NORWICH, Conn. (AP) Richard Perry is overseeingwhat may be the most enduring property renovation proj-ect in Norwich’s recent history. Architect Arnold Graton is constructing a 60-ft.-long by

behind some legacy to future generations because at thepresent time, there are only four authentic, traditionallybuilt covered bridges in Connecticut,’’ Perry said. “Theseare bridges that are often not rebuilt, so I thought this wouldbe a great opportunity to build a covered bridge in the samemanner it would have been built 150 years ago, and this isthe only man in the country that does it.’’ According to Graton’s Web site, Arnold M. Milton CAT hosted complimentary seminars on caringfor and maintaining Cat compact equipment. The seminarswere geared to owners of one or two machines. According toMilton CAT VP of Sales, Dave Perry, in today’s very com-petitive environment, contractors don’t want to waste a sin-gle opportunity for getting new business or holding ontoexisting projects, and making sure their equipment is wellcared for to avoid downtime is a top concern.
This series of four workshops was conducted at the MiltonCAT’s Milford, Mass., location in March. According toPerry, the four lunch-and-learn events attracted hundreds ofguests from all over the state.
As guests arrived at the recently opened 179 QuarryDrive Training Center, they were guided to a reception areawhere there were informational stations manned by subjectmatter experts focusing on fluids and filters, quickits, worktools, new and used equipment and fluid analysis.Following a hot lunch buffet, Milford-based CompactEquipment Shop Service Supervisor Steve Phillips andCompact Lead Service Technician Keith Correia deliveredmachine walk-arounds, discussing maintenance intervals,

bridge rehabilitation and construction. Once the bridge is finished, Perry
plans to open it to public use, possiblycreating a companion exhibit to showhow it was constructed. He said ittook a year to get through the city’spermitting and review process. “I really want people to see what the
bridge is like, how it was constructed,’’Perry said. “I wanted this as sort of alegacy. I don’t have children, so it’s aquestion of, ‘who am I going to leavemy money to,’ and I thought this wouldbe a great opportunity.’’ There are four authentic covered
bridges in the state, with the last onebuilt in 1874. Norwich’s experiencewith the structures dates back to 1764,when the first wooden truss bridge inthe nation was erected 28 ft. over theShetucket River by John Bliss. Without concrete, power tools, metal
nails or any of the other modernresources at the disposal of contractors, putting together a Town Lattice TrussBridge by hand is as grueling as it isimpressive. The design is named after a tech-
nique patented by Ithiel Town, a
Thompson native born in 1784 whowas among the first generation ofAmerican architects. Graton and hiscompatriots are building their bridgewith the same material that would havebeen available in Town’s day. Graton and a small team have lived
in trailers on Perry’s property sinceLabor Day, when work on the bridgebegan in a barn constructed especiallyfor the project. “Arnold’s a craftsman. There’s no
one in the country that’s done what he’sdone,’’ said Graton’s wife and businesspartner Meg Dansereau. Graton said Perry’s bridge is the 17th
he’s built from scratch, but his Ashland,N.H.-based firm has restored 65 ofthem across the country. Crews were working to raise the pair
of 8-ton (7.2 t) trusses recently, andexpect to have the bridge ready forinstallation over two dry stone abut-ments that span a pond in Perry’s yardby mid-June. Oxen will be brought in to secure
the bridge using a capstan, a vertical-axle rotating machine that appliesforce to ropes and is used to raisesails.
Traditionally, communities held par-ties when covered bridges wereopened, and Perry said he’s planning asimilar event. Another signature of Perry’s bridge
is a 13-in. (33 cm) camber angle grad-ually worked in the trusses thatstrengthens it and provides an aestheticdetail not commonly found on coveredbridges. Graton said he enjoys the public
nature of his work because it sparksconversation. “It takes an interest in it [from oth-
ers] if you’re ever going to do anotherone,’’ Graton said. On April 23, Graton’s workers
weren’t the only ones on site. BettyPauwels, of Franklin, N.H., was takingphotographs for the National Societyfor the Preservation of CoveredBridges. “This is a newer bridge being built
using the old techniques,’’ she said.“It’s such an honor to be here today. It’sawesome.’’

Washington Valley, longconsidered a prime recre-ation area.
The pair started doinglandscaping and construc-tion jobs on the weekendswith rented equipment, andbefore long they were get-ting more jobs than theycould handle working part-time.
“Every time we did a proj-ect, a neighbor would ask usto do something,” Shawsaid. “We were hoping thebusiness would take off, butwe had no idea how fast wewould grow. Plus, peoplekept asking us to do more complicated andelaborate jobs. It was quickly getting out ofhand.”
Big BreakthroughTo handle the rapid growth and variety of
work that was coming their way, the ownersof Rotten Rock purchased a Bobcat 331excavator, a machine they now call thebuilding block of their company.
“With the phone ringing off the hook, theBobcat excavator gave us the ability to dojobs easier and faster so we could move ontothe next one,” Shaw said. “We were able touse it for so many phases of our business. Itbecame invaluable.”
After the first excavator got the companyefficiently moving forward, it was followedby a Zero Tail Swing (ZTS) E35 and then thecurrent machine, another ZTS excavator, anE45, all purchased from Bobcat of NewHampshire in Chichester.
“During all the years I spent in construc-tion, I probably accumulated 30,000 hoursoperating various brands of excavators,” saidShaw, “and I can honestly say the E45 is the
most impressive machine I’ve used. The M-Series unit, which I run almost every day, isunsurpassed for comfort, speed and fuel effi-ciency. The excavator’s fast cycle times maynot seem all that important when you’reworking, but at the end of the day an extra 50cycles can be the difference between a jobbeing completed or returning another time.”
After buying the first Bobcat excavator,Rotten Rock became more of a diversifiedproduction company, handling a variety ofjobs that include excavation, hardscaping, landscaping and tree projects.
“Working fast and efficiently is importantfor generating income, but the main reasonwe moved into a high-production mode wasto keep up with the work,” Shaw said.“There is always a race to get to the next jobto satisfy our customers. Without our Bobcatequipment, we could not keep up.”
