dominate, but timber has a reasonable share and has retained its attraction for many homeowners due to its natural appearance and sustainability credentials. Aluminium remains a more expensive option and while it has retained a niche share in the domestic market, aluminium bi-fold doors have gained widespread consumer acceptance. Key suppliers are a mix of national retail brands, local suppliers and specialist conservatory installers. However, in broad terms, the supply structure for conservatories remains very complex and fragmented, reflecting the structure of the replacement window market. Two leading players, namely Synseal and Ultraframe, both of which expanded in recent years, mainly but not entirely, through acquisition,

dominate the conservatory roof systems sector. The report believes that consolidation is likely to remain a feature of the conservatory market, though a trend to more bespoke installations provides opportunities for local companies. In the next three years, recovery in the market should lead to a modest expansion. The market for conservatories and glazed extensions in the UK is forecast to see relatively buoyant rates of growth in the medium term, and is expected to reach a value of over £760 million in 2018There is one factor that may deal a blow to the recent improvement. Market growth will only be possible if the UK economy sees sustained growth, alongside improvements in the house moving market, disposable incomes, and consumer confidence. “In the longer term, our forecasts indicate steady growth, but we do not expect to see a return to the peak volumes achieved in the early-mid 2000s,” explained Andrew Hartley, Director, AMA Research. “However, work on existing conservatories will become a more important part of the conservatory/glazed installation market in the UK in the coming years, as more homeowners either replace or upgrade older models.”

An investigation into the death of a worker installing guttering at a home

in Llandudno found he was using an unsafe ladder

Gethin Kirwan, 35, who lived in Hoole, Chester, was working at a property in

Llanrhos Road on 4 April 2013 when he fell from the ladder, sustaining a fatal

head injury.Thomas Price, who runs a roofline products’ business, employed Mr Kirwan to carry out the work and

was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) at Wrexham

Magistrates’ Court this month.HSE’s investigation found that the

ladder provided by Mr Price was in an extremely poor state. Although

HSE accepted the ladder was not responsible for Mr Kirwan’s fall, it did

have a number of serious safety defects which had the potential to cause

serious incidents. Two other ladders provided for use on the job had similar

critical defects.HSE found the feet of the ladder were

worn through, rungs were bent and one was missing. The defects were

obvious through even a cursory inspection and made the ladder unfit

for use.Thomas Price, of Marnel Drive, Pentre,

Deeside pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 5(1) of the Provision and Use

of Work Equipment Regulations and was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay

£4,000 in costs. The court also granted a Forfeiture & Destruction Order for the

ladders.“Although Mr Kirwan’s death was not

attributable to the ladder it was in an appalling state and should never have been used,” stated Chris Wilcox Inspector, HSE. “All work equipment

must be maintained in a safe condition for use and checked regularly for any

damage. For ladders, a quick and simple visual check should be done to look for

any obvious defects. The most common and critical issues are worn or missing

feet and damage to the rungs and stiles which are very easy to spot.”

The Glenigan Index for February, which covers the value of projects starting on site in the three months to January, is 2% down on a year ago.

Although there was a significant decline of 17% in new civil engineering schemes, falling levels of social housing and public nonresidential building have contributed to a subdued performance across the industry, Glenigan notes that none of the main sectors expanded by more than 1% in the latest period. It points to investor confidence and the flow of new developments remaining strong, with a 10% rise in the value of projects achieving detailed planning consent during 2014.

Glenigan also found 1,250 previously stalled projects were brought back into development during 2014, a 13% rise on a year earlier.

The industrial sector was particularly buoyant with starts rising by 46% in 2014 and has maintained this momentum into the New Year, with the latest reading showing a 48% increase relative to a year earlier. This surge has been driven by strong demand for logistics and distribution space, with clients bringing forward a number of large schemes. Glenigan tracked 21 industrial projects worth between £20 million and £100 million starting on site during 2014, including the £77 million ’Thunderbird 2 distribution project in Kettering, Northamptonshire.A 40% year on year rise in detailed planning approvals in the final quarter of 2014 suggests the sector will remain a good source of work during the coming year.

Forecasts for the education sector were also found to be positive, with the flow of school projects set to expand strongly over the coming year. However, work under the

Priority School Building Programme had so far been slow to materialise, contributing to the 12% fall in education starts over the last three months. But Glenigan believed that a 21% rise in detailed planning approvals over 2014 suggested an ‘upcoming improvement in sector activity’.

Meanwhile, the commercial sectors continue to perform solidly, with office, retail and hotel and leisure starts up by 2%, 5% and 10% respectively.

“At this stage a year ago workloads were expanding at a remarkable rate, with the January 2014 Glenigan Index seeing a record

35% increase in project starts – the peak of a 17-month run of consecutive growth,” stated Allan Wilén, Economics Director, Glenigan. “However this expansion moderated downwards through the end of last year.” Allan Wilén, Economics Director, Glenigan – none of the main sectors expanded by more than 1% in the latest period.

CPA warns that although growth in construction should continue result of the May election and ‘capacity constraints’ may be problems...In its latest forecast, the Construction Products Association (CPA) believes that construction output is likely to increase 5.3% in 2015 and 17.8% by 2018.

However, it noted that growth is expected to slow in the medium term due to election uncertainty and capacity constraints.

“Last year’s recovery in construction was driven primarily by 18% growth in private house building,” explained Noble Francis, Economics Director, CPA. “This year, industry growth will be more broad based as a further increase of 10% in private house building is expected to be supported by 8% growth in commercial offices.”The CPA believes that growth rates

across most of the industry are expected to slow in 2016 and 2017 because of uncertainty regarding the outcome of the General Election which may give pause to both contract awards and industry investment. “While this is unlikely to have an impact on construction activity this year, due to the lag between contracts and activity on the ground, it may have an adverse effect on output in both 2016 and 2017,” argued Francis. “Private house building growth is expected to slow from 10% this year to 5% in 2016 and 3% in 2017. In addition, activity in the commercial offices sector, which is still 39.5% below the pre-recession peak, is forecast to grow 7% in 2016 and 5% in 2017. Growth in total construction output, therefore, is expected to slow to

4.2% in 2015 and 3.4% in 2016.”The industry had concerns regarding capacity constraints in the medium term. While output in the sector during 2014 was 8.5% below the level seen in 2007, overall capacity last year was not seen as a key issue. It had to be a matter of concern that construction output is forecast to surpass the pre-recession peak during the next 18 months, despite the industry having lost 343,000 jobs and considerable materials capacity in the seven years following the financial crisis. “As a result, it is essential that there is significant investment in UK construction skills and manufacturing over the next few years if the growth forecast is to be achieved,” concluded Francis.

Ultraframe, known for its award-winning marketing as much as its roof systems has launched a high-impact TV advert directly targeting viewers seeking home improvement inspiration. The LivinROOF advert will air on the most popular TV channels aimed at the home improvement viewer – Home, ITV4 plus the ‘hour on’ channels – Home+1 and ITV4+1.

Throughout February, viewers will have several opportunities a day to see the LivinROOF advert which sits amongst popular shows such as DIY SOS, Escape to the Country and Make My Home Bigger. Ultraframe

marketing director Steve McIntyre continues: “we’ve been incredibly prescriptive about the campaign in terms of the target audience, there’s no better channels to choose than those dedicated to home improvement – it’s a perfect fit with our replacement roof message and we’re confident that our light-hearted, punchy advert will resonate well with this switched on audience seeking home improvement and indeed home extension inspiration.”The TV campaign further strengthens the replacement roof message amongst consumers following its January campaign

Steve concludes: “we anticipate the TV advert being equally as successful in terms of lead generation for our network partners – the success of this will be down to the right product, delivered in a consumer-friendly and informative way.”

Yale Door and Window Solutions is encouraging its fabricator and installer partners to ‘Yale it’ in 2015.

This is the theme of a new Yale consumer marketing campaign, which will run across both print and online, along with videos and social media, generating greater consumer awareness of home security.

With the recovery of the consumer economy in UK, the prospects for the replacement door and windows market are looking brighter and so Yale Door and Window Solutions is using this opportunity to link in with the consumer campaign more closely, to help increase sales for its partners in the retail door and window installation market.

Kevin Hill, Managing Director of Yale Door and Window Solutions, comments: “During recent years Yale Door and Windows solutions has seen the integration of the Securistyle business in Cheltenham and a strong focus on product innovation, with new product launches such as Yale Blade.

“Yale has always been known as the most trusted name in home security, but we recognise that now is the time

to really harness the power of the brand by putting together a true retail focused campaign that will benefit our customers.

“We are working tirelessly to highlight the importance of home security to UK house owners, creating 1.7billion opportunities to see the Yale brand through marketing activities in 2014.

“We are now looking to build on this platform with the new ‘Yale it’ campaign, which works seamlessly across all sectors of the industry, and reinforce the power of the Yale brand to our fabricator and installer partners.”

The campaign message is simple…Fit it. Trust it. Yale it. By choosing Yale products, fabricators and installers can capitalise on the trust and quality inextricably linked with the Yale brand.

ANDY BALL, MANAGING DIRECToR AT BALLS2 MARkETING TALkS ABouT THE IMPoRTANCE oF VIDEo IN MARkETING.

TV sales have reduced but video watching is more important than ever. In fact on average there’s 6 billion hours of video watched on YouTube per month and 100 hours of video is uploaded on YouTube every minute. There’s a lot of evidence to show how video views have increased. Cisco Systems predicts that video will account for 69% of all consumer internet traffic by 2017.

To help businesses create video content without blockbuster budgets, marketing agency, Balls2 Marketing and production company, Big Ant Video has launched a new video service called Balls2 News. Launched at The QUAD cinema in Derby in October at a Marketing Derby Bondholder Breakfast hosted by Balls2 Marketing and Big Ant Video, Balls2 News allows companies to record video clips to use in online press,

on their websites, blogs, email marketing and social media.

Mobile devices make all the difference in video viewing. Statistics suggest 40 percent of YouTube traffic comes from mobiles and it continues to grow. Today we use smartphones and tablets as bite sized chunks of what’s going on in the world.

On screen it’s easy to just press the arrow and watch. People want video content, but business and trade news is not always available in this format. The ALS ice bucket challenge showed the potential vitality for video when linked with emerging technologies, in this case auto-play on Facebook.

Years ago the internet didn’t have the speed to host video, but that has all changed. With the arrival of YouTube and Vimeo it is possible to have video for your website to strengthen marketing messages.

If there was ever any doubt that video content was important, a recent survey by Nielsen claims that 64 percent of marketers expect video to dominate their strategies in the near future. Another survey by Forrester Research claimed one minute of video was

worth 1.8 million words, which puts the phrase, a picture is worth a 1,000 words, into perspective. But for many companies video doesn’t play a part in the marketing strategy or how they deliver their messages. It’s easier perhaps to invest in longer videos that will have a longer shelf life. But if it’s just a short video message that’s needed, bigger costs can be off-putting.

