Take preventive measuresagainst floods

Monsoon wind is picking up these daysaccording to observations. Along Myanmar’scoastal line and in offshore areas, there willbe squalls sometimes and moderate to largewaves. There will more rainfalls in thenorthern parts of Myanmar as well as inLower Myanmar.

With heavy rainfall, it is likely that thewater level of Yangon River is above tidaldatum. Meteorology and HydrologyDepartment has announced that the water ofThanlwin River and Ngawun River mayreach danger level. Some towns and villagesmay see floods due to isolated heavy rain insome regions.

Preparedness measures should be takenin flood-prone regions to preventtransportation routes and houses from beingflooded. Preventive measures against floodsand natural disaster must be taken in parallelwith times. Preparations must be made tomaintain communication links and timelysupply food and medicine.

Flood-prone areas are to keep a watch onwhether or not the river water level is abovedanger Level. By setting up checkpoints, theymust keep a close watch along the river banks.

Taking flood warnings seriously, thoseareas are to stockpile and keep bags of sandand stones. Moreover, town and ward floodprevention groups and rescue and healthgroups need to be formed.

In addition, preventive measures must betaken on a constant basis as natural disaster,including floods, may fall at any time. Localadministrative bodies, social organizationsand local people are urged to work togetherfor preparedness against natural disaster.

KABUL, 1 July—Altogether 20 civilians were killed on Thursday afternoonin a mine explosion in southwestern Afghan Province, Nimroz, Afghanpolice officer told Xinhua.

The explosion broke out when a bus ran over a landmine on Thursdayafternoon in Khash Rod District, in the north of Nimroz Province with Zaranjas its provincial capital, some 790 km southwest of Afghan Capital Kabul.

“The ill-fated passenger bus hit a mine in Khash Rod District in theafternoon, leaving 20 dead and the driver injured,” Mohammed MusaRasuli, deputy police chief of Nimroz Provice told Xinhua reporter on Fridaynight.

“It is Taleban who planted the landmine,” the deputy police chief said.Afghan Taleban are frequently engaged in IED ( Improvised ExplosiveDevice) attack, always in the forms of suicide bombing and roadsidebombing.

ISLAMABAD, 1 July—At least twopeople were killed and 14 othersinjured in a blast late Thursday nightat a market place in Peshawar innorthwest Pakistan, reported localUrdu TV channel ARY.

According to the local mediareports, the blast took place at about9:30 pm local time inside a vehicle atthe Shoba market in downtownPeshawar.

Police have arrived at the sceneshortly after the explosion wasreported. The injured people have beenrushed to hospital.

Key colour pigmentfound in ancient

birdsMANCHESTER,1 July—An international

team of researchers using sophisticated x-ray technology has found chemical tracesof a key colour pigment in 100-millionyear old fossilized birds that once formedtheir feather patterns.

The study, reported Thursday in thejournal Science, provides a glimpse intothe biochemistry of prehistoric animalsand greater understanding of their dietsand environment.

Working at Stanford University’sNational Accelerator Laboratory inCalifornia, the author’s discoveredchemical traces of a pigment, known aseumelanin, that is one of the colouringagents responsible for brown eyes anddark hair in many modern species,including humans.

“This is a pigment that evolved avery, very long time ago, but is stillactively synthesized by organisms on theplanet,” said geochemist Roy Wogeliusof the University of Manchester, one of

the leaders of an international team thatreported the discovery.

“We found a way to map it andshow its presence over 120 million yearsof geological time passing,” he said.

“It is a direct relationship betweenyou, me, and some extremely oldorganisms.”

Using synchrotron radiation, theresearchers examined two fossilizedbirds, Confuciusornis sanctus, whichlived 120 million years ago, and had thefirst known bird-like beak, and Gansusyumenensis, considered the oldestmodern bird, which lived more than 100million years ago and looked a bit like amodern grebe, a type of freshwater divingbird.—Internet

LOS ANGELES, 1 July—What dolearning and running have in common?They seem to use the same brain waves

The pattern of brain waves, calledthe gamma rhythm, “is known to becontrolled by attention and learning,but we find it is also governed by howfast you are running,” said MayankMehta of the University of California,Los Angeles, a researcher in a newstudy involving mice. “This researchprovides an interesting link betweenthe world of learning and the world ofspeed.”

