MANAGING ENGINEERING SYSTEMS

A central part of technological innovation for industrial firms involves search for new external knowledge.

External knowledge search has demonstrated that firms investing in broader search may have a great ability to innovate.

Evidence about influences of technology search strategies on firms technological innovation performance along three distinctive dimensions: technical, geographic, and temporal dimensions

A closer look at how best-performing Chineselicensee firms search external technologies can beillustrated using the three-dimensional knowledgesearch space in Figure 2 (Li et al., 2008). First,knowledge search scenario 1 suggests that to havegood technological innovation performance basedon licensed technologies, Chinese firms need tokeep technical distance small, meanwhile search

distance along the geographic and temporal dimen-sions may vary. Second, as knowledge search sce-nario 2 suggests, if Chinese firms intend to unleashthe innovation potential by searching unfamiliartechnical knowledge and enhance technologicalinnovation performance, they need to keep geo-graphic distance small and temporal distance rela-tive large.
