DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, APRIL 20 In a significant develop- ment, the state govern- ment has decided to post college-wise Intermediate examination results on the Board of Intermediate Education website from this year. The move is an effort to check trumped-up claims about the results of stu- dents made by corporate and private junior col- leges across the state. Plans are afoot to extend the facility to schools to enable parents to know school-wise SSC results. There was no provision till now for the public to know the results of each college and verify which institutions the toppers are from, or whether a particular college has secured 100 per cent result. The parents of stu- dents have no option but to rely on publicity and media advertisements issued by the college man- agements. By posting the results of each college on the website, the govern- ment hopes that the public could make correct deci- sions during the admis- sion season. Mr K. Parthasarathi, mi- nister for secondary edu- cation, explained: “We have seen an unhealthy competition among corpo- rate and private junior colleges over the last few years. The college man- agements falsely claim that their students achieved top ranks, and also publicise about achieving 100 per cent results to attract more applications.” Move to check false ‘topper’ claims Centre delays COP11 preparations DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, APRIL 20 State government officials are waiting anxiously, a touch nervous and a tad restless, as the Centre is yet to finalise the professional conference organiser for the upcoming International Conference of Parties on Biodiversity(COP11). While the event will be held between October 1 and 9 at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre, no preparatory work has started yet, thanks to the ambiguity over the conference organ- iser. But even then, officials said, the Union ministry of forests and environment has kept the state on its toes regarding preparations. According to officials, committees formed to look into various details of the global conference, especial- ly reception, food, accom- modation, stage-manage- ment, side events and exhi- bitions, cannot begin work in the interim. The civic body’s city beau- tification projects are also yet to start, as the Centre is yet to sanction funds. A state government offi- cial involved in the arrangements said: “The Centre had called bids for the selection of the confer- ence organiser on January 2 this year. But the tenders are yet to be finalised. As a result, the state govern- ment is helpless. We cannot go ahead with the arrange- ments till the professional organiser is selected.” Over 5,000 participants from 193 countries and international organisa- tions are expected to attend the conference. DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, APRIL 20 The state excise depart- ment and some nation- alised banks threw caution to the wind and bent bank guarantee rules to favour liquor retail licencees, it has come to light. Retailers who provided bank guarantees to get licences have become a cru- cial link in Anti- Corruption Bureau’s ongo- ing probe into the liquor syndicate scam. Sources told this newspa- per that the excise depart- ment gave the kid-glove treatment to even cases where retailers submitted bank guarantees for inade- quate amounts. The banks, meanwhile, were too eager to provide guarantees with- out safeguarding their own interests, the sources added. Inquiries by investigating agencies have revealed that in several cases bank offi- cials were suspended after retailers defaulted licence fees to the excise depart- ment, forcing the latter to invoke the bank guarantee. The banks took a drubbing due to this lack of safe- guard mechanism, officials said. Under rules, retailers are required to pay the first installment and provide bank guarantee for the remaining amount. GUARANTEE RULES BROKEN BY BANKS Narayana, Chaitanya students top Students of Sri Chaitanya and Narayana Groups topped the state in Intermediate first year, emerging top- pers in MPC and BiPC streams respectively. Narayana student N. Sandhya created a record by secur- ing highest-ever marks, 437 out of 440, in BiPC to top the state, accord- ing to information. Four students from Sri Chaitanya Group - V. Deepika, Avala Akhila, P.S.S. Lakshman and B. Likitha - emerged toppers with 466 out of 470 in MPC stream. In MEC stream, Sri Chaitanya students A. Nikhil and K. Prudhvi Raj got 488 out of 500. College-wise Inter results on BIE site DC CORRESPONDENT HYDERABAD, APRIL 20 Telangana districts have lagged behind in the Inter first year results announced on Friday. Lecturers blame it on the Sakala Janula Samme in the T-region, which forced colleges to shut down for over 40 days during September and October 2011. The two districts that fared badly in the Inter exams, in fact, they were right at the bottom of the results table, are Mahbubnagar, with a pass percentage of 37 and Nizamabad, with a pass percentage of 38. Meanwhile the districts that came in at the top were from the Andhra region, such as Krishna (71 per cent), Visakhapatnam (65 per cent) and Nellore (61 per cent). Barring Ranga Reddy (63 per cent) and Hyderabad (55 per cent) districts, the remaining eight districts in the T- region fell short of the stipulated average pass percentage of 53.75. “The colleges located in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts were not hit as badly as colleges located in other T-dis- tricts during the period of the strike. The city colleges could work most of the days during period of the strike, while the colleges in other T-dis- tricts remained com- pletely closed in support of the T-strike,” said Shankar Samala of the Telangana Junior Colle- ges Association.