It’s a problem we’d been wrestling with for a while. It seemed that unless you could do it yourself, there was no one that offered companies a quick, easy and inexpensive way to create video content. When we got the chance to work collaboratively with Big Ant Video we jumped at the chance because we know it’s a serviced that businesses really need.

We are filming one day a

month at The Old Chapel, the Balls2 Marketing’s HQ in Derby to offer video production at sensible prices for companies and it only takes about half an hour. The prices start from less than £100 to create up to two minutes of video. Businesses can sign up to Balls2News as a standalone service or as part of a package with Balls2Marketing.

There’s no limit to what works well on video. News, new team members, ‘how to’ instructional videos for products, explaining new legislation and customer testimonials are all good. We believe that adding video into the mix will help companies get a wider reach and their marketing messages will stand out from others. Fancy having a go? Book now on 01332 559406.

And with 5 brand new categories for 2015, including awards such as Conservatory Roof Fabricator, Training Centre 2015 and Machinery Company of the year, the NFAs are comprehensively covering areas of our industry that have previously been ignored, despite their vital importance.

Even in these early stages, there have been plenty of nominations already submitted. Given the activity surrounding the awards, and even a strong increase in followers on social media, this is a further sign that the awards continue to go from strength to strength, and point to a strong 2015 overall.

Taking part in the awards is simple and open to everyone who works in the UK fenestration sector, in any position. Simply register on the National Fenestration Awards website in less than a minute, confirm registration via email, and that’s the process complete. From there, all users will be able to nominate once per category. Each and every nomination really does count and makes a real difference as to who makes it to the final voting phase later on in the year.

Truemans Windows sponsors NFA stopoverThe NFAs have also announced that Truemans Windows, double winners in the awards last year, are to be the main bar sponsors at the NFA stopover event after the motor racing day celebrating the 2014 winners.Jason Grafton-Holt, Director of the NFAs said: “It’s great to have Truemans supporting the 2014 winners event. They supported the awards brilliantly last year, showing support not only for the categories they were participating in, but the awards in general. To have double-award winners on board is fantastic!”On sponsoring the stopover evening event, Joe Trueman, MD of Truemans Windows said:”The NFA’s really stand out for us; they’re well-managed and professional from start to finish, and it’s important for growing companies to get recognition any industry. The winners are decided by public vote making it fair for everyone involved. We we’re over the moon to pick up two awards, so once we heard the bar sponsor was available, we couldn’t resist! Me and my team are really looking forward to the event.

The stopover event at a hotel near the Oulton Park racetrack is a chance for the winners and main event sponsors to relax and enjoy a drink after an energetic days racing. The stopover is also an open invitation for the whole industry to get together. So if there are people in the industry who would like to enjoy a few free drinks and get to meet some of the winners, then they are very much welcome!

When MyTradeTV first launched in 2012 it focused on bringing news into the digital age. Seeing print form a dying medium emphasis was placed on creating digital magazines and newsletters carrying all the latest news from the glazing and locksmith industries. A natural progression from this founding ethos was to embrace video as a way to draw traffic through offering a richer, immersive medium to showcase news, products and industry developments.

After a short period focusing on simply hosting content, MyTradeTV founder Lee Clarke started to see problems. “Hosting clients videos was a natural way to dip our toe in the water with video but what we found was our clients weren’t always happy with the final product that their own suppliers had developed or that the content was a little dated or irrelevant. They’d spent a great deal of money on one video that dated as opposed to smaller amounts on regular video updates.” The solution was to partner up with a local video supplier in 2013 and begin producing their own content in house. An initial relationship with video production boutique

Giant Leap Productions Ltd helped get things off the ground with initial collaboration on a monthly newscast as well as filming of high profile industry events and companies working within the sector.

A key goal was for MyTradeTV to develop video production options for clients that were affordable and to focus on offering regular videos that were short, sharp and to the point. Regarding the relationship with Giant Leap Lee commented. “Working with Nick Padley was a great decision as it meant we weren’t having to make mistakes and learn from them. Nick could guide both us and our clients to sensible options and could take ideas and shape them to properly communicate was required. That meant getting things right first time and giving the client exactly what they wanted.

With over ten years experience producing video content for national brands such as Vauxhall, Puma and Aljazeera Sports, Nick is fully versed in all areas of video production and after the success of a soft launch of video production through MyTradeTV he’s now partnering up to launch MyTradeStudios, a full time

studio dedicated to shooting and editing content in-house for clients.

Lee Clarke commented, “We’ve come a long way in the last 18 months and as far as we’re concerned video is a huge part of who we are. We are now right in the middle of building a state of the art in-house video studio and Nick Padley running our newly launched video production brand MyTradeStudios.

When asked about recent developments Nick remarked. “Things are really picking up pace with video production and we’ve got some interesting projects coming up in 2015. With a newly shot and cut promo for Truedor featuring celebrity architect George Clarke under our belt we’ve got some great original portfolio pieces to show our clients just what we can cook up.”

If you want to discuss using video for your business contact Nick Padley via [email protected] or call the office on 01924 847 875.

ERA has chosen The Sick Children’s Trust as its nominated charity for 2015 with the intention of raising a minimum of £10,000 this year to support families with seriously ill children in hospital. The charity, set up over 30 years ago, provides free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation, as well as emotional and practical support, at leading children’s hospitals throughout the UK with the clear aim of keeping families together while children undergo lifesaving treatment.

Commenting on the decision to nominate The Sick Children’s Trust as its chosen charity for 2015, ERA CEO Darren Waters says: “we really wanted to harness the power of our teams across the UK and come together to support one very worthwhile charity – we asked employees to vote from a selection of charities and The Sick Children’s Trust was the unanimous choice. It’s the perfect charity for our business – we love the ethos of The Sick Children’s Trust, which is all about keeping families secure and together during difficult times. The entire business is brought into this ‘one charity’ initiative and we’ve already made a very healthy dent in our target.”

The Sick Children’s Trust has ten ‘Homes from Home’ and supports around 3,500 families every year. Its houses

help relieve some of the practical and emotional strains of having a sick child in hospital, far from home.Charlotte Webster, Corporate Fundraising Manager at The Sick Children’s Trust says: “We are delighted to have been chosen by ERA employees as their official charity for 2015. Our houses support families at the most difficult and stressful time imaginable and ensure that no matter how serious a child’s condition, they can be there for them, right by their side. We rely entirely on voluntary income to keep our ‘Homes from Home’ open 24/7, 365 days a year, so ERA’s support will go directly towards helping families in need.”

With 2014 marking a number of milestones for GM Fundraising - including funds raised breaking the £1m marker and the 15th anniversary of supporting Hope House Children’s Hospices.

The team took time out recently to discuss what’s next for GM Fundraising. As well as planning upcoming events, it was agreed that the longstanding commitment to Hope House should continue, which was fantastic news for all involved.“As with everything,” explains Gary

Morton, founder of GM Fundraising “it pays to take a step back once in a while and take stock of everything that’s going on. GM Fundraising is no different and we wanted to ensure that what we are doing and who we do it for is still right for everyone involved – not just the team and the Hospice, but our loyal supporters too.

“Although Hope House has developed and improved over the years, at the heart of the organisation, the ethos remains the same – to provide support and specialist care for life-limited children, young people and to support their families. It’s always been all about the kids for us, so GM Fundraising continuing to support what Hope House do is as important to us today as it was 15 years ago. We hope our ever generous

supporters and friends agree and will continue to help us achieve many more milestones in the years ahead.”

Origin, the leading British manufacturer of bespoke bi-fold doors, windows and made-to-measure blinds, is starting the year on a high after celebrating the manufacture of its 100,000th aluminium bi-fold door atthe end of 2014.

The company, which has made enough doors to fill 22 football pitches since opening its doors in 2002, marked the occasionwith a celebratory event at its headquarters in High Wycombe,Buckinghamshire.

Neil Ginger, CEO of Origin, said: “We are delighted to end the yearhaving achieved such a significant milestone. The manufacture ofOrigin’s 100,000th bi-fold door was the perfect way to wrap up what was a hugely successful year, with the launch of the new Origin Window and opening operations in America and Germany. All our UK employees joined for a team photograph outside the new Origin factory, which opened lastyear, and world renowned cake artist, Michelle Sugar Art, created a cake in the style of a doll’s house with Origin bi-fold door and

windows. The celebrations were, quite literally, the icing on the cake!”

The milestone signifies that Origin has made enough bi-folding doors to create over seven thousand square miles of beautiful views in homes across Britain since the company was established 12 years ago. The family business was founded by cousins Neil Ginger and Victoria Brocklesby, who discovered they could not source high quality folding sliding doors for building projects. Their ambitious solution was to establish a company and

manufacture the UK’s best quality doors with uncompromising levels of service.

Neil Ginger concluded: “We now look forward to an even busier andsuccessful 2015, with more manufacturing milestones to celebrate in the future. With our sights set on growing operations in Europe this year, we’re sure it won’t be long until Origin is celebrating the manufacture of the next 100,000 Origin Bi-fold Doors.”

Further Investments within Selecta Specialist DoorsThe new website and Door Manager is not the only exciting development and investment within Selecta. A £500,000 investment in machinery will increase capacity and efficiency levels within the manufacturing department.Another Stuga Prepping Centre and CNC Machine along with a further

two Four Headed Welders have been purchased to accommodate the production increase.Bob Heeley, General Manager, commented “The investment in the new Stuga Prepping Centre, CNC Machine and Four Headed Welders will aid the production and efficiency levels considerably. These investments demonstrate the commitment and enthusiasm Selecta has in the Ready-2-Fit Range of Composite, Bi-fold and Patio Doors.”The investment is coupled with the manufacturing process of the Ready-2-Fit composite doors moving to a purpose built factory unit based upon the Selecta Systems Business Park site.

Bob Heeley, General Manager, continued “We have outgrown our current factory unit and the decision to move the Ready-2-Fit Composite Door manufacturing process has been on the agenda for some time. The move was required to be able to accommodate the new machines, which in turn was dictated by the increase in sales.”The increase in sales has largely been credited to the introduction of the Richmond Classic Collection, which is a brochure consisting of four traditional door styles, in five colours with triple glazed glass designs.Mark Richmond, Sales & Marketing Director, explains “The unique feature of the Richmond Classic Collection is that every door within the brochure is priced at £359 +VAT, making it simple and easy for customers when quoting jobs. The Richmond Classic Collection can be downloaded, viewed and ordered all within the new Door Manager.”Selecta have certainly been busy behind the scenes over the last few months and the new developments and investments certainly bode well for the future. As part of a continuing programme of investment, Bowater Doors - a company of The VEKA UK Group, will soon open a brand new showroom at its Midlands HQ.

Situated in Minworth near Birmingham, the showroom has been designed to showcase Bowater’s broad and varied range of composite doors while, stylistically, echoing the look of The VEKA UK Group’s new flagship showroom in Burnley.

Bowater Doors’ National Sales Manager, Alan Hague explains: “The whole team are delighted with the new showroom. It will be a huge asset going forward, giving current and prospective customers the opportunity to get to know these stylish, high quality products in much greater detail.

