St Joseph’s Uniform Requirements Last term several reminders were placed in the Newsletter requesting your support of the school’s requirement that shoes worn by all students are consistent with the School Uniform Policy. We thank those parents who have addressed this situation for your child by ensuring a JOGGER STYLE shoe is worn on sports days and a HARD LEATHER UPPER school shoe is worn on all other school days. Vans, Converse and other canvass shoes are NOT permitted. Unfortunately there are still a number of students who are not wearing the correct footwear. Next week, letters will be sent home to parents of these students requesting their continued support by partnering with us to ensure that all students’ shoes satisfy the required safety and presentation standards. Mrs Jenny Bell, Assistant Principal

Curriculum Update!!!$ Attention Year 10 and Year 11 Students The following is a timely reminder regarding your RoSA: The Record of School Achievement (RoSA) is a credential that shows your school achievement from Year 10 up to the HSC. The RoSA is cumulative credential – that is, it grows as your achievements are added. All students are encouraged to be very careful with the submission of assessment tasks in accordance with the school’s assessment policy. In particular students who are absent for school based, TAFE or other reasons MUST ensure they are checking with their teachers regularly so that task notifications and submission/exam dates are NOT missed. Your RoSA grades are determined by your teachers using established guidelines and processes to ensure consistency. The allocation of these grades is based on BOTH formal and informal assessments. This means that every day at school counts. You need to be demonstrating your knowledge, interest and commitment to your courses consistently each day to ensure strong RoSA results. RoSA and Vocational Education and Training On course completion, you will receive your VET credentials from the relevant Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and the course will be listed on your RoSA. If you intend to leave school before the HSC, you also have the option of taking literacy and numeracy tests and you can use your results as evidence of these skills if you leave school. The next round of these tests will be conducted from 24th – 30th October. Please see the Curriculum Coordinator to register for these online tests. If you sit these tests and decide to stay at school, you can sit them again at a later date.

Study Skills Tip For June: How much time should you spend on Schoolwork? In secondary school if you do not have any specific homework or assessments to work on, you are then expected to spend some time that night on independent

learning. This is where you ask yourself, what else COULD I be doing that will help me understand my subjects better and improve my results? Examples of independent learning are: reading ahead in your textbook, making a mind map about what you have been learning, doing extra research on a topic that interests you, making study notes, reviewing work you find difficult!and the list is limitless! However, schools do not expect students to spend ALL of their time on schoolwork! We want you to play sport, see your friends, spend time with family, do activities you enjoy and have some rest and relaxation time as well. If you work effectively, then you can do your work for school, but still have a life!! So given this how much time are you expected to spend on schoolwork? Years 7-8: At least " to 1 " hrs each day. Years 9-10: 1 " - 2hrs each day

Page 3: New !!St Joseph’s Catholic High School · 2016. 8. 29. · “Act Justly, Love Tenderly and Walk humbly with your God” St Joseph’s Uniform Requirements Last term several reminders

Year 11-12: 1 " -2hrs each day which will increase as students have exams and reach the end of their schooling. Remember this is a guide – at times you will be expected to do more (or less)!! What about the Weekend? The amount of time students need to spend on school work will depend on their current workload. Most students will need to spend at least the same amount on the weekend on school work as they do during a weeknight. At the same time, it is important not to overdo it! You do need relaxation and time to yourself. It is important to spend time with family and friends and doing things you really enjoy. You also need to ensure you are getting enough sleep. What is a fair and realistic amount of time each week to spend on your personal activities? There is no easy answer. It depends on how well you use your spare time. A student might have absolutely no other activities and oodles of spare time but still do less than half an hour a night of schoolwork. Another student might have huge amounts of extra-curricular activities but manage their time well and easily do 1 " hours of homework and work for school per day. In fact, if you have lots of time spare you are often less productive in that time. But if you are busy in your life it forces you to be more productive in the time that is available. What about going out? How does that fit in with time management? There is nothing wrong with going out Saturday nights with friends if it is OK with your parents, provided that you do some work on Saturday morning or Sunday (or both) and provided you don’t have too late a night – otherwise you will not be able to work very effectively the next day. The key is to find a balance! And avoid the Sunday night blues – where you leave everything to the last minute on the weekend and run out of time. Learn more useful tips to help you achieve your personal best at school at the Study Skills Handbook available to all St Joseph’s students via Moodle, then Study Skills, then ELES Study Skills then Study Skills Handbook. All students are encouraged to use this online resource which the school has made available to assist all students to enhance your study skills so that you can achieve your personal best in your studies.
