Neighborly News September 2020
From the Desk - Alaina Lynch, Recreation Director September marks six months since the COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed
protocols of nursing facilities nationwide. Visitor restrictions, communal dining
and gathering limitations, social distancing, and facial covering requirements
have changed the daily experience for each of us. Recreation has had to scale
back on group programming and do our best to focus on meeting the needs of
each resident individually. Since the restriction of visitors, Recreation has prioritized keeping you
connected with loved ones through any the following methods:
1. Video chat appointments are available at https://volunteersignup.org/RAXWK .
2. A free heartfelt note and picture can be sent at www.HappyGram.org.
3. Longer messages or pictures can be sent to [email protected].
Grants were secured to improve wi-fi in resident halls and to purchase electronic devices for video
calls. In addition to helping you stay in touch, we have ensured residents have all necessary materials
to enjoy individual leisure activity. The Perk Daily and library books are also provided. Small group
programming and Restorative Strengthening are available weekly. Manicures and bingo alternate
weekly. There will also be a few surprises included in each monthly activity calendar.
While the positivity rate in Delaware County continues to be monitored in order to move to the next
phase of reopening, we will continue to help you feel connected to the community and your loved
ones while striving for new and creative ways to engage with each and every resident. You and your
story matter to us.
Just don't give up trying to do what
you really want to do. Where there is
love and inspiration, I don't think you
can go wrong. - Ella Fitzgerald

Resident Profile - Jackie Traut Our highlighted resident for September is Jackie Traut. Jackie was born on November 16, 1924, in southwestern Iowa’s Ringgold County, where she was raised. She spent much of her childhood with her grandparents helping out around the grocery store they owned.
Jackie graduated from the local public high school in Kellerton and went on to complete CNA training at the community college in Fort Dodge. She had to take a 350–question test at the end of her training, which she thought she would never get through. Jackie passed the test
and only missed three questions! She then worked at the Pocahontas Community Hospital as a CNA and Ward Clerk. Jackie was also a teacher and a cook at Maquoketa Valley Schools.
Jackie married her husband, Charlie Weatherwax (dec.) on May 15, 1941. Jackie enjoyed chaperoning as Charlie
coached high school girls’ basketball teams to the state tournament numerous times. They also enjoyed going camping all around Iowa. Their children are Charles Weatherwax of Spirit Lake, JoAnn Francis of Pocahontas, Terry Weatherwax of Dyersville, and Dave Weatherwax of Delhi.
Jackie married Ed Traut on July 5, 1996, becoming step-mother to Judy and Janice (dec.). Jackie also loved knitting and crocheting, making blankets for each of her children and grandchildren for graduation gifts. Jackie adores her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bingo is another favorite pastime of hers. Congratulations, Jackie!

Neighbor Home (in-between the dining rooms) on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. We will have Christmas caroling and holiday treats as we count down to the actual Christmas tree lighting.
Good Neighbor Society families and staff are encouraged to bring a non-breakable ornament to the Good Neighbor Home anytime from November 2 up until 7:00 p.m. on December 2 to help make the Christmas tree look festive.
Please have your ornament labeled with your name and contact information if you wish to have it returned after January 15, 2021. Ornaments that are not labeled will be retained and used again in 2021 for the Third Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.