“Our doors are handmade-to-order and, besides the showroom examples, visitors will be able to see them during construction, on our factory tour. For those who can’t get to Minworth there’s a great selection of Bowater Doors on display at The VEKA UK Group’s Burnley showroom, too.”

Cleverly repurposed from what was previously an area of office space, Bowater’s new showroom has been designed ‘from the ground up’, with new carpeting, lights and a complete structural overhaul, housing ten full, walk-through composite door units.

Alan continues: “Customers will have first-hand access to all styles in the Bowater Doors range – from Mono, Mono Plus, DUO and DUO Diamond through to more specialist products like the DUO Guard flood defence door, Fire FD30s and the new DUO Contemporary. We’ve even constructed a meeting table using one of our doors that is already receiving envious looks!

“The three DUO Contemporary doors we’re displaying have given us the perfect opportunity to highlight some of our more unusual colour options (Bowater Doors recently launched its new painting offering, with all doors available in any RAL colour) while helping to make a visit to the showroom a more engaging experience.”

There will be a three-day event to celebrate the opening, starting with an official ‘ribbon-cutting’ ceremony with VEKA UK Group MD, Dave Jones on Monday 2nd March 2015.

If you would like to attend please contact [email protected] for details.

The showroom will be open between 10am – 4pm with refreshments provided. Press are welcome to attend.

Further open days will take place on Wednesday 4th March and Friday 6th March, with doors open between 9am – 4pm.

Besides comprehensively exhibiting the Bowater range, an extensive variety of hardware, glazing and threshold styles will be displayed and there will also be point-of-sale materials at hand, giving a taster of the brand’s marketing to

homeowners. For more information and a Google 360 virtual tour of the showroom (coming soon), visit the Bowater Doors website at www.frontdoors.uk.com

Whether you are buying something from the corner shop, eating at a restaurant, or staying in a hotel, ‘service’ is something which is common to all; it stands out if it is good, and it stands out if it is bad.But the level of importance you attach to service depends on how much what you are doing means to you, indeed how personal it is to you.

There is no doubt that the more personal something is to you, the more the standard of service means. That is why where Composite Doors are concerned the service levels have to be outstanding at all times; they cannot simply meet expectations, they have to exceed expectations.

Buying a Composite Door is now one of the most personal purchases a person can make. Every item on the door from its basic style to the number and design of the numerals is personal to them; it is their choice.

Using on-line door designers simply makes this process even more personal; a consumer is investing their time and emotion into choosing a life style product which is for them as well as being chosen by them. They do not therefore want their door to turn up poorly manufactured, poorly delivered, and certainly they do not want it poorly installed. They also do not want to feel that they have had poor service in terms of communication.

Composite Doors are now a very aspirational product, and with that comes an aspiration –an expectation – to receive great service. The quality of finished products needs to be perfect, the delivery process, and the communication process need to be absolutely perfect, and installation needs to be carried out by people who care every bit as much about the door as the customer does.

It is attaining and maintaining these service levels which set Composite Door suppliers, and Composite Door installers apart from the rest.

It is a fundamental principle which should not be compromised at any stage and it is something we at IG Doors have identified as being fundamental to our success and that of the installers who buy the Truedor range from us.

Blinds

With discerning customers always looking for something new and different, integral blinds could help you give domestic rooms and commercial spaces that all important wow-factor.

When the key considerations are to maximise privacy, light and solar control then it’s time to open your eyes to Uni-Blinds® integral blinds systems from Morley Glass and Glazing.

Uni-Blinds is a system of integral blinds, available as Venetian or pleated styles, which are assembled and permanently sealed within the double glazing cavity so can go almost unnoticed until they are activated manually or by remote control. That delivers great looking interiors with less clutter and uninterrupted sightlines.

Integral blinds are an innovative product and should be considered at the design stage when formal specification decisions are being made as they are cost comparative when fitted at the time of the initial window or door installation.

One specific area in which the use of Uni-Blinds are increasingly becoming viewed as the only viable option is with bi-folding doors, a popular solution to high quality replacement doors, new-builds and interior partitioning.

Uni-Blinds offer many advantages over traditional conservatory or window blinds. Once sealed in this

totally dust free environment, the blinds always appear new and require no cleaning – unlike traditional blinds.

With today’s accent on improved insulation characteristics of double-glazing, the application of integral blinds can further improve the U-Value performance of the window or door - with consequential savings on the heating and air-conditioning requirements.

Blinds which are encapsulated within a double glazed unit will perform better than traditional blinds in terms of solar heat gain and shading characteristics. This is especially the case with Uni-Blinds thanks to the use of high performance solar-control glass from GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain, to create the sealed unit.

Uni-Blinds sealed units are supplied in the same way as standard sealed units with just 10 day lead times and Morley Glass provides an excellent after sales service.

The popularity of the Ambience range has increased steadily since its initial launch, giving customers greater scope when approaching consumers.

The specialist conservatory glass roof manufacturer has seen very positive trading figures, particularly last year, with month on month increased sales figures for the

product. The introduction of Ambi Sunshade Blue has proved an encouraging move for the company with the best performing solar controlled glass to date, impressing both customers and homeowners alike.

The latest addition to the Ambience range offers solar properties that provide up to 80% solar Heat Reflection and up to 29% light transmission. Advantages from Ambi Sunshade Blue include greater glare reduction, improved temperature control and greater protection from furniture fade.

Andy Hayes, Sales Manager comments, “Ambi Sunshade Blue maintains a traditional sky blue tint and offers a striking finish to any new installation or retrofit project. We believe that this product will become Tuffx’s most sought after product to date”

It makes the Supalite Roof System the perfect choice for homeowners wanting to gain much more from their existing conservatory and is the catalyst for the growth in demand we are seeing”.• Outstanding thermal performance.“What’s more the Supalite Tiled Roof system delivers outstanding thermal performance; with U value ratings as low as 0.15wmk2 available for the most extreme environments, and

0.18wmk2 as standard, the roof fully complies with all existing UK building regulations. For homeowners, having a Supalite tiled roof installed takes away the extreme temperature fluctuations so often associated with a standard conservatory and offers them a new energy efficient product with the added benefit of lower fuel bills”.• Outstanding thermal performance.“Its consumer appeal is heightened further by the choice of colour options and tile and slate variations available making it wholly flexible to meet individual consumer choices. There are five colours of tile and a further four natural effect slate options; all products have been extensively tested on live installations in the USA, Canada, and Australia over many years giving homeowners the peace of mind that the 25 years guarantee they get on it can be fully supported”.• LABC Approval – Making life easier for fabricators, installers,

and the homeowner.“We also, crucially, have LABC approval which makes the whole process really simple; our fabricators and installers know that when they offer the Supalite system to a customer there are going to be no unnecessary delays, and the whole job can be completed in the minimum amount of time. They are not going to fall foul of any building regulation stipulations that• Outstanding opportunities.“Adding LABC certification is the latest step along the way. Award winning roof system manufacturer Ultraframe has launched a rooflight system to meet the needs of its network partners looking to eliminate the need to dual-supply rooflights – UltraSky is the only system available in PVC or aluminium.

The UltraSky system is designed around the BBA approved Classic roofing system so there’s no nasty surprises or awkward fitting on site, ensuring that every job is seamless and fast. The UltraSky system is further enhanced by the versatile colour options – available in white, anthracite grey or satin black and is available in a broad range of sizes up to 2000mm wide and up to a length of 4000mm. Regardless of the size, each UltraSky is designed around maximum uninterrupted sight lines – bar numbers are reduced and the ridge board and hub ends are as unobtrusive as possible ensuring clear sightlines between the room and the sky. In addition, UltraSky is designed around a thermally broken aluminium ridge, which delivers improved thermal performance.

UltraSky will have many applications and once again adds a new dimension to a retail offering. Steve McIntyre, Ultraframe marketing director comments on the retail support underpinning the launch of UltraSky: “with the launch of UltraSky we have a complete end-to-end roof solution from our classic glazed roof systems right through to our solid roof offering with realROOF and the award winning LivinROOF – the addition of UltraSky will ensure that every one of our loyal network partners can meet the needs of every home extension design.

“We’re complementing our technical outputs with a broad range of consumer-focused literature with the primary aim of inspiring and informing homeowners. Our website is becoming a number one resource for homeowners seeking home extension inspiration and UltraSky will further attract a new market of homeowners looking for a rooflight solution.”

In line with its commitment to offer premium products that will accommodate more dynamic design concepts, TuffX now offers a new ULTRA GREY glass as part of its portfolio.

The highly body-tinted float glass is manufactured in-house in the same way as standard float glass which provides a high shine and intense grey colour. This gives customers more scope with both commercial and domestic projects.

The new ULTRA GREY is ideal for a wide variety of applications as its colour and opaqueness intensifies with its thickness, providing a variety of benefits. Uses include shower screens, cubicles, splashbacks, partitions and wall panelling as well as radiators and internal doors. The new glass makes an equally attractive furniture option as a table top, shelving or even cabinet doors.

The unique colour and opaqueness intensifies from a dark grey in the 4mm thickness to a virtually opaque black in the 10mm thickness.

The 4 and 6mm options provide privacy or vision control. Depending upon the light, when used between rooms the interior of a lighter room can be observed without the viewer being seen. Furthermore, from the lighter side, the glass appears as a black lacquered glass thus providing a one way function.

The 6mm and thicker makes an ideal choice for wall panelling or furniture with the glass being opaque enough to hide imperfections on a wall or cover the front of a cupboard or cabinet.

At 8 and 10mm thickness, the glass appears as virtually opaque black giving a solid, stone-like appearance, that looks like onyx.

These thicknesses give customers greater business scope with an attractive high shine aesthetic appearance that is combined with the flexibility of traditional float glass processing.

A VIDEO detailing the complex installation of glass floor walkways at London’s Tower Bridge has heralded the start of a momentous year for GLASSOLUTIONS as it celebrates its parent company Saint-Gobain’s remarkable milestone of 350 years in business.

“The focus of our celebrations is exploring how we continue to deliver real advantage to our customers and our partners,” says Mike Butterick, marketing director at GLASSOLUTIONS. “The new glass floor at Tower Bridge is a great example of how we collaborated with our sister companies in Europe to meet this technical challenge – and help create a fabulous new dimension to one of the world’s most iconic tourist attractions.”

“The VIDEO shot over the two day installation really captures the

design and innovation involved in the project and the excitement of the general public as they experience the breath-taking views looking down from 42 metres above the Thames for the first time.”

One of the commitments made by GLASSOLUTIONS in its anniversary year is to continue to invest in innovative materials, new ideas and new techniques for those involved in creating a better built environment. It will also continue to put customers first and has just released the results of a 12 month customer research programme.

Says Mike: “Customers value much of what we do so it’s important not to lose sight of our strengths whilst at the same time working on the areas where we believe that improvement can be made to better serve the needs of our customers. We’re implementing a

cultural shift – instilling a culture throughout the entire organisation of customer focus to ensure that the team always goes the extra mile to achieve customers’ needs – and that our systems and processes allow that to happen”.

