Principalrsquos NewsStudent WellbeingAn exciting student wellbeing program we are continuing at our school this year is Positive Behaviour for Learning known as PBL This framework will provide a whole school approach that

bull Addresses the academic and social needs of every student to support them to be successful

bull Enables our school to establish a continuum of support that is intensified to meet the needs of every student

bull Establishes positive social expectations for all in the school community and

bull Provides a framework for our school and our community to collectively support the wellbeing of every student

As part of the framework we have developed lsquoThe Bay Wayrsquo which provides three expectations we aspire to with the students The expectations are

Swimming CarnivalWe enjoyed a great day of activities at our swimming carnival Well done to the students for their efforts and house support Thank you to Mrs Kessler and Mr Brown for their work in organising the event Thank you to all the parents and staff who assisted Results from the Carnival are published on page 5 of this weekrsquos Bay Times

Science and Music Programs

In 2017 we will be continuing with our Music and Science Programs which are generously funded through our schoolrsquos PampC Association for the benefit of the students The Music Program is taught by Ms Pagel and Mrs Howells who provide weekly music lessons for all classes K-6 The program involves singing music reading recorder guitar percussion and drama Ms Pagel and Mrs Howells in conjunction with Mrs Tarjan Mrs Cant and Mrs Divine also teach Junior Senior and Bay Choir who will be performing on a number of occasions this year including the Primary Proms Concert at Sydney Town hall and Festival of Choral Music Concert at the Opera House

The Science Program is taught by Mr Mayne to students in Years 3-6 In his specialist Science Room the students undertake a range of scientific and technological activities

We are very appreciative of the PampCrsquos support of these programs

PampC Welcome DrinksWe look forward to the PampCrsquos Parent and Staff Welcome evening which will be held on Friday of this week Further information is on page 9 of this weekrsquos Bay Times

LibraryA new demountable library will be provided to our school in the near future This will become our senior library Our existing library will be our junior library As part of Futures Focussed Learning our junior library has been set up with purpose designed furniture

Selective High Information NightOn Tuesday 28 February we will be holding a Selective High School Information Session in the music room commencing at 700pm for parents who have a child in Year 5 this year and are considering applying for a selective high school in 2019

As part of this session we will provide information on what is the purpose of selective high schools how selection is made and how our school provides ranking information

Hugo will be representing Australia individually and in a team at the Asia Youth Fencing Grand Prix in Shanghai China in April

Congratulations to both Mei Yamada (6A) and Isabella Chao (5B) for getting into the final rounds of Peter Pans audition (9 hours) of Bonnie Lythgoe Productions in Sydney on 11th March Best of luck to a positive outcome girls

2017 Swimming CarnivalSwimming Carnival Wednesday 15th FebruaryAfter days and weeks of extreme weather in terms of excessive heat we were relieved to have a day for our carnival which was cool and sufficiently dry and warm to stage our first big sporting event of the new school year

The day was a great success The carnival ran smoothly with all the children involving themselves fully in the atmosphere and the competitive spirit generated by the team houses and the House captains who spurred their teams on

Participation was high and the novelty races enabled everyone to be involved

In the competitive races we saw maximum participation and our elite swimmers came to the fore We saw numerous outstanding and impressive performances with students competing in every possible race they could which was great to see

Throughout the day the teachers work tirelessly to ensure the event ran smoothly The carnival committee had worked hard to ensure every base was covered The parents who helped also deserve a big lsquothank yoursquo since without them the races and the timings would have been non- existent

Congratulations to the winning house which was Warung who won with a canter in the end but also we need to mention the other 3 houses who finished close to each other in the final outcome

Finally we wish all those who made it through to Zone all the very best in representing the school at Lane Cove Pool on Friday March 10th

It has been a busy couple of weeks for the Kindergarten students We have been settling well into the routines of school and learning lots of new things The students are continuing to learn their sounds We have also started learning lots of numbers exploring patterns as well as sorting objects This week KB looked at positional language We went into the playground and took some photos using the positional language The students have also looked at important places around Kindyland The students in KB started discussing rubbish in preparation for Clean UP Australia Day

Year 1 have been working hard this week and learning many new things We have been reading lsquoThe Gruffalorsquo and learning how to write a description using lots of interesting adjectives This week 1K had fun creating beautiful artworks inspired by The Gruffalo story

We were very happy to meet our Year 6 buddies this week Our buddies enjoyed working with 1K to write their learning goals for the semester and discussing how to follow The Bay Way We look forward to spending the year with our buddies and learning even more from them