The gamma rhythm comes fromthe hippocampus, the part of the brainassociated with memory duringconcentration and learning. Thehippocampus records facts and eventsas they happen, holding them untilthey can be formed into long-termmemories during sleep. (Injuries tothe hippocampus result in damagedability to form new memories.)

The researchers studied the brain

waves of mice as they ran in the lab.Specific spikes in the brain’s electricalactivity — one way the brain cellscommunicate — seemed to show anincrease in the gamma rhythm as themice moved faster.

The researchers don’t know howthis might influence the learningprocess in the hippocampus.

“Deciphering the language of thebrain is one of the biggest challengesthat human beings face,” Mehta said.

Learning about how the brainworks can help researchersunderstand how the signals go awry,Mehta said. “If we can learn to interpretthese brain oscillations, it may bepossible to successfully intervene incases ranging from learning disordersto post-traumatic stress, or even tomitigate the effects of cognitive declinewith aging.”

appropriate for tourism industry. Archaeological regionssuch as Bagan, Mandalay, MraukU and so on,archaeological buildings and handicrafts attract thetourists. Likewise, Inlay Lake, Indawgyi Lake andsnow-capped Mount Khakaborazi are touristdestinations. Moreover, tourists can take relaxation atnatural beaches namely Chaungtha and Ngwehsaung.

Thus, the number of tourists paying visits toMyanmar has been increasing year by year. About800,000 tourists visited Myanmar in 2010 indicating a3.8 per cent increase when compared with the previousyear. Over 140,000 tourists arrived in Myanmar duringthe period from January to April this year, increasingover 30,000 more tourists than the same period of lastyear.

With the aim of achieving greater success in thetourism industry, the Ministry of Hotels and Tourismformed the Myanmar Tourism Board to do the worksin cooperation with the international travel entrepreneursand companies.

The Myanmar Tourism Board was constitutedwith 11 associations namely the Myanmar HoteliersAssociation, the Union of Myanmar Travels Association,the Myanmar Market Promotion Committee, theMyanmar Hotels and Tourism Skilled EmployeesAssociation, the Myanmar Tour Guides Association,the Myanmar Restaurant Entrepreneurs Association,the Myanmar Tourism Transport EntrepreneursAssociation, the Myanmar Tourism Souvenirs ShopsAssociation, the Myanmar Internal Tourism ServicesAssociation, the Myanmar Tourism Health and GeneralServices Association and the Myanmar Hotels andTourism Training Schools Association. The board wasformed with the aim of systematically developing hotelsand tourism services.

With a view to performing coordinated works forhotel services, a total of 11 hotel zones have beenformed in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan,Chaungtha, Ngwehsaung, Taunggyi (Inlay),Mawlamyine, Bago, Rakhine and Golden Triangleregions.

Of them, Nay Pyi Taw Hotel Zone is gainingdevelopment in leaps and bounds in a short period.There are 24 hotels in Nay Pyi Taw and plans are underway to build over 50 hotels. In 2006, the hotel servicecommenced its functions there with five hotels. Somehotels comprised about 30 rooms each and some 15

rooms each. At that time, the number of hotel roomscould not hit less than 100. During five years period, thehotel service gained progress significantly.

As Nay Pyi Taw is the capital of the nation, Statelevel ceremonies, ministerial ceremonies and internationallevel ceremonies are often held at hotels in the Nay PyiTaw Hotel Zone. Recently, hotel receptionist course,hotel room keeping course, beverages catering servicecourse and beverages production course were conductedfor enabling the hotel staff to become proficient staffmembers so as to provide accommodation services tothe guests. Opening the courses was aimed at turningout the skilled and proficient hotel staff. At present,arrangements are being made for conducting morecourses in Bagan Hotel Zone and other hotel zones.

In fact, the tourism industry is a business with theparticipation of the majority of private sector. Thegovernment is to adopt necessary policies, rules andregulations for coordination of smooth working processes.Most of the incomes from the industry flows into theprivate sector.

Better services play an important role indevelopment of tourism industry. Not only hotel servicebut also tourism service is necessary to provide betterservices to the guests for their convenient traveling andaccommodation. Better hotel services are to be combinedwith politeness and hospitality of Myanmar traditions.

