It was a successful start to this year, which saw Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School receive a positive report from Ian Middleton HMI after his most recent Monitoring Inspection.The report clearly highlights continued growth, consistency and school improvements and we continue to tackle these areas to ensure we become a ‘Good’ school. The report acknowl-edged improvements in the following areas:

• Raised the standards attained by pupils;• Improved pupils’ attendance;• Increased the proportion of good and out-

standing teaching;• Widened the roles and responsibilities that

pupils develop;• Strengthened the impact of senior and middle

leaders.I am pleased with this report as it highlights the collaborative work of the students, staff, parents, governors and our wider community including our parishes and feeder schools. It is clear from our external visits that the systems we have established over the past two years con-tinue to have a greater impact and are enhancing the lives of students, parents and staff alike. It is a school which continues to have a positive and outward looking approach as we use the school’s vision to constantly strive for quality and excel-lence in all that we do.

I would also like to acknowledge the support of our parents. This term we have held parent sup-port evenings and, once again, attendance has increased. All parents’ evenings have had high

attendances, over 95%. However, I would like to acknowledge our Year 7 students who achieved 100%. It is clear that the NBS community is firmly aspirational and, with our parental support, the school continues to flourish. The new staff who joined the school in January have made a significant contribution. This is due to their experience, professionalism and pas-sion for our children and our school. They have reinforced our dynamic and motivated staff and are sharing their good practices with other colleagues.

Another new initiative which the school has introduced is Public Speaking. On Friday 26th February 2016, we hosted the final of The Three Catholic Schools Public Speaking Challenge. We invited teams from The John Henry Newman Catholic School in Stevenage and St Michael’s Catholic High School in Watford to compete in this event. This initiative has not only brought students from other local catholic schools together to represent their school, but gave our selected students the opportunity to develop an impor-tant life skill.Three local luminaries were invited along to judge the competition, including Anne Main MP, Member of Parliament for St Albans; Monsignor Canon Harry Turner, Dean of St Albans Catholic Deanery, and Eve Millman, Director at recruit-ment company Tate and current Hertfordshire Business Person of the Year. I would like to thank Dennis Cooper (Governor), Liz Hunt (Assistant Director of Sixth Form) and Musa Bukhari (Sixth Form student) for developing this project at NBS. Thank you also to the Catenian Association for supporting this competition.It was pleasing to see a large number of our community attend the NBS Race Night with a

difference and more recently our school pro-duction of ‘Hairspray’. These family fun packed nights brought the community together to acknowledge the talents of our students and the hard work and dedication of our staff. These

events were a resounding success and reinforced the sense of community which we continue to establish. I am grateful to those who supported these sell out evenings. My Reflection on this term relates to the reports from external visitors which highlights our school improvements. Our parents are supportive of the school and our reputation in the wider commu-nity continues to flourish. It is pleasing to note that our pupil numbers for next year have greatly increased and we welcome our new families as they begin the transitional programme to help them feel truly part of this community. Our students and staff have become resilient, con-fident and consistent in their approach in work-ing at Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School. There is a real sense of pride in our community and I have no doubt this will grow as we continue to succeed. I am incredibly proud to be Headteacher of Nicholas Breakspear School as the perception is getting closer to the reality.Finally, I wish you and your family a happy and Holy Easter and thank you for your continued support.

Public Speaking Challenge Contestant


Well done to the Year 7-10 students who secured awards in the Spring Term Celebration Success Assemblies.

The termly Celebration Success Assemblies took place in the period 16-18th March 2016. It was yet again really wonderful to see so many students get certificates and lapel badges for their hard work and dedication so far this term. Please note that the Year 11 and 6th Form Celebration Success Assemblies will take place in April 2016.

A record number of certificates and lapel badges were given out based on:

• Progress made since the Autumn term for Year 7-10. Students were awarded if they had made progress in 7 or more subjects in Year 7-9 and 4 or more subjects in Year 10.

• Positive attitude to learning in classwork and homework. Students were awarded if they had an average of 1.8 or lower in the recent attitude to learning scores for classwork and home-work in the spring term report.

• 100% Attendance to date. Students were awarded if they attended school everyday from September to February half term. Certificates were also issued to those who had secured 100% attendance in the 1st half of the spring term.

Pope Francis has asked that the Worldwide Catholic Community

mark a jubilee Year of Mercy from 8th December 2015 – 20th November 2016. At the ceremony to mark the start of this special year, Pope Francis said:‘Let us be renewed by God’s mercy and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish.’Pope Francis has constantly stressed God’s mercy throughout his short time as Pope and so he has decided to declare a year when we remember that our God is a God of mercy, a God of love and compassion, a God who forgives all and always forgives. Pope Francis said when he announced the Year of Mercy that ‘God’s mercy is for everyone, no one is excluded.’ The motto for this Year of Mercy is ‘Merciful like the Father.’ Pope Francis said that this ‘serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn, but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure.’Accepting Pope Francis’ invitation for the Year of Mercy is an incredible oppor-tunity to grow and is an invitation to:

• Experience the mercy of God.

