May Allah bless him who listens to wisdom and grasps it, and when invited to the Right Path he comes near, who grasps onto a sage leader and finds salvation:

He keeps his Lord before his eyes, fears his sins, performs the good deeds, earns the treasure of heavenly rewards, avoids vice, aims at the good objectives, and reaps recompense:

He faces off his passions and rejects his desires, makes endurance a means to his salvation and piety to earn him for his death:

He rides on the path of honor and holds on the highway of truth, makes good use of his time and hastens towards the end, ─and takes with him the provision of good deeds.

Heed Allah like the one who listens to good advice and accepts, and when he commits sin he admits, when sensing trouble he acts, when cautioned he listens, when he believes he does well, when admonished he takes heed, and when he is criticized he takes heed,

He responds to the call of Allah and leans towards Him, when he goes back sinning he repents, when he is shown the good he sees it. He hastens requesting, and saving himself in his effort.

Goodly was his provision, comfortable his conscience, purified his inner self, ─built for the next world, and taking with himself provision for the day of his departure,…..

O' servants of Allah! I advise you to heed Allah, Who has illustrated for you similes, and decreed spans for your lives, and provided you with dress, and He has enhanced for you the livelihood.

Allah has conferred upon you with knowledge, and ordained for you rewards, and has bestowed upon you vast bounties and gifts. Allah has also warned you through far reaching arguments:

and He has enumerated you by numbers, and fixed for you spans of life by His own Wisdom in this place of test and house of instruction. You are therefore on trial in this world and surely have to render account about it.

In Sermon 83, Ali: Taq’wa for Day of Judgment

Heed Allah, like that of a wise man whose the thought of next world has occupied his mind, fear of Allah has afflicted his body, his engagement in night prayer has kept him awake, the hope of recompense has snubbed his days, abstention has numbed his desires, and remembrance of Allah has engaged his tongue. He is apprehensive before the danger and he avoids the suspicious ways in favor of the clear ones.

He is direct to secure his purpose, and the ambiguous does not blind his thinking.

Joyful in the good tidings, at ease when asleep, secure in his days, has leaped from the transient to the eternally blissful world.

In Sermon 114, Ali: Enjoining people to Piety

I advise you to heed Allah ─for that is the provision for the next world and with it is your return. It is an achieving provision for a successful return, has called to it the Best One (Muhammad), ─who made the people listen and the better listener comprehend. So the caller has proclaimed and the listener has succeeded and attained.

O' servants of Allah! Heeding Allah has saved Allah’s devotees from the unlawful and put His fear in their hearts, spending their nights in wakefulness and their days in thirst.

So the troublesome to them was comfort, and they exchanged thirst for water abundant. They saw death to be near, so they hastened towards good deeds, and shunned base desires as they observed death beaming in their sight.

He who makes his heart feel the fear of Allah: will have achieved a grand position and his works and deeds have truly succeeded and attained.

So take advantage of it, prepare yourself for it, and do all that you can to win Paradise.

Certainly this world was not made a place of permanent stay for you, but it has been created as a pathway. You make from it provisions by your good deeds for the purpose of the permanent abode in Paradise.

Be ready for the departure from this world, and keep close to setting off to the next world.

Know O' servants of Allah! that piety is a castle of protection while impiety is a castle of destruction which does not shield him who takes refuge within. Know that piety cuts the sting of sins and by true conviction the final aim is achieved.

O' servants of Allah! Fear Allah in the matter of your own selves, which are dearest to you. Because Allah has clarified to you the way of truthfulness and displayed its paths. So you may choose either an ever present distressful misfortune or an eternal felicity and happiness.

You should therefore provide in these mortal days for the eternal days…..

I advise you, O' servant of Allah, to fear Allah and to obey Him, because Taq’wa is the salvation for tomorrow and the deliverance permanent.

Allah has warned of chastisement and did so thoroughly. He persuaded you towards virtues and did so fully. He described this world and its cutting away, and its short time and its switching ways.

Therefore, ward off from you its lures, because little of it after death will follow you. It is the closest to Allah’s displeasure and the remotest from Allah’s pleasure.

So close your eyes, O' servants of Allah, from its vexations and concerns, since you are certain about its separation from you and its changeable conditions.

In Sermon 191, Ali: Taq’wa and the Account

I advise you, O' servants of Allah, to heed Allah because heeding Him is His right over you, and through it, it creates your right over Him. Seek Allah's help in Taq’wa to assist you by it on meeting Him.

Fearing of Allah is a protection and a shield, and for the Hereafter it is the road to Heaven. The Heeding path is without blemish and its implementer truly gains, and the one who holds to it should closely guard it.

Heeding Allah had presented itself to the people who had already passed and to those coming after for their need to it for the morrow (Day of Judgment) ─when Allah will revive His creation again, take back what He has given, and take into account of what He has bestowed.

In Sermon 195, Ali: about Piety

Fear Allah, for it is the rein and mainstay. To its salient points hold fast, and to its realities take shield.

It will take you to abodes of easiness, sites of comfort, fortresses of safety, and premises of honor on the Day of Judgment:─

When in apprehension the eyes will be fixed, darkness all round, when even groups of pregnant she camels roam the grazing, and when the Trumpet will be blown, then every living would die, silent are voices, the high mountains and hard rocks crumble so they turn into drifting sand leveling their bases.

It is then that there will be none to intercede and no relation to ward off trouble, and no excuse will be of avail.

Take shield in fearing Allah for it has an unfaltering rope and whose pinnacle is quite high.

Consider death and its pangs and do good works; prepare for its approach, since the ultimate end is the Day of Judgment.

Suffice this preaching for one who understands and a lesson for one who knows not! Be reminded before reaching your end, ─of the tightness of grave, the hardship of loneliness, fear of the passage to the next world, the pangs of fright, the tightness of the chest, the deafness of ears, the darkness of the grave, fear of the promised punishment, the distress of the grave and the laying of stones?

In Sermon 230, Ali: Urging about PietyThe fear of Allah is the key to guidance,

provision for the next world, freedom from every bondage, and deliverance from all ruin. Through it its seeker succeeds, and its holder to safety can escape, and by it a person achieves his aims.

Perform the good deeds, for such acts will elevate, and repentance will promote, and prayer can be heard, ─while conditions are quiet and the register of the two angels are recording.

Hasten towards the virtuous before old age, lingering illness, or the snatching of death.

For death ends enjoyments, mars your pleasures and undoes your target, it is an unwanted visitor, an invincible adversary and an un-accounting killer.

Now then, I advise you to heed Allah, Who had created you first and foremost; and to Him is your return, and with Him lies the achievement of your aims, and to Him are your final wishes, and towards Him you aim your path, and in Him you seek protection from your tribulations and mishaps.

Fear of Allah is the medicine for your hearts’ ailments, the sight for the spirits’ blindness, the cure for your infirmity, the rectifier of the misdeeds of your hearts, the purifier of the defilement of your minds, the illumination for your sights, the consolation for the fright of your selves, and the brightness for the gloom of your ignorance.

In Sermon 183, Ali: Ali: Urges to PietyAllah has enjoined Taq’wa and made it

the highest point to please Him, and all that He requires from His creatures. So fear Allah, whom you are as if facing Him, and your forelocks are in His grip, and even your change of position is in His control.

If you conceal a matter, He will know it and if you disclose a matter, He will record it, ─for this He has appointed honored angels who tread not on a rightful matter nor increment a bad one without its register.

Know that he who fears Allah, Allah would get him out of it and grant him a way out of sedition, and light out of the dark, and will keep him in the condition he wishes,….