“Some areas of the business are outstanding and we need to replicate that so all our customers benefit from consistently high levels of service and remain committed to us as we embark on our next 350 years.”

Sapphire Glass Merchants Ltd has won a £1.4 million contract to supply slim, low sightline insulated glass units to Lithuania using Super Spacer Heritage manufactured by Edgetech, a Quanex company. The Lithuania contract follows another substantial order of 1,500 Super Spacer Heritage units to Compass Windows in Northern Ireland.

“Due to the significant increase in sales for slim Super Spacer Heritage units, we have now introduced the product to all of our customers and had a fantastic response in sales,” says Stefan O’Meara director of Sapphire Glass Merchants.

“There is a growing demand for warm edge products that can be used in conservation areas or to achieve a traditional look and the slim 4mm option from Super Spacer Heritage works really well. The architect for the Lithuania project saw a Super Spacer Heritage installation we had recently finished in Pimlico and specified the product.”

The neutral appearance of Super Spacer Heritage and 3mm depth for ultra slim sightlines help it to blend with any frame finish. It facilitates the use of Low E glass double glazing where there was previously only space for single glazing, reducing U-values from typically

around 5.6 W/m²K to below 2. The acrylic adhesive and multi-layer vapour barrier backing on the pre-desiccated silicone foam spacer are combined with Bostik 5000 hot melt butyl secondary sealant supplied by Edgetech to provide outstanding durability and gas retention.

Stefan adds: “We’ve been customers of Edgetech for five years now using its Super Spacer products and started using the Heritage product two years ago. Working with Edgetech to supply Super Spacer Heritage has helped us to win two key contracts this year and we’re now hoping to expand in the New Year with a second Super Spacer line.”

“Speaking to customers, standard aluminium or warm edge spacer bars can intrude over the low bead line of traditional style windows. Super Spacer Heritage reduces the sightline to eradicate the problem. We’re also hoping to add more colour options in the New Year,” says Alan Fielder, sales and marketing director at Edgetech. “We’re pleased to be supporting a long-standing customer in winning some great contracts.”

Leading specialist glass processors, TuffX, has invested in a new, fully automated vertical drilling machine with washer, which in January, was installed at the company’s modern manufacturing facility in Knowsley, Merseyside. The 50,000 sq ft factory already houses the latest technology for specialist glass production, however this new equipment will give greater accuracy and help to increase efficiency at the company.

Currently, senior management are focussing on the further development of both architectural and domestic sectors as the entire Ambience and TuffX brands continue to set standards for the industry.

The Schramal top drill machine, drills glass thickness from 4 – 19

mm and offers greater accuracy during the production process. This will ensure that TuffX maintains a competitive advantage in respect of output, product quality and service support.

This investment was instigated as sales have increased considerably throughout 2014 due to product

diversification and customer demand.

Graham Price comments, “Our investment has already started to pay off with the new machinery helping us to achieve improved results, which sends out a clear message of strength and success to the industry.”

FrameXpress Ltd, the Midlands leading window and door manufacturer, was recently commissioned to supply 125 units for a South Staffordshire Housing project in Stone, Staffordshire.

The contract included a mix of casement windows and balcony doors for a number of new rental apartments being constructed in the area. The highest production standards were specified for the commercial installation which included A rating and Secured by Design products as standard.

With architects and specifiers enjoying the wide choice of colour foils and off the shelf colour options available to them, the company has been well positioned to supply customers with an extensive choice to meet those requirements. The company now offers two grey foils as standard, Anthracite (RAL 7016) and Slate Grey (RAL 7015) whilst a new Hazy Grey (RAL 701) has been launched and added to the portfolio.

Sarah Price, Commercial Manager at FrameXpress Ltd considers that architects are enjoying the vast choice available to them which is making commercial design more dynamic. She comments,

“The striking grey finishes blend so well not only in respect of modern architectural design, but also they sit alongside aluminium products beautifully, which is giving architects much more scope when it comes to high performance specifications and building industry legislation.

Traditional heritage colours are also popular amongst our customers particularly where there is a need to be sensitive to the surrounding environment on projects which could include private hospitals and care homes.

Our range lends itself well to both modern and traditional building styles offering optimum performance, durability and security, all at the right price.”

FrameXpress has a broad portfolio to suit all sized commercial projects offering a 5 – 7 day turnaround, delivering direct to site or company via the national fleet. Those wishing to discuss new projects and the breadth of product choice available then please call Sarah Price on 01952 581100.

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive, commented, “We’re delighted that Roseview has joined the Federation as they are the longest established uPVC sash window manufacturer in the UK and bring a wealth of experience to the Federation.”Willie Kerr who has been in the window manufacturing industry since the early 1980s, commented, “We are pleased to join the GGF and hopefully we can have a considerable input as well as reaping the benefits from being a Member. We have already attended a couple of specialist group meetings as invited guests and enjoyed the networking and hearing Members’ views on issues affecting our sector”.

With a fifty-strong workforce Roseview Windows manufacture uPVC vertically sliding sash windows for trade, residential and commercial customers. Their modern 30,000 square feet factory contains top of the line machining and welding centres, which - in combination with their fully trained and highly experienced staff - help them to ensure absolute

accuracy and quality in all the sash windows they manufacture. Roseview’s solid and structured approach to business is one of the reasons why they have not only survived but grown in the last 30 years. With full technical back-up, comprehensive staff training and a firm belief in customer retention and repeat business, Roseview offer high quality windows backed up by a full end-to-end service.

Brian Smith, GGF Home Improvement Director commented “Roseview join the GGF at a time when we are working on some key issues affecting the uPVC window sector. One of the most prevalent issues involves conservation areas and Article 4 Directions, which affect homeowners’ choice of products, materials and designs. I have no doubt that Roseview’s experience combined with the GGF’s investment in this area will help us develop our plans and activities. Roseview are a most welcome addition to the Membership.”

Willie Kerr concluded, “Now that we are in Membership we will be pleased to contribute our expertise and look forward to getting more involved with the specialist groups and other like-minded Members.”

Glass & Glazing Federation

Ahead of next month’s Budget, the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) has written to the Chancellor, George Osborne MP to outline GGF Members’ concerns on several issues that are affecting the Glass and Glazing industry.

In his letter to the Chancellor, Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive, referenced the importance of energy efficient windows for homeowners and growth in both local and national economies. The GGF highlighted how the 20% rate of VAT has created an uneven and unfair playing field that energy efficient installation companies and homeowners face when installing energy efficient glazing.

Nigel Rees commented “Like most other energy efficient products, windows and doors that have been specifically designed to save energy should receive the lower 5% rate of VAT that applies to other energy efficient products. There are significant long term

benefits if the VAT rate on energy efficient glazing is reduced from the current rate of 20% to a rate of 5%. This inequality is both a disincentive for homeowners to install energy efficient glazing and also a trading disadvantage for glass and glazing companies. Once again, we urge the Treasury to seriously look at the possibility of reducing the VAT rate to boost our industry and the economy as well as improving the UK’s housing stock over the next ten years and beyond.”

Also in the letter the GGF outlines the lack of incentives for homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient through schemes such as the Green Deal and ECO, with the suggestion of an incentive through a lower rate or refund in council tax.

Chancellor George Osborne will announce the Government’s Budget 2015 on Wednesday 18th March 2015.

Component supplier of the year ERA has announced its headline sponsorship of the MLA (Master Locksmiths Association) Expo which will be held at the Telford International Centre between the 2 – 4 October 2015. This is the 17th MLA Expo and is the largest locksmith and security exhibition in the UK attracting thousands of locksmiths and security engineers across the three-day event.

Commenting on the sponsorship, ERA’s group marketing director Will Butler is confident that this support is the perfect fit with the ERA business. Will says: “the MLA Expo perfectly complements our intent to really provide support to the local locksmith not just through the sponsorship of this event but by kick-starting an installer scheme with MLA members. There’s no better place to meet and talk through the key features and benefits of the scheme than at the industry event.

“2015 will be an incredibly exciting year for ERA as we develop a robust consumer campaign to drive home security enquiries to the locksmith. There

will be generations of locksmiths out there that have been fitting ERA as far back as when the first lock was made in Willenhall in 1838. But in today’s market it’s our job to really understand the modern locksmith and develop security systems that help them broaden their services with ease and confidence.”

Steffan George, director at the MLA is driving the MLA Expo event, he comments: “Without question we’re delighted to secure headline sponsors for our event but what’s particularly pleasing is that ERA’s event support is just part of a broader campaign to support the locksmith industry – that’s what our members need – tangible initiatives that drive homeowners to engage their services. We’re delighted this partnership is off the ground. Exciting times ahead.”

Deceuninck, and its hardware partner VBH, have recently invested in a major product testing programme to make it as easy as possible for its fabricators, and their customers, to use the PAS 24 security accreditation as a sales tool.

Deceuninck and VBH tested a comprehensive range of windows and doors with particular hardware and profile configurations to achieve PAS 24 at the British Standards Institution (BSI). The benefits of the new accreditations are being cascaded down to Deceuninck’s fabricators, and their customers.

Fabricators and installers selling Deceuninck windows with the appropriate VBH hardware and configuration know they conform to PAS 24 security accreditation. From there it is simple, and quick to apply for Secure by Design (SBD) and sell highly secure windows easily and cost effectively.

Deceuninck Sales Director, Rob McGlennon, says: “Security is very important to homeowners, so being able to offer a highly secure PAS 24 or SBD window gives them peace of mind. As a fabricator or installer, achieving PAS 24 is a long winded, expensive and difficult process. That’s why, in partnership with VBH, we’ve made it as easy as possible for our fabricators, and their customers, to benefit from the accreditation and use it as an extra sales tool.

“Our windows are also A* Certass energy rated, and renowned for being ‘pretty’. This latest development makes it really easy for installers to confidently sell a window that homeowners will love: an ‘all in one’ window that is highly energy efficient, extremely secure and great looking.

“Some windows are energy efficient but lack security. Others are secure but ugly. Deceuninck’s windows can have it all, without compromise or trade-offs in a single window.

That’s why we call it our ‘All in one’ window.”

To find out how Deceuninck’s ‘All in one’ windows can boost your business call Sales Director Rob McGlennon on 07818 383385 and follow @DeceuninckUK.

Deceuninck is one of the world’s major PVC-U window and door systems companies

with a 76 year heritage. Deceuninck has been

established for over 30 years in the UK, with production

and head office in Calne, Wiltshire. It is in the top three in most major world markets, and is a leader in innovation,

Synseal’s ongoing investment in new extruded profile tooling means that the company’s popular SynerJy 70mm PVC-U system can now provide a tilt and turn window solution with reduced sightlines and greatly improved thermal performance.

In addition to the multi-chambered outer frame which has a slimline height of just 60mm, the 4T1 transom and 4T11 tilt and turn sash can now be used with PTI1 and a new PTI11 plastic thermal reinforcement profiles to give a combined intermediate sash-to-fixed light sightline of just 122mm, which is 20mm reduction on traditional frame constructions using the 4T2 transom and steel reinforcements.

