Quilt Show 2013 Report

Some Rules to Play By: 1. Entry deadline is March 20, 2013. This doesn’t mean your quilt is finished but that:

a) you have made a commitment to be finished on time for the Quilt Show b) you have completely filled in the “Call to Entry” Form and sent it in with a coloured picture/sketch of your quilt c) you have given your quilt to the Depot Captain in your area by the determined date. A Depot Captain will call you to discuss. The photo of your quilt is necessary in order to assist in planning where the quilts will be hung at the show.

2. Must be a member in good standing – Member as of September 2012.

3. Use ONE entry form for EACH item. Please PRIORITIZE your quilts as we may need to place limits if space

is an issue, but enter several for selection. Use the top right space on form to prioritize. 4. Each submission MUST be delivered in a separate clear plastic bag (generic bag, please). These may not be the same one you receive your quilt back in. 5. Each submission must have an identifying label sewn on it on the back of the quilt (with your name and phone number) and at least a 3” wide hanging sleeve attached to the top. 6. No quilt can be submitted that has been shown in a previous Nanaimo Quilt Show. 7. The size of your quilt that you indicate on the Entry Form must be adhered to. The Hanging Committee plan and organize the layout of the Quilt Show according to your information submitted. 8. Copyright Rules must be followed. 9. The receipt you receive from the Depot Captain must be submitted to claim your quilt after the show. Keep track of these slips, please.

10. Pick up time, after the show, is 6 pm. THERE IS NO PROVISION FOR RELEASING QUILTS PRIOR TO THE CLOSING OF THE SHOW. Only the official Take-Down Committee will be allowed in the hall. 11. Mail or submit entries to: Jill Coulthard, 723 Nicol Street, Nanaimo, V9R 4V2. If there are any questions, please call 250-753-5365 or email Jill at [email protected] 12. There will be an assigned area at the Guild Meetings to deposit your “Call To Enter” Forms.

My name is Gwen and I work at Dufferin Place seniors home in Nanaimo. I have been working with residents putting together a patch work quilt. I was wondering if someone you know would loan us a quilting frame. So residents in wheelchairs can work on stitching the quilt together. If not can you direct me to someone that can help me. Please email me at [email protected] Thank you

NOTICE OF MOTION It was moved by Ginette Schewe and seconded by Lorna Craig that we present to the

Guild the plan to create of a “Member’s Only” section on the Guild website. Motion

carried.

This motion will appear in the October Newsletter to be voted on at the November

Guild meeting.

Newsletter Advertising The Guild was informed that in order to keep our advertisers interested in placing ads in our Newsletter, the Guild members need to inform the stores that they visit that they are from the Nanaimo Quilt Guild.

That they are shopping there in response to their ads. If our advertisers stop putting in ads, this will affect our revenue. Trish

Donation Quilt Committee Report

September 2012 Welcome back everyone, we’re looking forward to another busy and successful year of gathering and giving quilts to those in need throughout our community. At September’s meetings we received 16 quilts of various sizes from members so we are off to a good start already. Last year we gave out more than 170 quilts, as well as those that went to Haven Society from the Quilt Bee. There is a need for preemie size quilts, baby and child quilts, lap quilts and wheelchair quilts. For more information on quilt sizes and requirements please go to the Donation Quilts section on the Guild website. You can access the page under the Membership icon. It seems the easiest thing to forget is the last thing we need to do before handing in a donation quilt…… sew on a label! There are several ways to deal with the sewing on of labels. You can select a label from us before your quilt is finished so it can be sewn on at home. Or you can choose to make your own label with materials you have at home. The wording on our labels, if you’d like to use something similar, is “Made with care by the Nanaimo Quilter’s Guild”. Your third option is to sew a label on during the meeting. We have needles, thread and labels at the Donations table for you to use. Each quilt we send out needs a label so the recipients know where the quilts are from. It means a lot to them to know these quilts are handmade by

caring women in their own community. And now, for a bit of extra good news; we have been given, by Sharon Henderson, manager of the Red Barn Quilt Shops in Courtenay, Campbell River and Duncan, a roll of Hobbs Heirloom batting for use in donation quilts. This is a generous gift and we are grateful to Sharon and Red Barn Quilt Shops for this contribution to our cause. For our part, as Guild members, it would be nice when we are in Courtenay, Campbell River or Duncan, to stop in for a look to see if they have anything we may be in need of, and don’t we quilters always need a little something to finish a project? Please also mention that you are from our Guild so they are aware that we appreciate what they have given us to use in comfort quilts for the community. Our secretary is also sending out a thank-you note on the Guild’s behalf. And that wraps up our report for September. It was nice to see familiar faces at the meeting and be able to catch up with those we haven’t seen for several months. Christine Hustins, Donation Quilts Chair, [email protected]

