NADA Retenon Review:One-Year-Old Mainstream Models

Decembers edion of Perspecve is the second in a two-

part series that details the one-year retenon performance of all-new or heavily revised mainstream models, which

follows last months review of luxury model retenon.

Just as we did in our review of one-year-old luxury models, we provided retenon

gures for the most popular trim level of the mainstream vehicles as determined by its

share of new vehicle sales. While retenon for other styles (e.g., other trim levels or

body and engine types) within a model lineup may be beer or worse than ones

provided, dierences are generally small and do lile to change the models overall

standing relave to either its compeve segment or to the outgoing model.

The retenon calculaon is a funcon of a three month average (Oct. Dec. 2014) of

NADAs average trade-in value divided by a vehicles typically-equipped Manufacturer

Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). Typically-equipped MSRP data was sourced from ALG

and NADA Used Car Guide.Note that a vehicles rate of depreciaon, and ulmately

retenon, is in part a product of the level of discounng when sold new. As such, MSRPs

do not include any incenves or rebates available at the me of purchase.

Background informaon describing each model was provided by NADAguides.com,

whose broad range of data, products and services, informaonal arcles, ps and advice

and video buying guides help make the vehicle purchasing process easier for consumers.

Chevrolet Corvee Sngray

With a 6.2-liter V8 engine rated at 455 horsepower

and 460 lb- of torque, the seventh-generaon 2014

Chevrolet Corvee Sngray(also known as the C7)

combines top-notch driving capability with

spectacular styling. The rear-wheel drive muscle car

can be congured either as a 6-speed automac with

paddle shiers or a 7-speed manual. The EPA

esmates a manual-equipped Corvees fuel

economy at 17 mpg city and 29 mph highway, with

both gures dropping by one mpg when equipped with the automac. Starng at

$51,000, the Corvee is a tremendous value compared to other sports cars of its caliber.

Retenon Report Card

Despite a nearly 7 percent increase in MSRP for a typically-equipped model, the wildly

popular 2014 Corvee has done exceponally well from a retenon standpoint. One-

year retenon for the 2014 Sngray Coupe 1LT automac stands at 84.7 percent, which

is an improvement of 10.7-percentage points over the outgoing model and an

impressive 14.7-percentage point lead over the average for the Upper Sport car

segment. Equally notable is the fact that retenon for the stunning new Corvee is the

highest of all redesigned models for the 2014 model year.

Chevrolet Impala

Redesigned from the ground up for 2014, the

Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan with front-wheel

drive as standard. Buyers can choose between a 2.5-

liter 4-cylinder engine producing 195 horsepower, or

a larger 3.6-liter V6 generang 305 horsepower. The

Impala comes standard with a 6-speed automac

transmission and fuel economy for the I4 engine is

esmated at 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. A hybrid model is also oered and can

achieve up to 35 mpg highway.

Retenon Report Card

While the typically-equipped MSRP for a 2014 Impala rose by roughly $1,000 from the

previous model, the average trade-in value improved by over $3,000, which translates

to a 9.1-percentage point increase in one-year retenon versus the 2013 version. At

59.9 percent, the one-year retenon for a new Impala LS 2.5L I4 is also 4.3 -percentage

points beer than the 2014 Large Car segment average.

Chevrolet SS

The Chevrolet SS full-size sport sedan is based on the

Australian market Holden VF Commodore and was

revived for 2014 to saate fans of the disconnued

Ponac G8. Using German luxury sport sedans as abenchmark, the rear-wheel drive SS was developed to

achieve a 0-60 mph sprint in just ve seconds, thanks

to its 425 horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine on the

inside, while maintaining a more mature,

conservave appearance on the outside. Using a 6-

speed automac transmission that includes the

companys TAPshi technology, fuel economy for the SS is esmated at 14 mpg city and

21 mpg highway.

Retenon Report Card

Although the 2014 SS has no previous model to compare against, one-year retenon for

the SS is above-average relave to its peer group. While the Upper Sport car one-year

retenon average is 70 percent for 2014 models, the 2014 Chevrolet SS 6.2L V8 carries a

retenon gure of 71.6 percent.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Amid sening compeon and the rising popularity

of full-size pickups, Chevrolet completely redesigned

its Silverado 1500 for 2014 and ed it with an all-

aluminum range of engines, including a 5.3-liter V8

EcoTec3 with 355 horsepower and 383 lb- of

torque. Its claimed to be the most full-ecient V8

found in any full-size truck, with fuel economy

checking in at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. The

285 horsepower 4.3-liter V6 is no slouch either, as Chevy claims it bests its Ford and

Ram rivals with the most torque and highest tow rang of any standard V6. The V6 has

an EPA esmated fuel economy of 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway using a 6 -speed

automac transmission.

