Learn to Help Others Kick the HabitThe Helpers Program is just one of the resources available to our employees as we prepare to go tobacco-free in 2012

Jan. 1 is right around the corner and with the New Year the Tobacco-Free Environment policy becomes effec-tive for all of The University of Arizona Health Network properties. UAHN is offering a variety of resources to help staff, visitors and patients adapt to our change to a tobacco-free campus.

One of those resources is the Helpers Program, which teaches staff how to have conversations with others about quitting

smoking in a supportive, non-confrontational way. The free program, developed at the UA College of Medicine, is offered in person or can be completed online. Click here for more information.

In December, the Health Network will offer a two-day “Train the Trainer” course to teach interested UAHN staff members to be “trainers” for the Helpers Program. Those who complete the course will be qualified to teach other UAHN staff the skills that will help them have conversa-tions with patients, visitors or co-workers. There is no commitment on the number of classes a trainer will teach; it is entirely dependent on your schedule.

Employees interested in becoming trainers should contact Nancy Canin at 694-1711. The training will take place at the University Campus on Dec. 5 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in Room 2406 and on Dec. 6 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Kiewit Auditorium.

Trainers will offer Helpers training sessions for general staff on an ongoing basis beginning in December. Staff members who complete the Helpers training will receive $25 in reward points for the Healthy Lifestyle Challenge. Watch for dates and further details.

If you’re an employee who’s trying to quit smoking yourself, check out one of the following programs:

Any smoking cessation products that are prescribed by the physicians in the Quit & Win program are available at our UAHN outpatient phar-macies with no copayments. To enroll in the program, refer someone else to the program or for additional information, call 694-1711 or click here.

•The AshLine smoking cessation quit line provides tel-ephonic or Web-based coaching to help you quit. You can create an account, work through activities, set goals and monitor progress from your own computer. For more information call 1-800-556-6222 or click here.

Free Financial Advising Available to Health Network Employees

In place at The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus since 2008, the Financial Wellness Program reaches out to employees through presentations, workshops and one-on-one counseling with a certified financial planner. The program will expand to the entire network in January.

“The idea is to empower employees and staff members to make good financial decisions, so guidance and educa-tion is really the focus,” said Mark Cline, personal finance and retirement planning counselor for the Health Net-work. Cline is a certified financial planner with Fiducia-ryVest, an independent investment advisory firm.

Cline offers financial advising on a wide range of topics, including retirement planning, investing, credit card

debt, budgeting and more. He maintains an office at the University Campus but keeps flexible hours and travels throughout the Health Network to reach employees in need of assistance at various locations. The comprehensive program is free for all employees.

Since the program’s inception, Cline has had approximately 1,700 one-on-one interactions with hospital employees and reached more than

3,400 through workshops, seminars, presentations and open-office hours.

To contact Cline for financial advising, email [email protected].

Mark Cline is the in-house financial counselor to employees of The University of Ari-zona Health Network.

Need advice on retirement planning or saving for your son or daughter’s college tuition? Perhaps you have some troublesome credit card debt or you’re considering refinancing your home. No matter what your financial worries or ques-tions, you can get

advice on how to handle them from The University of Arizona Health Network’s Financial Wellness Program, offered through Human Resources.

The Financial Wellness Program was recently named a winner of the Workplace Leaders in Financial Education Award, given by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Society for Human Resource Man-agement.

The award, created this year, recognizes corporate, non-profit and government organizations that exhibit excel-lence in workplace financial education through programs that teach employees to make good personal financial decisions. The Health Network is one of nine winning organizations across the nation. “We believe financial education is an important resource for our employees’ well-being, and we are proud to be recognized for setting a national standard in this area,” said John Marques, the Health Network’s vice president and chief human resources officer.

Phoenix campuses), professor of public policy with the UA Zuckerman College of Public Health and founding director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program, led the Arizona effort to host the conference along with a large local interprofessional team.

South Campus Emergency Nurse Madole Honored With Daisy AwardCongratulations to Tracy Madole, RN, the most recent winner of the Daisy Award at The University of Arizona Medical Center.

Madole has worked full time in the emergency department at the South Campus since 2009 and was promoted to clinical leader in May 2011. She is known by her colleagues as a mentor, coach, patient advocate and “nurses’ nurse.”

Madole’s caring and compassion are felt by all she touches, her nominators say. Outside of work, she has volunteered with humanitarian aid efforts in third-world countries, and in 2010 she spent weeks delivering aid to earthquake victims in Haiti.

The DAISY Award was created in 2000 as a tribute to J. Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old man who had a rare

autoimmune disease (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The award recognizes RNs who are outstanding role models in the nursing community.