QUILT BEE 2013

Oliver Woods…Saturday, January 26, 2013…9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Remember all those ads of a few years ago about, “Participaction”? And we know you’re going to respond with, “no, no, no…they were talking about exercise!” Too much work, too much sweat, too little benefit. How would you like to exercise…the easy way!?

Join us at the Quilt Bee and we promise you will get your exercise. And by ‘exercise’ we don’t just mean the 11 muscles it’s taking you to read this. Basting…bending…cutting…ironing...laughing…lifting…pinning…smiling…stitching…stretching…twisting…turning…walking ...and who knows what all else you will exercise! Not to mention the “feel good” exercise of making a quilt for Haven House. Join us for some exercise! Quilt Bee Committee - Carole Phinney, Vicki Zoltay, Marlene Jones P.S. Our batting is being cut at 45” x 60” and the backing are cut in various sizes. The “curtain / drapery” fabric is 54” wide and we’ve tried for 64” long.

The Food Bank

At the September afternoon meeting, we filled six tightly-packed boxes with a wide variety of food items for the Food Bank, a surprising amount considering that the door-to-door collection had taken place just days earlier. Pat yourselves on the back!

Last month I omitted “Canned Beans” from the list of staples suggested by the Food Bank. Perhaps you could add this to your list. At the last meeting, a member pointed out the importance of checking out the Nutrition label on drinking boxes, specifically the sugar content. More on this later. Paper products, including toilet tissue, paper towels, and facial tissues, obviously not “food items” are a requirement of families and are distributed with the food bags. I hope you and your families have a joyful Thanksgiving, and that the clients of the Food Bank have full tummies on that day!

Quilt Show Call to Entry Report

An overview of the Call to Entry form was presented identifying key areas on how to fill it out. The form must be completely filled out or the committee will need to call you. The deadline for submission is March 20, 2013. The “Call to Entry” form and “Some Rules to Play By” are both on the Home page of the website. Another review will be done in January.

In order to have uniformity of plastic bags (each quilt must be delivered in a large clear plastic bag), the Depot Captains will be selling the bags for $.25each at the Guild meetings.

A Big THANK YOU

To Sandra Hreno for her great work on the newsletter last year and for her generous and patient help and good humour while I scaled the steep learning curve of being the newsletter editor. Susan – the neophyte editor.....

Retreat November 12 - 16th, 2012 This year’s Retreat is almost upon us. The dates again are Nov. 12 – 16 at Homewood on Quadra Island. Thanks to all who made this year’s Retreat “a GO”. It is going to be a time for doing what we all enjoy and not have to worry about meals, grocery shopping or cleaning. We will all just indulge in doing what we love and doing with others that enjoy the same, in and atmosphere that is beautiful and serene right on the water, a great little get away. Could it be any better? Now if this makes you want to come join us, there is space left. The cost is $205.00 for the basic accommodations for 4 days or $250.00 for a shared room with a bathroom. All you have to do is contact me, Dona-Mae at [email protected] or call 250 740 0072.

A reminder for everyone that has registered, final payment is due Oct 17, at the Guild meeting. A big Thanks to those who were able to help us out by paying early in September. See you in October, and may your Threads never tangle.

DID YOU KNOW? - ‘The Gifts of Food’

