This is the story of Nellie, a real horse who worked for Wells Fargo in Bakersfeld, California, in 1898.

We know about Nellie and this adventure because her driver, a man named Rush Blodget, told about his job with Wells Fargo and Nellie in a letter. Rush’s letter also told us a lot about what it was like to work with Wells Fargo and our ponies a long time ago.

Now, get ready to learn about our horse – Nellie.

Nellie pulled a Wells Fargo Express wagon, delivering gold coins and packages to Wells Fargo customers. Her driver’s name was Rush.

Because she had been working for Wells Fargo a long time, many customers knew Nellie by name and looked forward to seeing her when she stopped with their delivery. In his letter, Rush said Nellie seemed to set her own calm pace as she pulled her Wells Fargo wagon around Bakersfeld.

One day, Nellie and Rush were busy making their deliveries and stopped at the train station to collect more packages. The train was bringing soldiers home and Rush heard one of the soldiers cry, “Help! Help!” Rush couldn’t believe his eyes. The soldier was Rush’s brother and he needed a doctor.

Rush put his brother into the wagon. He called to Nellie, “Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!” Nellie usually went about a quiet pace, but now she quickly trotted to Rush’s house where they could get the soldier help.

But Nellie still had a job to do. She and Rush went right back to work, fnishing her route and taking care of Wells Fargo customers. Because she helped the soldier and still remembered her other duties and did her job without complaint, Nellie was a hero twice that day!

Because of Nellie’s quickness, Rush’s brother got the help he needed from a doctor. Rush never forgot how Nellie saved the day.