• Show mercy to others.

All members of the Nicholas Breakspear Community will be given the chance to respond to the invitation in a variety of ways.

Experience the Mercy of God

The mercy of God is open to everyone through the sacrament of reconciliation. Each member of the School Community will be given the opportunity to access the beauty of the sacrament throughout this special year. Years 7, 8 and 9 have already been given the opportunity dur-ing the season of Lent. We are extremely

grateful to our priest chaplains who have given up their valuable time to enable our Community to experience the mercy of God in this powerful way. During the jubilee year each form will also visit the Oratory for a special service of mercy and enter through the NBS door of mercy. The door is made up of commit-ment cards from our community stating how they will be more merciful during this special year.

Show Mercy to Others

At various points throughout our school year students respond to the call to show mercy to others via charitable giving. KISS and the St Vincent de Paul society benefitted in the lead up to Christmas.The Borehamwood food bank will ben-efit from the show mercy to others, dur-ing the season of Lent. All students spent time in a PSHE session coming to an

understanding of how contributing to the foodbank was applying the social teaching of the church and living out the message of the parable of the sheep and the goats:‘Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’The Year 12 Justice and Peace group have produced a wonderful display, which shows how going without some simple everyday items such as a bar of chocolate or a can of drink can make a real difference to those using the foodbank. I invite you to spend a moment to reflect on this question: “How will we be able to be merciful like the father to those who we encounter in our lives?”

Celebrating the Year of Mercy Lets Proclaim God’s Mercy

W e welcomed England and Saracens rugby star Chris Ashton as our guest

of honour on Thursday, 7th January for the school’s Presentation Evening. This evening was designed to recognise our students’ academic success. Chris Ashton presented certificates and trophies to students who succeeded in their GCSEs, AS Levels and A Levels last year. Head Girl, Nicole Kelly, commented, “He spoke of his own experiences through school and rugby and noted that it took a lot of hard work to achieve his sporting success. He encouraged students to remain determined and passionate in order to fulfil their potential. He was a very humble man who made a great guest of honour due to his honest words of advice and enthu-siastic approach to the evening”. Deputy Head

Boy, Declan Crummey, added: “It was inspir-ing to have such a professional sportsman at our school. He is a role model to all of us and his work ethic is influential to all pupils.” Awards were given to more than 150 students who contributed to the school’s successful results, which included a 100 per cent pass rate at A Level. Three students received special awards due to their exceptional results. The headteacher’s award was given to Bethany Hyne for achieving three A*s in her A Levels, she is now studying History at Durham University. The Cannon Keenan Cup was presented to Year 12 student Ellie Corroyer for achieving 9 A*s and A’s in her GCSE results and the Jane Giles Cup was awarded to Luke Welch for his academic endeavour.

Nicole Kelly nominated for Mayor’s Pride Award

O n Tuesday 15th March 2016 Nicole Kelly (Head Girl), for her service to the community, became a finalist at the Mayor’s

Pride Awards, which took place in St Albans. Nicole had been nominated because she has been instrumental in helping sup-port the many positive changes that have taken place at NBS. She has developed into a fine public speaker and speaks passion-ately about her school. Nicole is an outstanding role model for all students and many of the younger students are now inspired to be the next head girl.

Nicole works closely with the Student Leadership Team, who have recently returned from Uganda working with the charity KISS. KISS stands for Kiddies Support Scheme and they raise funds to help provide health and education for many disadvan-taged children. Since returning from Uganda, Nicole and the team have worked tirelessly to support and raise awareness for this important cause.

To date, she has orchestrated whole school initiatives and has raised over £8500. Nicole and the team helped to unite the school and have built up own community. Social justice is high on her agenda and contributes to our school’s ethos.

Nicole is also one of our press officers and writes articles on behalf of the school. Many of her stories have been published and have made an impact to our school and the reputation.

Stunning Gym & Danceperformance impresses

Hosted by our Head Boy and Head Girl, the Gym and Dance display once again proved to be a resounding success. Pupils from all year groups contributed to an amazing evening which showcased the true talent that our students behold.From whole class vaulting and gymnastics, boys and girls in Years 7 and 8 performed to music from Michael Jackson and Mission Impossible. Both individual and duo acts show-cased theirs talents in gym-nastics, baton twirling, dance and tap. The variety on dis-play was fantastic to see.

The students showed their dedication by working extremely hard to make sure that their performances were outstanding. A surprise final act saw the teachers practice what they preach by performing an excellent dance to a medley of songs such as Thriller, show-ing the school how to really ‘shuffle’! Well done to all who partici-pated, be prepared to get your tickets early for next year, as it is already shaping up to be even bigger and better than this year!!

