Three Tide Golfers Earn SEC Post-

season Awards Alabama men’s golfers Bud Cauley and Cory Whitsett were named fi rst-team All-SEC while freshman Bobby Wyatt was a second-team choice. Whitsett was also named the SEC Fresh-man of the Year and was joined by Wyatt on the All-Freshman team. It is the third straight year for Cauley to earn fi rst-team All-SEC honors after winning SEC Freshman of the Year accolades in 2009. He joins Steve Lowery as the only UA players to be se-lected to the SEC’s fi rst team three times. Cauley has seven top-10 fi nishes with a victory at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Classic. He also leads the team and ranks second nationally with a 70.52 scoring average. Whitsett is just behind Cauley with a 70.96 stroke average to rank fourth in the SEC and 10th nationally. He captured his fi rst win at the Linger Longer Invitational where he shot a career-low 13-under-par 203 to edge Cauley by one stroke. He is just the second Tide player (Cauley) to earn fi rst-team All-SEC honors as a true freshman. Wyatt, missed three tournaments leading up the SEC Championship, has a 71.57 stroke aver-age, which ranks eighth in the SEC. He boasts three top-fi ve showings, including a runner-up fi nish at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.

Tide Faces Tough Draw As the case with any NCAA Regional, the competition in Indiana fi gures to be stiff , as 10 of the 14 teams competing are ranked in the top-60 according to the Golfweek/Sagarin Rat-ings Index, including fi ve in the top 26. Second-seeded Illinois is ranked 11th nationally, while the No. 3-seeded Iowa Hawkeyes rank 18th nation-ally by Golfweek. Regional three-seed Stanford is ranked 21st, followed by Wake Forest (26th), Tennessee (23rd), Indiana (37th), Florida State (41st), Michigan (53rd) and Charlotte (59th).

High Ranking Individuals The Crimson Tide’s lineup features three the nation’s top golfers in junior Bud Cauley and freshmen Cory Whitsett and Bobby Wyatt. Cau-ley ranks sixth in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, while Whitsett is 10th and Wyatt is 25th.

Crimson Tide under Seawell Head Coach Jay Seawell has transformed Ala-bama in to perennial contender in his nine years at the Capstone. Since taking the Crimson Tide to NCAA Regionals during his fi rst year, 2003, this year’s trip marks the seventh straight and eighth in the last nine years. Four of those eight regional appearances resulted in top-6 fi nishes, including a second-place fi nish in 2007 and a fi rst place fi nish in 2009. Alabama claimed sixth place in 2008 and a tie for sixth in 2005. Seawell has taken four regional teams a step further to the NCAA Finals in the last six years (2005, 07-09). Alabama fi nished sixth in 2007, the best for a Seawell-coached team.

Named the University of Alabama’s head men’s golf coach on July 26, 2002, Jay Seawell has re-kindled the proud tradition of the Crimson Tide program and has quickly established Alabama as one of the elite programs in the country during his tenure in Tuscaloosa. In his ninth season at the helm of the Crimson Tide men’s golf program, Seawell has his teams routinely ranked among the top 10 in the country while leading UA to eight NCAA Tournament ap-pearances and four NCAA Championships berths - including four of the last six. With an infl ux of young talent that joined the likes of Bud Cauley and Hunter Hamrick on campus in 2010-11, Seawell’s Crimson Tide team is possibly his strongest yet at Alabama. Cauley has continued to be his dominant self, leading the Tide with a 70.52 scoring average that is the best single-season mark in school history. He won the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate and has seven top-10 fi nishes and 18 of 30 rounds under par. Freshmen Cory Whitsett, Bobby Wyatt and Trey Mullinax have stepped into the lineup as freshman and fl ourished. Whitsett, who boasts a 70.96 scor-ing average, was the SEC Freshman of the Year and joined Cauley as a fi rst-team All-SEC selection. Wyatt was a second-team All-SEC pick and owns a 71.57 stroke average. Mullinax joined the UA lineup on a full-time basis in the spring and has a 73.11 av-erage. Returning only two lettermen for the 2008-09 season, Seawell was presented one of his biggest challenges. The veteran coach responded with a squad that captured their fourth straight Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and boasted four medalists throughout the season. The win at the Jerry Pate was the program’s 15th in eight years under Sea-well’s guidance. Hunter Hamrick captured medalist honors at the JPNI and the Western Refi ning All-America Classic while tying for fi rst at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invita-tional on his way to honorable mention All-America honors. Bud Cauley set a new school record for scoring average at 71.32 while Hamrick fi nished

