A fire destroyed two mobile homes at Top of the World at the end of April. Now volunteers are being sought to help clean up the mess. Cat Brown | Sun
Eastern Pinal County – On April 21, 2017, a tiny spark started a blaze that quickly consumed two trailer homes at the Top-of-the-World in eastern Pinal County. The fire consumed two homes and one of the two families needs assistance with the cleanup. The United Way of Pinal County (UWPC) and Pinal County Emergency Management are sponsoring the cleanup event and need approximately 15 community volunteers on Saturday, June 17 and possibly June 24 to help remove debris from the site of the fire at Oaks Mobile Home & RV Park located at 527744 US-60, Miami, AZ 85539. For more information on volunteering for the cleanup contact Myra Garcia at 520-836-0736 x15, [email protected] or sign-up to volunteer on the UWPC website at www.unitedwayofpc.org.
Can’t volunteer? Help the effort out by texting COADPC to 91999. The family is also in need of household items and furniture. The Summer heat is upon us and we are fortunate that the mornings and evenings do give us some relief from the heat. There
are lots of great projects being worked on here in town. By now many of you have noticed the new street signs that have been installed. I have heard many positive remarks about the signs. One resident even explained that she had never seen a street sign for her street in the many years she has lived in Superior. Funding for that project came from a grant through the Central Arizona Governments and Arizona Department of Transportation. Our first major road project on our town roads will be complete. The hump at Sunset and Gomez is now smooth. The main corridor of Sunset and

TUCSON, ARIZ. – The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) has seized a deer, bobcat and javelina since June 2 that were illegally taken captive while young by Tucson area residents and reared as pets. The mule deer buck was taken to the AZGFD Wildlife Center in Phoenix for treatment, and then will go to Bearizona in Williams. The bobcat was placed at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, and the javelina moved to the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center in Scottsdale. Taking captive and holding young wildlife is illegal take of wildlife, and illegal possession of restricted wildlife, in addition to being a public safety hazard. Circumstances warranted issuing only warnings in these cases. “In the majority of cases, it is best to leave all baby wildlife alone. People’s desire to help seemingly abandoned animals can have unintended negative consequences,” said Regional Supervisor Raul Vega of Game and Fish in Tucson. “Although it seems humane to ’help’ or ’rescue’ baby animals perceived to be in need, wildlife reared in captivity by humans -- without the benefit of learning from their parents -- have a greatly reduced chance of survival if they are released back into the wild.”
In most instances, baby mammals should be left in place, untouched, unless obviously injured. Although they may appear orphaned, baby mammals are typically left alone by their mother for long periods of time while she forages for food and water. Baby mammals that are immobile and at immediate risk of injury can be moved, if necessary, to a safe location nearby that provides appropriate cover. The mother will likely find the relocated baby by smell or hearing and continue to provide care, provided that people and pets stay away. If a well-meaning person separates a baby mammal from its mother, it may result in euthanizing the animal unless a zoo or shelter can take it. Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer further complicates the issue, as a possessed fawn is suspect because Game and Fish cannot verify that the animal is not from a state where the disease occurs. CWD, similar to Mad Cow Disease, is a fatal neurological condition. There have been no cases in Arizona, but there have been in nearby states. For more information, the public can visit http://bit.ly/2reO9QV for more tips and a list of licensed wildlife rehabilitators in Arizona.

Panther Drives have received a slurry seal. This project cost over $100,000, fortunately paying for this project also helps us to reduce our Highway User Revenue Fund debt that we owe back to you, the taxpayers. Due to a new state law the town will be required to pay back our road fund at the rate of $250,000 a year. To do this the Council has adopted a plan and schedule to prioritize road improvements throughout town. The Council approved a contract for services with Odonetto Construction to help re-fence our airport and grade the runway. We have received many warnings from the FAA about the cows that enjoy resting on our airport runway. The new fence will keep them out of the runway and the grading will allow for airplanes to land safely. The funds for this project were paid from the funds that the town received when we sold part of the airport land to ADOT for the expansion of the highway. In a few weeks, the old “Welcome to Superior” sign will be re-installed as the US 60 expansion is completed. The Library will once again be hosting Summer Reading and the Pool is open for everyone to enjoy. You can most definitely find some relief from the heat at our local library and at the pool. Together, We are Superior.

The Superior Chamber’s Business Attraction & Retention Committee welcomes Jim Schenck to the team as an AmeriCorps “VISTA”—Volunteer in Service to America. Jim will be working on community improvement activities as part of the 2017 Implementation Plan—a strategic partnership agreement funded by Resolution Copper. Jim’s office is at the Superior Chamber, 165 W Main Street and he can be reached at [email protected]. A resident of Superior, former Peace Corps Volunteer in Paraguay and International Voluntary Services Volunteer in Ecuador, Jim most recently worked for Resolution Copper. He has lived and worked in nearly every country in Central and South America. His extensive community and grass-roots development experience will serve well on the “rebuilding Superior” team. He is
a tireless volunteer-about-Town and will therefore hit the ground running with his VISTA Supervisor, the BAR’s Project Manager, Karen LaFrance. The AmeriCorps VISTA program is the domestic Peace Corps, set up in the mid-20th century to assist local communities to grow and prosper. It is the flagship program of the Corporation for National and Community Service which places thousands of volunteers in many projects around the USA. AmeriCorps VISTA members work full time for a year and receive a Federal Government stipend. See more at http://bit.ly/2s3GxCe. The Chamber’s VISTA lead organization—Alliance for AZ Nonprofits— takes care of many administrative items. Jim is the only VISTA in Superior; however, VISTA members can be found at United Way of Pinal County and other locations in the Copper Corridor. Welcome aboard, Jim!