In the past, the tourism service was run as aState-owned industry. By promulgating the law andbylaws, the people was allowed to freely engage in hotelservice, tourism service, transport service and tourguide service for 20 years. At present, there are over700 hotels and inns in 46 towns. Exactly, there are 22foreign invested hotels, four foreign joint venture hotels,nine State-owned hotels and 678 private-owned hotels,totaling 713 hotels that comprise 24,234 rooms. About700 tourism companies and over 4000 multi-languagetour guides come into service. In the past, the best hotelsin Yangon were Inya Lake Hotel, Thamada Hotel andthe Strand Hotel. Beginning 1992, the nationalentrepreneurs have built hotels, motels and inns. Now,over 180 hotels and inns can give service to the guestsat about 7600 rooms. Likewise, the hotels set the MasterPlans for hotel service, room service and constructionservices.

At the same time, remarkable progress can beseen in restaurant service, souvenir shop service, hotelsand tourism training schools and health care servicesrelated to the tourism industry.

However, the progress of tourism industry inMyanmar cannot be on a par with other countries. Visitsof tourists in neighbouring countries are more than thatof Myanmar yearly. As such, Myanmar sough theappropriate ways and means for development of hotelsand tourism industry.

At present, the Nay Pyi Taw Travel Mart & FoodShow is being held at the car parking of Nay Pyi TawThabyegon Market as part of efforts to promote hotelsand tourism services. The show will introduce touristdestinations and Myanmar foods to the foreign gemmerchants who are attending the Jade, Gems and PearlSpecial Sales 2011 at Mani Yadana Jade Hall in Nay PyiTaw. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Hotelsand Tourism, the Myanmar Tourism Board organizesthe show from 1 to 13 July for the first time in Myanmar.

Eleven associations under the Myanmar TourismBoard of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and 11hotel zones are promoting the hotels and tourismservices in their respective sectors. While the MyanmarTourism Board advertises prices of tour package, theMyanmar Market Promotion Committee announcessuitable tourist destinations and hotels with the use oftourist spots. Souvenirs shops also sell region-wisesouvenirs including Bagan ancient bronze works to beable to attract the guests.

Other countries are trying to win the interest offoreign tourists on traditional foods. Likewise, theshow introduces Myanmar traditional foods to theforeigners.

At the same time, hotel zones put landmarks ofthe regions and souvenirs on display whereas tourismtraining schools serve the guests with Myanmartraditional foods at the show.

The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, theMyanmar Tourism Board, hotel service, tourismservice, souvenir shops, transport service, tour guides,health care service and human resource developmentdisplay tourist destinations and services with the use ofneat and smart vinyl photos, paintings, documentaryvideo and small scales. A total of 24 restaurants fromNay Pyi Taw and Yangon sell clean and fresh foodsto the guests.

The tourists from various countries canthoroughly know about the tourist destinations acrossthe nation on one-stop visit and they will have theopportunity to taste delicious Myanmar traditionalfoods at the show. Thus, the show will contribute muchto promotion of Myanmar tourism industry.

While striving for successfully holding the show,the Myanmar Tourism Board coordinates with itssubordinate associations for ensuring sustainabledevelopment of the tourism industry.

In fact, the tourism industry can contribute toincreasing incomes of not only hotels and tourismentrepreneurs and companies but also souvenir shops,restaurants, vendors, taxi drivers, trishaw drivers andpony-cart drivers of the respective regions. That iswhy all the people are to harmoniously participate inthe tasks for gaining greater progress of the tourismindustry.

Humans must guard againstanimal disease risk: WHO

BEIJING, 1 July— China must adopt a holistic ap-proach to addressing food safety challenges connectedto the risk of contracting infectious diseases fromcontact with animals, the World Health Organization(WHO) has said. Peter Ben Embarek, food safetyofficer at WHO's China office, said the country facesrisks connected to the need to produce more meat, eggsand milk to feed its growing population. He said theincreased production will ramp up the risk of peoplebeing infected by food-borne diseases because of poorslaughtering oversight and the absence of proper sur-veillance and inspection systems.

About 50 percent of pigs in China are slaughteredoutside of formal facilities without the inspection ofveterinarians or food safety officers. He said poorlytrained producers have little or no awareness of foodsafety or the risk of animal diseases being passed on tohumans. Such an environment could lead to the emer-gence of a new pandemic of influenza. During the past60 years, 30 percent of the 335 new infectious diseasesworldwide were transmitted through food, he said.