Hairspray ReviewI was delighted to have the opportunity to see the Nicholas Breakspears 2016 perfor-mance of ‘Hairspray’. Hairspray is a hugely popular, notoriously upbeat, entertaining musical that is set in the 1960’s and follows one girls dream is to integrate people of all races on TV. It was wonderful to see the different year groups, ranging from Year 7 to 13, come together to produce this perfor-mance. Even more wonderful was seeing the Year 7 students taking on lead roles. The acting was remarkable, with the lead role of Tracy Turnblad being played by Beatriz Almada. It was clear to see that the

casting and directing was well thought out by Miss Squires.The music was amazing, the vocals spec-tacular, the audience were clearly engaged and enjoyed themselves immensely. Mrs Mead did a fantastic job, along with the band, to conduct brilliant live music that got the whole crowd singing along. Well done to all the cast, band and tech crew for their hard work. Also a very special thank you to Miss Squires and Mrs Mead, without whom them the play wouldn’t be possible. In our form we have been planting winter plants. We have all contrib-uted to watering, planning and feed-ing our plants. In our groups we first put soil in, then we carefully removed the plants from the pots and placed them in a better and bigger container. Afterwards, we gave them some food and watered them. We are now watch-ing them and taking care of them so they grow healthy and strong! We thank Mr Short for helping us.Weronika Stelmaszuk 7L

We will be selling tomato plants after Easter when it is warm enough for them to be planted out. The varie-ties we will have are Moneymaker, Gardener’s Delight and Alicante.Between the Easter holidays and May half term we shall have bedding plants of various types for sale. We will also be selling beeswax polish.

Teams from The John Henry Newman Catholic School in Stevenage and St Michael’s Catholic High School in Watford were invited to compete in this event. Three talented Sixth Form stu-dents were selected from each school and each had four minutes to speak on a topic of their choice in front of an audience of Year 12 students from Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School. Topics ranged from Donald Trump to Social Media.

Three local luminaries were invited along to judge the competition, including Anne Main MP, Member of Parliament for St Albans; Monsignor Canon Harry Turner, Dean of St Albans Catholic Deanery; and Eve Millman, Director at recruitment com-pany Tate and current Hertfordshire Business Person of the Year. The judges gave constructive feedback to each con-testant, in what was an extremely high calibre field, and also scored them inde-pendently. After all contestants had delivered their speeches, judges were asked to combine their scores to decide the overall winning team. In a fantas-tic result, Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School and The John Henry Newman School came joint first, with exactly

the same number of points from the three judges. The overall winning team was decided by a tie breaker and the judges chose to award The Three Catholic Schools Public Speaking Challenge Shield to the team containing their favourite speaker

– The John Henry Newman Catholic School. This was an amazing competit ion which was supported by the Catenian Association and highlighted the tal-ents of many of the young people in our schools today. The students from the three schools all spoke clearly and confidently about topics they felt pas-sionate about. Staff and students from the respective schools were extremely proud of their achievement. Nicholas

Breakspear Catholic School is now devel-oping Public Speaking throughout the younger years in the school, with internal competitions as well as challenging other local schools. We are also looking forward to the second Three Catholic Schools Public Speaking Challenge next year.

NBS Sporting Review The Spring term has again highlighted sporting achievement throughout the school in a variety of sports, culminating in an epic county cup final for the Year 11s in Basketball. Our football teams per-formed to their usual high standard, with a stand-out result by Year 8, who made it to the Semi Final of the District Cup. A lot of effort, commitment and character was shown by our Year 8 and 9 Netball teams; I look for-ward to developing this potential next season. We look forward to the summer term and the com-mencement of Athletics, Rounders and Cricket.PE Department

VolleyballFive Year 10 Boys were runners up in the county volleyball tournament. They played four games throughout the tournament, winning three of them comfortably. The biggest challenge came in the final game when they played Stanborough School, who are a well drilled team. The boys held their own throughout the game and won some well-played attacking points, but in the end were unlucky and lost. This resulted in the team finishing second in tournament. Well done to the players: Daniel Kelly, Albert Irabor, Callum Noonan, Kuda Kupakuwana and Miles Dumba.

BasketballThe Year 11 basketball team have just finished a phenomenal season in the Hertfordshire County League. They have been dedicated and passionate, training most lunchtimes to develop as a team. They won all their group stage games except one which meant that they played Sandringham in the semi-final, which they won.The Final took place at St Columba’s College, where they played Beaumont School. The game was thrilling to watch, with both teams taking the lead numerous times. The result came down to the last few seconds and unfortunately Beaumont managed to steal the game to win with a score of 72-68.It is still a huge achievement for the Year 11 Boys, who beat over 90 schools in the county to get to The Final.
