Term 4 - Monday 14 Oct - Wednesday 18 Dec

Interschools Chess ChampionshipWe are very proud that Chelsea, Darien, Vanessa and Anton were successful last week in their chess final against Beecroft PS, and will progress to the Sydney Metropolitan Final against the Emanuel School, Randwick. This is an outstanding result for the team and we wish them good luck for the final.

Tell Them From Me SurveyThis term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, which is another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August - 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Primary Proms ConcertCongratulations to the students in the Junior Choir for their wonderful performance in the Primary Proms Concert held at the Sydney Town hall last week. They certainly represented the school in an exemplary way. Thank you to Mrs Emma Howells and Ms Catherine Dauth for their work in preparing the choir.

RoadworkWe have been informed that North Sydney Council will block off Watson Street at Yeo Street on Friday 27 September. Please contact North Sydney Council for further information.

Term 4 Dates and Summer UniformStudents return to school next term, on Monday 14 October 2019. Please note there is no Staff Development Day at the beginning of Term 4. Students return to school in their summer uniform, including school socks and black school shoes.

Student AbsencesA reminder that when your child is absent from school, an explanation needs to be provided, ideally on the day of absence. Where an explanation is not provided within seven calendar days, Department of Education procedures require the absence to be recorded as unjustified. The Home School Liaison Officer visits our school each semester and follows up where a student has a number of unjustified absences.

If you have information relating to your child’s class placement of which you feel we need to be made aware, please advise the school by completing the following form. School Planning 2020.

It should be noted that while we will take this information into consideration when forming classes, not all requests will be met, owing to the many factors that need to be considered when forming classes.

Junior Choir NewsCongratulations to the Junior Choir who performed at the Sydney Town Hall last week in the Primary Proms Choral Festival. The choir sang like angels and their behaviour was exemplary. Ms Dauth and I were so proud of them.

Choir rehearsals will re-commence in Week 1 next term, and continue until the end of the year to prepare for 2020 Primary Proms auditions and end of year concerts.

Emma HowellsJunior Choir conductor

Mrs L. van Rhijn - 2V Class Teacher

Kindergarten News Stage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)

Miss S. Medurst - KM Class Teacher

What do you know about South Australia? Do you know that Adelaide Zoo is the second oldest Australian zoo? Or that Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is the largest salt lake in Australia? Or that the formation of the Flinders Ranges began about 800 million years ago?

Well 2V do! We have spent most of Term 3 researching and discovering information and facts about South Australia as part of our English Unit of Work. First, we found one landmark (human made) and one landform (natural) to research. Then we moved onto Historical Events such as Adelaide’s Flower Day. This was followed by Indigenous Sites such as Ngaut Ngaut Conservation Park that is found near the Murray River. Once we had all our information in one place, we started writing our own Information Reports on South Australia using the facts we found!

KM have been loving learning addition and subtraction strategies with Miss Medhurst and our special guest teacher, Ms Clapham!

We’ve also had a lot of fun exploring our Science challenge, and investigating how different styles of paper planes move!

Miss E. Smith - 4S Class Teacher

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4)

Mrs N. Remenyi - 5R Class Teacher

Stage 2 News (Years 5 & 6)The students of 4S love writing! Throughout Term 3, we have been using the Seven Steps to Writing Success during lessons about narrative writing. 4S have been creating engaging pieces of writing that include aspects of the Seven Steps, such as ‘Sizzling Starts’, ‘Dynamic Dialogue’ and ‘Exciting Endings’! When writing a sizzling start, the students of 4S have been experimenting with strategies such as ‘starting with a bang’ and starting at the ‘moment of change’, as well as incorporating the use of humour, curiosity and dialogue. Take a look at these excellent sizzling starts from our lightning writing sessions this term!

“Shhh,” screeched the tourist leader. “It’s getting too loud and anyway, it’s sleeping time!” After that, the bus was silent. It was as quiet as a mouse and as dark as black, until three girls started screaming wildly. A boy named Christopher smelt a sniff of smoke that passed his nose… (Nita 4S)

It had started as an amazing, fun-filled camping trip for Jacob, but that was before the cliff, the landslide and the surgeon’s mistake. When his teacher had announced that the class was going on a camping trip, Jacob had yelled in joy. Jacob hated school. He was always the kid at the back of the class twiddling his thumbs. The next week, his mum waved goodbye and he clambered onto the bus. When he found out where they were going, he was even more excited! They were going on a five day field trip to Fool’s Cliff! What could go wrong? Everything. (Eamon 4S)

Woosh! Flames appeared from a mile away. Ashes floated and filled the air. I was stuck inside, trying to find a way out and filled with the fear of not making it. Firemen were at work, soaking trees and houses. The ground was so dry, really dry. It spread from trees to houses and unfortunately ours was one of them. (Millie 4S)

In Term 2 and 3, 5R have been studying Australian History. We looked at significant Australians from the 1800s who shaped our history. We looked at politics, writers and even bushrangers. One person that we looked at in detail was Ned Kelly. Whilst looking at Ned Kelly, we found an artwork by Sidney Nolan. We then decided to try to create this artwork ourselves. The artwork features Ned Kelly in his armour, on his horse holding his rifle. He was facing the trees in the distance and you can see blue sky through his visor.

Ned Kelly was a bushranger who lived in the 1800s. He was the leader of the Kelly Gang which included his brother Dan Kelly and others. They wore protective metal armour, with bolts on his shoulders. One day, Kelly was eventually caught by the police and hanged.

Ned Kelly was a famous bushranger and we were inspired to make our own versions of the famous Ned Kelly painting by Sidney Nolan.
