Debating Report 3/8/16Neutral Bay Blue vs Cammeray Green

You could call it the toughest debate we have ever faced. We sweated as the clock ticked and soon our preparation hour was up. We went into 4H with confidence, but little did we know there was a huge gaping hole in our model that would tear our debate apart. Neutral Bay Blue was negative and our big mistake was changing the model for the topic that children should do 2 hours of charity work a week. Cammeray Green vs Neutral bay Blue would go down for the closest debate in our debating history! Congratulations to Cammeray who came out on top.

By Bezi Saunders, Eden King, Sonia Freiburg, Olivia Forman and Eden Borrie

Neutral Bay White vs Cammeray Yellow

The Neutral Bay White team had an excellent debate against Cammeray. The topic was that “Parents should pay their children if their school work improves”. We were affirmative and came back victorious. We all had so much fun and enjoyed ourselves incredibly.

Sports NewsMilo Cricket “Big Blast”On Monday 1 August, the school sent 6 teams to compete in the Milo Cricket Gala Day at Artarmon Reserve. The teams competed against numerous other teams, including Willoughby, St Thomas’, Shore and Artarmon. In the tournament format, the teams played three games in separate pools of four teams. The final, fourth game was calculated by the finishing places overall, so 1st played 2nd, 3rd played 4th, etc.

Our teams had a great day. The students enjoyed taking part since everyone got to bowl and bat in each game. As a bonus, they got to sing-a-long and dance to the music that was blasting over the speakers all day!

The teams had mixed success throughout the day, but in the end it was all about having fun and being out and involved in active sport. Our best placed team was our girls’ team who finished a respectable 3rd in their competition. Our best placed boys team ended up 4th. Not forgetting a special mention to Kinjal Kumari, who managed to individually win, the girl’s lunchtime catching competition.

Cricket and sport were definitely the winners on the day! So, well done to all the 50 students who took part, representing our school so impressively.

Rob Kessler and Steph Chapple

Athletics Carnival 2016 This year’s annual carnival was blessed with clear blue skies and 600 incredibly keen and energetic competitors from our school.

An amazing day of competitive athletics transpired; from start to finish it was pure gold. On the track, we witnessed the 200 metres, 100 metres, 800 metres races and the exciting climax of the four relay races to finish the day. Additionally, all the field events competitions took place throughout the carnival.

The energy and enthusiasm of the students was of course the lasting memory of the day. The students were incredible throughout the day, from our Year 2 students, at their first carnival, through to the Year 6 students participating in the last Neutral Bay Athletics Carnival. However, it is important to recognise that the organisation of such a big event does not happen by magic. We need to acknowledge the contribution and hard work of all the teachers before, during and after the carnival. They even managed to keep the children active when they weren’t racing via the novelty races on the central field at the stadium.

So, a big “well done!” to students and teachers alike, who all contributed to make this day such a wonderful success. Our nine buses even managed to return all the children back to school just in time for the end-of-the-day bell at home time.

Congratulations to the students who were successful in their races and now go on to zone on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 August at the Sydney Academy of Sport. Maybe future Olympic glory awaits! Who knows!

PLEASE NOTE: The ZONE TEAM is selected from the first 2 places in the field events, 200 metres and 800 metres and first 3 places in the 100 metres. Please see the results on page 5 of this newsletter. The children selected for the Zone team will receive letters shortly from Mr Kessler.

Stage NewsStage 1 News (Years 1 & 2)In Year 2 we have been learning a lot about the amazing ocean. We have been reading the books ‘The Hidden Forest’ by Jeannie Baker and ‘The Deep’ by Tim Winton. Through literature, we have been discovering the beauty and magic that lies beneath the surface of the ocean. The books touch on themes of sustainability, overcoming fears and friendship.

So far this term we have explored various forms of sea life, including kelp forests and blue whales. Kelp forests provide a protective habitat for many marine species. However, about 90% of kelp forests off the West Coast of Australia have been wiped out over the past 5 years.

In 2R we made our own hidden forests. We made our ocean backgrounds using edicol dye and salt, and our fish using tinfoil and metallic paints. We hope you enjoy them!

KD really enjoyed having our families visit on Friday morning for Open Day. We showed them our writing books and artwork around the classroom. We also showed them how we use the iPads and technology in our classroom. We felt really proud when we sang our song, Three Little Fishes, on the stage in front of the whole school. We loved watching other students perform. We especially enjoyed the Senior Dance performance.

Year 3 are very excited to be exploring the great states that make up Australia as part of our English Unit of Work for this term. Through our Unit we are learning how to produce various Informative texts. 3J recently completed a ‘Fast Facts’ sheet on our class state of Queensland, with particular focus on the state capital, Brisbane. We worked in pairs to research all that we could on Brisbane such as its population; things to see and do; landmarks and any interesting facts. By the end of the term, we hope to produce our very own student magazine with all you need to know about AMAZING Queensland!

Stage 3 News (Years 5 & 6)

In our recent Visual Arts lessons, 6C have been studying colour theory, movement, rhythm and shape in our artworks. One of these lessons focused on creating a relief sculpture using line, as well as positive and negative shape.

First we discussed various types of lines and how they portray feeling in artwork. Then we analysed

how colour schemes can affect the overall emotion portrayed in an artwork, including monochromatic, complementary and triadic designs.

We then used wool to build various kinds of lines on our cardboard pieces, building layers up to 3-4 pieces wide in some areas. Aluminium foil was laid over the top and specific colour schemes were added, with some areas remaining solid and other areas overlapping ink into gradations or value changes. Sandpaper was also used to lightly distress the colour and shine of the foil in some areas.

We’re very proud of how our artworks turned out. Situated next to our class window, they definitely add a sparkle to our room.

Receiving a compliment, especially one about who we are on the inside, about our character, builds us up and brightens our day.

In our recent Kindness Challenge, the students of 6C were on a mission to write positive, meaningful compliments about every student in our class. To do this, we reflected on the words and actions of our classmates. Then we thought of qualities that were at the heart of these actions and words to frame compliments that were positive, truthful, specific and reflected the talents and strengths of each person.

We wrote each of our compliments on butterfly shapes and double mounted them to create a three-dimensional effect. These are displayed on the noticeboards on the back of our classroom where they remind us every day of how we can bring out the best in others. Our favourite part? The butterfly wings actually ripple when a breeze blows across our classroom.

Individual Registration Fees: Each player in the team must be registered with Basketball NSW, which can be done through the NSBA website or over the counter. Basketball NSW registration lasts for 12 months and includes insurance. If you are already registered there is no need to re-register until your registration expires. If you are a new player or your registration has run out, here is the link: http://www.foxsportspulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-9327-0-0-0&sID=286794

Training: Training is normally at Lane Cove Public School but I have asked them to do the training closer to the school since we are all from the area. Training session in Term 3 will be 45 mins as there will be no daylight savings. Training sessions in Term 4 will be 1 hour. This has been reflected in the training fees.

I’d like to put a team on 8 boys. There are 7 places we would like to fill. Can you please let us know as soon as possible by reply email if your child/children would like to join the team? Please include their date of birth so we can ensure they are in the correct age group.

Let me know if you have any questions. Jacqueline Veran (mother of Lachlan 3C) email: [email protected]>