Retenon Report Card

Comparing the 2014 Silverado Crew Cab LT 4WD 5.3L V8 with the previous years

Extended Cab LT 4WD 5.3L V8, the typically-equipped MSRP grew by over $3,000, yet

the disparity in one-year retenon is a signicant 6.2-percentage points. The 2014

edions 69.7 percent retenon is also a solid 5-percentage points greater than the

Large Pickup truck segment average.

FIAT 500L

Following in the footsteps of the pete Fiat 500

compact car which was the Italian brands rst

model upon its return to the U.S. market comes

the 500L mulpurpose vehicle (MPV), which is a

larger model based on its smaller sibling. Maintaining

a air and style thats disnctly Italian, but with four

doors and room for ve adults, the 500L oers more

versality and competes against vehicles such as the

Kia Soul, Nissan Juke, Mini Cooper Clubman and

Honda Fit. The car can be had with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed Euro twin clutch

transmission, mated to a 160 horsepower turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine.

The second U.S. oering from Fiat achieves an EPA esmated 25 mpg city and 33 mpg

highway.

Retenon Report Card

With regards to value retenon, Fiats rst four-door subcompact is nding that being

the new kid on the block isnt easy. While the 2014 Intermediate Subcompact car one-

year retenon average is 62.4 percent, the retenon for a 2014 Fiat 500L Pop 1.4L I4

Turbo is a mere 55.3 percent, which is 7.1 percentage points below the segment

average.

GMC Sierra 1500

With new powertrain opons for 2014, the

completely redesigned GMC Sierra 1500 full-size

pickups are stronger and more fuel-ecient than

ever before. The new 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V6 (285horsepower), 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 (355 horsepower)

and 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 (420 horsepower) engine

choices deliver power to the rear wheels through a 6-

speed automac transmission, while oponal four-

wheel drive can be selected with any of the three

engines. Fuel economy for the V6 is esmated at 18 mpg city and 24 mpg, while the 5.3L

V8 is rated at 16 mpg city and 23 mpg highway. Fuel economy for the 6.2L V8 is rated at

14 mpg city and 17 mpg highway.

Retenon Report Card

At $43,830, the typically-equipped MSRP for a 2014 GMC Sierra Crew Cab SLE 4WD 5.3L

V8 is $5,000 more expensive than the 2013 Extended Cab SLE 4WD 5.3L V8 it replaces,

but its one-year retenon improved by 7.2 percentage points. The 2014 Sierras 72.7

percent retenon separates the model even more from the 2014 Large Pickup truck

average, which sits at 64.7 percent retenon.

Jeep Cherokee

Aer a long hiatus, Jeep brought back the Cherokee

nameplate in 2014 in the form of a sleeker mid-size

SUV that is more stylish and aerodynamic than the

boxy Liberty it replaced. A 2.4-liter Tigershark I4

engine (184 horsepower/171 pound-foot of torque)

comes standard, while a 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 engine

(271 horsepower/239 lb- of torque) is oponal. Both

are mated to a 9-speed automac transmission.

Customers can choose between front-wheel drive

and four-wheel drive, with o-road equipment such as a locking rear dierenal

highway, while the V6 is rated at 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

Retenon Report Card

The Jeep Cherokee has been a strong performer both in new vehicle sales and used

value retenon. One-year retenon for the 2014 Cherokee Sport 4WD 2.4L I4 is 72.7percent, which is a few percentage points above the 2014 Compact Ulity segments

68.9 percent average.

Kia Cadenza

Much like Hyundai, Kia connues to make strides in

improving customer percepon of its brand and the

Cadenza is another step in the right direcon. The full

-size front-wheel drive luxury sedan was completely

new for 2014 and is built on the same plaorm as the

Hyundai Azera. Sharing the same 293 horsepower 3.3

-liter V6 and 6-speed automac transmission with its

Hyundai cousin, the powertrain combinaon achieves

an esmated 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

Retenon Report Card

Kia has been fairly successful in its inial foray into premium territory, but the Cadenza

is experiencing growing pains as far as value retenon goes. One -year retenon for a

2014 Cadenza Premium 3.3L V6 comes in at 56.5 percent versus the 2014 Upper Mid -

size car average of 61.2 percent, represenng a 4.7-percentage point disparity.

Kia Forte

The compact Kia Forte sedan received a complete

redesign for 2014, with longer, wider and lower

proporons, improved performance and fuel

economy, a more rened ride and more comfortableinterior. Beneath the hood sits either a 148

horsepower 1.8-liter I4 or an oponal 173

horsepower 2.0-liter I4 mated to either a 6-speed

manual or 6-speed electronically controlled

automac transmission. Fuel economy for the Forte is

esmated at 24 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, depending on engine and transmission

selecon.