Manufactured from 100% recycled PVC-U, Synseal’s plastic thermal reinforcements offer a number of practical advantages over steel, such as reduced thermal conductivity, less weight, excellent screw fixing retention and lower material cost.

The new PTI11 plastic thermal reinforcement is key to unlocking a new improved level of thermal performance for SynerJy tilt and turn windows. Assuming a 28mm DG specification using Total+/Argon/Float glass with warm edge spacer bar, the new 3rd generation multi-chambered tilt and turn solution will deliver an A-rated WER with a U-value of 1.3 W/m2K, which compares favourably with the equivalent U-value of 1.5 W/m2K delivered by the traditional triple-chambered and steel reinforced approach.

“Tilt and turn windows are a very popular choice in certain regions of the UK including Scotland,” comments Steve Brown, Synseal’s Products & Customer Service Director, “and our very latest and improved SynerJy solution using multi-chambers and PTRs will certainly look good and keep consumers warm.”

The aim behind the development of the Genesis Vertical Slider was simple: to create a window that could become a viable alternative to timber windows in Grade II listed and conservation area buildings. Two years on, that’s exactly what has happened. The Genesis Vertical Slider is regularly being accepted for use in heritage buildings where previously timber would have been the only option, including Grade II listed and conservation area properties.

While it’s hardly surprising given the level of acceptance it has achieved amongst planning officers, the first thing that strikes you about the Genesis VS is just how authentic it looks. There are two key reasons for this. The first is the use of traditional timber jointing methods on the frame and sash rather than the usual 45 degree PVC-U weld. The second is the full range of heritage colours and woodgrain foil finishes that replicate the traditional appearance of timber rather than the high sheen finish usually associated with PVC-U.

These key features are complemented with other carefully-considered touches of authenticity. The window uses elegant high security Acorn cam locks, sash buttons and other complementary hardware in various traditional or contemporary finishes. It has a

deep bottom sash rail, run-through sash horns and colour coordinated pile seals as standard. A wide range of authentic milled Georgian Astragal bars designs are also available in the full range of heritage colours and woodgrain foil finishes.

Despite the window’s heritage appearance, the Genesis VS is very much a modern window. It is as easy to fit as any other PVC-U vertical slider. It has a tilt open facility for easy cleaning and is capable of achieving window energy rating (WER) of A, B and C.

The combination of craftsmanship and innovation mean the Genesis VS is the most authentic vertical slider on the market. So if you don’t think PVC-U can be accepted in Grade II listed or conservation area buildings, think again. And if you’re specifying PVC-U vertical sliders in a heritage building, remember: accept no other imitations. The Genesis VS is the real PVC-U alternative to timber.

Munster Joinery says it uses SWISSPACER for both Quadruple and Triple glazing. SWISSPACER, the UK and Ireland’s favourite warm edge spacer bar, achieves outstanding results in both triple and quadruple glazing.

Tried and tested to give the best performance, Munster Joinery confirms that: “Windows with SWISSPACER warm edge spacer bars inside can achieve U-Values of 0.7 W/m2k with triple glazed sealed units and 0.5 W/m2k with quadruple glazed sealed units.”

SWISSPACER ULTIMATE is the best warm edge spacer bar in the world for thermal efficiency: 80% of Passivhaus windows have SWISSPACER inside. Passivhaus is the world’s leading fabric first approach to low energy buildings. SWISSPACER is the first warm edge spacer bar to achieve Passivhaus standard and the only warm edge spacer that has been rated energy efficiency class A by the German Passivhaus Institute. SWISSPACER has also been designed to last for decades

thanks to its High Tech Gas Barrier which stops gas and moisture penetration through the spacer bar. In a well-made sealed unit, it will save energy for decades.

SWISSPACER Marketing and Sales Director, Peter Appel, says: “Quadruple glazing is becoming increasingly popular in parts of Europe and in China. SWISSPACER offers the best results and is ideal for both triple and quadruple glazing because of its top thermal performance and strong, rigid structure. Triple and quadruple glazing with SWISSPACER inside provide the most energy efficiency solutions, also the production is easy and simple to do.”

“Most companies who pioneered warm edge glass units alongside Edgetech are still customers today. Talking with customers and learning from their experiences was crucial as we grew this market together,” says Alan Fielder, Sales and Marketing Director at Edgetech UK, a Quanex company.

“Asking customers what they think of Edgetech as a supplier is important. We’ve always challenged what we consider to be true with forums, workshops or face-to-face meetings and two years ago we launched a quarterly Voice of the Customer survey. By listening to customers we learn most about what we can do to make improvements to products and services and stay ahead of their wants and needs.

“As usual we had an excellent response to our latest Voice of the Customer survey and the results are encouraging. All respondents were 100 percent satisfied with the value of our service and Super Spacer scored well on performance. The majority

of customers rated it better or much better than competitive products for both productivity and ease of use.

“100 percent of responses stated that our team were knowledgeable and able to answer their questions. It’s an important score. Edgetech’s growing range of insulated glass unit components means we must be able to give customers the information they need, when they need it.

“We don’t ask leading questions. There is no point asking questions we already have the answers to. In fact we learn more from asking customers about the things that matter to their business, warts and all. So when results are good it means even more to us, but we know there is always more to be done.

“We’re launching exciting new initiatives and products to support customers over the coming months so we’ll have even more to ask about in our next the Voice of the Customer survey.”

The automated Edgetech Super Spacer line has gone through the milestone of 1,000,000 units at Lancashire based Padiham Glass, manufacturers of high performance insulating glass units. Starting with a manual Super Spacer line, the fully automated Forel line was installed as part of the £2million expansion in 2007.

Managing Director for Edgetech UK, a Quanex Company, Andy Jones congratulated the team at Padiham Glass: “As one of the first companies to offer Super Spacer, this is a great achievement.”

The significant occasion may have been missed if it wasn’t for an eagle-eyed analyst. During an audit he told Wes Clarkson, Padiham Glass’ Sales Director, the million was close. Wes said: “We were on the lookout to see what customer order would be on the Super Spacer line as we went through the one million mark. It’s really appropriate that it was one of our longest-standing customers Darwen Windows.”

To mark this special occasion, a magnum of Champagne was presented to Bill Ainsworth, Managing Director of Darwen Windows. Bill said: “We’ve always had a very good relationship with the team at Padiham Glass. We get high-quality products with competitive pricing and we have always found the service to be excellent. I’m sure the relationship between our businesses will continue well into the next million.”

“Reaching this milestone in our 35th anniversary year is great for Padiham,” adds Wes. “We manufacture to very high standards and hitting the million mark in warm edge glass units shows we can depend on Edgetech Super Spacer to perform consistently.”

When long established Lincolnshire glass supplier Allenby Glass decided it was time to increase their gas fill production their first port of call was Inagas, the equally well established industry leaders in the supply of gas filling machinery and testing equipment.

With 30 years’ experience in the glass industry, Allenby boasts a wide product range from replacement greenhouse glass and cut to size mirrors, to made-to-measure double glazed sealed units for windows and doors. Quality is key and the company gas fills using Argon for its great insulation properties, and has recently streamlined its production process thanks to the purchase of a Smartfill 2 machine from Inagas.

The Smartfill 2 is an Argon gas filling machine with 250mm touch screen controls, and the latest technology to enhance control and improve productivity, including the Smart Start filling lance, which provides the operative with control, without having to return to the machine. The machine is capable of 30 litres per line per minute and is designed for dual line production – making it ideal for enhancing productivity.

Dave Harris, Owner of Allenby Glass comments: “We are really pleased with the Smartfill 2, it is really simple to use and has helped smooth our IGU production process no end. We have always made it our business to ensure that everything leaves our factory at the highest standard and so we only use top quality products from companies who lead their

field. When it comes to service we are also very happy with Inagas, if we ever need a part we can send it straight back and always get a prompt response.”

When Haffner Murat launched the SMR-4 welder it was billed as a revolution in welding machinery. It seems that the market agrees because sales of the SMR-4 continue to grow. In fact, the welder is proving so attractive to fabricators

that Haffner Murat will install seven machines in January and February alone.

Dave Thomas, Managing Director of Haffner Murat, says, “The SMR-4 is the fastest and most accurate welder available today. It’s one of those machines that simply sells itself because fabricators can immediately see the difference it will make to the quality and efficiency of their production.”

The SMR-4’s key selling point is the automatic self centering of transoms and mullions, which ensures 90 degree transom welding even with uneven arrow heads. It means that welding can be undertaken without the need for a skilled operator. The welder also offers a retracting middle corner fence, three square welding and an on screen window display that

makes checking progress easy. Finally, drop down support arms help to anchor small frames, making the production of these much easier.

As the high volume of SMR-4 installations suggest, 2015 has started very well for Haffner. As the market continues to recover and more and more fabricators look to invest in new machinery, Haffner is taking on new staff to meet demand while continuing to offer the exceptional level of service it is renowned for. A new salesperson started at the beginning of February and a new workshop engineer is due to start at the end of the month. Dave concludes, “It’s great to see demand picking up because it means confidence is returning to the market and fabricators are looking to the future of their businesses.”

Leading sustainable building envelope specialist, Schueco UK Ltd, has just launched a new 3-axis CNC machine with a pneumatic rotating support table, capable of delivering a significant boost to both productivity and manufacturing quality and at a price that is extremely competitive.

Designated the Schueco AF 250, this advanced machine is able to increase throughput of windows and doors by reducing fabrication time and enhance the quality of individual components, thanks to the precision and repeatability inherent in computer-controlled machining.

For example, for doors the Schueco AF 250 can perform the functions of four different fabricating machines – a copy router, an end-milling machine, a door-hinge drilling machine and a punch – leading to savings in both capital requirements and factory space and optimising overall efficiency.

The Schueco AF 250 is simple to operate using modern control software and connects to Schueco’s advanced SchuCal programming software. Its versatility in use, laser-measured x-axis and automatic 3-sided machining without an angled head, enable it to set new standards in its price class.

Measuring 5280 mm (L), 1640 mm (W) and 1990 mm (H) and weighing approx 2200 kg, the Schueco AF 250 is air-cooled with 3.8 kW spindle running

at a maximum speed of 18,00 rpm. Its inherently strong, electro-welded steel machine bed can support heavy loads, while its absolute axis position-measuring system saves machining time by obviating the need for a reference run.

Two collapsible fixed stops accurately define the zero point enabling profile lengths up to 6 m to be processed.

Accessories available include a profile length measuring system, a second tool changer magazine with 3 spaces (in addition to the 5-space automatic tool changer provided as standard) and a ceiling kit consisting of a polycarbonate roof panel with fluorescent lighting.

The AF 250 CNC machine is part of Schueco’s philosophy to provide its fabricator partners with a wide range of advanced machinery to enable them to achieve the highest levels of productivity and consistent quality.

For further information and full technical details of the Schueco AF 250 CNC machine or any other item in the Schueco machinery range, please email [email protected].