This fall marks the start of the fifth year that the Guild will be collecting non-perishable food items for our local food bank, Loaves and Fishes. But did you know the Guild has a long history of collecting and donating food? Sadly, it was never recorded as to who or how the idea came about, but a suggestion appeared in the November 1987 Newsletter inviting members to bring one tin of food to the December Pot Luck dinner. These items would be donated to the Salvation Army Christmas Hamper Fund. The response was overwhelming, and the members decided to continue with the “Christmas Tradition” for the next 13 years. In September 2000, the Guild was approached by one of its past members, Virginia Brucker, who offered the use of her book that she had written, “Gift Of The Heart,” to use as a Charity Fund raiser. The books were sold at the October and November meetings and raised over $130.00, which was donated along with food and

toys to the Salvation Army Christmas Fund. In the fall of 2001, while delivering comfort quilts, some of the members heard the needs of the Nanaimo Family Life Association and Haven House. Both groups were desperately trying to collect food and gift items for Christmas Hampers. The members decided to help these two agencies, Norma Franks and the Programme Committee volunteered to oversee the project. They proposed to make Christmas Gift bags filled with small gifts for a child or teen. Members were asked to make a fabric bag or bring a gift worth $5 to $10. The Pot Luck dinner had been moved to January (on a trial basis), so the December meeting would be the perfect time to fill and finish the bags. Food would also be collected for the hampers. By the end of the meeting, 147 gift bags were filled, and the food was divided between the two groups. These agencies were very appreciative of the gifts. In 2002, the local newspapers carried stories about the Loaves and Fishes Food Bank and about their struggle to find food to fill both the shelves and Christmas hampers. This lead to a decision that the food collected at the Pot Luck dinner would go to them. Loaves and Fishes greatly appreciated our donation, and so they continued to receive our Christmas

donations for the next seven years. In 2008, the local newspapers again were filled with pleas from the food bank – shelves were empty, donations were down, but the demand for basic food needs had grown. In the November Newsletter, Norma Franks put forth a suggestion for thought – what would the members think of doing a monthly donation to the food bank instead of just our annual one at Christmas? In response to her suggestion, more than 70 food items were turned in at the meeting. The members loved the idea, and a suggestion list of items that the food bank could use appeared each month in the Newsletter and is still printed today and can be found in the Food Bank Report section in this issue. We would like to thank the members for their continued support to this cause.

What Is An Art Quilt?

This is one of the categories you may enter your quilts into at the Show. Art Quilts may also be called "Original Work" as these must be your own design, not derived or adapted from any existing work in any medium. It can be any size, shape or style: abstract, pictorial

or originally interpreted traditional (using blocks and/or patterns in the public domain). You may create your own fabric and include any form of surface design such as painting or print making, plus use of mixed media. Do have fun with this category. Judith McLaughlin, Chair, Ballot Committee

Wendie Harrington – CQA Rep

How Far Can We Stitch Challenge? We’re off and running, well really stitching, our way across the country. Our guild members stitched a whopping 16, 136 inches in September. This will be a good time to get out those UFO’s and finish them up. It’s a long way across this big country even with all the guilds participating. Let’s make next month’s total even higher. To make things easier try to have your projects measured and recorded before the meeting. Forgotten totals can be emailed to me at [email protected]. You can send dimensions (e.g 40 x 60) or totals. If you do totals don’t forget to add in all sides. Each placemat you make adds 60 inches to our total! For a break from sewing why not check out the CQA blog at http://cqacanadianquilting.blogspot.ca/ ? It is updated weekly

and is an interesting quick read.

Christmas Gift Bags

We will be collecting Christmas gift bags for young people in 4 programs of Nanaimo Youth Services Association; those who live in the 20 unit Youth Housing (these are all under 19 years old, many are single moms attending school); young people under 19 who live in the community on their own with support from NYSA’s Supported Living staff and the Ministry of Children & Family Development; the downtown One Stop Drop-In program for at risk street and homeless youth; and CAP, a one-on-one program for young people with multiple issues, including substance abuse, who are working to improve their lives. Last Christmas, thanks to your generosity, we were able to provide 130 gift bags (which were pillowcases) and 96 pillows. Bags can be sewn (preferable), or plastic, approximately 8" x 12" or larger (sewn pillowcases are still welcome this year!). We also accept items for the bags on their own, either individual items or in bulk, and cash to purchase items.

Bags will be accepted at the November meeting, and the December potluck dinner.

Suggested items for the bags include the following. We try to put toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and shampoo in each bag as a priority. No lottery or scratch & win tickets pleases, most of these young people are under 19.

I had a request from a lady whose neighbour’s daughter received a Preemie donation quilt. She was born in Nov 1999.

They would like to enhance the quilt and if possible add the name of the individual who made it.

I had asked at the Guild meeting and it was suggested that we put the pictures in the Newsletter.

If anyone has information on this quilt – please contact me.