Retenon Report Card

Even though the average trade-in value for the 2014 Kia Forte Sedan EX 2.0L I4 grew by

a few hundred dollars compared to last years version, it was overshadowed by the

models $1,725 hike in price, which negavely aected its retenon. Not only is the

2014 Fortes one-year retenon 4.4-percentage points lower than the previous edion,

the retenon average for 2014 Intermediate Compact cars is also 3.4-percentage points

higher.

Kia Soul

The 2014 Kia Soul compact hatchback was a redesign

that, despite maintaining its familiar looks, was built

on a brand new plaorm more focused on ride,

handling and overall renement than before.

Aordability, superior packaging and fuel eciency

remain hallmarks of the Soul, with the laer achieved

using either a 130 horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder or

oponal 164 horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine.

Buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual or a 6-

segment average of 62.4 percent.

Mazda Mazda3

An all-new Mazda Mazda3 compact car was

developed for 2014 displaying the companys new

owing Kodo design language in both sedan and 5-

door hatchback forms. SkyAcvtechnologies are

found throughout the vehicle and the 155

horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder (6-speed manual or 6-

speed automac) and oponal 184 horsepower 2.5-

liter 4-cylinder (6-speed automac only) engines do

wonders for the vehicles fuel mileage, while

maintaining a fun driving experience. Fuel economy is

esmated at 27 mpg city and 41 mpg highway, with eciency supported by a new

regenerave braking system.

Retenon Report Card

Used value retenon for the redesigned 2014 Mazda3 has been good. One-year

retenon for the 2014 Mazda3 i Sport reached 66 percent, up by over 3-percentage

points from the outgoing models 62.9 percent. Relave to its compeve set, the 2014

Mazda3s one-year retenon is slightly above the Intermediate Compact car segment

average of 65.2 percent.

Mazda Mazda6

Preceding the release of the new Mazda3 was the

Mazda6 mid-size sedan, which was redesigned for

2014 with a stunning exterior design and a spacious

cabin full of high-quality so-touch materials. The

Kodo soul of moon design language was such a

head-turner for the Mazda6 that the car was named a

nalist for World Car Design of the Year. The sedan

employs a 184 horsepower 2.5-liter SkyAcv-G direct-

injected 4-cylinder engine. Fuel economy for the

Mazda6 equipped with the 6-speed automac is

esmated at 26 mpg city and 38 mpg highway.

Retenon Report Card

Mazdas redesigned 2014 Mazda6 has been warmly accepted. As a result, retenon for

the 2014 Mazda6 i Sport stands at 70.6 percent, which is nearly 12-percentage points

above the outgoing models score of 58.8 percent. Retenon for the new Mazda6 is also

well above the Intermediate Mid-size car segment average of 61.2 percent.

MINI Cooper Hardtop

A division of BMW of North America, MINI made its

U.S. debut in 2002 with the retro Cooper, which was

made famous in the 2003 Hollywood remake of The

Italian Job.For 2014, the brand released an all-new

front-wheel-drive Cooper Hardtop that keeps MINIs

familiar design, but is longer, wider and taller than

last generaons model. A 134 horsepower 1.5-liter

twin-turbocharged 3-cylinder engine powers the base

model, while the Cooper Hardtop S is ed with a

choices are available, including a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automac, and 6-speed

automac with paddle shiers. Fuel economy for the base model is rated at 29 mpg city

and 40 mpg highway, while the more powerful S can achieve 24 mpg city and 34 mpg

highway.

Retenon Report Card

For the 2014 model year, the new Mini Cooper 1.5L I3 Turbo actually became $1,500

less expensive than a similarly equipped 2013 model. The MSRP was not the only thing

to drop on the 2014 Mini Cooper though, as retenon for the 1.5L turbo fell by more

than 1-percentage point compared to the naturally-aspirated 2013 model. However,

retenon for the 2014 Mini Cooper sits nearly 5-percentage points above the Sport car

segment average of 67.9 percent.

Mitsubishi Mirage

The Mitsubishi Mirage was an all-new model for

2014. It's a 5-door subcompact powered by a ny

engine that help it achieve big EPA fuel economy

numbers. The Mirages $12,995 MSRP also make it

one of the least expensive new cars available in

America. The Mirage is powered by a 1.2-liter I3

engine that produces 75 horsepower and 75 lb- of

torque. The Mirage can be paired to a standard 5-

speed manual transmission, or an oponal

connuously variable transmission (CVT). Fuel

economy is within an EPA esmated range of 34 mpg

city to 44 mpg highway, depending on transmission selecon.

Retenon Report Card

Retenon for the 2014 Mirage has been subpar. One-year retenon for the 2014 Mirage

DE 1.3L I3 stands at 54.5 percent, over 10-percentage points lower than the Entry

Subcompact car segment average of 64.8 percent.