second on the team with an average of 72.88. Cau-ley also won the Isleworth Collegiate and the Linger Longer Invitational while garnering fi rst-team All-American honors. The 2009 team added a program fi rst to Sea-well’s resume with a victory at the NCAA Northeast Regional. It was the fi rst regional title for the Crim-son Tide’s men’s golf team and the club’s second win of the season. Seawell’s teams from 2007-09 fi nished sixth, 13th and 15th, respectively, in the NCAA Champi-onships while the 2008 team also captured the school’s fi rst Southeastern Conference Champion-ship since 1979. UA’s success over the past several years has energized the Tide’s alumni base and cre-ated an excitement for Alabama golf not seen in recent memory. The 2008-09 team fi nished with two tournament titles with wins at the Jerry Pate National Intercolle-giate and the NCAA Northeast Regional. Seawell’s fi ve-man team almost always included at least three freshmen and fi nished with a 292.06-round average. True freshman Bud Cauley garnered second-team PING All-America honors and fi rst-team hon-ors from Golfweek. He was also named fi rst-team All-SEC and the SEC Freshman of the Year. He won medalist honors at the United State Collegiate Championship while Hunter Hamrick was the med-alist at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Cauley was also a semifi nalist for the Ben Hogan Award and se-lected to play for the Americans at the 2009 Walker Cup and the 2009 Palmer Cup. Alabama’s 2007-08 team fi nished the season ranked No. 3 in the fi nal Golf World/NIKE Coaches poll and captured its fi rst Southeastern Conference golf championship in 29 years. Seawell’s success at Alabama has caught the attention and respect of his coaching peers who voted him the 2008 SEC Coach of the Year. His 2008 Tide team co-led the nation in team tournament championships with six wins. He has coached Alabama to 13 team tourna-ment championships and fi ve individual champi-onships in seven years, including four medalists in 2007-08. The team also set the school’s 54-hole record with the 810 it shot to win the 2007 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. His 2006-07 Alabama team made UA history, catapulting to the nation’s No. 1 ranking in all three collegiate polls in September of 2006 and holding on to the top spot in the Coaches’ poll from Sep-tember through early February of 2007. The team won four tournaments and set school scoring re-cords en route to a sixth-place fi nish at the NCAA Championship and a runner-up showing at the SEC Championships. Seawell is producing headline-worthy men, on the course and in the classroom. His golfers are among the most active in the Tuscaloosa commu-nity, volunteering their time at schools and helping host athletic department sponsored events for kids. In 2007-08, the golf team won both of the UA Ath-letic Department’s biggest awards, the Men’s Team with the Highest GPA and the Men’s Community Service Award. Golf produced six Academic All-SEC award win-ners in 2008. Joseph Sykora, was a three-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and was voted by the league’s golf coaches as the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for an SEC-record three times, winning in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2008, Sykora won both the SEC’s H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Award (all sports, all males in the league) and the University’s Bryant Award as its top

male student-athlete of any sport. Seawell has coached 11 All-Americans during his coaching career, including his latest, Michael Thompson in 2007 and 2008. In 2008 his Alabama golfers were nominated for the sport’s highest na-tional awards, including the Ben Hogan Award, the Jack Nicklaus Award and the Byron Nelson Award. Seawell arrived at the Capstone for the 2002-03 season and quickly established a formula for suc-cess. His fi rst Crimson Tide team fi nished sixth at the SEC Championships, after a ninth-place show-ing the year before. Alabama also qualifi ed for the NCAA East Regional, only the second appearance in the previous six seasons for the Tide. The 2003-04 season helped build the founda-tion for the coming years at Alabama. The Crimson Tide fi nished 11th at the SEC Championships, but captured its fi rst tournament team title with a win at the Conrad Rehling Invitational and proved it was building for the future. That future came quickly as the Crimson Tide qualifi ed for not only the NCAA Regionals in 2005, but fi nished tied for 28th at the NCAA Champion-ships. It was Alabama’s fi rst NCAA Championship appearance since the 1996 season. The Tide posted a sixth-place fi nish at the NCAA East Regional to qualify. The Crimson Tide again qualifi ed for NCAA re-gional play in 2006, fi nishing 14th at the NCAA West Regional. Alabama also recorded a third-place fi nish at the SEC Championships, its best at that time since a third-place showing in 1990. He began his coaching career at Anderson Col-lege where he coached from 1991-96, winning fi ve consecutive Region 10 championships. His work earned him fi ve Region Coach of the Year Awards. After briefl y leaving Anderson for another career pursuit, Seawell returned to coach Anderson again in 1997-98 then was hired by Augusta State as its head coach prior to the start of 1998-99 season. He led ASU to four straight NCAA Regional ap-pearances and three trips to the NCAA Champion-ships. Seawell’s 2001 team fi nished seventh at the NCAA Championships before turning in the best fi nish in school history the following year with a fi fth-place showing. He coached three All-Ameri-cans during his tenure at ASU, including two-time All-American Jamie Elson and All-American and former Ryder Cup player Oliver Wilson. Seawell is a 1988 graduate of the University of South Carolina. His degree is in hotel and restau-rant management. He lettered on the Gamecocks’ golf team and served as the president of USC’s Fel-lowship of Christian Athletes. Seawell and his wife, Stephanie, have three children: Brooke, Jackson and Lauren.

HOW IT WORKS

Each May, the NCAA hosts six regionals, which are spread around the country and provide for excit-ing golf from coast to coast. The six-regional format was started at the 2009 NCAA Championships and replaces the old three-regional system. Each of the six regional sites will qualify five teams for the NCAA Championship Finals, being held at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on May 31-June 5, 2011. Those 30 teams will then play 54 holes of stroke play, with the individual champion being declared at that point. The top-eight teams after the 54 holes of stroke play will then move on to match play and be seeded according to their finish in the stroke play portion. The No. 1 team will face the No. 8 team, No. 2 will face No. 7, No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5. The team that wins three rounds of match play will be crowned the national champion. Teams are selected for regional competition based upon their overall tournament finishes and head-to-head finishes against other teams that are in their region. Selection is made by a regional committee made up of head coaches. From 1989 through the 2008 NCAA Championships, the finals consisted of 72 holes of play with a cut after 54 holes to the top-15 teams.