Hardware

Synseal has published a 2nd edition of its Hardware catalogue, which now features the exclusive Performance range of window and door handles.

Optimised to match the company’s popular PVC-U window and door systems including Legend, Shield and SynerJy 70mm profiles, the Hardware range has been put together to strengthen Synseal’s supply chain and provide support for professional fabrication and installation of window casements, French doors, patio doors and composite doors.

The new easy-to-use catalogue details a comprehensive range of branded components in four clearly-presented sections: window hardware, door hardware, patio door hardware and hardware accessories.

“Since the launch of our last catalogue and the reinvigorated Hardware product range, we have listened to customers and taken a consultative approach to define priorities,” comments Synseal’s Hardware Category Manager Mark Frain. “Whilst there are many good quality window and door handles available, they are available to everyone and not just Synseal fabricators. That’s why we have introduced our Performance range of handles that are only available to Synseal fabricators and are of our own design. What’s more, they have been meticulously tested to meet and exceed industry standards and this is reflected in the guarantees we offer.”

“Our new and improved 70-page Hardware catalogue for 2015 is jam-packed with components carefully chosen for their reliability, technical performance and value for money,” continues Mark. “All items in the Hardware range are held in stock

at Synseal to ensure that our fabricator partners always have the products on hand to deliver top quality finished windows and doors to their installer customers.”

Company Profile:Founded in 1980, Synseal is the UK’s fastest growing and most dynamic window and conservatory systems manufacturer. For years the hardware industry has battled with the problem of cylinder snapping, bumping and plug extraction – but ERA is first to market with an indestructible cylinder. It’s called Invincible. Not only is it designed to withstand the rigours of a prolonged, sustained attack – it comes with maximum certification in the form of British Kitemark, BS1303:2005, PAS 24:2012 and also meets the requirements of TS007 3 Star Accreditation. But from the fabricator and retailers point of view, it gives the ultimate unique selling point when it comes to securing the home owners interest in a new door.

ERA Marketing Director Will Butler explains why Invincible will shape the way cylinders are judged: “as an industry we’ve developed lots of solutions to cylinder attack but if we’re truthful all the solutions only really put sticking plasters over the problem. We recognise that to truly eliminate the issue we needed to redesign the cylinder itself – so that’s exactly what we’ve done. Central to our ethos at ERA is giving our fabricator and retailer customers the opportunity to really differentiate their door offering – and that’s what Invincible does. We’re convinced that Invincible will really drive innovation once again in this sector and force every hardware manufacturer to really address the cylinder challenge – but in the meantime, it’s our fabricators that will benefit from this significant innovation.”

Features and benefits of Invincible:• The ‘squared’ off cylinder shape has five times more

metal than a standard Euro cylinder at its most vulnerable point – this alone makes snapping and breaking impossible.

• High security hardened 6 pins for anti-pick, anti-drill, anti-snap and anti-bump resistance

• Compliant with all security standards including – TS007 3 Star Accreditation, BS1303:2005 and PAS24: 2012.

Hardware specialist VBH advises that timber double doors can now benefit from the new Mullion Free Double Door Lock system from MACO.

The system utilises two C-TS lever operated locks with vertical shootbolts, which combine to provide a secure central meeting stile with a smooth locking action.

The lock on the master leaf locks into that on the slave leaf, but only after the slave lock has been thrown into its locked position, eliminating the risk of leaving doors only half secured.

The master lock features solid steel hooks for excellent security, helping the lock to achieve a pass at PAS24:2012 and Secured by Design (SBD) approval.

By fitting a C-TS split spindle kit, the lock can be converted from a standard lever/lever operation to a split spindle style for doors where access should only be available from outside via a key.

VBH Timber Product Manager Simon Eshelby states ‘The MACO Mullion Free system simplifies the construction of timber double doors as there is no need for a floating mullion. A 10 year guarantee, along with PAS24 and SBD approval are testament to the strength and security of the locks, while the C-TS lock case and tapered hooks provide a very smooth operation, too. It’s proving to be an excellent addition to the VBH timber range.’ More on the MACO Mullion Free door lock can be downloaded from www.vbhgb.com or can be requested by calling VBH on 01634 263300.

With a reputation as a pioneer in the field of precision engineered door and window hardware, Schüring has enjoyed global success over the last 55 years. And thanks to the exclusive distributor arrangement with VITA, this success has been replicated in the UK during the first year of the partnership.

Stewart Lamb, Managing Director of VITA Hardware Ltd comments: ““We’re celebrating the first anniversary of VITA’s exclusive UK rights to the distribution of the Schüring range of German hardware and are delighted with the brand penetration into the UK PVC-U fabricator market so far. With a comprehensive range of UK focused products, the current offering includes premium door hinges, locks and accessories and specialist hardware for tilt and turn, side hung and sliding windows. The Schüring multi-point lock has been particularly well received thanks to its premium security features.

“Schüring’s five decades have been underpinned by innovation and a drive for new product development in the PVC-U door and window industry, a commitment that’s illustrated by an impressive 450 patents. As far back as 1979, the company developed the first dedicated PVC door hinge and in 1980 introduced one

of the first multi-point locks for PVC residential doors. Over three decades later, as more and more new and often unproven hardware entrants flood into the UK market, a heritage that customers can trust is vital. “With more than three decades of global experience in hardware design and manufacture – including in the UK for 15 years – we never forget that VITA’s own roots lie in the door and window handle market. This legacy dovetails perfectly with Schüring’s innovation, durability and ethos of in-house development, manufacture and distribution. 2015 will see us continue to focus on this alliance as we further develop and grow the UK market for both brands.”

Differentiating your fenestration is a tough challenge in today’s climate but ERA has developed the ultimate homeowner guarantee that will enable retailers to really develop a unique sales opportunity surrounding the locking mechanism. It’s called ERA Five Star Guarantee and is, without question, the UK’s most comprehensive money-backed, home security guarantee.

ERA’s focus has been to develop a hardware guarantee that has real, tangible benefits for the homeowner. This approach enables the retailer to confidently position the locking hardware as ‘best in class’ and this money-backed approach will undoubtedly resonate with the homeowner.

The ERA Five Star Guarantee incorporates £5000 worth of financial ‘compensations’ to the homeowner in the event of a break in due to the failure of an ERA component. Critically, the Guarantee also provides the homeowner with absolute peace of mind that in the event of a break in, the property will be secured and repaired with zero hassle.

Will Butler, group marketing director at ERA is confident that this approach will be a hit with fabricators and retailers, Will comments: “the challenge for any fabricator or retailer is to create as many points of differentiation to get their windows and doors into UK homes – so we’ve given our customers the ultimate weapon that will resonate with

any homeowner looking to upgrade their windows and doors – who doesn’t love a proper, financially backed guarantee? No hassle, no quibbles – just straight forward benefits that go straight into the pocket. Our job is to develop hardware and supporting collateral that really does assist the retailer in winning orders – we are confident that this Guarantee delivers exactly that.”

The Five Star Guarantee includes:• Up to £1000 home insurance excess paid – if one

of our components fails and results in a successful break in then we’ll pay up to £1000 home insurance excess.

• Up to £1000 towards a repair or replacement – exactly what it says – if an ERA component fails we’ll contribute up to £1000 towards repair or replacement of that unit.

• 24/7 help – we recognise that a break in can happen at anytime so we’re on the end of the phone 365 days per year, 24 hours per day to get the property secured.

• Saving on the cost of home insurance – our recommended insurance broker recognises

the value of ERA locking hardware so can save the home owner money on their

insurance premium.•£1000 compensation – no quibble, no

questions, just a cheque for £1000 for the inconvenience caused by a break in.

The MACO C-TS Stable Door Lock system is the latest addition to the C-TS ‘combined’ door lock

range available from hardware specialist VBH.

The bottom lock features a key operated (wind up) lock case so no handle is required on the

lower door; just a profile cylinder and escutcheon cover are needed. The top door features C-TS

lock which can be used as a standard lift/lever (lever/lever) or a split spindle (lever/pad) lock if

preferred. The new stable door lock features steel hooks on

both leaves as standard and manufacturers can choose to order locks with or without ‘intelligent

security’ IS cams.

The lock has a true stable door function, offering the choice of opening just the top door or

opening both leaves together as one unit. This is achieved through a steel vertical coupling

shootbolt that locates into a port on the top door when the lower door is unlocked. This connects

the two halves together when the top door is opened. The shootbolt is available in two lengths

to ensure it is long enough to pass from the lower door, through the transom, and into the top door.

VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson advises ‘This new MACO lock is a superb solution for

PVCu, timber or composite stable doors. As with all C-TS locks the solid steel tapered hooks provide supreme strength coupled with a very smooth closing action. The choice of coupling

shootbolt lengths on the lower half means that only a small hole needs to be drilled through the transom for the bolt to pass through. This

represents great time, effort and cost benefits to door manufacturers used to fitting other products

that require the lock itself to be fed through the transom.’

The MACO C-TS Stable Door Lock is available from VBH in a choice of 35mm or 45mm backsets.

UAP Limited is able to create bespoke Mastersuite orders using their team of fully qualified, experienced in-house locksmiths. These knowledgeable professionals are all BSi Kitemark-accredited, which means that when they physically mastersuite the cylinders, the Kitemark status of these cylinders is not affected.

Cylinder mastersuite services are ideal for large and small hotels and B&B’s as well as apartment buildings, University blocks, sheltered accommodation, commercial premises and local authorities. The owner of a building has a specific key which can unlock all of the cylinders, whilst other key holders can only gain access through certain cylinders, meaning that they can pick and choose who enters a building. Due to the fact that these cylinders come with several security features including anti-bump, anti-pick, anti-drill and sacrificial cut lines, customers will notice a considerable difference if they choose to take advantage of UAP’s excellent cylinder mastersuite facilities, and will feel protected and secure all year round.

David Jennings, the MD of UAP Limited, explains, “By providing tailored, holistic, consumer-friendly solutions such as cylinder mastersuite services we guarantee that all commercial requirements are taken into consideration. This means that customers are getting exactly what they are looking for, rather than having to choose from only a limited range of options.”

He continues, “Cylinder mastersuite services from UAP only ever use BSi Kitemark-registered specialists, as if non-Kitemark registered locksmiths are called upon then this will render mastersuite Kitemarked status of the cylinders invalid. No matter how complicated or intricate the mastersuite system may be, our powerful, up-to-the-minute software will be able to create the perfect system in next to no time.”

UAP’s cylinder mastersuite facilities have been devised in order to cater for a multitude of commercial requirements, so that businesses get an instant boost when it comes to upgrading security. It is a well-known fact that if a company chooses to offer customised cylinder mastersuite services to their customers then they automatically elevate themselves above their closest competitors, as they are thinking ‘outside of the box.’

David concludes, “This means that it is entirely possible to mastersuite any number of cylinders together as a whole, all of which can be different shapes and sizes. These cylinders can also come in a range of finishes, and with or without a thumbturn-it is entirely up to the individual. We have recently launch a UAP 6 pin Rim Cylinder, and what it truly impressive is that we are able to mastersuite and key alike the rim cylinders to the UAP+ cylinders!”