As part of the NBPS Bay Way program 2017 Year 3 students are setting personal goals that they would like to achieve in Semester 1 In 3D the initial class discussion involved revisiting the school wide Bay Way expectations lsquoBe responsible Show Respect and Do Your Bestrsquo Each expectation was considered in turn as a class For the parentsrsquo evening 3D then made a video featuring all students acting out aspects of the Bay Way expectations Here are some images taken from the video featuring 3D Students thoroughly enjoyed making our movie as can be seen from the images

Stage 3 News (Years 5 amp 6)This term Year 6 is working on a Mystery Unit Inspired by the works of authors such as Gary Crew we have been writing our very own mystery narratives Here are excerpts from the works of students from 6A and 6K

The Watchers

There it stood on the edge of civilisation rotting away in the musty almost poisoned countryside Its twisted vines squeezing the life out of what plants were left around the house The floorboards creaking under the impact as beams slowly fell from the ceiling taking a chunk out of Rowleyrsquos room Rowley was outside when it happened Without his father there to protect him he was at the mercy of The Watchers the mysterious folk who had survived the fall of Ulgador They werenrsquot actually called lsquoThe Watchersrsquo but their true name was so evil and malevolent that no one dared to utter ithellip

Leon Fink ndash 6AThe Haunted House

As the sun was pulled down and replaced by the gloomy moon the terrified friends ran as fast as their barefooted feet could go Terrible things lurked behind them Peaches took the lead and Blossom clumsily trotted behind her The sound of crunched leaves and sticks scattered under their sore and blistered feet Running hard through the thick and dense bushland Blossom and Peaches stumbled across a house The house had splintered wood and scattered glass filling the deck The smell of burnt candles with a hint of regret and mistakes lurked in the eerie air The girls looked at each other They had no other choice

It has been a busy couple of weeks for the Kindergarten students We have been settling well into the routines of school and learning lots of new things The students are continuing to learn their sounds We have also started learning lots of numbers exploring patterns as well as sorting objects This week KB looked at positional language We went into the playground and took some photos using the positional language The students have also looked at important places around Kindyland The students in KB started discussing rubbish in preparation for Clean UP Australia Day

Year 1 have been working hard this week and learning many new things We have been reading lsquoThe Gruffalorsquo and learning how to write a description using lots of interesting adjectives This week 1K had fun creating beautiful artworks inspired by The Gruffalo story

We were very happy to meet our Year 6 buddies this week Our buddies enjoyed working with 1K to write their learning goals for the semester and discussing how to follow The Bay Way We look forward to spending the year with our buddies and learning even more from them

As part of the NBPS Bay Way program 2017 Year 3 students are setting personal goals that they would like to achieve in Semester 1 In 3D the initial class discussion involved revisiting the school wide Bay Way expectations lsquoBe responsible Show Respect and Do Your Bestrsquo Each expectation was considered in turn as a class For the parentsrsquo evening 3D then made a video featuring all students acting out aspects of the Bay Way expectations Here are some images taken from the video featuring 3D Students thoroughly enjoyed making our movie as can be seen from the images

Stage 3 News (Years 5 amp 6)This term Year 6 is working on a Mystery Unit Inspired by the works of authors such as Gary Crew we have been writing our very own mystery narratives Here are excerpts from the works of students from 6A and 6K

The Watchers

There it stood on the edge of civilisation rotting away in the musty almost poisoned countryside Its twisted vines squeezing the life out of what plants were left around the house The floorboards creaking under the impact as beams slowly fell from the ceiling taking a chunk out of Rowleyrsquos room Rowley was outside when it happened Without his father there to protect him he was at the mercy of The Watchers the mysterious folk who had survived the fall of Ulgador They werenrsquot actually called lsquoThe Watchersrsquo but their true name was so evil and malevolent that no one dared to utter ithellip

As the sun was pulled down and replaced by the gloomy moon the terrified friends ran as fast as their barefooted feet could go Terrible things lurked behind them Peaches took the lead and Blossom clumsily trotted behind her The sound of crunched leaves and sticks scattered under their sore and blistered feet Running hard through the thick and dense bushland Blossom and Peaches stumbled across a house The house had splintered wood and scattered glass filling the deck The smell of burnt candles with a hint of regret and mistakes lurked in the eerie air The girls looked at each other They had no other choice

Saturday 11th March from 900am to 1130am