Mitsubishi Outlander

The Mitsubishi Outlander was all-new for 2014, with a

new look that's more upright and rounded than that

of its predecessor. The Outlander comes in front-

wheel drive or four-wheel drive models, with a choice

of 4-cylinder or V6 engines. Fuel eciency is

esmated at 25 mpg city to 31 mpg highway for the

front-wheel drive version, and 24 mpg city and 29

mpg highway for four-wheel drive.

Retenon Report Card

Retenon for the 2014 Outlander is below average. At 67.1 percent, one-year retenon

for the Outlander SE 4WD 2.4L I4 is nearly 5-percentage points lower than the outgoing

models 71.8 percent, and is also below the Compact Ulity segment average of 68.9

percent.

Nissan Rogue

Aer its introducon in 2008, the Nissan Rogue went

on to become Nissan's second best-selling vehicle.

For 2014, it received its rst major redesign which

included updated styling inside and out, as well as

more interior space. Though the new Rogue is notreally any bigger than the outgoing model, the

wheelbase is longer and the vehicle is taller, while the

front overhang has goen shorter. Styling is modern,

condent and sleek, while the interior has been

updated and now features plenty of technology that

cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 175 lb- of torque. It comes

standard with front-wheel drive and a CVT automac transmission, with an all-wheel

drive opon (AWD). Fuel economy for the front-wheel drive model is esmated at 26

mpg city and 33 mpg highway, while AWD versions can achieve 25 mpg city and 32 mpg

highway.

Retenon Report Card

Retenon for the 2014 Nissan Rogue has been above average. One-year retenon for

the 2014 Rogue S AWD stands at 73.1 percent, a gure 2.3-percentage points higher

than the outgoing models 70.8 percent gure. Compared to its compeve set,

retenon for the 2014 Rogue is more than 4-percentage points ahead of the Compact

Ulity segment average of 68.9 percent.

Subaru Forester

The Forester was completely redesigned for 2014. It

features a new exterior and interior as well as a new

replaces, even though external dimensions have only

grown by a couple of inches. The 2014 Forester is

horsepower. XT level trims are powered by a new 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed 4-

cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 250 horsepower. Transmissions include a

standard 6-speed manual and an oponal CVT with manual shi mode. Fuel economy is

esmated to be 24 mpg city and 32 mpg highway for the 2.5 -liter, and 23 mpg city and

28 mpg highway for the 2.0-liter turbo.

Toyota 4Runner

The 2014 4Runner received refreshed styling inside

and out, but the overall design sll closely resembles

the outgoing 2013 model. Outside, the front grille

and headlights were revised, while inside a new

instrument panel was added along with a

touchscreen-based infotainment system that includes

Toyota's Entune smartphone integraon. The re-

vamped 2014 Toyota 4Runner is powered by a 4.0-

liter V6 engine that produces 270 horsepower and

278 lb- of torque. Rear-wheel and four-wheel

drivetrains are paired with a standard 5-speed automac transmission. Rear-wheel drive

fuel economy is esmated at 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, while city and highway

rangs for four-wheel drive models are 17 mpg and 21 mpg, respecvely.

Retenon Report Card

Despite all of the 2014 4Runners updates, used value retenon has been depressed

compared to the 2013 model year. One-year retenon for the 2014 4Runner SR5 4WD

stands relavely high at 77.1 percent, however, its score is down signicantly from the

2013 4Runners 85.1 percent gure recorded last year. The 2014 4Runners retenon is

nearly 10-percentage points higher than the Mid-size Ulity segment average of 67.6

percent.

Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla was completely redesigned for

2014. The new car boasts a much more stylish and

aggressive look than in years past, with standard LED

headlights and an overall longer, lower and widerpresence. The result is a larger cabin for passenger

comfort, including more legroom. Inside, the Corolla

features premium materials and improved standard

features with plenty of technology to keep owners

connected to the informaon and entertainment they

crave. A CVT is now available, which boosts fuel eciency to an esmated 29 mpg city

and 38 mpg highway.

Retenon Report Card

The Corolla has tradionally been a solid retenon performer and the 2014 model

connues to carry the torch. While retenon for the 2014 Corolla L is down slightly from

2013s, its score of 70.4 percent is over 5-percentage points higher than the

Intermediate Compact car segment average of 65.2 percent.

Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander was completely redesigned for

2014. Delivered as a front-wheel drive and four-wheel

drive crossover vehicle, the 2014 Toyota Highlander

was given a sophiscated redesign involving the use

of high-strength steel and aerodynamic roof rails.

Engine opons for the 2014 Highlander consist of four

-cylinder and six-cylinder opons. Available only on

front-wheel drive LE models, the 2.7-liter four-

cylinder engine features 185 horsepower as well as

esmated fuel economy of 20 mpg city and 25 mpg. The remainder of the 2014 Toyota