By combining different cylinders you can then create something truly unique, innovative and original, which is why bespoke cylinder mastersuite services from UAP are proving to be such a popular choice.

It can sometimes be tricky figuring out exactly how a mastersuite system would work best, which is why UAP is always on standby to lend a helping hand. If you are keen to find out more about why cylinder mastersuite facilities are in such high demand then just get in touch with UAP by calling their friendly sales team on: 0161 796 7268, or email [email protected].

Leading window and door hardware manufacturer, the Trojan Group are delighted to announce that their innovative Pegasus High Security Window lock has just been awarded a BBA (British Board of Agrément) Certificate. Tony Chadwick, Trojan Group’s Managing Director, commented, “We’re delighted to have attained the certification on Pegasus because it’s testament to the product’s technical excellence, performance and overall quality. We put a lot of work into ensuring that the design and manufacturing quality of every one of our products is the best it possibly can be. This is reflected in this achievement.”

BBA Certificates are only awarded after rigorous assessment and are recognised by specifiers and other decision-makers as an indication of quality, so Trojan can be justly proud. The assessments included salt spray, cycle and security testing to confirm its durability.

The quality of the Pegasus sit alongside a wealth of other benefits that are certain to appeal to fabricators and installers. It is one size fits all, so a single lock is suitable for all sashes from 400mm to 1750mm, giving valuable economies of scale. It’s quick and easy to

install too because the keeps are easy to position in the centre and corner of the windows for every application and gasket compression can be adjusted up to 0.75mm. Offset applications are also achievable from the standard product and the compact central gearbox, which is just 65mm long, means minimal routing is required.

The Pegasus High Security Window Lock has multi point locking and guaranteed centre and corner locking for additional security with every installation. It has an extended 20mm reverse locking action ensures the lock which provides enhanced security. What’s more, when windows are jemmy attacked, the locking actions intensify rather than disengaging as is the case on most locks. The strength of the security credentials are also demonstrated in the lock’s PAS 24 accreditation when fitted as part of a window assembly.

Tony concludes, “The Pegasus High Security Window Lock delivers in all areas: it has outstanding security credentials while also offering excellent cost savings. Having achieved BBA accreditation will further enhance the product’s credibility.”

freSH WINDOW Of OPPOrtuNItY AS vekA CuStOMer SteveNSWOOD SeCureS £3.5M BGf INveStMeNt

One of The VEKA UK Group’s leading Scottish fabricators - Stevenswood - will be expanding its production capacity and network of trade counters across the country thanks to a £3.5m investment of growth capital from BGF (Business Growth Fund). The £11m turnover business, which manufactures more than 1,000 windows and doors per week, currently sells its bespoke manufactured products through its trade counters in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, Dundee and at its headquarters in Livingston. The £3.5m investment from BGF, the independent company established to help the UK’s growing businesses, will see Stevenswood open additional trade counters across Scotland, as well as expanding its kitchen operations to meet the growing demand for its quality products. BGF has taken a minority stake in Stevenswood with Patrick Graham joining the board as Investor Director. The board has been bolstered with the appointment of David Pearson as Chairman and Murray McGarvie as Finance Director.

Pearson brings extensive experience of working with institutionally-backed manufacturing businesses. He is the current Chairman of Nenplas Ltd and DPP Ltd. In his earlier career, David was the Group Commercial Director of Focus Wickes.

McGarvie is an experienced Finance Director with a proven track record in both manufacturing and retail businesses.

The Livingston-based business was founded in 1997 by the current Managing Director Ron Hepburn and his now retired business partner

Dave Flynn, initially focussing on the installation of windows and doors. It was the first company in Scotland to offer VEK’s 70mm Fully Sculptured frames, which are now the industry standard. The strategic recruitment of Director Duncan Murray in the year 2000 moved the direction of the business to focus on manufacturing its own products. During the last decade it has invested more than £1.6m in a new site and state-of-the-art machinery. All manufacturing now takes place at its industrial facilities on a five-acre site in Houston Industrial Estates in Livingston. Ron Hepburn, Managing Director of Stevenswood, explained: “We have been reinvigorated about the future prospects of our business thanks to BGF’s growth capital investment. The period around Dave’s retirement made us all reflect on the journey we had taken and what we had achieved and a sale was seriously considered. But an introduction to BGF allowed us to see more immediate opportunities to grow the business we had worked so hard to create. “The BGF team could see the commitment to investment we had already undertaken with our new site and advanced manufacturing equipment at Livingston so they knew that their investment would be focused on avenues of growth rather than capital expenditure. As a business that trebled its turnover during the recession we are confident that our quality products and our established reputation will allow us to experience rapid growth.” Patrick Graham of BGF said: “Ron is a talented and very personable businessman with a great team around him that have continually invested in the business, diversified and evolved when many in the

sector collapsed. We’re excited about expanding awareness of its product range to new trade audiences.”.

“BGF has backed 23 British manufacturing businesses in the past three years, from laser specialists in Glasgow to carpet makers in Kidderminster. Stevenswood is a brilliant example of a strong, established business that has immediate potential and assists our goal of supporting sustainable growth in British manufacturing while creating local employment.” www.stevenswood.co.uk www.bgf.co.uk

BGF is an independent company that has been established to help Britain’s growing businesses with a turnover between £5m-£100m.

Growth potential is the key criteria. BGF will invest between £2m and £10m per business in

return for a minority equity stake and a seat on the board for a BGF

director. BGF will provide long-term equity investment for those

growing companies that today do not have access to this source of capital. As such BGF hopes to be a catalyst for growth among

smaller UK companies.

NetWOrk vekA MeMBer COMPANIeS OutStrIP MArket GrOWtH rAte WHILe MeMBerSHIP reNeWALS reACH 99.2% HIGHRespected glazing industry organisation Network VEKA has posted figures showing how its members’ businesses far surpassed the average market rate for growth in 2014. Their successes are reflected in the Network’s unprecedented membership renewal rates.

Experiencing business growth at more than double the rate of the rest of the market in 2014, Network VEKA’s member companies have understandably been keen to re-sign with the organisation, helping to fortify its position as the industry leader for the promotion and provision of the highest standards of PVC-U installation.

The VEKA UK Group’s Sales and Marketing Director Colin Torley commented: “We’re delighted to start

the year spurred on by such an encouraging set of figures. Network VEKA pioneered standards organisations in the PVC-U glazing industry and stats like these affirm that the package we’ve honed over the past 19 years really delivers.

“Being a member of our organisation can clearly be seen to have a positive effect on business growth. Companies see that benefit, gain a deeper understanding and commitment to the standards we promote and, therefore, have no hesitation in continuing their membership.”

Central to the Network’s customer-centric approach has always been its package of insurance-backed guarantees, reassuring homeowners that any work carried out by a Network VEKA member company is

covered for the next ten years. Its comprehensive marketing support offers a significant incentive for installation companies looking to broaden their market. Members, in turn, commit to maintaining the Network’s exacting standards, regularly being audited to demonstrate that they do so. Colin continues: “Membership renewals stand at 99.2% for the past year – an unprecedented uptake that further confirms how well our offering fits the bill. We continuously consult our members to ensure that we provide everything they need – from customisable marketing materials to supplementary products from carefully selected affiliate suppliers and, of course, with the benefits that come from being part of The VEKA UK Group.

“The end of 2014 saw our members’ cumulative weekly sales top £1m and registrations reach an eight-year high. We aim to continue this growth throughout 2015,

bolstering our standing with both homeowners and installers.

“Our members install the best, most-versatile systems, market themselves in a professional style that most installation companies can only dream of, and enjoy the backing and kudos that only comes with being a Network VEKA member.”

2014 was a record year for Everglade. So good that in January it opened a second factory close to Everglade’s HQ in West London. The new factory features a Satellite XT cutting and machining centre, and new bead saws. “But we believe it’s the investment in IT infrastructure that makes the combination of the two factories the most flexible and responsive manufacturing facility in the UK,” says Everglade’s Operations Director Yogesh Gopal.

“What it means for customers is that we can make whatever they order quickly. We offer customers a greater choice with our range of windows and doors in both PVCu and aluminium. There are always spikes in volumes of one product or another and now we have complete flexibility to move production to give us outstanding levels of dependability.”

Everglade has achieved this through investment in new software for production tracking and scheduling, management software for stockholding and an extension of the successful barcoding system first introduced in 2013. Real-time production information can be seen through easy to read dashboards.

Since joining Everglade 5 years ago Yogesh has been focused on bringing the latest manufacturing software and technologies to the company. This meant updating the layout to incorporate new machinery, introducing barcoding and creating seamless, automated links between its processing software and machinery. With an additional £1 million of aïr products through the factory last year and investment in the second facility, Everglade has set a new standard of responsiveness in production within the industry.

“We have automated as much as we can, but because we do huge volumes of aluminium there’s a lot of hand finishing required,” adds Yogesh. “The new factory gives us space to be able to do this without it affecting the other manufacturing lines for PVCu products. It’s all about the combination of man and machine to deliver excellent quality on time for customers.”www.evergladetrade.co.uk

Everglade’s family is growing. In its 35th anniversary year, Everglade has added 10 new team members. The new jobs have been created to increase capacity and flexibility for manufacturing both PVCu and aluminium windows and doors, as well more support for customers.

New members of Everglade’s fabrication team started several months in advance to ensure they were fully trained before its second factory opened in January. “We’ve learned over the years that investing in training makes all the difference. It gives us a greater depth of knowledge and creates outstanding levels of dependability,” says Everglade’s Operations Director Yogesh Gopal.

“Having a greater product range means customers expect the same level of service whatever they order. We believe this is the most flexible and responsive window and door manufacturing facility in the UK. The second factory is kitted out with advanced machinery and software systems to make sure its running at maximum efficiency. Both sites have the capability to manufacture all products in the range. Aluminium fabrication required more hand finishing, so having a highly trained and focused team is vital for high levels of reliability.”

The vibrant office-based team is quick to respond to customers’ needs. “Whether it’s a quote, an order or a query, we’re here to help customers. We know that getting the detail precise at this point means things flow through the factory with greater ease. And that’s good for all our customers.”

Everglade Windows has been supplying the trade for over 30 years and is now one of the South East’s leading manufacturers of aluminium, uPVC and composite windows and doors.

Our Valentis retail brand includes Scenic aluminium bi-fold and sliding doors, Fortis and Palladio composite doors as well as three uPVC window suites. We believe offering you more products gives you more opportunities to sell and grow your profits

We are pleased to have won awards for our customer service and work hard to ensure we stay the No. 1 Fabricator for installer support.

Forward-thinking, national Halo fabricator Direct Trade is pleased to announce that it has invested in an additional 40,000 square foot facility in order to further streamline its processes while gearing up for several exciting new product launches in 2015. The company currently operates from a 40,000 square foot factory for its PVC-U window production, and has an additional two facilities for doors, roofs and its Kolorbond operations. The investment means that the total manufacturing space will increase from 61,000 to 87,500 square feet, with the consolidation of the door, roof and Kolorbond spaces, which, in turn will improve service and communications by having these divisions under one roof.

Direct Trade’s Managing Director, Steve Green, explains: “All of this investment has one key goal – to help keep our customers ahead of their competitors through better lead times, more efficient manufacturing processes to pass on great value for money and a larger choice of product range. We spent a lot of time securing the perfect space for the next phase of our expansion programme and were fortunate enough to secure a facility which is close to our existing factory and trade counter. What’s more, we have also invested in our equipment with the addition of a new Stuga line, and

in our people with the recruitment of an experienced Technical Manager in order to truly maximise the efficiency of our production processes. “Most excitingly, the new space allows us greater scope to manufacture a number of new products to complement our already extensive range and bring real benefits and innovation to our customers. We look forward to bringing these latest developments to market throughout the course of 2015, so watch this space for more information.”

Sheerframe 8000, the very latest suite of lead-free 70mm window system profiles from the pioneers of thermoplastic extrusion, now offers a new 8-chambered mainframe option designed to provide an array of specification benefits.

Available in popular contour styling, the new 8-chambered mainframe is slim in appearance with a large face of 52mm to complement the 60mm intermediate frame and the 70 x 70mm large frame.

When used in combination with a 5-chambered sash fitted with an expanded PVC foam Thermlock frame reinforcement and 44mm Argon gas-filled triple glazing, the 8-chambered mainframe window specification will comfortably deliver an A+ WER “zero carbon” thermal performance with an impressive U-value of just 0.8 W/M2K.

With a 14mm wide rebate upstand and a 56mm glazing area the Sheerframe 8000 system offers a future proof choice of 28mm, 36mm, and 44mm double and triple glazing along with a glass bonding platform built in from the start.

“The 8-chambered mainframe gives greater structural strength and enables fabrication of large-span windows

requiring no reinforcement in most cases,” comments David Strang, Sheerframe’s Group Key Account Director, “and this new Sheerframe 8000 profile specification is also a winner in terms of reduced cost and superior thermal performance.”

With £2.4 billion being raised in new affordable housing investment thanks to the Government’s Right to Buy scheme, originally launched in 2012, never has the focus on efficient building been more important to homeowners.

In April 2015 more people will have the chance to buy their home thanks to further Right to Buy discounts, with maximum discounts rising in line with inflation, to £77,900 outside of London and £103,900 in the capital. All of which is excellent news for installers and builders.

Ian Davis, Sales Director at frameXpress believes that as the GGF steps up and urges the Government to boost our industry further, by encouraging growth for local and national economies, it is obvious that housing will once again become a main focus in the political world.

Ian comments, “Energy efficient buildings are an incredibly important part of tackling the world’s energy crisis, being a fundamental part of keeping draughts out and therefore energy bills down, which are major selling points to consumers.

Furthermore, with the Mortgage Advice Bureau currently suggesting that homeowners are giving themselves up to £2000 extra cash in the bank by remortgaging to a cheaper deal, it is very possible that these types of measures are being made by them to reinvest in the home.

The UK housing market saw a spring and summer boom in 2014, particularly in London and the South of England,

before activity dropped away a little at the end of the year. It has been suggested that investment in property will continue to increase and that UK house prices will grow on average by 4%, which will keep the renovation market busy.”

With three window systems available in 16 colours as well as colour bond finishes available on both pvc-u and aluminium products, framexpress has placed energy efficiency, security and aesthetics as key areas for recent development within the range, to ensure customers can buy from under one roof.

Furthermore, frameXpress has an established reputation for quality and high standards which is reflected in the extensive accreditations achieved by the company. This gives frameXpress customers additional selling advantages, particularly within the domestic market where more and more often accreditations such as Secured by Design and PAS 23, 24 are stipulated on projects.

For homeowners, this gives added reassurances in terms of security, with the accreditations and performance guarantees now being recognised and trusted by them.

Whilst frameXpress maintains a stronghold within the fabrication sector, the commercial division also has increased considerably over recent years, with the introduction of a broader product range including aluminium, bifold doors, composite and commercial entrance doors, all having been well received by both existing and new customers.

Already projects for the company this year have been steady and varied, with the team working on installations that have required a complete technical understanding in respect of both specifiers’ and customers’ requirements.

FrameXpress took a very progressive approach to the industry during the dark days of recession by stepping up diversification and streamlining production methods – a step which has paid off. Customer satisfaction remains a top priority at the company and consequently it has established excellent business relations with both customers and suppliers.

Understanding renovation and being sensitive not just to aesthetic options but being able to advise on the most appropriate products for an older or listed property, are also key elements that frameXpress customers can rely upon and discuss with the team.

Ian comments, “Whilst retrofit and regeneration are incredibly big business, it is essential for us to offer a

range that will not only offer the best in terms of thermal efficiency but that will not create problems further down the line. Understanding how older properties breathe and what products will be the most appropriate for a renovation project are important aspects that have to be considered. The last thing our customers need is call back a few months later.”

Conservatories, garden rooms and orangeries continue to be a popular product of choice for the leading fabricator, with consumers still looking to add space and make optimum use of light. The company has three styles of thermally efficient roofing available as well as a Guardian Roof option, to ensure that year round living is possible for those looking to create a lighter and larger living environment.

Looking at the potential for investment in the housing market, Ian Davis believes that diversity and flexibility are the keys to success

for the company. He concludes, “frameXpress has remained strong and reliable even through dark years of recession, which gives value to our guarantees. Another part of our strength lies in the quick turnarounds along with the ability to make site deliveries on different days. For customers working to tight schedules as the market gathers pace, we give them total reassurance.

Whilst it is said that the general election could dampen the housing market activity until the result is known, we believe it will remain buoyant and steadily grow. By offering quality, choice and stability, through investment, not only in technology but also in staff, ensures that our customers can only gain from our products and services.

St Helens-based VEKA fabricator, Qualplas has recently fulfilled one of the more unusual contracts of its 25-year history by manufacturing windows, doors and French doors for a residential project, under construction in Ghana! The contract was referred to Qualplas via The VEKA UK Group website following initial contact from contractor Barry Alger, who is coordinating the project from his beachfront property nearby.Andrew Smith, Qualplas’ Managing Director explains: “Barry was sold on using VEKA systems having been so impressed with the durability of the units installed on his own property, which neighbours the new development.“The VEKA UK Group referred the project to

us as Barry had specified that he wanted to use a reputable fabricator with a long-standing relationship with VEKA. His other main criterion was our closeness to the Liverpool Docks, purely for the comparative ease of shipping the finished units to West Africa.”The new development is situated on Victoria Beach near Takoradi, Ghana, and will consist of 24 serviced apartments, office facilities, a bar and restaurant area overlooking the seafront and a bathing area / swimming pool. Oil has recently been discovered in the region and it is envisaged that a company involved in that industry will lease the entire purpose-built development for the use of its workers. The significant size of the project meant Qualplas received an

order comprising around 40 Matrix 70 windows, 19 sets of French doors and additional residential doors. VEKA door and window systems are therefore used exclusively throughout the development, paying testament to Barry’s confidence in their weather resistance and technical performance.Andrew continues: “The photos Barry has sent us of the construction site demonstrate just how exposed the new development is to the elements. Not only will the window and door installations have to withstand savage sea winds, rain and salt water erosion but, with the changing seasons, there will be huge variations in temperature from extreme heat to bitter chill.”Colin Torley, Sales and Marketing Director for The VEKA UK Group added:

“Qualplas’ commitment to fabricating VEKA systems not only secured the company this fascinating contract but reassured the customer that the products he chose have been thoroughly tested to withstand the world’s most unforgiving climates. “VEKA subjects its systems to prolonged testing in extremes of heat and cold as part of its development and ongoing quality control process, ensuring that the challenges presented by developments like Barry’s are comprehensively catered for. We can’t wait to see pictures of the finished project and are proud that systems from The VEKA UK Group, fabricated by Qualplas - a long-standing, UK-based VEKA fabricator are being championed on a world stage.”

The company, which works to develop online solutions specifically for the window and door industry, celebrated a record 2014 with a 30% increase in turnover, allowing them to employ new staff and expand its premises.

Over the past few months the company has expanded its profile further working with the likes of Solidor, Truedor and Selecta Systems.

Richie Thornton, Director of The Consultancy, said: “The figures definitely speak for themselves, and while public relations is a key part of our business, we have found that the best way to spread the word is through word of mouth.

“In this sector, there is a lot of competition. But if you have a contract with one client and deliver a good package, the chances are they will speak highly of you within the industry.

“That is reflected by the fact that almost 80% of our new businesses has come from a referral.”With an abundance of projects already in the pipeline, The Consultancy is already looking forward to a busy 2015.

Richie added: “Last year was really such a highlight for us, after ten years in the industry our portfolio of work is to continuing to grow stronger and stronger; we cannot wait to see what 2015 has in store.

“Alongside further projects we are also running a ‘Death of the Fax’ campaign, encouraging the industry to embrace the digital age and move away from the constraints of the fax machine.

THE CONSULTANCY has been praised after the development of a new made-to-measure online trade system for one of the UK’s leading suppliers.

Selecta Systems, which specialises in PVC-U window and door systems, enlisted the digital specialists to optimise its specialist doors ordering systems and create a more efficient process.

From this The Consultancy developed a bespoke responsive website featuring a trade portal, composite door designer and online ordering system, allowing users to log-in and generate orders in minutes with instant live pricing.

Andy Thorpe, an Order Processor from Selecta Systems, said: “After the first presentation of the system, I was blown away. I knew this system would be able to revolutionise the way the business currently operates.“We had always used fax and telephone ordering systems previously, which worked and did the job, but this system will save on processing time which had previously been spent handling faxes, customer concerns and trying to contact our customers.

“The online system for our composite door range has just been launched and I cannot wait for our other products to be rolled out.”

Selecta Systems has been operating for over 30 years and is still run by the original company owners from its nine-acre headquarters in Birmingham. On top of allowing the trade to order from its composite door range, the company will also be rolling out online designers and ordering systems for its bi-fold and patio door ranges in the coming months.

Mark Walker, Marketing and Design Manager at Selecta Systems, has been managing the whole project and said: “In this day and age our customers need remote access to our products anywhere and everywhere. “With the old system, we would rely on fax machines and phone calls to ensure orders were processed and received. This was a much lengthier process with more room for error.

“Now our systems are so much more capable and with ordering and bespoke composite door design available 24/7, we cannot wait to see the effect on our efficiency levels and sales.”

“Working with The Consultancy is a pleasure and their professionalism and knowledge is second-to-none which has helped the project run smooth and efficiently.”

The Consultancy has been in the industry for over 10 years and provides digital solutions specifically for the window and door industry.

Richie Thornton, Director of The Consultancy, said: “This has been a brilliant project to round off the year, especially with such already positive feedback from staff.

“We cannot wait to begin rolling out Selecta System’s other online designers in the new year and are looking forward to seeing them reap the rewards from going digital.”
